If you love old westerns and movie references you'll really enjoy "Rango". It is loaded with loving tributes to everything from 'High Noon" to "Apocalypse Now". You'll especially notice a homage to the plot of "Chinatown". It's just a lot of fun to watch several times to pick out and enjoy the references.
The animation is absolutely first rate, some of the best I've ever seen, with amazing details in both the foreground and background. Once again, it's worth watching over and over to pick out different details. Although I've only seen it in Blu-ray and cannot speak for the DVD version.
My one bit of advice though would be that even though it's an animated film it may not be as enjoyable for small children. It's a bit dark in tone at times, some of the characters are physically a bit scary looking, and the pace may seem slow to younger viewers. It's not Kung Fu Panda (which I also love) but it does reward young viewer patience with a terrific and funny performance by Johnny Depp as the title character.
What's great about it: Amazing animation, terrific and fun movie references, parodies, and homages throughout
What's not so great: Not necessarily a great film for very young viewers.
What can I say? This is my favorite movie of all time (I consider all three movies just one continuous story at this point). And the only way to really see it with the Extended Versions which bring so much more depth to the story, especially at the end of "Return of the King". We have watched our boxed set DVD versions of LOTR (Extended Versions) during "Hobbit Marathons" several times a year since they were first available. The DVD's are considered some of the best mastered for PQ & SQ available, reference quality. Was worried that I'd be a little disappointed that the Blu-ray versions wouldn't be a huge improvement. But so far have been very happy and pleased that the PQ & SQ are even sharper and more impressive than I had hoped. My only regret is that they weren't able to somehow upgrade all the excellent special features to HD also. But since I've already watched all of them on the DVD set anyway it's not that big a deal to me. This truly is the One Box Set To Rule Them All!
What's great about it: Everything!
What's not so great: Extra features not in HD, but most of us will have already seen them on the DVD set anyway.
