The return of Tuesday

Sheryl Crow's latest, Detours, is something of a homecoming, as she's reunited with Tuesday Night Music Club producer Bill Bottrell. (Not long after the success of that disc, the two had a falling out over where the credit properly belonged.)
Detours is both a political and personal album for Crow. Last fall's preview single "Shine Over Babylon" addressed global warming, but that was just the tip of the rapidly-melting iceberg. Consider the album's opener, "God Bless This Mess," in which Crow laments a "war based on lies." The perspective narrows with songs inspired by the end of her "tour de amour" with champion cyclist Lance Armstrong ("Diamond Ring"); a battle with breast cancer ("Make It Go Away"); and new motherhood ("Lullaby For Wyatt").
But while the subject matter may get heavy at times, the music isn't (likely due to Bottrell being behind the board again). Case in point: "Love Is Free," Crow's catchy current single, inspired by the people of New Orleans.
My favorite track? The rave-up "Out of Our Heads."
What's great about it: Sheryl re-teams with producer Bill Bottrell
What's not so great: A bit heavy on the political polemics

An amazing tribute to an amazing singer

Shelby Lynne returns with an understated tribute to the late, great Dusty Springfield, mining her catalog for gems. There's no bombast here, with songs cast in quiet, hushed tones. Perfect for a Sunday morning, a rainy afternoon, or whenever you feel like enjoying a little lovin'.
And if you don't already have Shelby's "I Am Shelby Lynne," get that CD, too!
What's great about it: Reinterpreted Dusty Springfield standards
What's not so great: Quieter than expected
I would recommend this to a friend!
