Solid Webcam Upgrade
on November 13, 2022
Posted by: cjviscito
I was looking to upgrade my older Logitech C920 camera, but the Logitech Brio 4k webcam seemed like it was overkill for what I was looking for, so I was happy to see Logitech made the Brio 500. Out of the box, it's your basic plug and play webcam situation.
Something to be aware of is this webcam requires a USB-C port. My monitor has a built in USB hub that I plug all my accessories into so I can swap my personal and work laptop at my desk. So I resorted to using a USB-C to USB-A adapter because the monitor doesn't have a USB-C input port. It worked without a hitch and I was up and running in a few minutes.
The Brio 500 works for both Windows and Mac devices plug-&-play out of the box, but if you want some additional customization, you can download the Logi Tune software. This is how you manage firmware updates for the camera, in fact, there was one required out of the box as soon as I set it up. The Logi Tune software also allows you to customize color temperatures, zoom, etc. It did not allow me to adjust the frame rate. The camera is supposed to support 1080p at 30 FPS and 720p at 60 FPS, but there was no way to toggle that in the Tune app.
The Brio has 2 cool new hardware features that set it apart from my older C920. First, it has a built-in privacy shutter that you can open and close, which is a nice privacy / security feature. Also, the camera attaches to the base with a magnetic connection, so you can pivot the camera down to the desk. It plays a bit like what Apple described for their new Continuity Camera feature, so you can pivot the camera down to the desk, and the camera automatically rotates the image so you can share what's on your desk without it looking upside down to anyone you're sharing / broadcasting to.
There's also a built-in microphone, but I have a dedicated USB microphone that I use, so I can't speak to that. All in all, I really like the camera, the video quality is great for a webcam and is great for work Zoom calls as well as recording / streaming. Since most internet video is compressed in order to stream, the quality of 1080p video still looks great.

Compact and Comfortable
on November 5, 2022
Posted by: cjviscito
My old backpack that I used for many years finally gave up the ghost, so I was on the look out for another option that met the following criteria:
- Room for 14 / 16" laptop
- Room for iPad
- Comfortable to carry
- Travel Friendly
The Solo backpack checked all of those items for me. The bag itself is a pretty standard size, it's not overly large like some laptop bags are, but it's also got enough room to hold what I need it to hold. My work is bringing people back into the office in a hybrid setting, and we can't leave any items at our desks overnight - so we have to be able to pack in and out whatever we need for the day.
I was able to comfortably carry everything I need for my visits to the office. The straps and back of the backpack have some nice padding with cushioning to avoid feeling like the bag is weighing on you. There's also another nice feature in the back - there's a loop in the back so you can keep your backpack connected with luggage when you're traveling.
In terms of build quality, the bag feels nice and sturdy. The bottom of the bag has some kind of thicker material, not sure if it's denser fabric or thin leather, but it feels soft, but durable. There's also a "hidden" pocket in the back of the backpack for more sensitive items. I typically would carry things like my wallet or AirPods in that pocket when out and about.
The camo look isn't as drastic as the images make it out to be, you can really only see it if light hits it a certain way. Camo look really isn't my thing, but it's hardly noticeable. I've had coworkers ask me where I got the bag because it looks and feels as nice as a bag that costs considerably more.

Great Travel Buddy
on September 26, 2022
Posted by: cjviscito
With all of our Apple gadgets like iPads, iPhones, Apple Watches, and AirPods, it's a bit of a hassle trying to grab each power brick for each item. Then, when we get to where we're going, we have to hope there's enough open outlets for each device. But with everything going USB-C route now, I decided it was time to give up the USB-A ghost and update my cables and travel chargers. Since I'm starting to travel again for work, I wanted a device that could charge my iPad Pro, iPhone, Apple Watch, or AirPods and this device was perfect.
From a size perspective, it's not much different compared to the 10/12v power bricks that Apple used to include with their iPads, including the foldable power prongs - meaning you can fold the power prongs into the charger brick for travel and you don't have to worry about them bending.
So what I typically did was charge my iPad Pro during the day while I was at work and then would charge my Apple Watch and iPhone at night - and this thing worked flawlessly. It's not the strongest charger on the block by any means, but it works perfect for my use case. Another thing I look for with chargers is how hot they get and I was happy to see that I didn't feel any concerning amount of heat coming from the block while it was charging.
If you're looking for a great little travel buddy that can charge multiple devices over USB-C - then this is what you're looking for!

Powerful Sound Bar Package
on September 24, 2022
Posted by: cjviscito
Sony’s latest home theater sound bar, the A3000 comes in a nice package that allows for flexibility and customization. We had an older sound bar in our living room, but my wife said that it was easier to hear it when she was upstairs compared to when she was sitting on the couch in our living room. I’d tried all the tuning options, and then decided to punt and try the new A3000.
I found the sound bar to be a welcome replacement. In terms of what’s in the box, you get:
- A3000 sound bar
- Power / HDMI cables
- Remote w/ batteries
In terms of connectivity, the A3000 boasts:
- eARC HDMI input
- USB input for network devices
- AirPlay / Bluetooth for wireless audio
Since I wanted to be able to get the most out of the sound bar, I connected my LG OLED 4K tv to the A3000 using the eARC connection and the supplied, high-speed HDMI cable. I was really impressed by how well it sounded, even with watching something in Dolby ATMOS. I read up a bit about the device and learned the A3000 doesn’t actually have the dedicated speakers that fire upward for ATMOS audio - but rather creates a simulated ATMOS effect using software. Honestly, I could tell that it wasn’t as full sounding as my media room’s setup, but it was way better than the device we had in our living room previously.
Sony’s also taken a page from other higher end home theater setups by enabling you to purchase and link a dedicated sub woofer and rear speakers to create a full 5.1 surround sound setup. On its own, the A3000 produces really good sound, but if you’re wanting to get the most out of the unit, then I also recommend looking at the sub woofer and RS3S speaker set. It’ll be expensive to build out, but if you’re in the market and willing to invest, then it’s good to have options.
When I set the unit up, I went through everything, the A3000 also will auto-tune itself for the environment you place it in as part of the initial set up. Since I’m an iPhone user, I also took advantage of the Apple AirPlay set up route towards the end. This had the added benefit of having the A3000 appear as a speaker in AirPlay and my Home app - so I can group it with other AirPlay speakers throughout the house.
Between movies, TV shows, and music, the A3000 has done great with everything we’ve thrown at it. The only reason I haven’t rated it 5 stars is because of the price point. At $700, there are other Dolby ATMOS enabled speakers out there that are not as expensive. If you already have a Sony BRAVIA TV, then going with the A3000 is a no-brainer. But if you’re not invested in a Sony setup, then you might find more options out there that do everything the A3000 does at a lower price point.

Powerful Little Marshmello
on September 14, 2022
Posted by: cjviscito
My wife has been wanting a new air fryer for a while now. She went out and bought a pretty large one for her first air fryer, but she liked the features for the new Sensio Marshmello, so we picked it up to try it out. Overall, my wife really liked it, so much so that she rated it 5 stars, and she's a pretty tough critic for her small kitchen appliances.
She really liked the size. Even though it's still a 8qt air fryer, it's actually smaller than the older 8qt air fryer that she replaced with the Marshmello. Another feature she really liked is the Marshmello has a window in the front of the tray, so you can actually turn on a light and see what you're cooking, kinda like a regular oven.
Another feature she liked was the timer. On the older air fryer we had, you could only set the timer for 30 minutes max, but with the Marshmello, the timer goes up to an hour. So for recipes that call for longer cooking, she can set it and forget it. She also liked that the Marshmello comes with pre-programed options, but also has the capability for custom made presets. For her, that was huge because when she's trying a recipe out for the first time, she usually goes by the book, but once she's had a chance to try it out, she'll want to customize how she prepares things. So the built in pre-sets were nice, but so was the ability to add our own.
The only real draw back that she pointed out, but not enough of one to cause her to rate it lower, is that the power cord for the unit is on the shorter side, so it'll need to be pretty close to the power outlet. Our kitchen island is fairly large and has power outlets on both sides, so it wasn't really a concern for her, just something she noticed.
Her first cooking experiment was her classic baked potato and baked sweet potato. She was so happy because they turned out perfect, light and crunchy on the outside but softer and perfect in the middle.
All in all, she's happy with this and I can't wait for her to try making her famous hot wings in this thing!

Great for Pet Owners
on September 9, 2022
Posted by: cjviscito
I have a dog and a cat. They both shed quite a lot. The dog also occasionally goes to doggy day care and comes home wet and smelly, so when he sheds, the hair also has the stinky smell to it. We also have Ruggable rugs throughout the house and Mose stick vacuums are too strong and the beater bar ends up getting stuck on the rugs.
I was happy to see that the new Shark cordless pro vacuum perfectly works for my 2 key uses cases. I'm able to get all the pet hair off the floor and rugs without the beater bar getting stuck as well as the vacuum's exhaust not making the house smell like smelly dog.
The first thing I noticed about the new vacuum was the beater bar. Unlike most beater bars I've seen in vacuums that have the traditional bar with bristles, the Shark Pro's beater bar looks like it's been designed for most hard surfaces like tile or wood, with lighter bristles around it for getting stuff off of rugs and on the top of the carpet.
Another thing I appreciate about the design of this is how strong and stout the neck is. I've had cordless vacuums in the past where the head was large, the neck was tiny, and the handle / battery / waste bin part was massive, so the thing couldn't stay upright on it's own when stored unless it was leaning on something. The Shark Pro can stand up on its own, owning to the more compact handle / dust bin section coupled with a stronger, thicker neck.
The vacuum itself offers several modes for cleaning:
- Eco Mode, lower power / suction and longer run time
- Clean Sense, adjusts power / suction based on the soil level it detects
- Max, higher power / suction and shorter run time
I've primarily used it on Eco mode because it's perfect for getting pet hair, dust, and other light debris off our hardwood and tile floors. I can zip all over the downstairs of our house and the battery is still almost totally charged. I have tried the Clean Sense mode to see how it responds, and I've also tried the max mode - but like I said, I usually leave it on Eco mode.
Another nice feature of the Pro is the odor elimination provided by a pod you plug into the vacuum's head that is adjustable. So if you're dealing with something that smells really bad, like say - a dog who played in a pool and now starts to smell like cheese as he dries and sheds, the adjustable nature of the odor elimination pod is nice. I've left it at the lowest setting and that's worked fine, but I'm also trying to make sure I get the most out of it.
All in all, I'm really happy with this vacuum from Shark.

Solid Home Security System Setup
on September 6, 2022
Posted by: cjviscito
I've been a happy Simplisafe customer since the first version but have always regretted not jumping on the camera integrations they offered because we had another wireless camera setup. However, the opportunity arouse to replace those cameras, so I jumped at the change to replace my other, older cameras with newer ones from Simplisafe that integrate with our home security system.
This particular kit comes with:
- Base Station
- Keypad
- 2 outdoor wireless, battery-powered cameras
- 1 indoor wireless, plug-in-powered camera
- 6 door / window sensors
- 1 motion sensor
If you've ever set up a Simplisafe system before, then you know how quick it is to get them up and running. The main appeal of a Simplisafe system is that you can add additional components to fit your specific need and there's no long-term contracts to sign or installations to schedule.
Out of the box, I had the base station, keypad, and indoor camera up and running in less than 30 minutes. The image quality on the cameras is great. The indoor camera's streaming quality is great, but my only gripe is that it has to be plugged in in order to work. That means that if there's a power outage, your video feed will go down.
Part of the initial appeal in a Simplisafe system is that if your power, or WiFi goes down, the base station will revert to battery / cellular service to retain functionality. But because the indoor camera has to be plugged in, your video feed will go down. This is the main reason why I took a star off my review.
The outside cameras are great as well, we placed on in our back patio and the other on the side of our house by the back gate. We also placed the 6 sensors on our lower floor windows and doors.
The Simplisafe monitoring service does have a cost though, it's about $25 a month and provides 24/7 monitoring service. I believe that plan is required for the cameras though, since that plan is required for their mobile app to work and you need the app to set up the cameras... but it might be worth confirming with Simplisafe first.
My only other gripe is that Simplisafe does not work out of the box with Apple HomeKit. Simplisafe said a few years ago that HomeKit support was coming, but there's been nothing since. Since HomeKit is our primary smart home setup, this leaves Simplisafe on an island unless you setup a HomeBridge that enables unofficial HomeKit support for devices.
If you're looking for a simple, easy to setup and maintain home security system, then I highly recommend checking out the various packages from Simplisafe. Even if you don't find a package that fits you 100% out of the box, remember you can always add additional pieces as needed.

Great controller, Meh software
on August 29, 2022
Posted by: cjviscito
This was too cool to pass up - I mean, come on turning my phone into a PS5 remote play controller?! I have an iPhone 12 Pro that work issued me, so I fired up my personal iPhone XS and used it in the controller. Overall, it's a great controller experience, but it's hampered by the BackBone software.
Out of the box, you basically get the controller and an adapter for fitting the newer iPhone 13's. First thing you should know is that this won't work with any kind of case, slim or otherwise, if it adds depth to the edges of the phone. BackBone made this thing to fit a phone snugly, so no cases. Their website even says that cases won't work and they believe people will pop their phones out of the case to use their controller.
A nice feature of the controller is that it doesn't need to be charged - it runs off the phone's battery when connected. There's also a lightning port on the right control stock which enables pass thru charging. I've played games on it and then plugged it in to charge overnight by going through the BackBone's port. The other stock has a 3.5 headphone jack. I haven't tested the lightning port to see if it works with the newer lightning wired earbuds.
The overall build and style of the controller is very nice - it does feel like you're holding a smaller version of a PS4 / PS5 controller. I've tested the controller with the following services and it's worked great:
- PS5 Remote Play
- Steam Remote Play
- Apple Arcade (Castlevania Grimoire of Souls)
I was honestly not really impressed with the lag of remote playing my PS5 or Steam games on my older iPhone XS. It could be a limitation of that older phone, but even on a mesh WiFi network with my PS5 and laptop running an ethernet connection, there was really bad delays, pixelations, and overall lag. Plus, it just feels odd to be playing a PS5 game remotely on this thing when it fires up my PS5 and big screen TV to engage remote play - if I'm going to play a game, I might as well play it on the big screen. But that's not who BackBone's targeting with this thing.
BackBone is targeting people who want to engage in a community and live stream their playing from this device. As a grown adult who doesn't play a lot, if any, online games these features are nice, but not really interesting for me. Plus, it also really irks me that BackBone essentially gates almost all of the app's functionality behind a paywall. That's right, after buying this thing, you have to sign up for an annual subscription to access anything other than basic functionality on the controller.
That was a deal breaker for me. As much as I like the controller, and have fun playing Apple Arcade games with it, I just don't see much use for it other than a novelty item. I keep my phones in cases, I play my PS5 on my big screen and there's no lag. If BackBone really wanted to make this product work for me, they would've opened up more functionality in their companion app... or been more clear about what I would get for my $100 annual subscription. The controller does come with a free year of the service, but I was so disenchanted with it, that I never even activated it.

Great PS5 Headset
on August 10, 2022
Posted by: cjviscito
I picked these up to try out with my PS5 to play games at night after my kids have gone to sleep. Our upstairs media room is not too far away from the kids's bedrooms and my wife required a headset for late night gaming now that school has started up again.
Although I typically tend towards wireless headsets, I do like wired ones for gaming because there's no lag or loss. I've tried another wireless BT headset for my PS5, but it required an additional dongle to work since Sony is apparently pretty stingy with allowing BT devices to connect. At least with these, I can plug the line right into the controller.
Because they're wired, they're actually lighter in terms of weight than my other BT headset is - which means I can play longer without feeling the weight of the headset's band on the top of my head. There's a volume control rocker on the left headphone, it came out of the box cranked all the way up. Now, I'm not sure if it's because I'm getting older or what, but I leave it cranked all the way up and the sound that I get is really impressive.
I've tested them out with Doom Eternal and Bloodborne on my PS5 and the amount of ambient background noise, sound effects, and music that I was missing before is really impressive. I pretty much use these now all the time when I play my PS5 because it has the added benefit of not being able to hear when my wife yells at me to get off the PS5.
There's also a USB adapter that comes with it if you want to use this with a PC, or use the Sony INZONE app. I personally can't speak to this since I have another headset for PC gaming and I picked these up purely to try them out with my PS5. I also can't really speak to the mic's quality since I don't really play any online games. With a teenager already living under my roof, there's enough snark and trash talk going on here, I don't need to experience it online as well.
Bottom line, at $100 these are a nice addition to my PS5 setup. Because there's no battery or nonsense to mess with, I feel like these will last much longer, hurt my head less, and let me game more.

Fun for Kids and Adults
on August 4, 2022
Posted by: cjviscito
So full disclosure, I initially picked this up for my youngest daughter who wanted a hover board. My oldest has one, but my youngest was too nervous to try out the hover board on its own, so I thought a go kart type setup would work best for her.
Long story short, I think I've ridden this more than she has because it's just fun.
The nice thing about the kit is that it comes with everything you need in a single, well packaged box. Also, some of the assembly was already done regarding the handles and the brackets.
The challenge in putting this thing together was mostly due to trying to get the straps to connect without the handles rolling with the hover board. The brackets at the bottom of the arms actually rest on top of the hover board and use velcro straps to go underneath the hover board and secure it. I was a bit worried that the straps wouldn't be strong enough, but even after repeated rides, they were sill holding strong.
The go kart assembly is made of solid metal and feels really sturdy. Another nice feature of this is that you can use the go kart piece with other hover boards. So when we were charging the Hover-1 board up, we were able to also use this on my eldest daughter's hover board in the meantime.
The hover board itself is well built and pretty solid. The board itself has an estimated max distance of 6 miles on a single charge and, I believe, can go about 6-7mph at top speed. Honestly, when you're sitting on this and riding, it feels like you're going much faster, but that's part of the fun. I can say that I haven't tried to max out the battery distance, mainly because I don't want to walk 6 miles home trying to carry this thing.
The go kart itself also has a max weight of, I believe, 250 pounds... so being about 190 pounds myself, I felt comfortable riding this. My kids and I have enjoyed zipping around the neighborhood on this thing and our neighbor's kids have also ridden as well.

Use the Google Smart Light Starter Kit to control the lights using just your voice. Set up in a snap: just plug in Google Home Mini, screw in the GE C-Life smart light bulb, and download the Google Home app to get started. Then just say "Hey Google" to dim, brighten, turn on and turn off the lights."

Is the bulb soft/warm white or bright/daylight white?

Will this system be compatible with Amazons Echo? Or Google Home?

Hey Brie - they've announced plans to integrate with Alexa this year. They've also made comments that they're looking into other systems such as HomeKit and Google Home, but nothing committed at this point other than Alexa.

The Shark ION Robot is designed with a Tri-Brush System, combining side brushes, channel brushes, and a multi-surface brushroll to handle debris on all surfaces, corners, and edges. Use the SharkClean app or voice control with Alexa or Google Assistant to start cleaning from anywhere Shark ION Robot.

We have thick pads under our area rugs, will the ION-Robot be able to get over the height of the area rugs? We have several of them throughout the house. We bought a RUMBA and it was not able to get over them.

My 750 went into our bedroom which is carpeted with a thick pad and it didn't miss a beat - went right on in and cleaned away.
