Plain Old Fun.

This is a funny film that can be enjoyed with the family. Jack Black is hysterical in the main role, doing a great job as he did in School of Rock. This is a memorable performance and trust me, you'll be quoting this film after you watch it.

Universal's exquisitely-presented DVD of Steven Soderbergh's box-office and critical hit Erin Brockovich is sure to delight fans of the film, while drawing new ones in equal measure. The picture and audio transfers are fairly run of the mill, presenting the film in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound. The real meat and potatoes of this DVD, however, are the extras. Universal includes its usual "Spotlight on Location" documentary, which highlights the making of the film and includes interviews with the cast and crew. There is also a three-minute segment on the real Erin Brockovich, which details her experiences battling the lawyers of Pacific Gas and Electric. A true standout is the 30-minute reel of deleted scenes. Available with or without commentary from Soderbergh, these scenes add a great deal of texture to the movie, and leave the viewer wondering why they were cut at all. Erin Brockovich was one of the most acclaimed films of 2000, and this DVD does it justice.

Great job, Julia! This film is great because of Julia Roberts' performance and it's a great emotional film that has a strong female lead. This was an interesting and gripping film and whenever it's on TV I always watch it. This isn't a movie to miss.

This is a great film overall; it has action, drama, romance, and a message. The films message is about diamonds and the genocide that goes on in some countries in Africa, because of the rock. DeCaprio delivers a great and powerful performance and this isn't a movie to miss.

One of the most highly regarded films of 2002, About Schmidt gets the shaft on DVD, and only New Line or director Alexander Payne knows exactly why. Supplements are minimal and only include a few deleted scenes with a text introduction from Payne; an amusing version of the opening shots of the Woodmen Building, again with a text introduction; and the theatrical trailer. One can only wonder why Final Destination 2 receives the "Platinum Series" treatment, but not this film. As for the image, it's far better. The 1.85:1 transfer is anamorphic and shows off the beautiful Midwestern sky as well as the not so glamorous downtown of Omaha, NE. The detail is strong, as is the color, which comes through at the right time, although, for the most part, it's rather muted. Also on the plus side, both 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS tracks are offered. While the soundtracks are centered up front with no significant surround presence, they are still clear and distortion free. There are pluses and minuses to this release, which gives a distinct impression that a more comprehensive version will be released at a future date.

Depressing.

Here comes another film from Alexander Payne, who once again takes a mean approach towards the treatment of his characters. It's almost as if he despises them and he doesn't hold back with Warren Schmidt who we get to see as this man about to retiring and his pathetic life. Schmidt has retired from the job he's had for years, and now he doesn't even know if there was a meaning to his life. Even though this film is depressing, it is good. Don't miss it.

After directing the first two movies in the Harry Potter franchise, Chris Columbus opted to serve as producer for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and passed the baton to Y Tu Mamá También director Alfonso Cuarón. Though "immensely popular" is an understatement when it comes to Harry Potter, Azkaban is somewhat of a departure from its predecessors, and particularly beloved among fans for its surprise ending. Prisoner of Azkaban also marks the introduction of Sirius Black (Gary Oldman), who has escaped from the title prison after 12 years of incarceration. Believed to have been the right-hand-man of the dark wizard Voldemort, whom Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) mysteriously rendered powerless during his infancy, some of those closest to Harry suspect Black has returned to exact revenge on the boy who defeated his master. Upon his return to school, however, Harry is relatively unconcerned with Black. Run by Albus Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) -- who is widely regarded as the most powerful wizard of the age -- Hogwarts is renowned for its safety. Harry's nonchalance eventually turns to blind rage after accidentally learning the first of Black's many secrets during a field trip to a neighboring village. Of course, a loose serial killer is only one of the problems plaguing the bespectacled wizard's third year back at school -- the soul-sucking guards of Azkaban prison have been employed at Hogwarts to protect the students, but their mere presence sends Harry into crippling fainting spells. With the help of his friends Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson), and Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Remus Lupin (David Thewlis), Harry struggles to thwart the Dementors, find Sirius Black, and uncover the mysteries of the night that left him orphaned.

Dark and Beautiful.

This by far one of the best installments of the Harry Potter series. Cuaron is an amazing director and proves himself with this big-budget film. He keeps the magic of the book in this film and effortlessly puts his own touch into the film--he doesn't choose style over substance like most people think, but he blends them together perfectly. This film takes a dark turn in the series and...is well...yes I will say it...a near masterpeice.

Chris Columbus' wildly successful adaptation of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. English and Spanish soundtracks are rendered in DD-EX 5.1. Subtitles are accessible in both of those languages. Supplemental materials include a handful of interactive activities and games, deleted footage, and a tour of Hogwarts. Those with a DVD-ROM drive can access trading cards, sign up for Harry Potter emails, and play additional games.

Not the best, but it's fun watching it onscreen.

Why this would get a 5 star rating I'm not sure of. I give this a 3 star rating because it's a sad attempt at re-creating the magic from the books. It's a washed down version of the book and Columbus didn't do a great job...sure it was fun seeing this on the screen after you've read the books, but the integrity of the books have been ripped apart. This is by far one of the worst of the Harry Potter films, and as the series progressed they got better...more so after the Prisoner of Azkaban, when the directors began to blend style AND substance seamlessly.

Fox has assembled a solid presentation of The Sentinel for this DVD. The transfer is as good as one would expect from a major studio; the video is colorful and free of blemishes while the 5.1 stereo soundtrack offers a strong, clear mix that makes solid use of the multi-speaker capabilities. The disc is rounded out by a series of bonus features. First, director Clark Johnson and screenwriter George Nolfi team up for a commentary track; it's pleasant enough and the two offer a decent amount of nuts-and-bolts info about the production. There are also two featurettes about the film and its portrayal of the Secret Service. Both segments veer into puff-piece territory, and those who enjoyed the film might be disappointed that there isn't a comprehensive making-of featurette about the film itself. Elsewhere, there are a series of deleted scenes with optional commentary by Nolfi and a pair of theatrical trailers. All in all, this is a quality disc likely to please fans of the film.

If You Have Nothing Else to Do, Watch This...

The Sentinel is one of thos cheesy films that you might catch on TV over the summer. At times it tries to be some grandiose thing, but fails. The plot is so-so and the events, well at times unbelievable, but I would still recommend it if you just want to see some action flick that serves no purpose whatsoever.

Apocalypto is period piece set in the decline of the Mayan civilization. Gibson gives us a two-part film with an interesting look into the Mayan culture and then turning the film into "The Fugitive" ,just set in the jungle.
This film was criticized for several reasons, and yes it's flawed, but nevertheless it's a great cinematic achievement and it didn't deserve to be lampooned by critics. This is not a movie to miss.

One of Burton's Best and a Classic.

This is a great achievement from the mind of Tim Burton. Watching this film cross between the super-saturated parody of American suburbia to the dark toned images of Gothic horror come together so well, it's clear that the director had the entire movie plotted out in his mind far before the first scene was shot. If Burton would have let someone else direct his, it would have been a failure.
This film is critique on human nature and the way we react to something that's "different" and proves that sometimes change isn't always bad. This is not a movie to miss if you're a fan of Burton.
