Some good points, but Definitely Needs Improvement

Type of Listener:Avid listener
Most Important to Purchase:Sound quality
How Often Used:3-5 times a week
First off, I am no audiophile, but, on the other hand, I did a lot of comparison shopping when I bought an MP3 speaker system recently because I really want something with well-balanced sound. I found this Klipsch SXT had surprisingly good bass for such a compact system - very impressive, but the sound in the higher/treble range sounded muffled to me, as if this system was struggling to play the high's or the treble range. I compared this system to the Logitech s715i which at the time of this review is also sold at Best Buy, and I thought the Logitech definitely outperformed the Klipsch, as far as producing more balanced sound, as well as having some other advantages which I will talk about in this review.
Also, one frustrating thing I found on this SXT is the iPod dock. Many times I would set my ipod touch into the doc, and I would hear the standard "Pling" that would tell me the ipod had been docked or connected, but when I tried to play the SXT, the iPod had in fact not docked correctly, and I had to either readjust the iPod, or take it off the dock, and then re-dock it again. I found this to be the case over and over again, where it was difficult to get a good connection to the iPod. And, this was after I took off the case off the iPod, and it was still very problematic to dock on the SXT.
Also, the dock on the SXT is made flimsy plastic, to the point that when I was docking my ipod (and I was gentle with this) I felt that I had to hold or cradle the SXT dock in one hand, as I was docking the ipod, and all of this made the simple procedure way more difficult than it should have been.
In comparison, the Logitech s715i was a breeze to dock my ipod. First off, the dock on the Logitech sits on top of the unit, and is made of much sturdier plastic. Also, it seemed as if every time I plugged in my iPod on the Logitech, it would take on the first try, no problem, and then it was hooked up correctly where I could just enjoy my music. Also, the Logitech's docking mechanism actually can move front to back in a type of hinging movement, which is great if you want to change any settings on your iphone or ipod when it is docked, so that you don't lose connection. This hinging or flexible dock on the Logitech is a great idea, and I wish other manufacturers of these systems would take note of this.
The remote on this SXT is great, very easy to use, and had a decent range of 10-15 feet, which is the basic range for remotes in this category. Worked almost every time, when using it across the room. No complaints there.
The other issue that I didn't like about this SXT is that right in the middle of the power cord, there's a power brick, which makes unplugging this device and moving it more difficult than other units. Most other units just have the small block adapter right on the plug, which makes them easier to move around.
I really liked the styling of the SXT, it is very compact, and has a great look to it. But with all the other issues with it, and comparing it to the Logitech s715i, I returned the Klipsch after just having it a few days, and I am going to keep the Logitech, which seems to be one of the best ipod speakers in this price category.
Additionally, one thing I realized while doing some research, if you do have the extra money to spend on these ipod speaker systems, at the time of this review, Best Buy is also selling another system, the Altec Lansing Mix iMT800/810. Yes, the Altec Lansing is in a different price range, but it is so worth it based on the sound quality. From my research, and after reading a lot of reviews on the internet, I would recommend either of these systems. Unfortunately, I can't recommend the Klipsch SXT, and would advise others to pass it by.
Hope this helps.
What's great about it: Lower range/Bass sounds great, puts out big sound from a small unit, good looking system
What's not so great: Docking iPod Touch is difficult, Doesn't handle highs/Treble range well, power brick in the middle of power cord
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Glad I finally Bought Them
on February 7, 2011

Okay, some background first. Back in Oct 2010 - I bought the Creative Labs Gigaworks T20 speakers from Best Buy as well. The CL GW's are good, and I still have them and I will continue to use them, but I wanted a speaker system that had better highs, stronger bass as well as that could handle higher levels of volume without the sound quality getting distorted, and also had good sound quality and clarity.
Not mentioning any other vendors who sell speakers, I looked around, at a couple of other speaker systems for about the same price as the Soundsticks, including the M Audio AV 40's (too big for a computer desk - even though I have a large desk) and also the Audioengine A2's, (read over and over that they need to be put on stands to optimize the sound, rather than just putting them on the desk, and the power supply for the AudioEngines breaks too easily).
I finally decided to go with a 2.1 system, and the Soundsticks was at the top of my list. All I can say is wow! I will confess, I am no audiophile, I just like a lot of good music, including a lot of classical, and instrumental music. The Subwoofer definitely puts out good bass, and thankfully is adjustable - I don't like the bass to overpower the music. The music is crisp, clear, and these Soundsticks play LOUD, and also the sound does not get distorted at higher volumes. So far no problems with them, I have read some other reviews where problems developed when the system has some time behind its belt, but I will see about that, and then add another review later if necessary.
And, to everyone out there, who puts the subwoofer on their desk, I tried that, and the music sounds much better and balanced when you put the sub on the floor, no question about that. The other issue, is if you listen to these Soundsticks at a desk, where you have the Subwoofer under the desk, the music tends to sound better a few feet in front of the desk, where the satellites blend with the Subwoofer better. Don't get me wrong, they sound great when I am sitting at my desk, but the real "Sweet Spot" is where the music can blend together. I also like that the Sattelites are adjustable, and that they can be aimed straight ahead, or canted or tilted so the music can be aimed at your ears.
A couple of shortcomings on the Soundsticks. 1. The bass control is on the Subwoofer - on the floor, which is a pain to adjust. 2. There's no control for Treble. 3. The length of the wires for the 2 satellites to the subwoofer is too short, I wish Harman Kardon would consider lengthening this. 4. Like many other people have voiced criticism about lack of a jack for headphones I agree. For the money you pay for the Soundsticks, this is definitely a poor oversight on the part of Harman Kardon. The one thing I don't care about, is the volume control, many others have complained that there's no visible way to check on the volume level. This doesn't really matter to me, and I would dismiss this issue, being that I control the volume on the ipod, & on the computer - so I could not care less about that one.
I will admit, while the sound quality of the Soundsticks is better than the Creative Labs Gigaworks T20's, the T20's do have control for both Bass, Treble, and volume control, and a headphone jack, right on the front of the right speaker. Even though these are different speaker systems in different price ranges, just wanted to show what Creative Labs has going for their T20 System.
I would definitely recommend the Soundsticks. But I can't give them 5 stars, only 4, because of the flaws listed above. I am definitely going to enjoy these. Regarding the price of these Soundsticks - Yes, it's a good chunk of money to put down to buy speakers, but being that you get what you pay for, and for the most part, they are worth it.
What's great about it: Unique styling of both Sattelites & Sub, sound quality is amazing, Crank up the volume and they still sound great!
What's not so great: Put the Bass & On/Off on one of the Sattelites, include Treble control, add a jack for headphone usage would be great.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I thought I had the same issue but I fixed it
December 25, 2011
Hey, in regards to the audio not working on your macbook pro, did you go into your SYSTEM PREFERENCES, and then go into AUDIO, and then OUTPUT, I found that I had to select the TV or Monitor that the MacBook Pro was plugged into, in order to get the sound working externally from the MacBook Pro. I have a 2010 MacBook Pro, and thought the Rocketfish adapter was not working, until I changed the audio setting.

Freedom from wires
By BlueGiant from Buffalo NY
The Bose soundlink is a great alternative to small wired speakers. This is ideal for a bedroom/or living room. The sound is quite loud for the size of the unit. I have a small apartment and I cannot turn it up completely because it is just too loud. What is missing is individual sounds controls. It would be great if this unit had the ability to adjust treble & bass as needed but it doesn't have such controls. I think distance that the wireless connectivity operates optimally is fairly limited and can be cut short by interior walls or even home enabled wifi. It can also be used as a auxiliary speaker that you can hook up to your TV or Computer. I have taken this unit out of the house and it really sounds great outside. I have taken this with me when I travel and have to stay in a hotel and such. The quality of the unit speaks for itself. Even with those things that may need improvement I love it and and will not trade it for anything. I think that if you bought one you would find that it is very functional and enjoyable.

Tweaking / changing sound controls
November 2, 2012
I know that on my iPad you can change and improve the sound quality to some degree with some pre-set controls . I would think that on most laptops and some other tablets you can do the same. The SoundLink is a device, I don't own one yet, I am waiting this one out to see if and when more competitors come to the table here and for this technology to come down in price.

Great phone for the price
By Nickno1 from Phoenix AZ
I like this phone better than my old kyocera Hydro. I came from boost mobile and T-mobile has better service and data than boost. when you are reading reviews about the service like dropped calls and slow data its just their area. I'm from Phoenix and I get 4G. I have a picture to show you how fast the 4g is in Phoenix

I actually purchased 3 as Christmas presents
By Papa
I was excited to purchase 3 at Christmas time for my children.
What made it better was that I had a $100.00 Best Buy certificate to offset the cost. The Best Buy at Whitehall near Allentown refused to accept the certificate and made NO effort to find out why it couldn't be used. I was told "call customer service and ask them but do you want the speakers or not"

Are you reviewing the Onyx Mini?
March 8, 2017
Your critical review is focused on your purchasing experience, and not being able to use your Best Buy gift certificate, not the actual product, the Onyx Mini.
So, if you ever review a restaurant, and the quality and caliber of food that is served at a particular restaurant, do you also give the restaurant 1 star, because you had such a bad experience driving to the restaurant? Come on, these are two completely separate issues that you are covering above.
