Tap on NFC-compatible Bluetooth devices to connect and go with these Sony wireless headphones. Their noise-cancelling technology keeps you focused on your music, while their Ambient Sound Mode mixes in voices and other external sounds you need to hear. Sweat and splashes are not a problem for these water-resistant IPX4-rated Sony wireless headphones.

Great extra bass sound signature + noise canceling
on June 10, 2018

Even though "true wireless" headphones are in the spotlight, companies are still releasing traditional wireless headphones that are connected by a wire. While not as glamarous, they typically have longer battery life and provide a more stable connection, probably due to larger antennas.
The Sony WI-SP600N Wireless In-ear Sports Headphones are of that design, with the biggest feature being active digital noise cancelation in a sweat-resistant set designed to stand up to active workouts. From a design-perspective, it actually has an asymmetrical design with a largish module that dangles closer to the left side which houses a number of physical buttons plus the covered microUSB charging port. As you'd expect, multiple sizes of earbuds are included so you can hopefully get a good fit, which is essential for maximizing the sound quality.
Going back to the module, all the expected buttons for play/pause and volume and power are joined by a button that toggles between active noise cancellation, ambient sound mode, and no noise cancellation. I found that the noise canceling worked well, much more like the Sony WI-1000X than the Sony WH-CH700N; I'm not sure if that if it just more effective on in-ear headphones or not. In Ambient Sound Mode, it actually uses the microphone to bring in some of the outside sounds, if that's what you're looking for.
Sony has a companion mobile app "Sony Headphones Connect" that works with most of their Bluetooth headphones, these included. With the app, you can access some additional settings such as equalization settings.
On both iPhone and Android, AAC is the codec I see used, which sounds pretty good. I was a little disappointed that aptX, aptX HD, and Sony's own LDAC are not supported, but AAC still sounded pretty good with tolerable latency. Battery life is reported natively in both iOS and Android, as well as audibly by tapping the power button.
On phone calls, call audio goes through both earbuds which is nice, as some sets only send phone audio to one.
Overall, I really enjoyed the bass response and overall sound of this headset, and the noise canceling works as expected. The IPX4 water resistance means I can enjoy great sound while working out at the gym without worrying damage caused by sweat.

More drone-like than your typical robot vacuum
on June 10, 2018

Robot vacuums have been around for a few years now, but I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the Samsung POWERbot R7065 as just another one of those. I've used some other robot vacuums before, and they are basically black boxes in the sense that you basically start them (or schedule them) and they just go to work with not much control. The first thing I noticed unpacking the R7065 is a physical remote control. Yes, there is still a mobile app option but in my opinion the physical remote really makes the POWERbot feel more like a vacuum drone than just another robot vacuum. With the remote, I can activate auto cleaning, select from three suction settings (Normal, Turbo, Quiet), control the vacuum manually, and have it return back to the charging dock.
The vacuum itself has a display on it that shows information on battery level as well as when it senses an edge. Measuring just over 3.75" inches in height, it can fit under most common furniture and cupboards.
Like most, this is best suited for "maintenance" and not deep cleaning. The dustbin will get filled pretty quick if you haven't vacuumed after a few days, but is sized appropriately for daily use. When in auto clean mode, the POWERbot seems to be good at covering an area efficiently without as much of the random movement and pathing you often see in competing products. This really helps with ensuring a daily scheduled clean covers an area well.
Bottom line, you'll get the most benefit by having the POWERbot run daily. It's nice coming home to a noticeably vacuumed carpet, while at the same time being able to manually control for spot cleaning when needed.

Good wireless/wired over-ear w/active noise cancel
on May 5, 2018
Posted by: RonM
from Sacramento, CA, USA
The Sony WH-CH700N Wireless Noise Canceling Stereo Headset is a set of over-ear headphones with active noise cancelling that can be used wirelessly or wired. From a design perspective, they do not stray too far from what you'd expect, with large oval earpads that shape around your ears. Since they are over-ear headphones, I find them pretty comfortable for long periods of time.
From a feature perspective, I was surprised to find that while these are part of the 2018 lineup, they seem to be missing the latest audio codec, Sony's own LDAC. So, on iOS it will default to AAC, while on Android, it will use aptX HD as long as the source device supports it.
Also, the noise cancelling feature does not seem as aggressive/effective compared to my other Sony sets with similar features, such as last year's WI-1000X. If this is your first experience with active noise cancelling, it still works pretty well though.
From a sound signature perspective, I was slightly underwhelmed. As an over-ear set, I felt that it still left me wanting more bass, although it is good just not great.
The set has spoken prompts when you want to toggle noise cancelling or check the battery level. Speaking of which, Sony provides a Headphones Connect mobile app, which provides various control over the headphones. It also can be used to check the battery level via a mobile device; it does not provide battery level via Android 8.0's standard interface or even iOS (even though the manual says it does). Finally, the battery charge is only reported as high, medium or low.
The ability to use it wired (with noise cancelling still available as an option) is good. It also uses a standard 3.5mm connection.
Besides the headphones, you receive a microUSB cable for charging (power supply not included) and a 3.5mm cable for wired use. For the price, it would have been nice to at least get a storage/carrying case, in my opinion, especially since the earpads can swivel 90 degrees to aid with transport.

Great _Loud_ Sound
on April 16, 2018

from Sacramento, CA, USA
The Sony SRS-XB41 is the biggest of the trio of Sony's 2018 lineup of portable waterproof Bluetooth speakers. (The SRS-XB31 and SRS-XB21 are the other models, which are smaller in size)
The Bluetooth speaker market seems to be booming (pun intended) and I find it sort of amazing the quality of sound you can get from speakers of all sizes now. It seems like not too long ago you had to have large speakers and lots of wattage in order to get enjoyable sound. I'm assuming that improvements in small digital amplifiers, combined with reliable power sources results in the large number of options on the market today.
As for the SRS-XB41, all of the basics are here such as: charging using a standard microUSB; the ability to use it as a power bank via a USB port; a standard 3.5mm input jack if you don't want to use a Bluetooth source; different exterior colors; and IPX7 and IPX6X ratings for waterproof and dust proof performance respectively. Besides the standard microUSB port, you can also use the included AC adapter to charge at a faster 5V 3A rate. Also, it is on the larger side of things which enables louder sound output.
With that said, it appears that Sony chooses to differentiate this offering with some key features.
First, it seems like Sony has used the term EXTRA BASS for decades, which is akin to the Loudness equalization. In practice, I like the sound signature for not being overly boomy, but still adding some equalization curve adjustments.
Second, it supports the LDAC, AAC and of course SBC Bluetooth codecs. LDAC is one of the latest codecs that promises high quality and low latency. Thankfully Google was able to add LDAC support starting with Android 8.0 Oreo. The first time, you'll need to use hardware buttons on the speaker itself to allow access to LDAC. Apple devices at this time will have to settle for using AAC, which I found adds a slightly noticeable audio/visual sync delay.
Third, the SRS-XB41 has integrated multicolor LED lighting than can be set to different modes to go along with the music. Since it uses LEDs the battery impact should be pretty low, but you can disable it all the same if you want.
Fourth, a Party Booster function exists, where the speaker itself can add different sound effects whenever different sides of the speaker are tapped. (Okay, more like slapped; a light tap doesn't really activate it.)
And last, but not least, a Wireless Party Chain function allows multiple (supposedly up to 100) compatible Sony speakers to be chained together. While Bluetooth 5.0 allows for multiple synchronized connections, it is not yet found/available in many devices. With WPC, I was able to connec both the SRS-XB41 and a SRS-XB31 to my Google Pixel XL and play music that was perfectly synchronized between the two speakers.
The SRS-XB41 does report battery level via spoken voice when powered on, when the battery button is pressed, as well as shown in the Sony Music Center app. It does NOT report battery level to iOS or Android via the native means, which is a little unfortunate.
The outer covering has a fabric feel, which is nice to handle and definitely a step up from the typical plastic exterior found on other speakers.
I really enjoy the sound quality and output level that the SRS-XB41 is capable of. Due to its size, the output level gets quite loud. The LED lighting and Party Booster might be novelty things to use in certain situations, but will be unused most of the time for me. Since it supports LDAC, I prefer to use it instead of my other speakers that only support SBC or AAC.

Great Sound, Features, and Quality for the size

Meet the secure, tamper-proof smart lock from Nest and Yale. It’s keyless, so you can lock and unlock the door from anywhere with the Nest app.[1] Give people you trust a passcode instead of a key, and get alerts when they come and go. And lock the door with a tap. If you forget, the Nest x Yale Lock even reminds you.

Works best with Nest Secure, but still good alone
on April 16, 2018

The Nest x Yale is a smart lock that integrates into the Nest family of products. As a smart lock from Nest, you would expect it to be stylish, easy to use, and with extra features. For the most part, you would be correct.
First off, the Nest x Yale has a very nice and clean appearance with a lighted keypad that is not visible when not in use. Push the Yale logo and the keypad lights up, ready for input. The lock on the interior side of the door is pretty large, as it houses 4 AA batteries (included). Besides the manual locking mechanism, there is also a button that can be used to activate (or check) Privacy Mode. With Privacy Mode enabled, the touchpad is basically disabled and the only way to open the door from outside is to use the Nest app.
There is an audible speaker, but it is on the outside of the door, so you won't hear prompts as easily when inside (such as activating the previously mentioned Privacy Mode).
You'll need to rely on the Nest app to access most of the features, such as setting an Auto-Locking timer. Currently, you have a choice of 10 seconds, 1 minute, or 10 minutes for Auto-Lock. Also, there are no voice activation features, but supposedly that could be coming.
Within the app, you also can create multiple access codes and view the Lock History.
Installation was pretty straightforward; basically remove the existing deadbolt and install this one. A Nest Connect is included in the retail package, which is required if you don't have a Nest Secure. (If you do, the Nest Guard connects to the Nest x Yale directly.)
Ultimately, the Nest x Yale will work best in conjunction with Nest Secure since it technically can't tell for sure by itself if a door was opened, closed, or left open, where a Nest Detect can. But in conjunction with a Nest Detect, you can automatically lock or unlock a closed door.

Stylish well-rounded sound; A/V sync issues on iOS
on March 28, 2018
Posted by: RonM
from Sacramento, CA, USA
Sennheiser has a pretty good reputation for putting out stylish and great sounding headphones. These in-ear headphones are the HD1 Free, which are In-Ear Wireless headphones within the HD1 Family of products. The HD1 family of products are "headphones with MOMENTUM" which means they are focused towards smartphone usage by incorporating a microphone and remote buttons, as opposed to simply headphones. These aren't a "true wireless" set like some on the market, as they do have a cord connecting the two earbuds together. They are fairly symmetric in design with the in-line controls below the right earbud and what I presume is the battery below the left earbud. The cord connecting the two is red/black, while the earbuds have a stainless steel finish which is just magnetic enough to keep the two earbuds together when not in-use. Overall, these look great, are very light and the three ear adapter sizes hopefully make for a snug fit.
But how do they sound/perform? From a codec perspective, they support AAC, aptX and of course SBC. This means on the iPhone, it will use AAC while on supported Android devices aptX will be preferred. First off, they're straightforward enough to pair with both the iPhone and Android.
On both my iPhone X (running iOS 11.3 Public Betas) and iPhone 7 (iOS 11.2.2), battery life is reported which is nice and pretty much expected nowadays. However, I noticed with both that the audio is not perfectly synced with video, which is a little disappointing. I've seen this on true wireless sets, but never on a "regular" Bluetooth set like these.
On my Android devices (Pixel XL and Essential Phone, both with Oreo 8.1), battery life is also reported. aptX is used with both, and audio IS in sync with video.
I'm hoping the sync issue on iOS can be improved via updates, assuming the HD1 Free can be updated. Sennheiser does have a mobile app, CapTune, but I can't tell if it can provide product updates or is simply used for equalization tweaks.
From a sound perspective, I've found that Sennheiser products provide a well-rounded sound without any loudness or overexagerated bass response, and the HD1 Free seems to follow along those lines. Like most in-ears, you'll get the best sound quality with a snug fit. Battery life has also been very good and the set is very light; you don't really feel the connecting cord from a weight perspective.
Overall, I recommend these if you prefer a well-rounded sound signature, but be aware of the A/V sync issues on iOS.

Stream your favorite shows on this 60-inch Hisense television. Its 3840 x 2160 resolution and 8 ms response time bring scenes to life, and 4K upscaling transforms lower quality video into HD resolution. Competitively priced with all expected features
on March 2, 2018
Posted by: RonM
from Sacramento, CA, USA
The TV market is as competitive as ever and when it comes to large 4K TVs, I expect at least 3 HDMI ports, 4K60p support, Smart/App support, and at least one USB port. The Hisense 60DU6070 was released in 2017 and checks all these boxes. 3D is out and 4K is in, although ironically it seems like there are still more 3D sources than 4K sources. Anyway, this Hisense supports 4K at up to 60Hz. With my Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 and an appropriate cable, I was able to connect and see a very clear picture. The need to connect a computer is lessened however, due to the Smart (aka apps) feature. You'll find apps for Netflix, VUDU, and more on-board. Navigating is responsive and one of the benefits of using the built-in Netflix app is its support for 4K (assuming you're paying for that option in your plan). Unless you have one of the latest streaming boxes that supports 4K output, you'll need to use the app for 4K)
If you haven't purchased a TV in a decade, you might be surprised to hear the sound quality. As TVs have gotten thinner with small bezels, sound quality from the built-in speakers is not as good as older TVs. This is easily remedied via the use of a soundbar or surround sound system. With that said, the Hisense's built-in speakers sound a little better than I expected, but I still pair it with a soundbar.
Of course, most sources are not 4K and the TV does a nice job of upsampling to improve on the source. It of course will not compare to true 4K but it's definitely not as bad as when the first HD TVs came out and watching SD material.
There are detachable legs included with the TV for tabletop use, but they attach towards the edges of the TV meaning you'll need at least a 45" wide surface. This can be remedied (which I did) by purchasing third-party mounts that use the VESA mounting interface. Or of course you can wall mount.
Overall, I found this a competitive option when it comes to a 60" 4K Smart TV. This may be a Best Buy-exclusive model as I don't see any 60" models on the Hisense website.

Good option to have when needed
on January 30, 2018

The Nest Secure security system communicates with the Nest Detect sensors wirelessly, but it doesn't use Wi-Fi but the "Thread" networking protocol. The Nest Connect is an optional range extender that can help when dealing with a large distance between the base (Nest Guard) and the sensors, or if you run into wireless interference. It does not extend Wi-Fi.
Installation of the Nest Connect is as easy as most Nest products, and requires the use of the Nest app you already have installed.
My home did not need the Nest Connect with the Nest Detects mounted in "normal" positions. But, when I placed the Nest Guard in the farthest corner of the house and a Nest Detect in the opposite further corner, the Nest Connect did seem to help.
So, it can be useful/necessary for certain situations but first try installing without.

Tough on bad guys. Easy on you.The Nest Secure alarm system is easy to live with every day. Just tap Nest Tag on Nest Guard to arm and disarm the alarm - no passcode needed. Nest Detect sensors look out for doors, windows and rooms. And with the Nest app, you can keep an eye on what matters.

Sleek and easy to use, at a premium price point
on January 30, 2018
Posted by: RonM
from Sacramento, CA, USA
The Nest Secure is the first entry in the wireless home alarm system market from Nest. As a user of multiple Nest products, I expected a system that was easy to use and looked good at the same time. I was not disappointed in either aspect.
But first, let me begin by saying that I am familiar with wireless home alarm systems, having installed a few systems myself. The systems I installed include 24/7 monitoring for a monthly fee; the Nest Secure does offer professional monitoring as an option.
I found that the Nest Secure Starter Kit was as easy or easier to install. Everything was included to mount the two included sensors (Nest Detect). The Nest Detect sensors actually function as door/window switches as well as motion detectors, which is handy.
The base (Nest Guard) is modern looking but can still easily blend into a room.
Even though you can punch in a code to disarm, two included fobs (Nest Tag) make it easier.
Being a Nest product, the mobile app is a critical piece to getting the most out of the system. The Nest app is used to control all the various Nest products, and is updated pretty frequently. With the Nest app, you can arm/disarm the Nest Secure and even have it automatically arm/disarm using geofencing.
Again, comparing to other wireless home security systems, the siren is indoors so is primarily designed to be heard by an intruder, versus the whole neighborhood. In that regard, it works as well as I would expect it to. The Nest app also is valuable for getting notified in the event of alarm activity, and if you have other Nest products (such as Nest Cam), you can potentially see what's going on all in the same app.
Overall, the Nest Secure met my expectations although I have to admit at a premium price. I would have preferred a little lower price, or perhaps two more Nest Detect sensors to be included. If you're already a Nest product owner however, the price could be worth it for the consideration, as opposed to having to jump from one app to another.
