An excellent travel charger for your EV/PHEV
on September 11, 2023
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
I was really excited by the Rexing 16A charger for my Jeep Wrangler 4xE Plug-in Hybrid - We have a L2 charger for the house, but when traveling or visiting others, we sometimes want to get a little bit of overnight charge on-the-go or we sometimes want to have the ability to plug in at vacation houses, etc.
This charger is a MUCH better made charger than the OEM Jeep charger that came with the vehicle, and with the Jeep charger rated at 12A, we thought we'd get a roughly 30% faster charge with this unit. That's the only real disappointment - With the 4xE, it seems with ANY L1 charger, you're limited to 12A max charging current until you step all of the way up to a full 30A charge. This prevented us from seeing any tangible advantage to this charger over the OEM 12A, but its a MUCH better made charger in the following ways:
- The cables (both from the wall and to the charging port on the vehicle) are extremely pliable and soft: Much more flexible and 'bendy' than the OEM cord which is a more rigid copper feel.
- The adapter part of the cord has a nice display that shows current charge rate (stuck at 12A on my Jeep despite being plugged into a 20A outlet!) and some other info such as the charge flow and status indicator. This adapter unit is also lighter than the OEM unit in my case.
- The 3-prong 20A 5-15 NEMA cord end is NOT a 90-degree/gooseneck version, but a straight cable, which allows it to be used with MANY more outdoor/recessed outlets. This is a MASSIVE improvement over our OEM adapter, which required takeover of a whole gang of outdoor recessed/insulated outlets instead of using just one.
- The entire unit is a bit shorter than every other one I've tested, so if you're not sure if the length is enough, it might be worth looking into the excellent 17' J1772 extension cord that Rexing also offers.
- Both this and the extension cord come in really nice nylon zipper pouches that are the same shape and size so traveling with a stack of them is a breeze.
Rexing seems to make high quality products and this one is no exception, If you need a replacement L1 charger for your EV/PHEV this is an excellent one, but dont expect higher charging performance due to the 16A rating if your vehicle governs/limits L1 charge rates.

Simple, inexpensive but LARGE desktop fan!
on August 11, 2023
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
This fan is more than enough for anyone's tabletop cooling needs.
I got the Holmes device shipped to me and I was surprised at the size of the box being so big for a tabletop fan - Please be sure you know what you're getting here and look at the product dimensions. This fan is roughly the size of some free-standing fans, but without the longer neck and lower pedestal, instead being converted into a tabletop unit. That makes it a GREAT choice for workshops or other large areas where a tabletop setup is ideal, but large cooling areas or mass air circulation might be needed.
The fan is EXTREMELY light also - Its not composed of the typical metal or dense plastic parts - Its mostly ABS plastic which makes it extremely light (even the blade guard is all plastic instead of traditional wire ones) and this adds to the lightweight nature of the unit. The fan is also VERY quiet despite its ability to move massive quantities of air quickly using its 6-blade vanaxial/propeller hybrid design.
The design aesthetic isn't anything too fancy, but the black gloss finish is typical of Holmes products and will likely fit in just about anywhere. Its an inoffensive design that looks good at home of in the office as well as the shop.
In short: Good, strong, quiet fan - Made of lightweight materials at a good price. Would recommend.

Excellent value and portability in a Chromebook
on April 23, 2023
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
The Acer Chromebook Spin is a mainstay in the value end of the Chromebook spectrum - Its been around for 6-7 years in different generations, and continues to impress for its compactness, battery life, and simplicity/no-frills approach to getting ChromeOS into the hands of kids and computing beginners looking for a highly portable solution.
The device is NOT PREMIUM IN ANY WAY. Its a simple, plastic unapologetically cheap design with GIANT screen bezels and plastic-feeling parts that, for the most part, seem to get the job done and is a formula Acer isn't ready to change. The exception is the Gorilla Glass now used on the screen, which makes it much more durable than the plastic or early glass screens of its predecessor.
I can't knock this thing for being cheap - It only costs ~$200 new, so I wasn't expecting premium materials or excellent build quality - I will say that it's better constructed than its price would suggest, and having a 360 hinge at this price level is unprecedented. I will however knock the processor power as it's noticeably laggy and lacks any kind of graphics ability for gaming or anything but the most basic Android/Play Store apps.
Beyond that, if you're looking to get that kid a semi-tough, well made, but replaceable device for the everyday couch computing or homework, this is a great device for it. If you're looking for a sleek ultraportable with backlit keys, bright display, sharp text, and snappy performance, look elsewhere, but prepare to spend a lot more.

Tremendous value that includes MagSafe!
on March 25, 2023
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
Finally the 3rd party accessories are starting to include MagSafe without breaking the bank!
This Insignia case is a GREAT silicone phone case, and comes in a slightly lighter than OEM grey color that I really like, and pairs nicely with my Space Black iPhone 14 Pro Max.
While I love that this includes MagSafe, I do think Apple still makes a better silicone case overall. This case shows molding seams all around its perimeter that more expensive cases take the time to clean up/melt down to make them invisible or seamless in appearance. This is NOT a major deal and it's barely noticeable and DEFINITELY worth the price difference here. For the most part this case looks just like the OEM cases, save for a slightly different gray color, and this subtle seam, and the absence of the Apple logo that only the Apple OEM cases can display.
Also on the topic of MagSafe capability, it seems to hold my MagSafe wallet and Apple battery pack just as well as my phone does by itself and just as well as any Apple OEM case does.
On the topic of protection the camera bumper perimeter is exactly like OEM as is the elevation of the perimeter around the screen.
All in all the case is an EXCELLENT 3rd party case that performs and looks just like original equipment. Looking forward to seeing more color choices from Insignia on this!

An interesting take on the woven watch band format
on March 25, 2023
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
These Modal bands have always interested me where they brought a good design vs one of Apple's more expensive bands, and my wife really liked the styling and color offered by this nylon woven band for her 41mm Series 7 Apple Watch Stainless.
The band doesn't perfectly match the stainless watch, as it seems more geared to work with the "Starlight" aluminum colorway offered on the Series 8 watches, but its still a nice looking pair.
My wife's chief complaint about the watch is the presence of the clasp mechanism outside of the band. While it's an interesting aesthetic design it has its problems with scratching on surfaces and either taking damage to its metal ring, or scratching other things, such as the palmiest of a laptop.
Considering that most of the implementations of the woven nylon dont have a clasp at all, this seems unnecessary and should not have been included, but at the same time it makes the band unique and (I think) more formal/dressy looking, something that the Apple OEM bands dont convey.
I'd recommend this to anyone who wants a dressy version of the nylon woven style who doesn't mind being careful with what it comes into contact with.

A lot of antennae for the coverage provided...
on March 25, 2023
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
I've always thought of TP Link as a middle-of-the-road networking equipment provider, but their recent mesh products have faired well with reviewers, so I was excited to evaluate the new Archer AX5400 standalone router as the new hub of our Internet connection in the house.
Back in the 802.11n (4th gen) and 802.11ac (5th gen) wireless days, we required repeaters and eventually succeeded with mesh networks in our densely-framed house in our suburban neighborhood. Once 802.11ax (Wifi-6th Gen) came about, we were excited to see if the improved network bands offered would allow us to simplify our home network and go back to a single-source router setup. We were KIND OF right to make this assumption.
First of all the Archer AX5400 is only a Wifi-6 router, not a Wifi-6e router so its limited to dual-band capabilities, but offers just about all of the features in the WiFi 6 standard to alleviate concerns like this: It has 6 beam-forming antennae, but I'm not sure how much of a coverage improvement that creates, but does allow for a larger capacity of simultaneous connections to the router. The AX5400 also has excellent uplink abilities with both a 2.5Gbps and 1 Gbps WAN/LAN links, allowing for connection to higher speed fiber modems with more than a 1Gbps uplink. With the high speed capabilities of this router, this is a welcome addition.
In my real-world testing the router performed admirably on my 500mbps x 20mbps home cable connection, delivering my full modem-provided bandwidth even several rooms away, while the over 30 smart home devices in my home worked without incident during my tests. I did start to lose signal/speed as I moved upstairs from the router to the far end of the house, something specific to the details of my home's build and the arrangement of my networking equipment, which is why we've always faired better with Mesh systems.
I was delighted when I realized you can add any of TP-Link's OneMesh products into a mesh network with this router as the core, allowing for maximum performance home-wide while still getting the high bandwidth and high speed coverage of this system.
I'd recommend this for someone with a home where single-routers are adequate and this one will bring great performance and great capacity, but if you're used to the coverage of a mesh, this is just one piece of the equation for getting the right setup!

The ultimate QHD gaming experience and streamer!
on March 25, 2023
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
This Samsung G6 gaming monitor has it all, and everything is well executed, without compromise.
The monitor starts as a basic 27" curved display - The curve on Samsung's gaming and consumer monitors is more pronounced than their competitors I've noticed, and much more pronounced than it is on their larger TVs as well.
This monitor has it all - In case you're wondering what its capable of -
- Smart TV/Screen features: This thing has an included remote and COULD function independent of a PC or console as just a Smart TV with apps using Samsung's "TV Plus" smart TV interface. It even has Samsung's "Gaming Hub" that offers XBOX Game Pass Ultimate streaming and Nvidia GeForce NOW as well as Amazon's Luna gaming service. Those things alone make this a streaming console in an all-in-one form factor, even with nothing connected!
The connection experience is great. This thing supports 2x HDMI ports and 1x DisplayPort for lots of connectivity options to PCs, docking stations and consoles. I was able to simultaneously connect my XBox, Switch, and DisplayPort-based gaming PC to this screen and it worked flawlessly with all of them.
The real star shines with the PC gaming experience - With up to 240Hz refresh rate using FreeSync technology, this thing is not only sharp (QHD/2K resolution is plenty for a 27" screen) but it also makes games look amazing with no tearing or motion blur. This doesn't do it virtually and create a soap-opera effect, it just makes games and consoles that support higher refresh rates look hyper-realistic without the strange effect of virtual alternatives.
The other impressive thing about this screen is it's nearly perfect backlighting - No light leak or irregularity, something that I think comes with its HDR600 rating and REALLY dark black point. Colors are quite vivid, but it seems that contrast takes a hit, but what's really happening is that gray point is raised in this configuration but its less useful than higher-ratings of HDR from OLED TVs and the like. This is still great for streaming and gaming where artistically many creators are leveraging darker scenes. This is a table stakes requirement for today's darker media.
This is a gaming monitor, but I loved that it was still professional enough looking and matte-black finished to look good on an office desk, but it has some really cool colored lighting and subsequent RGB effects that emanate from the speakers at the bottom and the bezel surrounding the monitor stand (this bezel also emanates light when using the VESA mount adapter for wall-mounted setups where I'm sure the effect is even more interesting.
This is a GREAT gaming monitor and a really useful media device also. I highly recommend it as a utilitarian addition to anyone's rig.

It’s RAM - I don’t know what else to say…
on February 27, 2023
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
This Crucial 32GB DDR4 upgrade kit is an excellent upgrade for those mobile/notebook or ultra compact form factor desktops that take SODIMM RAM of the DDR4-3200 variety.
I was able to install this temporarily in my Intel NUC unit that normally has DDR4-2400 SODIMMS installed and instead these worked perfectly. The NUC, a micro desktop, supports all the way to 3200MHz clocked RAM, but came with 2x8GB of slower RAM in the kit I’d purchased.
Not only did the capacity increase 2x, but the speed was also almost 2x for reading and writing.
I didn’t perform any objective benchmarks but Windows 11 on the machine booted nearly instantly (the system is an 8th generation Corei7 H-Series CPU so the slower smaller previous RAM was definitely a bottleneck.
I am now able to run additional virtual machines and multitask in browsers and creative apps with a much higher memory ceiling until paging to disk slows things down. This is in addition to the speed/performance gains.
I’d recommend anyone upgrading RAM on a DDR4 system choose 3200 speed, and thus Crucial kit is excellent for a 32GB upgrade!

Excellent and very portable trimmer!!
on February 27, 2023
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
I really love how Manscaped designed this new all-in-one trimmer:
First the comb - 10 different length settings and one barrel selector for the best trimming and length management without extras and accessory combs to keep track of in a bag or travel with.
Second the charger - As USB-C becomes more and more ubiquitous, this was a must for my next all-in-1 trimmer - Allows me to charge it with any other Type C charger (but I do appreciate that they included one as well!!)
The weight and storage: this thing is hefty/well built but not heavy at all! I also love its portability with the nice small hard carry case included. Really makes traveling with trimming abilities easier!
The overall industrial design is great, the cutting power is good for facial and body hair, and the comb height adjustment worked perfectly for all of my use cases.
I’d highly recommend for anyone wanting simple, one-piece, easy charging beard or body hair management. There are no better modern, smart trimming/care products for men than the Manscaped lineup!!

Great stand! So-so docking solution...
on December 27, 2022
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
The j5Create line of Apple accessories seems to be on the lower-quality end of accessories, but offer form factors that some of the other name brands do not. One such missing element in Apple, or Mophie, or 12South's lineup is a good adjustable docking stand.
For those still wondering "why do I need a stand with my dock?", I'll give you a primer: Stands like this allow users who aren't using external monitors and webcams to elevate the 13",14", or 16" screen of the MacBook Air or Pro to a comfortable viewing height without the need to use household items or books to stand the device up to a comfortable viewing level. Those stands with integrated docking allow the permanent connection of peripherals for this desk setup (such as backup/storage drives, keyboards/mice/wireless dongles, external monitors, wired Ethernet connections, etc) as part of an integrated laptop connection solution.
This is where the j5 docking stand "stands out"... It's a well built, VERY sturdy elevated stand and offers the basics when it comes to docking. It's very firm, has a nice aluminum finish that matches the Apple aesthetic very well. It also has really nice rubberized surfaces that make contact with the laptop's feet for secure grippy fit even when maxed out at the highest vertical angle possible.
Its the docking itself that's just so-so... First of all the dock is pretty limited and more of a port replicator: A few USB-A ports, passthrough USB-Type C port capabilities, and a single HDMI out port for connection to an auxiliary (or primary) monitor. I believe this connection is HDMI 2.0 so you can at least drive a 4K60 single monitor connection, and with the right cable, a 5K2K or certain ultra wide WQHD 21:9 monitors will work here at 60Hz. The issue is that there is only one HDMI port when these beastly Apple machines in the target market are capable of MUCH MORE from external displays. I'll be honest, for the extra $20, I highly recommend the OTHER j5create model that offers dual HDMI 2.0 and Ethernet, for a more rounded out docking experience.
The dock itself is also made of aluminum colored plastic, with what I imagine will be a heavily scratched up patina within just a few months of use at my desk. I really wish j5 had found a way to encase this as part of the stand in aluminum or just picked a better feeling plastic, but at this sub-$100 price range, this isn't much of a complaint and why this dock still earns the stars it does.
All in all I think this is a good entry model and comes at a great price, but the higher-end model comes at a MUCH better value within a $20 difference at the time of this writing, and I really wish Apple or some of their premium partners would produce a docking stand like this with less gaud but I applaud j5 for at least leaving their logo where a docked MacBook would hide it this time.

Any plans on the Sony Slt-A55 coming into stock soon?

I saw that the a33 is available but the a55 performs better in low light
There is no sensor size difference between the A33 and A55, in fact, outside of GPS capabilities, and a 2MP sensor difference, there is no difference in the cameras whatsoever.

Low Light performance is based on the cameras sensor size, not resolution, so a EXMOR R CMOS sensor is the same in both cameras, and therefore produces the same low-light results at the same ISO levels.

I decided to stop waiting for the A55 and bit the bullet on the A33 just over a month ago. It has been fantastic.

sony SLT a55 and a580

I am going to upgrade my a100 this year and would like to buy one of these cameras. When will they be available. I really like the Geek Squad Warranty which is why I haven't gone out and bought one of these from Ritz yet.
If you're not in need of the GPS capabilities of the A55, you ought to consider the A33. The two are identical, save for the GPS capabilities, and a 2MP sensor difference. You'd save 100-150 on the unit, and get the exact same quality.

As far as the 580 goes, you're losing a lot there, including the HD video capability (and instant record) of the a33/a55. There is also a superior CMOS sensor in the 33/55 line.

Good luck with wherever your purchase takes you!

Sony SLT-A55

I see the SLT-A55 on the web page, been there nearly a month now, when will it actually show up in a store or become available on the site?
If you're tired of waiting, and you don't need GPS capabilities (you can still tag your photos in software later, after all), you should check out the a33, which is available in most stores now. Its the EXACT same camera (save for the GPS not being there, and 14.2 instead of 16.2 MP) - Hardly noticeable differences. The a33 does EVERYTHING I need and then some! Not one other feature is different between the two.
