Heart-pounding, Chestbursting Fear

It's no secret that we Alien fans are only in it for parts 1 & 2. I feel that this collection is worth the price, not only for the bundle but especially considering the fact that the studios went out of their way to give us a Remastered set. You don't need a rundown of the films. By now you've probably seen them or heard of them by now and you know the greatness that awaits with their viewing. For a hardcore fan, I wanted the Quadrilogy for the Special Features "Making of" and "Behind the Scenes", bonus material which infuriatingly was not on the standalones of Alien & Aliens. Seeing the development of these classics is always a treat because you see what went into these films back before the notoriety and before the legendary status these movies would go on to receive later down the road. A must-own. Also the fact that you get to see "what could have been" in a certain deleted scene from Alien and the extended version of Aliens is a welcome addition to this definitive collection.

Horror's forgotten Wolf gem

Though not as good as I remember it being from my youth, I am still happy that Scream Factory finally dedicated this film to Blu-Ray. I initially thought that the length of the ears of the wolves made them look like were-rabbits. The story is a bit thin, but the performances especially Dee Wallace and Robert Picardo is great.
Though I do wish they had upscaled the BD Bonus Features, I am thankful they did implement them. I know Scream Factory works on a tight budget with these projects and their effort is appreciated. There's over an hour of specials and they give a unique perspective into the film as well as the mind of director Joe Dante.
The thought of descending upon a lake shore retreat inhabited by werewolves is an intriguing premise. I've grown to have an appreciation for the appearance for the werewolves as they look uniquely "Howling".

What's great about it: Interesting werewolf look, Robert Picardo's performance, BD Extras
What's not so great: BD Extras not upscaled

An underrated Horror experience

Scream Factory does it again. Wernor Herzog and Klaus Kinski give us this reimagining of the 1922 gothic masterpiece. Some people find this to be the inferior of the two films under this name, however, if you're looking for something different, stellar direction by the helmer, mesmerizing performance by Klaus, I would say give this one a chance.

What's great about it: Presentation, Acting, Blu-Ray upscale
What's not so great: The plot could have taken more chances to stand apart from the original

The King of the Monsters Returns
on September 24, 2014

I remember the teaser trailer of the bombing run where the marines are diving down into a terrorized metropolis. The darkness, the POV, and then came the size of the monstrosity in the distance responsible for the destruction. I thought "This is going to rock".
I appreciate this film for the serious tone it took. This is the king of the monsters and should be treated with respect, not campy nonsense. Much like Man of Steel I didn't understand the criticism that many levelled at the movie. I don't mind when people disagree with my opinion but I do ask that they articulate beyond "That sucked." The opening to me is amazing. The montage of mythical sea creatures on old world maps and the skeletal bones of prehistoric terrors spliced in with footage of atomic age weapons testing was awesome. Further into the story, I liked that the nuclear weapons did NOT create Godzilla but was rather used as a deterrent to kill the beast.
When I saw the film in theaters, the moment that Godzilla rises out of the water after causing a tsunami on an island, shots are fired into the air to illuminate the threat. Within the movie, a hush falls upon the film to a deafening silence and when the audience followed suit in anticipation for what was to come, I knew I was watching something special. It was an epic moment.
I have to admit. I'm all about story and characters. However, when Godzilla fought one monster, I wanted to see more. At first I was left hoping for more because I wanted to see more of the beasts and more of the titular creature. However, I realize that a movie leaving me wanting more is a good thing.
I'll be the first to admit that whereas I liked Brian Cranston, his Marine son and his nurse wife were barely characters with not much to do. I liked Ken Wantanabe as the scientist. His balance of paleontological curiosity and fear for the discovery of the goliath creature is a welcomed depth.
The end movie battle between the creatures with humans caught in the middle at the mercy of these titans is great. Certain aspects are a bit clunky, but I do appreciate the serious tone and the fact that this was taken seriously. We get inundated with reboots, but this is the example of when we get talent and money behind it. I do hope the seqeul(s) tighten up the script and invest in your human characters.

What's great about it: The premise was taken seriously, Brian Cranston, the mood, the opening
What's not so great: The hollow characters

Political Thriller masquerading as a Comic Movie
on September 24, 2014

Whenever dealing with a franchise or series, far too often we hear "these just keep getting better". In the weeks proceeding the release, hearing this film's label as "the greatest Marvel film" was met with agreement instead of denouncement.
Convinced that Captain America was going to move on from WWII era controversy, this sequel ties back to the original even in the face of upping the ante in the face of the Avengers. The fact that this film's handlers made the choice of "not treating superhero as its own genres, but mixing in and borrowing from other genres" made for a film distinct from Iron Man and Thor. Additionally, the fact that this deep into Marvel's Universe the fact that they were brave enough to hit the reset button was a welcomed choice to keep from stagnating.
If you're a hardcore Marvel fan, you'll appreciate the twist really does change the universe. If you're a casual fan, you'll enjoy the slick plot that is relevant to today's issues regarding government control over technology and privacy concerning it's citizens. Then, of course, there's the Winter Soldier himself. I read a review calling him Marvel's Terminator. Pretty accurate description.
