You know, R&B has really flatlined over the last several years. In fact, the artists that are trying to bring it back tend to live on the other side of the pond (Estelle, Corrine Bailey Rae, Laura Izibour, Joss Stoneetc). As the artists I grew up listening to either died or faded out of the mainstream, it's been replaced with a lot of bells and whistles, but little substance. If you've forgotten what a good old-fashioned R&B album sounds like, this will remind you. I'm very impressed with Wayne Brady and with this album.
Musiq is one of those artists who knows exactly who he is and how to express himself. This album did take a little longer to grow on me. His previous projects were all instant hits with me. But now I really like it.
What's great about it: Some very nice tracks
What's not so great: It took a little longer than his others to grow on me
Disappointing comeback, IMO. To be fair, it is very difficult to top My Way, 8701, and Confessions. And vocally, he's probably better than he's even been. But clearly, he's in a different place in his life and that is very much reflected in this album. But because he's in a different place, he seems a little wayward with his focus in exactly what he's trying to communicate. Overall, some wonderful tracks, but I have to do too much skipping to get to them.
Jazmine is incredible. Her expression is confident. She knows exactly who she is as a singer. Fearless is just that - fearless. I pop it in, press play, and then just sit back and take the journey with her. I've missed Lauryn Hill all these years since she checked out of the limelight. Maybe Jazmine can fill that void. She's well on her way.
I don't think Def Jam did her any favors with the singles they released. They should've gone with tracks 1 & 2 to maximize radio and club play. Overall though, good record.
