Great tablet replacement

There are a lot of people wondering if they should get this device or the Surface Pro 4. For me, the bottom line is this...
If you want a laptop replacement that can perform as a tablet, I think you should get the Surface Pro 4.
If you want a tablet replacement that can perform computer related tasks, get the Samsung TabPro S.
I could see this being a perfect device for a High School or College student as long as they are not editing video or running CAD programs.
I was in the market to replace my Samsung Tab S so I picked this up at Best Buy for $800.
The Pros:
Price. I don't think anything out there can touch it with the specs you get.
Thin and light, can be used as a tablet lounging around the house.
Has a full blown version of Windows 10, not a watered down tablet version.
Except for really intensive computing tasks, this device can basically do what your home computer can do. I'm able remote desktop into work servers.
Keyboard/Case included. The keyboard is taking a little bit of a beating in a lot of reviews. I had the original surface and the keyboard is very similar to that. I'm just happy to have a keyboard included instead of paying an extra $100 plus for one.
Screen, it has a beautiful Quad HD screen
Doesn't get hot with heavy usage.
No noise, there is no fan so no noise.
Cons
Keyboard/Case only has 2 viewing angles.
Single USB C port. I thought this was going to be an issue but for me it really wasn't. I have a WD Cloud drive in my home and I loaded software from it.
Verdict still out on...
Battery life. I've only had it a week so I can't really make a great comment on that.
How well the Faux leather case will hold up over time.
I hope this helps.

Great backup phone for the price
on June 21, 2015

I purchased this phone during Best Buy’s four hour sale for $19.95 as a backup phone. In fact, because the price was so low, I purchased three of them so everyone with a phone in my family could have a backup. I once watched my son’s (not yet paid off) Samsung S4 fly off a rollercoaster.
I’m on T-Mobile and this is an AT&T GoPhone. I was able to go on AT&T’s web site and unlock all them for free! (more on the unlocking later)
As a backup phone, I’m impressed. I’ve been using it as my daily driver for a week and it does everything I need it to do. I’ve read a few reviews that say this is a great backup phone, great first smartphone, and great phone for your kids. All true depending on how you use your phone. For me it does everything I need it to do but I’m not a Snapchater or and Instramer.
My normal daily driver has been an LG G2 and an OnePlus One. Both Android based phones.
Let’s start with the bad…
The camera…Only 5 megapixel with no flash. Pictures are ok in good lighting but poor in low light. No front facing camera so no selfies without a mirror and forget about Skype. Well, technically, you can still use Skype for calls, just no video
Only 8GB of internal storage, but an expansion slot is available.
The text messenger app. It’s functional but runs into issues if you have a contact that has multiple cell phones. If the send you a text from both, it ends up in the same thread and when they respond, you can’t tell which texts came from which number. This is a huge pain. On an android phone, it will break the texts up into separate threads.
The on screen keyboard. You have to switch to another keyboard to get numbers and special characters, like the $, %, etc.
The apps. This really isn’t the phones fault but the Windows store is significantly behind the Apple App Store and the Google Play store. My guess is that if you’re a developer, trying to make a buck, you’re going to go with the platform where there are more phones and maximize your ability to make money. It’s funny to me, that a software company as big as Microsoft, has trouble giving you the apps and functionality to make their phones more successful.
If there were more apps, it could fix the texting and keyboard issues here. On Android there are plenty of free texting apps and keyboards to choose from.
Email and Text notifications. When you get a text or an email, you have a notification in the notification bar at the top of the screen. The problem is it’s the same notification whether it’s an email or a text or both. They are not separate.
Now, for the good…
Price, even if you pay $50 for this phone, where else are you going to get a smartphone that you can unlock for less than that?
It’s 4G LTE speeds for data. I tested this out with the SpeedTest app and this phone is every bit as fast as my flagship Android phones for data speeds.
Call quality. Calls are very clear on the phone and on a Bluetooth headset.
Car Mode. This is pretty awesome. If you connect a Bluetooth device, your car’s Bluetooth counts, you can set the phone up to automatically go into car mode. This allows the phone to read your text messages to you and for you to respond to them, all without touching the phone. I tested this out and it works great.
The ability to put different emails into the email app. I have a windows live, yahoo, gmail, and work based IMAP email account all working in this application.
Google contacts integration. When hooking up Gmail, it also pulls in the contacts, a huge plus for me as my phones have been Android phones for years now.
The size of the phone. It may be just me but I’m getting a little tired of these huge phones. Anything that has a screen bigger than 5 inches is too big. Too big in my pocket, too big in my hand. This phone has a 4.5 inch screen. The phone is light and easy to put in and out of a pocket.
Cortona – This was a pleasant surprise. Putting in reminders and calendar events are fast and easy. Also, just asking for directions will automatically find the place you are looking for and pull up HERE maps.
HERE maps – not as good as Google maps, put pretty darn good. Turn by turn directions and a nice… added bonus, the street limit signs right on the screen so you know what the speed limit is. Also, you can download the entire North America map right to your phone.
Expandable storage. You can add expandable storage, but I’m not sure the maximum amount, I think it’s 128GB. The great thing about the expandable storage on a windows phone is that you can actually use it to install applications, not just for pictures, music, and movies.
For only 512MB memory, this phone is pretty snappy. The animations are smooth and fast.
For a non HD display, the screen looks really good. Not as good as HD but good.
I know I said the app store was weaker, and it is, but most of the primary apps are there. Facebook, twitter, Instagram, NetFlix, Amazon, Youtube (not from Microsoft, other vendors, Microsoft’s app is simply a link to the mobile Youtube page)
You can unlock this phone for free. The techs and Best Buy said you can’t but they are wrong.
How to unlock this phone.
1. Do not turn the phone on, don’t even open the box.
2. Go to this web site: https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/?#/
3. Check I have read and agree to the eligibility requirements to unlock my device.
4. This is super important, check Non-AT&T Mobility Customer
5. Fill out the form, including the IMEI number which is located on the Box
6. Submit
7. You will be sent an email with a link to confirm
8. Open your email and confirm
9. Anywhere from 1 hour to 48 hours you will be given an unlock code. It took 8 hours for me to receive mine.
10. Open up the box, put in your SIM from your Carrier and turn it on.
11. You will be prompted for the unlock code
12. Put it in and continue.
If you don’t get an unlock code for some reason, return the phone without opening the box. I bought three phones, and got unlock codes for all three.
One more thing…Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT upload the Windows 10 preview. It rendered the phone almost unusable. Fortunately, Microsoft created a program to revert the phone back to windows 8.1.
Overall, I still prefer the Android experience over windows. I think Microsoft has a lot of catching up to do if it could ever hope to overtake the smartphone market. That’s it, I hope this helps.

So far, so good...

I purchased this headset to use at the gym. My previous pair was POM 100 and they would slip out of my ear because they did not have the ear loops to hold them in place.
Let me say right of the bat, I'm not a sound expert. I'm the guy that can't tell the difference in the sound of a .wav file and a .mp3 file. But I can tell the difference between the sound of a record player, cassette player, and a CD.
Pros:
1. The sound. To me, these sound great and have much better bass than the POM 100.
2. Easy pairing. I've paired these to my phone and tablet without any issue.
3. Call sound. People sound clear to me and they say I sound good to them. Now, I wouldn't recommend using them all day for work and conference calls, but to grab a quick call at the Gym, they work great.
4. They stay in the ear when exercising. While using the elliptical and lifting weights, they have never come out.
5. Price. I'm a little biased here because I used a $30 in reward points and got these for $10. But still, $40 for these headsets is still pretty darn good.
6. I like the volume and play buttons right there on the ear. Yes it makes it a little heavier but I really do not like those buttons on the cable. I always have a hard time finding it and I'll press the play button instead of the volume up or down.
7. Now I know this is a small thing but it went up in cool points when I found this out... You see the little blue area on each side? Well, those are magnets, you can clip them together and they hold in place. So when you take them out of your ears, you can clasp the ends together and they won't slip off your neck. I thought that was pretty cool.
8. I sweat a bit in the gym but so far, no issues with that on the headset.
9. The ear loops! They make sure the stay in and on my ear.
Cons:
1. For extended use, I could see that they could feel a little heavy on your ears.
Not really sure about battery life as I usually charge them after every gym visit.
Overall, I'm really enjoying them and recommend them for purchase.

Great laptop for the price!
on June 9, 2015
Posted by: ideapad1
I was torn between this laptop and getting a Surface 3 Pro. I was coming off a Surface Pro 1, which I liked very much. I watched many comparison videos and read many reviews and I finally settled on the HP.
The reasons I chose this over the Surface:
1. First and foremost, the price. To get the Surface Pro 3, with the same specs, 8 GB RAM, 256 Storage, Keyboard, and docking station for additional ports, I would have had to speed $1900. Now, the keyboard doesn't detach and I'm also gaining a full pound in weight, but the screen is an inch larger. Also, with the money I saved I purchased a new 25 inch full HD HP monitor to use with the new laptop, and I still saved $300 over the price of the surface.
2. Larger screen. I know it's not much larger but it makes a difference when working for long periods of time.
3. More ports. 3 - usb 3 ports, HDMI out, Mini Display Out, expandable SD Storage.
4. Keyboard. I like the keyboard much better and it can be back lit.
5. Tent mode. I'm really liking this for watching Netflix, HBO GO, and TV.
6. Sound. It sounds much better than my Surface Pro 1 sounded. Not sure if it is better than the Surface Pro 3 for sound.
7. Boot time. It's around 10 seconds for a cold boot. Incredible.
How I use my computer...
I am a computer consultant that does database and programming work. I connect my laptop to a full size keyboard, mouse, and monitor for daily use and I take the laptop and work from it alone when traveling. The current work tools that I have installed and use the most are SQL Server 2012 developer edition, Office 2013, Visual Studio 2013, and Cisco VPN. All run quickly with no significant lag.
I occasionally use it for multimedia such as Netflix, HBO Go, and Dish Anywhere.
Additional Pros:
The look. It just looks sharp. All aluminum, no plastic makes this thing look sharp! Now, I'm not going to drop it just to test if it can handle a drop but I'm thinking the aluminum would do better than plastic on a drop test.
Weight: 3.3 lbs for a fully functional laptop.
Tent mode.
Cons:
The F5 key, which allows you to turn on the back lighting, stays lit at all times. Kind of annoying, but not a big deal.
Tablet mode. This works fine if you put it in your lap but it doesn't work so great if you are trying to hold it and use it in this mode. I feel it's a little to heavy.
Oh, I also wanted to mention, I saw a lot of comments where people are worried about the size of the trackpad, and wondering if it gets in the way. I was worried about this too. It really doesn't, at least not for me. I've had issues in the past with trackpads that were so sensitive, that I had to turn them off to get any work done. This one seems to be lowered just enough to not get in your way.
I hope this helps, I'm really happy with this unit. I even struggled with going with the 512GB hard drive and the quad HD display. I'm glad I didn't because I didn't really want to buy a Quad HD display monitory to connect and it makes things much easier. I use both screens at the same time. I keep email up on the laptop display and I mainly work of the attached monitor. Also, for me, space hasn't been an issue. A while back I purchased an HD MyCloud and I put all music, pictures, videos, etc. there. I store all my working files on a 64GB sd card.

Great Tablet

I have not been able to stop looking at this beautiful display! When reading reviews on Best Buy and Amazon, the most frequent question I see is "can this replace my laptop". This answer greatly depends on how you use your laptop. If you check emails, browse the internet, update you social networking information, then yes, I think this could replace your laptop. You'd need a good bluetooth keyboard and mouse. If you use Office applications, it does come with Hancom office which has you covered for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents. This is perfect for the high school or college student. The built in printing functionality makes it easy to print as well. If you need to store a lot of information, you can expand the memory with an sd card. I'd suggest getting a Samsung sd card. I had a SanDisk and I had some problems using it in this table. Also, you can take advantage of cloud storage (Google Drive, OneDrive, etc.) I've even been able to use remote desktop to get to my work servers and get some work done, although I mostly use my tablet for personal use. I did purchase the bluetooth keyboard/case and I'm typing this review using the tablet and keyboard. I was lucky enough to trade in an old beat up tablet and I got $100 toward the purchase of my Tab S! I've also used the screen mirroring functionality to connect my tablet to my smart tv and view videos from my tablet on my TV. There really isn't much you can't do with this device.
With 3gb or ram the device runs fast even though it contains a bunch of bloatware. I think after my warranty expires, I'm going to put cyanogenmod on here so I can get rid of all that bloatware.
Now for the cons:
Price! I think this tablet should be about $100 less. It is an awesome machine but for $500 for the tablet and $150 for the keyboard case, your at $650. For that, you could buy yourself a decent laptop.
Bloatware! Some of it you can "turn off" but others you can't. I use Microsoft OneNote I don't need Evernote. I should be able to uninstall that application, and others like it.
Can't save Hancom office files to the SD Card. This is not a issue with the tablet but with Google. In the KitKat release, android 4.4.2, applications are unable to access the sd card for storage. This is absolutely ridiculous. Again, this is a google restriction, not an issue with the tablet. At least you can save these files to cloud storage.
Overall, I'm super happy with this tablet. It's the best looking, fastest, thinnest tablet I've ever owned.

Solid Keyboard
on September 10, 2014
Posted by: ideapad1
from michigan
First off, this case looks fantastic. It matches the table perfectly and seems to protect it quite well. The keyboard is a little small and takes some getting used to but you can't expect a full size keyboard for a 10.5 inch table. Typing is very smooth and I there is really no delay when typing. In fact, I'm using it to type this review.
One important note I'd like to make...
When I first connected to the keyboard, it was absolutely killing my wifi connection. I have a dual channel router 5gz and 2.4gz and I had the tablet connecting to the 5gz network. Once I swithed the tablet over to the 2.4gz network, everything was fine. I'm not sure if this happens to everyone but I thought it was important to mention. This seemed very strange to me because I thought bluetooth operated on the 2.4gz frequency and that having the tablet on the network would cause issues but it seems to be the other way around, at least for me.
Now let me get to the negatives...
1. The price! I think it is ridiculous that this keyboard costs $149.99! The only reason I purchased it was that I had a $50 reward card when buying the tablet so it cost me $99. I think $99 is still a bit steep. This keyboard case should be around $50 - $75. I almost bought the Logitech keyboard/case because it was $100 but I really liked the look of this keyboard and the fact that it matches the tablet perfectly.
2. No charger! I actually thought i was suppose to come with a charger. In fact, I called Best Buy to verify. I even looked on some unboxing videos on YouTube. Sure enough, no charger. You just have to use the one that comes with your tablet.
3. No trackpad. I knew this going in but I wouldn't mind paying $149 for this thing if it had a mini track pad on it. Fortunately, I have a bluetooth mouse and it works great.
Overall this is a slick looking very function keyboard. If the price were a bit lower and it came with a charger, it would be an easy 5 star product.
I hope this helps.

Very Good Tablet
By ChrisPA
I was looking for a android tablet to replace my Ipad 4, as I got sick of apple and all of their nonsense. I have a stock android smart phone, and was looking at the nexus 9 as a good stock android tablet. However, the reviews of the nexus 9 were less than flattering, so I decided to look at the Tab S. After having a samsung phone previously, I was really not all that crazy about Touchwiz, actually I couldn't stand it. Then I heard about the Google Now Launcher, which will drop a lot of the touchwiz features and turn your tablet or phone into more of a stock android experience. Now I really took a closer look at the Tab S, as it was the most powerful android tablet on the market next to the nexus 9. After toying around with it at the store, I decided to purchase it. It has been fantastic. The screen resolution is great, the google now launcher works to perfection, so I get the stock android experience. I also turned off about a dozen or so Samsung bloatware apps. Now my menu tray is nice and barren excluding the google apps. Signing on to all my google accounts was easy, and having a android phone, all of my apps that I downloaded to my phone got downloaded to the Tab S. I would highly recommend this tablet if you are in the market for a fast, reliable device. I would also recommend you install the Google Now Launcher if you do not like Touchwiz. You will not be disappointed.

Windows 10 preview is now safe to load
August 4, 2015
On my original post, I said do not load the windows 10 preview on the phone. The latest update, 10166, works pretty well on this phone. It's still not as fast as Windows 8.1, but it is much better. I'm sure the official release will be even better than the preview.

Great laptop for the price!
By ideapad1

I can't load Windows 10 :-(
August 4, 2015
This is not a limitation of the laptop. There is a particular program that I need that is not compatible with Windows 10. I use Cisco VPN to get to my work machines and the program will not install on Windows 10. Again, this is not a limitation of the laptop.

Replaced my i7 Surface 16GB/256GB
By Windows8Nation from Washington DC
Inetially I was struck by its thinness and iPad like build quality. I actually hate, hate, hate the way the Surface feels in the hand. Given the fact that the Surface Keyboard is leaps and bounds better the the one on the TabPro S; I have learned to work with the TabPro S keyboard and I am just as efficient with it now as I ever was with the Surface. Lack of expandability; I have come to realize that with a little due diligence, I don't need any extra storage space if I deleted movies arter watching them. I have found that with a little house cleaning every month or so, I am actually left with storage space to spare. The screen is ridiculously gorgeous and now, because of the 10 hour battery, I can actually take my TabPro S with me for the day without needing to take the travel adapter as well ( Major consideration with the Surface given the size of its adapter). After all, what's the point of owning an ultra light 2n1 if you have to put in in a bag like a laptop because you need to take the adapter with you all of the time...
All in all, I have come to realize that buying what I need is much more prudent that buying the biggest and most powerful thing I can get my hands on. After all, isn't that what my home or work PC are for, all I need this thing for is to mark up documents, check email, surf the web and maybe movies/music on the commute. I can do light photo editing and all of MS office.. Its thiner than an ipad, its lighter, it looks so much better, it has a better screen, its battery blows everything else out of the water and it comes with the keyboard and a case. Did I mention that it looks so much sexier than everything else...Because it does. Now I can safely sell my Ipad Pro and my Surface...I didn't give it the extra star because I believe a usb3 port would have been more prudent. and because the keyboard is not as good as that on the Surface.

Question about battery life
June 30, 2016
I was wondering what you keep your screen brightness at to get 10 hours of battery life. I keep mine at 75% and I get about 5 hours.

Not as good as I hoped
By gizmojeff from Boise, Id
It's nice but not enough to replace a Surface. The pen is not yet available, the built in linking to a Samsung phone doesn't work very easy and is super cumbersome to use. The keyboard and trackpad not so great. Maybe it will improve overtime.

Beautiful hardware held back by software
By KMont1234
I’ve been using a Mac for the past 7 years. Before that, I was only using Windows. The transition from Windows to Mac was difficult, but a great one. I’m currently using the 12 in. MacBook, and although not a powerhouse, its portability is one of its strengths. When I was given the opportunity to try out the X2, I was excited to see what this new computer would offer, in regards to build quality and software. My review will be separated into two sections; the Hardware and the Software.
Hardware: 9/10
This is a beautiful machine. It is light, built with great materials, and quality is excellent. This device has two USB-C ports, which I am already used to on my MacBook. I think USB-C is the future so I welcome these on the X2. The screen is vivid, bright, and responsive. The included keyboard is also great. The backlight is a surprisingly nice addition on this 2-in-1. The speakers are fine, a bit tinny and not as loud as my MacBook. It says Bang & Olufsen, but it doesn’t make a difference. It comes with a stylus, which is very nice. It is light and uses a AAA battery. The fan noise is not that loud, but it is noticeable. The fan whirs even while the computer is plugged in and sleeping. Something that I think I will never get used to is the hinge. Just having to kick it out when I want to use it in laptop mode is an extra step. Although, I will say that the hinge is strong and sturdy. I’ve used this device with the keyboard attached on my bed and, for the most part, everything holds together. Overall, the build quality of the X2 is to be expected in a high priced 2-in-1 and it does a great job living up to those expectations.
Software: 6/10
I haven’t had a dedicated Windows machine in years, but I do run Windows 7 on BootCamp on an iMac, so I do understand how Windows works. Windows 10 is a completely different monster. Out of the box, set-up was nice and easy with Cortana to guide me along. After that, it was not a great experience. One of the biggest issues I’ve encountered is Time Sync. My time was not synced correctly, even after troubleshooting. For a new machine, I do not expect an issue immediately after set up. I’ve searched for a solution, but ended up setting the time manually. Tablet mode is a little glitchy and can slow down the entire OS. There are a lot of gestures that take time to learn and remember, but are useful when navigating. Windows Hello is nice for logging on (when it works) and start-up time from when the laptop is off is fast. Something that I miss though was having dedicated apps for word processing, presentations, and spreadsheets for free out of the box (iWork Suite). Overall, Windows 10 is decent, but filled with bugs and can sometimes be a bit overwhelming.
The HP X2 is an awesome machine for people who like portability and creatives who work with a stylus and touch screen, but it is held back by an OS that still needs some refinements and simplification.

Are there any tablets that you can connect a printer to

Connecting a printer directly to the device would require and additional USB C adapter which can be purchased separately. However, if you have a WiFi enabled printer in your house, you can print to it without a direct connection.
