Good performance Laptop, poor battery
on April 30, 2024
Posted by: hokie00
This laptop performs fine for video, streaming and browsing. The full keyboard is nice with a side number pad. The keys are not backlit and the battery runs out quicker than I'd like.
The laptop came ready for setup out of the box and it includes the charging block and plug. The block uses the rectangular plug similar in size to a USB-A (special plug, not interchangeable like USB-C). The laptop is a larger style with a full base and not compact like the chromebooks. In the thicker base there is a fan for cooling unlike many of the slim models, so that's a bonus but makes it larger.
The laptop comes loaded w/ Windows for you to setup new or sign in with your existing account and add the new laptop. The screen size is nice and full, very limited plastic edge.
It has a large center touchpad and full keyboard (with larger than usual buttons). The key response feels nice and responsive. The keypad is not backlit so it is not easy to use in the dark. The sound and video quality is good. The battery ran down quickly when it was not in use so I would plan to leave this laptop plugged in and only unplug it while in use so you are not caught by surprise that it is dead when not in use.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Poor Cut and blade heads weren't comfortable
on April 30, 2024
Posted by: hokie00
The trimmer was easy to setup and get started. It has a regular head and a raised guard for different lengths.
The trimmer is difficult to get a close smooth cut, and is not as easy to use as my previous beard trimmer style device. I would recommend a trimmer with fixed guards.
The trimmer comes with a charging cord, no charging block, a smooth guard and a raised guard.
The main issues with the oneblade trimmer is it requires the blade to be placed flat against the skin to get a close cut. However, the close guard does not provide enough protection and it feels as though the blades may cut your private areas (due to folds and other areas). If you keep the blade head raised in any way it will give you an uneven cut and defeats the purpose.
I have not tried the raised green guard since I was looking for a trim closer than it would provide.
I believe this trimmer may work ok for smoother areas like the thighs or below your stomach, but did not feel comfortable using on my pubic area.
The charge seemed fine after initial charge and I had no issues with the battery running out.
I would not recommend this product.

Great Cameras-easy install-no base station
on November 29, 2023
Posted by: hokie00
I will start this off with a preface that I have been using Arlo cameras for several years and this is my third model. The setup and install was fairly easy but I have had practice.
The improvements over previous models are clear. The images are clearer and brighter (offering color images in the dark when they used to be black/white) and better battery life. I cannot tell if the wireless range is improved or not.
Also, if you are adding to an existing system, great. If not then you will also need to purchase the base station hub. This only includes cameras.
So first in the box is:
4 cameras with mounting hardware to drill/screw into your interior/exterior walls
USB-C charging cord, but no wall brick plug
super short setup instructions (may need more info from the app or online)
a yard sign to advertise for Arlo.
You will need to install & setup the App if you do not already have a system installed. I needed to update my app to use the new cameras.
You will need to charge the cameras to get a full charge but mine arrived w/ around 50% battery. FYI they only provide one cord so you can charge 1 at a time unless you have additional cords/plugs. So far I have had them running for 2 weeks and they are still at 80% (much better than my old ones that would need charging 1-2 times per month if used frequently)
The directions to setup cameras in the app is pretty good & you can just follow them step by step to sync and connect. You should name them so you can identify them later & label the actual camera too. FYI if you have an existing system you can just add them rather than starting over. & if you are retiring cameras just delete them after.
Be aware to check your settings and notifications. I had problems getting notifications and had to reset everything. The Arlo help team was good. You should probably go through and reset all your notifications anyway to be safe.
I had to search on how to mount the cameras, but basically you screw in the small sliding clip to the back of the camera, then screw in the wall clip into the wall. The camera & clip will slide into the mount.
Once they are installed aim and setup your app settings.
Some features on the new app version
quick change settings ARM AWAY; ARM HOME; STANDBY. You can preset these 3 and add others if you like. You can set certain cameras to be active or not based on if you are home/etc.
You can use the cameras to communicate to someone (use the speaker if you are away and need to talk to a delivery person like Ring)-this is an old feature but cool.
There is an emergency feature w/ siren you can turn on
.
Lots of other stuff to test out. There is a free trial w/ the cameras for extended video services, but once done I use the free version and you can only save 7 days of video before it overwrites.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Why settle for a single band when you can choose daily between two unique options? The Insignia NS-AWB412PKIM Silicone and Nylon Bands for Apple Watch 38mm, 40mm and 41mm (2-Pack) delivers the best of both worlds with two different bands to choose from. A durable silicone band with secure clasp stays firmly in place all day, while a soft nylon band with loop closure is comfortable for everyday wear. Both bands sport a water-resistant design for any activity, rain or shine. Two are certainly better than one with this Insignia silicone and nylon band 2-pack.

Good bands, don't fit all wrists
on November 29, 2023
Posted by: hokie00
The bands are a match for the sizes listed. My wife used these on her apple watch se 38mm. She's had the watch for 2-3 years now and has not been able to find a replacement band she likes. These two are ok and good if you like to change up once in a while. However, the blue plastic band does not fit well on smaller wrists and sticks out all over (see photo). The pink fabric band is a more snug fit and easy to change out if you like.
These two bands are easy to install out of the box. There are no parts or tools needed. You simply press the small release buttons on the back of the watch to slide the old band off, then you can slide the new band in.
My wife likes the option for switching bands between working out and getting dirty allowing her time to wash and dry the band and still able to use the watch. The blue band is plastic and is quick & easy to wash/dry. The pink band is fabric but also quick and easy to wash/dry. It is ready to replace within minutes.
Neither band has the regular snap style apple clasp. The blue one you can see from the picture has a traditional watch metal pin/clasp, and the pink one is velcro.
Good bands both of them & easy to install/clean, but the blue one works better for larger wrists.

Keyboard works well-larger & heavier than expected
on October 2, 2023
Posted by: hokie00
The Jlab keyboard works well and was easy to initially setup for bluetooth and wireless use.
I had some difficulty with the keyboard app on my laptop to setup the custom key functions but the JLab tech support was able to help me pretty quickly (I needed to sync up the keyboard for the app to recognize it)
My only issues with the keyboard that would move it to 4 or 5 stars is:
It's heavier and larger than I expected-I planned to use this for a traveling keyboard and the size and volume know don't fit in my bag.
The sleep/wakeup is slow sometimes causing me to start typing before it's awake (& I'll be partway through a sentence before I realize the first half is missing)
The key and custom key setup could use some work-there are only 3 keys you can customize and the F-keys are reverse of what I prefer.
Quick summary:
out of the box easy to start up (except for the app). You can turn on and plug in the wireless dongle or sync up w/ Bluetooth.
It comes with the wireless dongle, and a USB charging cable.
The keyboard has a fairly typical layout for normal office/home use (not for gaming). It also has a full number pad on the right. They keys have a good feel/response.
The app install instructions need some work. After initial install, the app would not recognize my keyboard and I needed tech support to sync them up. (tech was helpful & quick but would be nice to just include it w/ the instructions).
There are just 3 keys above the arrow keys to customize. There are plenty of options but typical layout would be Ins/Home/End. You need to set these up in the app while using the wireless dongle.
Back to my top comments. The keyboard size is typical for a desktop wired keyboard and does not fit in my laptop bag. Also the volume know on the top sticks out & I fear may be something that breaks off taking in and out of a bag.
To save battery life the keyboard goes to sleep when not in use for a while (I have had no battery issues and have not charged it yet after the few days of use). It takes a few seconds to wake up and there is a lag in the initial response. Once awake it is very responsive.
Last, I have had this F-key issue with other after market keyboards. I prefer the F-keys to be default (F1-F12), and on this keyboard the alternate functions are the default (i.e. brightness control, search, volume control, play up/back, etc.).
In all a good keyboard and I would recommend it. The main issue I have is the size for portability.

Very nice laptop predatorsense system is good
on August 27, 2023
Posted by: hokie00
Easy to set up out of the box
The laptop set includes the laptop the power block (very large like most gaming laptops) and carrying sleeve.
The initial setup is typical for windows systems and walk you through it with voice or written steps. You can choose to setup a new account or transfer from an existing account/device.
It took just a few minutes to get up and running. I ran into some issues with one of the software apps but I was able to reinstall it and get my system transferred.
The battery life is average for a gaming laptop. There are settings you can adjust to improve the battery life.
The casing is high quality and seems to hold up well to the abuses of daily use. The built in camera provided a surprisingly sharp image and the trackpad sensitivity can be altered to an extremely fine degree. Perhaps its most visibly notable feature, the cooling system, is well worth its weight in gold. It's fairly compact, noticeably quiet, and the most effective i've ever seen on a portable device. In addition to all the excellent hardware, included with the purchase was the easy to navigate PredatorSense system monitoring application. This is an easy way to monitor exact gpu usage from specific applications as well as track the cooling system's speed and power usage and customize fun keyboard lighting effects.

Large speaker ok sound good battery &lights; heavy
on August 21, 2023
Posted by: hokie00
This LG speaker is large and heavy. The sound is good but not loud in an open area. The battery lasts pretty long and it’s easy to get setup.
The app has extra features
The speaker comes in the box with a power cord and quick start guide only. You do not need much else to get started but there is an online guide to download that provides additional information. You can simply connect to your mobile device via Bluetooth to begin. If you download the app there are additional features available like light controls, sound equalizer, and music mixing/sound effects among others.
You can have the lights match the music or separate pattern and link up with your phone lights (will drain phone battery if you leave it running)
The speaker says water resistant and the back has a rubber cover protecting a usb, power, microphone, guitar jacks. There is a karaoke option
The speaker says 12 hours of nonstop play. I have not drained the battery yet after a full charge but only used it for a few hours
Indoor the speaker is plenty loud but out in an open field on full blast it lacks
The speaker is about 10”x10”x30” and is pretty heavy. It would be nice if this included wheels or a cart because I wouldn’t want to carry it more than 50’
Overall a good speaker, great for indoor not blasting for outdoor. Pretty heavy so don’t plant to carry it to the park. Easy to setup and many features on the app. Cool light display

Ring is OK, bulky and expensive
on July 3, 2023
Posted by: hokie00
This ring is just OK. It's a little overpriced for purchase and subscription for what you get. It may be a good buy for you if you don't wish to wear a smartwatch but still want the activity, sleep, and health tracking. The ring looks good (like a normal silver band). The company is good about getting you to size it first before ordering to avoid returns/etc. Looking online you may need to pay for the sizing kit and get a coupon for the amount to use later. My opinion is they should include it in the ring price and not make you pay twice. Maybe you can use the coupon for money off the ring price.
Here is the process: order the kit and it comes with 6 or so sizes to test out for a day or so. They recommend using your index(pointer) finger as it reads the best and you probably don't already have a ring on it. Once you pick your size, you send it into them for the actual ring. They recommend you keep the kit for others to try if they want to order.
The ring out of the box looked good (sliver band) but feels light and plastic-y (which it is but not what I was hoping for) The setup was easy - you need to install the Oura app and setup an account. The account is free for a month then there is a monthly fee after. This is a negative for me. I don't think the app features are worth it. There are better tracking apps for a smartwatch etc that are free.
Then start using it. and checking your updates in the app; sleep activity workouts there are a lot of features and lots of articles to read up on healthy living (bonus but not worth the subscription)
The benefits - I wanted the sleep tracking and don't wear a smartwatch to bed so that's good. very low battery use; I have gone 5+ days w/o a recharge (it says keep it above 30% to work properly) lots of metrics to track (more than you probably need or want to sort through)
negatives - the subscription fee, you can turn the watch to airplane mode to save battery, but you need to put it on the charger to reconnect it (so don't do this if you don't have the charger handy)
not much better than the smartwatch I already have and the app is free. it is bulkier than I expected and doesn't feel very comfortable (slimmer and a little heavier would have been preferred)
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Fun Scooter, heavy, tall
on June 26, 2023
Posted by: hokie00
I received and setup this electric scooter a little over a week ago. The assembly is fairly simple and the instructions are easy too.
My main comments are:
it's pretty heavy (obvious to some, it's a motorized scooter and has a large batter and motor, so duh). But you realize it if you try to carry it up/down stairs, or lift it over a curb.
It takes a while to charge (books says around 6 hr)
It's pretty tall and the handlebars sit high for me-I am 5-9.
It does go 20mph and get's there quick on flat or gentle slope.
Here's the setup/ride experience.
The box says 80lb but it seems heavier to me (I'm used to lighter scooters/bikes w/o motor)
Easy to unpack and get setup. The only assembly is to attach the handle bars to the main post. It's collapsible for storage so it comes that way. You stand up the post and clip it in place, then attached the handlebars w/ the provided screws and wrench.
Mine did not come with a charge on it so I plugged it in for a full charge. I had it for about 2 hours before I tried to test it but still wouldn't turn on, so I plugged it in for the rest of the night to get 6+ hours. The plug is a small laptop size cord/plug that goes into the covered socket near the rear wheel. Once charged:
Collapsed/stored it takes up about 1'x4'x1' folded. To open/operate you unclip the handlebars from the rear wheel with the release button, then stand it up completely until it clips into the upright position and secure the safety over the clip (it is clear as you look at the front wheel/handlebar). (To store/collapse you do the reverse.)
All the screen/display controls are done w/ a single button:
Hold-power on
Hold-power off
push once-switch from Pedestrian(P)to Eco(E) to Drive(D) to Sport(S)
push twice-turn on/off headlights (headlights are on automatic for Ped mode-you have to turn them on for the others)
Ped goes up to 3MPH, Eco up to 10MPH, Drive up to 15MPH, and Sport up to 20MPH. All these on a flat or low slope. Steeper slopes will drop off a few MPH. You can push to assist.
The scooter does not start powered from a stop but just a single kick-push is plenty.
The power/gas is a push lever on the right handle (where a bike gear shift would be) and the brakes are on the front of each handle bar like a bike.
My comments on the gas & brake are as follows:
the brakes aren't great. I was depressing completely before fully engaged - so be aware of steel hills and stopping distance. It does not stop on a dime.
the gas lever works well but is tough to maintain a speed other than full speed. Due to the scooter bouncing w/ normal riding vibrations and start/stop it felt jumpy while trying to maintain a speed.
Last is with the height and the riding deck:
the handlebars sit high for me (mid chest level) and the riding deck is higher than a normal Razor scooter. This makes it a little uncomfortable, and difficult if you wanted to push and motor assist. The deck is about 6" from the ground. Second is for that high deck there is not much clearance. I had to lift/lower to get over small steps or curbs.
Fun scooter, could use some tweaks.

Nice laptop for light browsing not powerful
on June 20, 2023
Posted by: hokie00
The Dell laptop was easy to setup initially. It took a bit to reset after I entered the wrong Microsoft login and had to reset to start over. So do it right the first time. Getting started was pretty easy for a beginner but there are a lot of preset apps and other ads and sales that can be annoying. It took me a while to remove the ones I didn’t want and all that extra stuff just slows things down.
The laptop is a good size and weight. It’s not slim or very light but not too heavy either. The top/screen does lift the base up which is unusual and I am not a fan. The hinge position kind of rocks the screen to under the keyboard which gives it a slight slant.
The screen looks and feels like a standard laptop but it is a touchscreen rest assured.
The ports are 1 usbA 1 usbC 1 micro SD 1 headphone 1 usbC power. I would like an extra usbC or usbA and an hdmi for better flexibility.
Web browsing and wifi speed is ok but now great. I could not pin point anything specific causing slower than expected speeds.
Some auto set features like search bars and ads would be better left uninstalled. But instead you may want to spend a few minutes removing them or try a custom setup (I couldn’t figure out how). Some of the popups were annoying during school activities and tests
Last is some key setups. The hot control keys up top need fn to work. It would be better if the volume/brightness/etc were the main function and the f1/f2/etc were secondary and used the fn key

Great new phone-easy IOS switch
By hokie00 from MD
I really like this new Google phone
The screen size is a great jump from my iPhone 5s
The camera quality is much better and the fingerprint scanner (located on the back) works well and fast
The switchover was pretty easy from my old phone
And the new Google assistant easily competes with her apple counterpart
The screen size is large and very clear. A little too large for my back pocket. I enjoy it but will have to find a better way to carry it
The phone is very thin and light so doesn't feel bulky
There is no home button so that was an adjustment as was going back to android from iOS after a few years. But it was like riding a bike-I didn't forget
There's a cool shake function for the camera that switches from front to back as well as several other motion functions you can setup
I also prefer the android keyboards over the apple ones (numbers on all the time)
I have been having trouble finding a variety of cases for the phone so far (likely due to the recent release ). I expect more to be available soon
Overall a great phone. Nice large screen for games videos or anything. New OS is fast and works very well. Screen setup is easy to navigate and the google assistant unlock function is cool. You can unlock the phone with your saved voice saying 'OK Google'
You will be happy with this phone if you are ready for a switch or an android upgrade

New port/charging cable
October 23, 2016
This is hokie00 alter ego.
I wanted to add to my review something I had left out. Google went with a new charging plug/port for the Pixel. The port in the bottom of the phone is not micro-USB like most anroids before. It is a new port (Google-USB-C))about the same size as micro-USB or apple's lightning. It is reversible like the lightning plug so you won't have to worry about plugging it in the wrong way like the old apple plugs or USB.
The phone came with one wall charging cord and one connecting cord for USB. The wall charging cord has the same new connector - USB-C on both ends and the wall plug accepts the new connector only. The 2nd cord has the USB-C connector and a USB end. The phone also came with a USB to USB-C dongle in case you only wanted to carry one cable but wanted to be able to charge via USB or USB-C

Speaker sound OK-some quirks/defects
By hokie00 from MD
The speaker sounds good, and has a good volume range getting loud enough for outside noise.
It has a good range on Bluetooth 70 feet or more in an office around walls for controls and volume adjustment.
It is a good size, a little heavy but feels sturdy for outside/beach/park type use. It's approximately 3"x3"x9". There is a compartment on the bottom for storage/plugs, and the charger/additional plug are located on one end. The opposite end has the power/lock buttons.
Controls are as follows:
End-Power and lock out toggle (to lock controls from accidental touch)
Other end-USB plug/charger for device/phone, DC Power charger for speaker, .8mm headphone jack audio in for device/phone play
Top-Bluetooth sync, skip back, play/pause, volume up, volume down, skip forward, change input (from Bluetooth to either jack)
Bottom-inside 4.7"x2"x0.5" closable storage compartment 2nd USB charger, 2nd .8mm headphone jack audio in for play.
The speaker comes with the user manual and the DC plug for charging.
Bluetooth sync worked easily.
The lock/unlock function is a nice feature to avoid unwanted song/volume/etc. changes
Issues I had with the speaker below.
The first thing I noticed is the compartment is very small, not large enough for most phones to keep inside (4.7x2x0.5) and won't fit an iPhone 5s w/o case. Also if you use the plugs in the compartment you have to leave it open and either on it's side/upside down making access to the top controls difficult. It looks like this is to store a very small wallet/money clip or license/credit cards/cash and not a phone or ipod.
The USB plugs are out only and used to charge, not play the device. So if you want to plug in your phone to charge you will have to also use the .8mm jack or Bluetooth in order to play (jack would be a problem, Bluetooth is fine)
The 2nd USB plug inside the compartment did not work to charge my phone, I assume this is just a defect in the model I received. I was unable to test the .8mm jacks since I don't have one and one was not provided. I'll assume they work and the function toggle turned off the Bluetooth so that seems to confirm it.
The outside USB charger works to charge but is not fast either with the speaker on battery or plugged in. It is probably just a little better than holding a charge while playing music or using your phone. My Pixel XL went from 66% to 72% in about 10-15 minutes while plugged in.
The speaker has a front/back speaker but only one of mine worked. I thought initially it was a stereo issue based on the music I was playing but I tried multiple sources for audio and it still only played through the one speaker. Again I'll assume this is isolated to the unit I received and not the way it is supposed to work. (I will contact the manufacturer about this issue and see how it is supposed to function. I will add/comment to this review with any update.)
Last issue is with the DC plug and only a minor compatibility issue and a suggestion for future models. The DC plug to charge the speaker is the small round type with a pin in the middle and not compatible with many other devices. It would be helpful if this was a micro-USB or USB-C, or Apple Lightning or other frequently used adapter type. The plug was provided so there's no issue using it, but it would be helpful if it was a type of plug/cord I already own in case of loss of damage.
All in all an okay speaker for sound quality, the compartment should be larger to handle a smart phone. The multiple plugs for charge/play are a nice feature but the plugs inside the compartment seem awkward to use.

OK Speaker Update
May 19, 2017
I offered above an amendment after issues I experienced after initial test.
Some items I was incorrect about in my review, others were not explained in the user manual (small paper copy included or full online version)
I was corrected in that the speaker only includes one speaker and not two (one on each side like I thought). The metal grill w/ LIFEPROOF on it is the speaker, the back side w/ nothing on it is just for show (no speaker).
I have also discovered an additional quirk that I thought was a defect. The full online manual explains that only one USB charger will work at a time. I initially thought the drybox USB did not work. In order to get the drybox USB to work you must toggle through to that audio source. So if you are playing through the drybox audio in cable you can charge using that USB. If you are playing through Bluetooth or the outside audio in cable you can charge using the outside USB. I had to find this by experiment. Because there is no readout (to keep the speaker waterproof I presume) there is difficulty telling which source your are on (other than when it's Bluetooth, the BT indicator is lit, and when it's one of the two cable audio in the BT is not lit.
As a result of this I also tested out both cable audio in jacks and they work fine. The drybox cable jack has little clearance so a thinner audio cable is recommended or just use the outside audio in.
As an additional note, the speaker is not waterproof when the Drybox is open (i.e. w/ cables sticking out) so you would probably not want to use it anyway unless you wanted to have two different device cables plugged in at once (which it can handle but only plays one at a time-source toggle)
The Bluetooth call/answer/hangup function works well on the speaker also. Simply press Play to answer & hold Play to hangup.
All in all a good speaker. (Better than I initially thought the first time testing it). The only changes I would like are to have two speakers (one each side) a larger Drybox (go up the the AQ11 when it's available) and a little better clearance on the audio in jack in Drybox for regular size cables.
I'd change this to a 3 Star instead if I could after the retest.

Experience immersive entertainment options with this Sony 4K Blu-ray player. Its Ultra HD resolution provides exceptionally detailed screen images with increased brightness and more realistic color, and its support of Dolby Atmos and DTS:X provides cinema-quality sound. This Sony 4K Blu-ray player supports high-resolution audio formats for more accurate music reproduction.

Can you put a HD cord in this 4K player? Because I don’t own an 4K tv!!

The output to tv is HDMI. If you have an HDTV it will be fine. 4K TV is not required.
But you will only get as good a picture as your tv will support.

If you do not have an HDMI input for your TV it will not work for you.

PC compatible?

I have not tried them on the PC, but all my other Xbox headsets have worked on the PC. I would assume these do also.
The PC seems to be the most forgiving/accommodating. It's Xbox and PS4 that seem to be picky

Enjoy crisp, colorful picture quality with this Full HD HP monitor. The ultrathin bezel on the 27-inch screen provides an expansive viewing area so you can stay productive, and its AMD FreeSync technology reduces input lag and screen tearing. This HP monitor has two HDMI ports for connecting gaming consoles and other devices.

Can this be turned vertically in its stand?

No, it's made to set horizontal, but it will rock back and forth for view angle adjustment.

How is the input lag on this monitor? I did a bit of googling and I was unable to find this stat.

I did not notice a lag between my laptop and the monitor.

Is there a removeable screen protector on the monitor from the manufacturer? It appears to have a removeable film, but I'm worried it's supposed to be there and if I remove it then the monitor will be messed up.

No, not that I received.

These Skullcandy Method headphones come with round earpiece covers that fit into the ear to block out external sound.

Did anyone had a problem connecting it to their phone? I tried in two different phones and I couldn’t.

I had no problem connecting to my Pixel XL.
I did not try any others.

What type of phone are you trying and is it blue tooth enabled?

It has expressive LCD eyes and a hi-fi speaker to embody the spirit of the Cars character, and its dedicated app lets you control it from your mobile device. This Sphero Ultimate Lightning McQueen car provides over 2 hours of play on a full charge.

I purchased the Ultimate Lightening McQueen Mobile App Control Car. When I tried to download the mobile app, I was asked for my credit card verification but there is no price listed anywhere. Does anyone know what it costs?

The app should be free.
