I am continuously surprised how many folks don`t have this CD amongst thier Bette Midler collection. There are originals and covers. It was her first release since the soundtrack to "Beaches". Arranged and Conducted mostly in part by the extraordinary Marc Shaiman, Pianist. There wasn`t a song on this LP that I skip through to this day. Some of my favorites are the cover of Janis Ians "Some people`s Lives", Cole Porter`s "Miss Otis Regrets", "Spring can really hang you up the most" (two of which were stage adapted ofr her taping of "Diva Las Vegas" -1996), This CD contains the enduring & beloved hit song played during the Gulf War of 1991 on the radio as signature of the time "From a Distance". As was Oleta Adams` "Get Here". This is still a concert favorite Miss M performed in her stage tours from 1993 to Las Vegas during her 2009-11 show at Ceasars Palace. A track that has in the past decade become a dance mix "Moonlight Dancing". This LP was released at the tip of what is known in History as the "Plague Years". People who contracted and died senselessly from complications associated with AIDs. Anyone who is an Artist of prior to those years and during those years who displayed thier compassion has been embraced to this day through many loyal fans who are Gay. And clearly an edge in the market. Two significant bits of this LP is reflective of the impact AIDs had on many Bette Midler fans and personal friends. The recording of "He was too good to me/Since you stayed here". Which I have heard sung at many memorials after this release as much as "I`ll be seeing you". And the dedication of this LP to Miss Midlers friend Jerry Blatt who died of complications associated with AIDs. Jerry Blatt was instrumental in motivating and assisting "The Divine Miss M". This CD will always remain one of my top 3 favorites.
What's great about it: The originality of songs covered
Unlike "The Best Bette" and "Jackpot" (which, by the by, are excellent compilations of Bette Midlers` recordings during her career) this very tastefully packaged CD is a compilation of Love songs that Bette Midler has recorded on other LPs spanning her career. The CD is covered in a special packaging resembling the increbile cover and back photographs of Miss M for this CD. Which resembles her now. Inside the CD is a book filled with the list of each song, the LP it was taken from, the release date of the LP, and a comment written by Miss M of her memory during the recording or her reason for adding the track to the collection. This is the only CD that has Bette Midlers` words on individual recordings. I strongly suggest you pick up this CD, or two, because it will without a doubt be part of a small collectors edition of Miss Midlers work in the recording studio spanning forty plus years.
If you`re over 25 and familiar with what Rock Bands were and the incredible success and endurance of them (i.e., The Rolling Stones) this is a must have. Bette Midler went from the depths of Disco in 1979 ("Thighs and Whispers") to the depths of Rock `n Roll in her classic performance in her first film "The Rose". These tracks are all "Live" as recorded from the Motion Picture, "The Rose". Bette Midlers` classic Hollywood breakthrough starring and Oscar nominated role. The Hit songs from this CD (which have also become concert expectations in the past two decades of Miss M`s touring) include "When a Man Loves a Woman", "Stay with me Baby", and "The Rose". "The Rose" is the studio recorded version which plays during the credit rolls of this film. Nevertheless, I can listen to the entire CD and feel like a trip back in time. And enjoy it. Bette Midler changed her voice and charachter for this movie. It was a huge risk and it paid off. If you have never seen the movie I suggest you pick that up as well.
What's great about it: Bette Midler`s Rock Star capacity
