Best Game Capture Device
on May 18, 2013

I recently got fed up with my HD PVR 2 (check my almost horrible review for it) and began looking online for newer game capture devices to record some MInecraft videos on my Xbox 360. I had my mind set on the Roxio HD Pro but when I read that this device could record your voice live, I was highly intrigued. I had been recording my voice over Audacity which worked great but I had to have the HD PVR 2 software ready to record and also have the Audacity program open. I would then click record on the recording software that was included with the HD PVR 2 and wait a few seconds then hit record in Audacity. Later I would have to match up my voice to the video which was not necessarily difficult but, a cumbersome ordeal that should not have to occur. Basically, all you should have to do is hit a button and it should record your video and your live voice a the same time. A simple concept but, only prevalent in the Elgato. SOLD!
The Elgato is extremely easy to set up, with having an HDMI run into the input of the device and then running the output to your TV. A mini USB to USB cable runs from the device and then into an open USB port on your computer. That is it. The unit does not require an AC plug because the power runs from the USB cable from your computer to the device (so you would have to have your computer on, obviously). HD PVR 2 had several cables running about. I then downloaded the software as instructed and was recording in about 10 minutes. I found that the recording software is very basic but, that makes it really simple to use and there are links all over the interface that will teach you about how to use it if your interested.
It also has some other cool features like recording backup. Basically, if you made that one amazing move/headshot/achievement or something that you know you would never be able to pull off again no matter how hard you tried, you would be able to 'go back in time'/rewind to an earlier part that you weren't recording and begin recording. You'd never miss that one opportunity again! The interface is simple and clean and is easy to use because it makes sense. When you download and use it , you'll know what I'm talking about. The editing is very basic (chop and upload). Didn't matter for though, because if you're really serious about editing, you'll have a program like Sony Vegas.
Overall, if you're a serious game capture pro or if you're a first timer, you'll get the Elgato. Its simple, fast, easy, efficient, has the ability to record your voice while recording video, can live stream, and is also super compact for gamers on the go. If I would've known about this before that 'other' one, I wouldn't have had to waste my life away with frustration. If you're looking for consistency with awesome quality vids, buy this game capture device!
What's great about it: Absolutely EASY to use & output quality is great
What's not so great: Price was highest among the 3 main capture devices
I would recommend this to a friend!

Ok at first and downhill from there

Bought this to record some MInecraft videos and it was the only one that was sold in stores at the time. I didn't have anything else to compare it to before or after purchasing it. I was also extremely new to game capture and editing videos as well at the time.
After having used this not so amazing piece of hardware for a few months I got fed up. The biggest problem was during recording with my 360, my 58' plasma would go black and make some digital noise and the Arc Soft Software (included editing software) would disconnect the recording and I would have to start over. Today I was, 35 minutes into a tutorial and it happened. I rage quit and started looking online for other options. Before I get to that, there are a couple more key notes you should know before looking into this product.
When you're recording video you definitely want to do a live voice recording as well. This does not allow you to. You can voice over but not live record. That's ridiculous. I started using Audacity to record my voice and I would have to have the Arc Soft program open, ready to record and to also have Audacity open and then click record and wait to record on Audacity and then have to match up the voices in the editor. Seriously, that sucks. For being a first timer with this sort of thing, its a bit difficult to know what bit rates to use and what different formats you should use also. I published one vid that had amazing quality and another that had horrible quality. Plenty of self training is needed when you buy this thing. I'm good with it now but in the beginning is slow going. The included software isn't that bad in my opinion as I have now just started using Sony Vegas. Arc Soft is perfect for a beginner and average for someone with basic editing knowledge.
Set up wasn't all that bad, I did have to buy a 32' USB A cable to get across the room I'm in cause I don't have a laptop. I used the 2 HDMI that it came with which is why I actually chose the pvr. It came with everything you needed...which is too many cables! I realize that now. I never used the start/stop record button on top which I though was a good idea at first but just never had a need to use it like that. The lights on the unit are cool but now seem unnecessary.
For some I would say you may like this unit, cause you can record TV and all that but some programs like Netflix would not work with it. I didn't want to record TV or Netflix but I would have to unplug from the pvr if I wanted to watch Netflix through my Xbox. I get why but its just an overall hassle. For some though I could see this being a potential bell/whistle. And that's just it, seems that Hauppage tried to incorporate some things they thought would add better value to their system but when its put to the test it falls short.
If you're serious about recording, get the Elgato Game Capture HD. Super simple recording and get a decent video editor like Sony Vegas. I was recording in about 10 minutes with the Elgato...plus you can record live voice with it as well! Its as simple as hitting a button and you're recording video and voice. At least someone was thinking when they made their game capture device. Also, I uploaded two videos today with the Elgato and they have excellent quality and were extremely easy to publish without a single interruption the entire time I was recording.
If you don't have an extra $30 to get the Elgato, then you need to wait or ask your grandma for an early birthday gift....don't buy this unless you want to be interrupted to only to have to start over a 35 minute video. Nevermore Hauppage!

Simple overpriced great concept

This coffee maker is what it is...A single brew coffee maker. That's great so you aren't making more than is neccessary but you could also make about 2-3 cups worth as well in a regular coffee maker for a fraction of the cost, doing about the same thing if not better and more to your liking. I say this because most travel cups are approx 12-16 ounces. 8 oz = 1 cup. Now this unit only goes up to 9.25 oz (Says 10 oz on the specs) which is supposed to be a Large Cup/Mug. My 'at home' mugs only fill to a little more than 2/3 cup with the large mug setting. Also the other cup sizes state 6 oz (actual 5.25 oz) and 8 oz (actual 7.25 oz). So if you want to fill that 16 oz travel cup and you selected the medium mug setting to be paired with the small mug setting (7.25+5.25=12.5 oz...otherwise the other combos will overfill your 16 oz mug especially when you add cream/sugar), you have to lift the handle and drop it again (after you already brewed a first time) to reset the unit (so it thinks you dropped another k-cup inside) and rerun the brew cycle with the previously used k-cup. Consequences become: you ending up with a not so strong, filled to the top, cup of coffee. It is somewhat irritating at first due to the price. I could've bought the next model up, but an extra $30 did not make two extra cup sizes seem all that important while I could conduct some simple math when brewing. A smaller (4 oz) cup size and a larger (12 oz) is what's included in the next model upgrade. The instructions also clearly state that larger selected cup sizes will lessen the overall finished product's strength of flavor and suggests that you buy stronger flavored k-cups. So if I want my big cup of coffee I have to become resticted to what types I buy or i can double up on k-cups and get a really strong cup of joe for more money - not a great idea if you're trying to save a little money at least. You can also get hot water out of the machine by selecting a cup size and running the brew cycle w/out a k-cup inserted. Handy but more convenient with a 'Hot Water' button like the Cuisanart model. The bottom drip tray removes for larger travel mugs and the like but usless unless you want a weak cup of coffee. It has a temp control (+/-5 degrees) which is nice but I keep it at the hottest all the time. Digital pad is nice and easy to use. Set it up once and you're good to go. Looks real spiffy on my counter but my kitchen has real high-end stainless steel...everywhere. It is disappointing that for paying $150 it does not have more brushed steel or even chrome. Only the handle and the drip plate are chrome. The other components are gray/silver plastic. And there isn't much of it. The water tank is awesome cause it's not too big and not too small. I put filtered water from my fridge into a pure water filter pitcher and then into the water resovoir. Lastly, the one thing that'll get you consistently will be the over priced k-cups. There is an amazing variety but prices are not consumer friendly. I also purchased the reusable coffee filter (for your own coffee), a chrome k-cup carousel, and the refill pack for the unit's own filter. Overall, the Keurig coffee makers are such a simple concept that is overpriced but neccessary for an avid coffee drinker. The coffee is always fresh and there's awesome variety amongst the k-cup flavors. It's almost fun organizing k-cups on my chrome carosel and drinking the different flavors until you realize how much money you have already invested in a single brew system that doesn't quite meet all of your expectations. Most all problems I have listed could be solved by just making the 'right' amount of coffee in an inexpensive regular coffee maker. For some reason though, I still love my Keurig!
What's great about it: Fresh coffee for an avid coffee drinker
What's not so great: Large cup sizes means weak coffee

How Are Customers Reviewing Unreleased Games?
By MikeInSWFL from SWFL
How is it that a game that has not even reached the general public yet is getting reviewed by a customer? I'd advise against trusting any posted opinions presented until the game actually hits the market.

It's called a demo - you know...something you download for free to 'test' a game before you buy. Very simple concept...everyone's doing it except you
