Director John Boorman (Deliverance, Point Blank, Hope and Glory) examines his own Shangri-La in this highly unusual cult film. The disc presents it in widescreen anamorphic (aspect ratio of 2.35:1) with audio choices of English in Dolby Digital 3.0 and French in Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono. Unfortunately, for some scenes a slight tunneling effect can be heard. There are subtitles in English and Spanish. The film was shot by cinematographer Geoffrey Unsworth (Cabaret, 2001: A Space Odyssey), who perfected a technique that was intentionally soft; thus the images shouldn't be confused with the traits of a faulty digital transfer. That said, the transfer isn't perfect by any means, but it is quite presentable. One of the special features of the disc is a screen-specific audio commentary by the director. Though there are many pauses and it is not truly "screen-specific," Boorman does offer many insights, including the admission that perhaps the film suffers from having too many ideas. Also included is a theatrical trailer of the film, as well as trailers for Alien Nation, Aliens, Enemy Mine, Independence Day, and The Abyss. A "Still Gallery" has nine production photos and concept art pieces, ten lobby cards and publicity photos, and five images of one sheets and press books. The disc is rounded off by six radio spots. All in all, this is a solid presentation of this science fiction oddity.

Dated but of interest

This is definitely a dated, "mod" movie. Like most period, or sci-fi movies, it can't help but retain tons of giveaways to the contemporary time in which it was made. I guess that's a bit of the fun of this production. The story can be a bit, well, much. If you keep an open mind, like Sean Connery and like the 70's you'll have a goodtime with this one. If you don't like any of the above, please don't get it because you'll most likely be disappointed.

French director François Ozon's deliberate thriller arrives on DVD in exclusive "Unrated" form thanks to the fine efforts of the folks at Universal Studios. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, the image is virtually flawless. Well-balanced colors, even skin tones, and solid blacks highlight a transfer that was obviously taken from a pristine print of the film. Audio is presented in both English and French Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, with an English DTS track also available. Though the dialogue-driven film certainly isn't one to give the top-shelf home audio system a workout, it is clear and free of any audible distortion. In addition to English closed-captioning, optional French and Spanish subtitles are also available. While fans of the film may be excited to notice the inclusion of deleted scenes, most of those included are fairly incidental and mainly feature star Charlotte Rampling walking deliberately through an unfamiliar French countryside. A theatrical trailer rounds out the extras.

Charlotte Rampling

I had been seeing this movie heavily promoted so I thought I'd give it a go. I had also recently purchased the 70's sci-fi DVD "Zardoz" and was curious how Charlotte Rampling was looking these days. When purchasing I had read a few of the other reviews commenting that the movie moved slow? I wouldn't call it slow because the story has it's own pace. The pace moves along for what it's meant to be; a bit of a mind game. I read one review saying the ending was predictable. I can't agree with that because I was left wondering what had happened throughout the course of the story. Were all my questions answered by the time the credits started? No freakin' way but that's OK. I figured out a couple of my own possible conclusions for the tale woven by the storytellers. The bottom-line is I didn't feel cheated but if you need a finite ending this movie might leave you hanging.
And, Ms. Rampling? She's still got that SOMETHING about her that isn't necessarily sexy but oh, so striking!

Mississippi Masala is a tale of how prejudice makes victims and instigators of us all. In 1972, Indian Jay (Roshan Seth), a resident of Uganda, is forced by the bigoted Amin regime to take his family and flee the country. He vows to hate and distrust all blacks--at least until he is able to reclaim the real estate stolen from him by the Ugandan government. Flash-forward to 1990: Jay and his family have settled in Mississippi. Seth's daughter Mina (Sarit Choudhury) makes the acquaintance of African-American Demetrius (Denzel Washington), the prosperous manager of a carpet-cleaning business. At first attracted to Mina because he is fascinated by her African background, Demetrius slowly falls in love with her. The situation causes Jay to exercise the same racial prejudice by which he was himself victimized. Ironically, Demetrius behaves just as foolishly, blaming Jay's ethnic chauvinism for a drop in his business. Both Jay and Demetrius must learn to bury their pasts and their prejudices to go on with their lives.

A couple of shades can make a difference

This is an amazing movie and one I'm happy to have in my collection. The story is definitely not face-paced but has fine detail throughout. You get a feel for the diverse characters that inhabit this story involving: two continents, four cultures and the subtlety of various shades of skin tones. The love story is good but is enhanced by the subplot involving an East Indian's family exodus from their home in Africa. I guess you'd call it a drama? Hey, I don't know but there are multiple opportunities to share the characters' moments of irony, comedy and yes, love.
The real lesson here is- aren't we all just a couple of shades away from being labeled, defined or characterized by someone else's reality? You might be surprised what label has been attached to you!

I was fooled into thinking this was a comedy based on the preview trailer but it is a load of self-absorbed tripe. I believe there are moments the filmmakers try and provide some enlightenment to this dull plot. You wait anxiously only to be left confused as to why you're still watching this "death on a disc" film. Inside joke? Maybe, but it doesn't fly. Even as a dark comedy this movie leaves you wanting to put an arrow through your OWN head.
Depressing films aren't always my cup of tea. When I do watch something that contains this much despair I would like to be rewarded in some small way. Not with this fogged-in looser. Give me Nicolas Cage in "Leaving Las Vegas" any day before I would sit through this horror again. "Vegas" IS depressing but it is also GOOD. There is some meaning to the misery and a a decent performance by Mr. Cage. What's with Michael Caine? I know he's had a history of being in some oddball pix but this looks like an easy paycheck or a delusional exercise. Did he REALLY believe there was something worthwhile in completing this melancholy monstrosity?!?!?!?

A retired dancer (Patrick Swayze) and his two former partners must put aside their differences and resurrect the performance that previously ended their careers in this cinematic labor of love from dancer-turned-director Lisa Neimi and husband Swayze. Following the death of its longtime owner, the renowned New York dance studio of Alex McGrath is about to close its doors for good. Though it's been years since embittered dancer Travis has performed professionally, the prospect of his old haunt falling prey to the wrecking ball is simply too much to take. Reaching out to old dance partners Chrissa (Neimi) and Max (George de la Pena) in a last-ditch effort to save their mentor's studio, the trio decide to stage a performance of the very show that drove them apart nearly a decade ago.

I give it 2 stars for it's unintended comedy

Thank goodness my wife and I rented this movie because it is a one-viewing-only experience. We are introduced to Patrick Swayze's character and he seems the country hayseed who just got off the train from Booniesville. Later, we learn he's been "all over the world". Then we have to endure watching Lisa Neimi having, or reliving, her repeated emotional breakdowns. Boo hoo. Oh, don't forget George De La Pena. One minute he's prodding the two former lovers, (Swayze and Neimi), into dancing the production they've all reunited to do. The next he's crying at his makeup table because he never believed he, himself, could complete the darn task. Oh please!!! The story is so full of drama queens it's beyond belief!!! I have to admit that my wife and I spent most of the movie chuckling at the acting, the story and finally the lover's dance sequences. My major complaint was we hardly got to see these "great dancers" dance. There were plenty of waist up shots of the pair emoting their polarizing love/hate feelings. Demonstrations of their dance skill? It seemed to be a case of hiding their weaknesses. And, then there's Neimi's fatherless daughter. It wasn't too hard to figure out who's daddy. This plotline is so tired and comes at you thousands of miles before it's revealed. No surprise here.
Now let's be real. The threesome, who are supposed to be saving this dance company with their performance, were all pushing their mid 40's when we see the flashbacks of seven years prior!!! Now the movie is trying to convince us that not one, but three people are going to beat the odds, and are expected to perform like the kiddies?!?!? As I said, we had to hold back the giggles.
Three things of note should be added here:
1. Watch the extra feature on this DVD. Neimi and Swayze, (real life husband and wife), show SO MUCH more of an emotional connection there than they ever could muster for the movie's performance. When not of the wooden variety, their emotional range swung to a stupefying over acting. Again, boo-hoo.
2. The movie's lighting director and photographer should have been fired on the spot. Miss Neimi looks quite ancient and Swayze looks like his face is plastic. During one scene Patrick wants to practice a jump-catch!!! We cringed because it was like telling us our grandma was going to make the same attempt. We were convinced if Lisa fell it would be the preverbal "old woman" breaking her hip. Again, refer to the extra features. They look quite pleasant and Neimi looks like she may even be able to pull this wishing well story off.
3. Lastly, I would say the sequences with the other dancers gathered for this movie were very good. They were quite entertaining to watch and were performed with inventive choreography. Three cheers for the understudies!!! Hurrah, Hurrah, Hurrah!!!
I have mixed emotions about this film. On one hand I like to root for the "old-timer" who makes good. On the other, it is tremendously embarrassing watching "old people" look foolish. Unfortunately my rooting turned to laughing in disbelief. Rent, don't buy, this movie as ironic camp and for the intermittent supporting dancers' sequences.

This movie is just too cool!!! I can watch it over-and-over again because of the great cast and fun storyline. Is it dated? Oh, brother, is it!!! Is it goofy? Oh yeah, it is!!! Is it fun? By a boat load it's FUN!!! This film is forever trapped in its time but what a fantastic nugget of colorful late sixties optimism. Be sure and check out the music too. It's really a good time; although badly lipsynched. That's just adds to all the wacky, boisterous, frivolity of this great romp.
I bought this movie as a Christmas gift. It's fantastic to watch with a cold winter chill blasting the windows of a snow-trapped home. Oh, it's no shotgun wedding affair. More of a, "let's get the family together", kind of movie. The oldsters can remember it from their childhood, the kids can laugh at the wild fashion, (which keeps coming back), and everyone has a merry time.
I simply must point out the onscreen chemistry between dear Tony Randall and Janet Leigh. Who would have thought?!?!? They've got that special "something", which as an adult watching it now, I didn't notice as a kid. Back then I was too busy enjoying the animals, the scuba diving, the underwater house, the band and those too-hip-to-be-hip clothes.
Now, you rate this movie for what it is . . . pure family, (anybody really), entertainment. For that you can't beat this film!!! Rush out and get it for your whole gang today, man!!!

F Troop's arrival on DVD with a complete first-season package on six discs is a bit unexpected -- after all, the series, a Western parody that helped mark the end of a cycle of television oaters that began a decade earlier with Gunsmoke, only ran for two seasons. But it has done well in syndication across the decades and made an impression on popular culture, sufficient to leave phrases from its scripts ("It is balloon!") in the collective unconscious. And it is still funny, in large measure, owing to the presence of Forrest Tucker, Larry Storch, Frank DeKova, James Hampton, and Ken Berry. There's also a cheerful innocence about the series when seen today, and pre-politically correct humor in connection with popular notions of the Old West. The show looks and sounds sensational in these transfers. The contrasts are rich and the details are amazing, right down to the fabric in the uniforms of the troopers. The episodes get no chapter breakdowns, but the plotting is so brisk and straightforward that little is needed in the way of outlining. Each of the six platters opens automatically on a simple, easy-to-use menu that advances automatically as each episode concludes, and also includes a "play all" option. The volume is nice and loud and the audio is so clean that the lyrics to the opening theme -- which explain how Wilton Parmenter (Ken Berry) went from private to captain and was given command of Fort Courage -- are even easier to understand than they were originally. The presence of such guest stars as Jack Elam, George Gobel (whose guest appearance is probably the best of the season and the second best in the run of the series, only slightly less entertaining than Lew Parker's episode in a second-season episode), Henry Gibson, and Edward Everett Horton only adds to the appeal of this season of the show.

Don't rush this "fine wine" of whimsy!!!

Here's a wonderful gift idea. Buy this DVD set as, (I hate to call it), "filler", between your usual movie watching. This is a great warm-up to an evening of DVD viewing or a nice night-cap to end your day. I will also add here that I've only gotten through half of this DVD set as I write this commentary.
The first few disk are very good. We get a nice setup of the coming stories and the characters are firmly established in this whimsical comedy. Actor, Ken Berry, delivers his hokey physical gags, Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch are the goofy comedic team and the supporting oddball cast quite nicely round out these zany adventures. The black and white format adds to the "old-time" feel of the western time period. It's like looking through a demented old stereoscope image from the 1800's. I'm sure there will be some who are offended by the portrayal of the Native Americans in this show. "F-Troop" could never be made today because of all the politically-correct fascists among us. But, hey, as a product of the 60's I don't think it colored me with any particular negative view of anybody. Actually it showed me how we all have a comic bent to each individual. Melody Patterson's portrayal of Wrangler Jane is an example of a spunky little scamp who hangs with the best of the boys; especially her beloved Captain of the fort, Wilton Parmenter. There, at least everybody won't be offended. :-)
Here's where I see a problem ahead. I'm just at the halfway point of the set and I'm starting to see some obvious repeats of storylines. This is uncomplicated stuff. I'm not expecting high-brow intellect, but I have to wonder if this would become annoying on long sits through episodes? Right now I'm good but as I mentioned before, I'm not watching a ton of episodes one right after another.
As a DVD buy I think it's worth the money, especially if you can get it on sale as I did. What do the future disks hold, or for that matter, season two? Hey, I don't know but it's not hard to guess. More zany adventures!!! Right?!?! I'd advise you take your time with this set and enjoy the many little gems of comedy generously dispensed in each show. Don't rush this "fine wine" of whimsy but savor each sip of this 40 year old vintage. As stated and as rated, I say it's four stars.

Tommy is the MAN!!!

As a "hired gun" for the James Gang, and later Deep Purple, Bolin did a admirable job of fitting into those bands' confines. In my humble opinion, he made Deep Purple have a funkiness they never could have achieved without Bolin's influence. Love the funky influence, or hate it, Tommy could grunt out some bump with his rock and roll. That's what makes his solo albums so great. His all-inclusive palette is what let him hang with jazz cats, (Billy Cobham, Alphonse Mouzon, Lee Ritenour and Jan Hammer), on those fusion albums.
I like Tommy's solo albums because they take all that energy and focus it into some definitive rock music. I proudly own a copy of this album and can't say enough about the guitar work, the rhythms and the sweet, straightforward, vocal delivery you get on this set of songs.

Best guitar songs and compositions . . . EVER!!!

Veteran's Auditorium in Des Moines, Iowa, 1982. Gallagher opened for Rush. Rory came out and with his shear energy and frenzied performance brought the house down!!! The day after the show I could hardly wait to get to a, (yeah, I show my age), record store and find those amazing songs: "Shin Kicker", "Brute Force and Ignorance", "Cloak and Dagger", " Mississippi Sheiks" and please don't forget, "Shadow Play". Those songs stuck out like a gold vein in the side of a mountain. Simply some of the greatest rock songs I've EVER heard!!! I bought the album and couldn't wait for the CD. Frankly, I could do without the extra tunes on any of the Rory Gallagher reissues. The extended liner notes are great but you can't improve, on what I believe to be, one of the best collections of guitar rockers committed to disk-whether it be vinyl or plastic!!!
Do yourself a favor and purchase this disk of doozies. I wish this Irish-rocker was still around to blow Rush off the stage again. (Hey, I like old Rush so don't hate me too bad.) Sadly, we lost this wonderful gentleman of Rock `n' Roll back in 1995.

For a non-anamorphic picture (widescreen letterbox, 1.85:1 aspect ratio), the picture quality of Office Space is fairly sharp and smooth with rather detailed-looking events, faces, and scenes. Audio options on this single-layered DVD include English Dolby Digital 5.1, English Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround, and French Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround, with optional subtitles available in English and Spanish. Closed-captioning is also included. Bonus or special features are not, however, except for the original theatrical trailers. The sound quality comes through as mono sounding and front-directed, with overly loud dialogue in places throughout the film; coloring is a bit splotchy and inconsistent in some scenes.

It's hard to cheer for a LOSER!!!

First things first. Don't rent, (and certainly don't buy), this movie if you like your job. The humor will totally be lost on you. Second. There are probably better examples of the , "I hate my job", movie out there to be enjoyed. Take some time out of your boring day at work and find `em.
My wife got this for me because my job currently sucks BIG TIME so I got a vicarious thrill out of the conclusion. Even with that haze of sarcasm blurring my vision I must admit that the characters left me not really caring for ANY of them. They are rather cartoonish. Sorry Mike Judge, stick with the animation. It suits you better. The perplexing part of the plot is the main character's dream is to not have work, yet he keeps showing up there!!! It kind of makes you think this guy REALLY doesn't have a life beyond his dreary job. In other words, why would we care for a "hero" who is this much of a loser?!?!? This is where, for even the vicarious viewer, it gets stupid. If you hate your job, and don't want to go- (and the plot line says our man is hypnotized to be free of any employment worries)- why the heck do you keep coming back to this mundane garbage hole of place?!?!? I just want to smack this shmoe and tell him to actually start looking for a life.
If you really want the deeper meaning to this movie it's that in so many businesses it tanks. America won't be beaten from other countries' ingenuity but rather its own internal stupidity. If you give people their freedom and independence they cling to the safe, secure and complacent places they feel comfortable existing. Outwardly they revel in their fantasy of being cowboys roaming the range; tough-minded mavericks who can take on any challenge. But really, where is the true independent, self-reliant, rebel in this movie, (or today's world)? If this guy was from the America of old, he would have blazed new trails, explored new things or at least set an example of living his OWN life. Instead he haunts the boring existence he wishes to be free of! Go figure?!?!?!? We are left with a movie that shows how many people are reflected: scared, child-like and needing a paternal figure to guide their lives. But, I diverse. The movie deserves, a barely there, two stars if you hate your job. Otherwise it goes home with a single star.
What's great about it: Great start
What's not so great: Loser ending
