Plays Nice With OS X & Doesn't Break Windows
on February 25, 2015
Posted by: wizbangFL
from South Florida
Environment: Because I use both OS X and Win 7 in my day to day life I look at a device and it's ability to work well in multiple operating system environments. I had a previous Wacom Bamboo which I finally needed to replace, but didn't want to spend a whole lot of cash to get some basic ability to do drawing and have pen control, At first glance it appeared just like my old Bamboo and the model below this is the compatible model, but I noticed that this device also has a touch aspect which appeals to me. Anytime I can get a device off my desk that doesn't need to be there I'm all in for that. So I jumped and got this at the end of December 2014.
Review: Having had the Bamboo this device is very similar to the bamboo. The pen nib is used to communicate to the device (primarily, but i'll get to that in a bit) it also gives a sense of "feel" with how hard you are pressing that other "spongy" stylus drawing devices fall to deliver on. There are 2 buttons on the lower portion of the pen and the opposite end defaults to an eraser function. The Wacom Tablet software is required for the device to function or in the case of OS X for the device to be seen by the OS. Installation was simple in OS X 10.10 & Win 7. Wacom has free software they give you but I have found that the software beyond the drivers is restricted and really a marketing ploy for the software developers. I use the device with Photoshop in OS X and it has customization features which were established between Adobe & Wacom that allow the tablet to transmit the pressure used on the tablet and that translates to photoshop or illustrator. The tablet also has 4 buttons 2 left and 2 right which provide standard actions or can be customized for program specific actions based on the program which is in foreground/focused. It also has touch capacity which allows it to act as a trackpad (a blue right at the right side glows when the touch use is being registered). Most of the OS X gestures are designated already in the tablet with the omission of Mission control. In windows 7 it works well and has some similar customization features. I had been finding that my touches to the pad where registering when I was trying to use the pen alone. Wacom has a slide switch which disables the touch aspect until switched back. Good when I am trying to get something "just right" and don't want to be distracted. The location of the slide switch is located on the top right of the tablet and the Wacom is very light and switch so flat that you have to hold the tablet to move the switch. It should be easier to activate preferably a pushbutton or at the bottom of the tablet where it's easier to locate and manipulate. Also, the lack of a good place for the pen to have a home (so to speak) Wacom put a fabric loop at the top of the tablet and your intended to put the pen in the loop (which is a pain because you have to really push to get it in the pen in it where it isn't protruding from one end or the other of the tablet.) Putting the pen in a traditional cup used for ballpoint pens/pencils will quickly wear or damage the nib from repeat thunking the pen in the cup. The old bamboo tablets had a pen holder that when placing the pen into it held the pen by the sloped end of the pen and the nib never hit bottom protecting it and keeping it clean. I believe it was a attempt to keep cost down, but it is offered as an accessory on their website for $10. Using the pen stand is highly recommended to maintain the nib and device longevity. There are additional nibs located in the base of the tablet. I've never needed to use a replacement nib but I understand I would have if it wasn't so meticulous with the prior tablet.
Wacom features allow for a lot of customization with the area that drawing is recognized (which may be different between pen and touch functions) I had my Bamboo for 7 years and if this lasts as long it will be well spent. 1 star off for Wacom being cheap and not including the pen stand everyone should have and for not placing the switch to control the on off of the touch feature in a more accessible place or with a easier to activate/deactivate switch. Both of these are blunders by the product developers who apparently failed to do usability tests with the final product beyond the software aspect and it is a good solid product, just not what I'd classify as "excellent" which in this day & age is rare unless you ignore shortcomings.

Very good job of cooling, tricky installation
on June 7, 2014
Posted by: wizbangFL
from Fort Lauderdale, FL
The environment were using the unit in:
Our Late 60's condo (top floor) so our ceiling (made of solid concrete & no insulation) becomes radiant as the day progresses. Meaning by 2:00pm the ceiling temperature will radiate 82 to 92 temperatures. Measures by thermometer attached to ceiling concrete (justifing installation of surface insulation in future throughout condo.) South Florida Humidity is generally 75 to 85%.
Installation:
Unit comes with 5 to 6' accordion hose (when fully expanded made of semi-rigid plastic) There is also a window insert with 2 openings (one for hot air exhaust from the air exchange. So unit brings in air from outside keeps it within the unit and then exhausts the hot air taken from the coils to the outside. (this process occurs fully outside in a wall unit or in the outside box unit of a central AC) The plastic insert has 2 side panels that allow the unit to fit many windows. Unfortunately our's was way too big (again a function of a 60's condo in florida) I was able to use some foam to fill in the gaps until i could go to the store and buy a piece of wood that would bridge the gap and some foam to seal the window (this is going to be there at least for 3 or 4 months and I don't want to have it leak air if i can easily prevent it. So I cut holes for the 2 hoses and attached them to the wood board, the board was already but to length at my big box home improvement store and a little drilling and i had the hole cut out. problem solved and installed. For less extreme environments the included kit will work in many climates.
Results:
Last week was our first real bit of heat for the summer which ended the week Thursday (low 75 high 87) and Friday (low 74 high 92) and the ceiling radiating down 85 on Thursday and 90 on Friday. With that the unit keep the temperature at 77 all day at desk level (also have a thermometer on the wall next to me) as i look up right now the ceiling is at 90 and my level is at 76. So as a result I can work my 10 hour days and not pass out from the heat! The unit also takes a lot of the water out of the air but I have yet to need to drain the unit. Maybe being somehow vented in the exhaust air exchange?
Unit does have a remote control (all the adjustments are done with the remote) which is essential because there are just basic controls on the unit (Unit On/Off & LED On/Off) Presumably to keep little hands from changing the temperatures, etc. As I noted you can TURN OFF the Led light so it won't bother those who are kept awake by other bright LED's in a bedroom (or if you just ind the lights distracting) Cold Air exhausts from the top of the unit in a basic 180* distribution (non oscillating) That Remote can also snap into a inset in the top of the unit just behind the vent at the top. (if you tend to lose remotes)
Lastly Energy Impact: This month has been substantially higher than prior month but comparing a full week of use with this unit and being able to reduce usage of the central AC has actually resulted in a slight savings. So overall very happy with this choice.
*Note that single hose units will not perform the same*

A "Super" Drive with Kryptonite parts.
on December 29, 2012
Posted by: wizbangFL
from Fort Lauderdale, FL
This drive looks quite smart and not needing external power is a big plus. I was excited when I got this as a christmas present. HOWEVER, when the drive dies after one use of copying 2 cd's onto my Mac I have serious concerns about the quality vs the price of this product. Yes, only 2 cd's. If I plug it in to a USB port (directly in the back of the computer, not through a hub) the device makes a "click-click" sound and that's it. Putting a disc in it does nothing. For $75 I would expect it to be substantially more reliable.
What's great about it: No external power supply needed, stylish
What's not so great: Poor manufacturing quality, dead after 1 use

Ordered this for my 15" mid 2012 MacBook Pro. It appears based on the details to be compatible with my computer. Installed the memory and almost immediately the video starts to be scrambled and the unit freezes frequently and without warning. Digging into the information with one of my friends the Apple specific is 1.35v not 1.5v so the higher voltage will result in instability with longer usage.
Wish the voltage was listed in product specifics.

It's a Parity and has some moments, but.....
on August 25, 2012

Overall this parity of the Twilight series is ok. The film tries to make a parity of the initial Twilight film and throwing their creative spin to their version. At the beginning, some of the jokes are overkill, (trying too hard to be funny) almost like the film writer is afraid that if they don't start trashing the movie right off people will shut it off. Some of the jokes are very "Saturday Night Life-esque" and are really hilarious with their references to other pop culture references. The actress who plays the Kristen Stewart (Bella Swan) has a lock on a lot of the quirks of the character. After a while the one liner after another schtick gets very old and has me wanting to reach for the fast forward, but I plugged on because some of the jokes as I said are really funny. The problem is there are so many that aren't. A lot of teenage, high school, humor. I'll play it in the background if I'm studying, but I can't sit through it a 2nd time without doing something else, it's just too painful.
This is a good film for someone who likes "prank humor" or wants to see how disturbed someone can make the Twilight movie, some I would recommend, but in a very limited way.
What's great about it: If you've seen the Twilight Series and are in tune with pop culture there are some good one liners.
What's not so great: Trying to make the movie nothing but one parity joke after another gets tiresome.

Pay me now or pay me later.

from Fort Lauderdale, FL
Age:45-54
Phone size:Just right
I was with AT&T and then with Verizon. With each company I had a 400 or 450 minute plan with texting and data. In total after an employee discount from a organization I worked with my bill was $85 or $90 a month. (without tethering) With a 2 year commitment required that means I would pay $2040 for service and $250 to $350 for the phone. I found that with AT&T they charge a activation fee or an upgrade fee for the first month. So the $200 is the "come on" and after their activation and/or upgrade fee the total was $50 more before tax. Total for 2 years $2290.
Virgin Unlimited is $53 (with the bill charged to your credit card automatically-including tax) so for 2 years the service is $1272 add the iphone cost of $700 total is $1972. Thing is i didn't ever get close to using the phone 500 minutes a month. So I have a plan that is $42 a month for 1200 total minutes total for 2 years including phone $1710 or a $500 savings and if after a year and 1/2 I want a new iPhone I can buy a new one and not have to pay a penalty. That freedom speaks loads. Sprint service on the iPhone is better than what I was getting on my HTC with Verizon or Samsung my roommate had with AT&T.
Yes the internet is only 3g, but I haven't had any problems with not having any internet which was a constant problem on the HTC phone with Verizon even after they replaced the phone twice.
I did but a Mobi Juice Pack air so I have extended battery life (no it's not as dainty as the phone without the extra battery, but the battery slides on and off easily so if I don't need the extra battery life for a night out I just slide it off) In my car the bluetooth quickly connects and with so many options and SIRI it's wonderful. I love to ask it questions that are simple but any other computer wouldn't be able to handle. Like "Do I need to take an umbrella today?" and it will tell you that it is or isn't likely to rain.
Even though IOS is starting to look dated it's still the easiest to navigate. My only thing that I miss from android is the time and weather widget. But..... making a call, texting, or syncing with a computer is so much easier and easier with the iPhone that I don't miss it "that much" and my phone doesn't freeze.
What's great about it: The iPhone finally available without a contract on virgin mobile
What's not so great: The initial outlay gives you a bit of sticker shock

Worst Vac Ever
By harusami from Denver, CO
This is the worst vacuum I've ever owned. Overpriced and high-maintenance. 1. The instructions are written in what appears to be alien hieroglyphs. 2. If you have long hair, forget about it because hair will stop the beater bar and you'll have to stop every 10 minutes to disassemble it and cut the hair out with scissors. 3. The beater bar rarely works properly. 4. Cheap plastic accessories, and you have to pay extra for the ones you need. 5. You have to wash the filter by hand by rinsing, squeezing, rinsing, squeezing and letting it dry out for 24 hours. I suppose this could substitute for a trip to the gym 6. Emptying the canister is a mess! You have to do this outside or get major dust blow-back all over your house. Not for apartment dwellers. Then you need a brush to get fine particles out. It never gets clean. It's so much easier to throw away a dust bag than have to deal with the stuff you vacuumed up!
All and all, this vacuum is like a shallow, yet beautiful woman... you'll throw a lot of money at her, you'll be proud to show her off to your friends, but she'll still break your heart.

It sounds like you only cleaned 1 of the 2 filters
June 8, 2014
I also have Dyson canister vac and it works flawlessly. Initially, I was very irritated because after 4 passes it was still pulling out dirt from the carpet. (IE: it's still pulling out dirt that are old vacuum had left there for presumably years) After a 4 days of vacuuming twice per room it stopped picking up dirt after the first pass. But then it stopped picking up much at all. I was cleaning the filter so I didn't understand what was up. There are 2 filters one on the bottom of the unit and one in the side where the wheel is located. After I fully cleaned both and let them dry fully it was back to its old self.

Known Incompatibilities - but no warnings...
By bezimmer from Northern VA
This unit is a replacement for a smaller and older competing model I've owned for years. I bought it based entirely on the good reviews here and it's attractive features. 780W, slim design, Green features, plenty of outlets - very nice package and price. But guess what?
a) You're not allowed to put a surge protector between your device and the Back-Ups (OK, I guess)
b) You're not allowed to put an extension cord between your device and the Back-Ups (huh?)
c) You'd better try and figure out if your computer (yes, your computer) is compatible. I have a high end workstation - big national brand with four letters in its name. Apparently this PC's power supply doesn't tolerate "dirty" power - and by their own admission - APC says this Back-Ups battery power is dirty. (Nice feature for a back up system)
Forget the chat line. Useless. Forget pre-sales technical support. Won't talk to you without an exact APC model number and serial number.
So, here's the deal. All batteries produce DC current. In order to convert that to AC you need something called a rectifier. The rectifier in this Back-Ups produces an AC signal that is described as a "Stepped Approximation to a Sine Wave." Meaning it produces a bunch of little (digital) square waves to try and approximate (fake) a smooth sine wave. The degree of smoothness determines the "cleanliness" of the power. So what?
So I prepared to run a self test once I got everything running and the battery fully charged. I liked the PowerChute software-it told me my load was 325W v. the 780W capacity of the Back-Ups. Plenty of room to spare. Hit go, and the PC's power was interrupted causing it to crash. Didn't expect that. Did a test with just a lamp. Worked fine. Tried the PC twice again with smaller loads - same result. Called to see what give's and was finally told, after much non-sense that certain ****-brand coomputers had power supplies that were intolerant to dirty power and that APC was researching the problem (these computer models are top of the line and their latest and greatest).
I was offered the opportunity to buy a Smart-Ups for hundreds more. No thanks.
Customer service was awful. A real surprise for a company with an otherwise good reputation. My beef is I'm supposed to know that their "Stepped Approximated Sine Wave" is incompatible with my computer. Right. Show me the wave form and maybe I'll figure that out on my own. Face it, they use an el cheapo rectifier. Only the most critical component in that system, next to the battery. No thanks.
Even if your computer tolerates this AC signal I cannot, for a moment, believe it's good for your power supply. As Elmer would have said, "Be verwee, verwee carefuul." Hopefully Best Buy will take this back - APC said I couldn't ship it back to them. Really? Wow! Really.

I've read that Dell has this issue
June 8, 2014
Checked Dell website and they have their own brand of UPS. Seems like Dell has created systems with specific power requirements that can be solved by their branded UPS. Haven't heard of any other PC maker with the same power issue.
Interesting technique on part of Dell for boosting sales by making systems wish specific power requirements.

Reading the directions always helps.
November 30, 2014
With the Dyson came a instruction sheet that showed how to assemble the unit and the basic use. After you press the release to remove the dustbin from the wheel unit you position it just above your trash. Pressing the red button releases the bottom hatch and it will open and the dust hair etc will drop down into the trash. If you filled the bin until the unit would not pickup anymore you may need to tap the side of the bin to get the compacted hair to drop down.

The website to download the drivers isn't intuos..
March 3, 2015
The website to download the drivers for the tablet is http://us.wacom.com/en/support/drivers/
The current link for drivers for OS X 10.8-10.10 is
http://cdn.wacom.com/u/productsupport/drivers/mac/professional/WacomTablet_6.3.11w3.dmg
Putting the above .dmg link in the browser will start the file download of the drivers. Install the drivers and launch the Wacom Desktop Center. Note that this program must be running in the background for the tablet to be usable on a Mac.
Best of luck.

what kind of cable do I need to connect an audiocasette deck to a computer? I want to transfer my audio cassette to cd/dvd.

Depending on your cassette deck. If it is a hi-fi cassette deck it would depend if it has a pre-amp output or if it is a portable cassette deck with only 1 speaker. generally you should be able to use a mono mini or stereo mini plug to a stereo mini plug cord to connect the 2. The mono mini plug end is important if you are only transmitting 1 signal the mono to stero miniplug adapter splits the signal so you get sound from both speakers.

So, I've purchased my MacBook 12" Gold. Beauty, right? Not for long, apparently. There is not a single protective case/cover on the retail market.

MacBook 12" protective cover. Preferable: Speck snap on.
With any new Apple Model it takes a month or 2 before they are able to design and manufacture new cases for products with a new form factor.. Unfortunately, that is the norm for new

Not showing signal on TV. I have checked all connections. The power and the cable connection to TV are ok but "no signal " sign is displayed on TV. the Apple TV is one year old.
Is the power indicator light lit on the apple tv? Is it blinking? try swapping out HDMI cables after you have verified the indicator light is lit and steady Swap out the HDMI cable with a device you have already connected to your TV. Ensure that there is no dust or debris in the hdmi socket of the tv or apple tv, this can cause the connection to fail.

How long will this product lasts

I had my bamboo pen for over 5 years before I cracked the pen (my fault) but with gentle care on a desk and being careful with the pen (the most susceptible part of the device) it should last years. It also helps that this is a pen and touch so even if you were to damage the pen and did not want to replace it the touch functionality would still be available.

Is this tablet worth the money?

I want to know before I buy or save money to buy it. Will it last long?
My original Bamboo tablet I had for the better of 5 years. I have had this tablet for 7 months and it seems very solid, yet it is not something that will survive if it is just being thrown about willy nilly in the bottom of a laptop bag. It's designed for personal/professional use but not careless abuse. That said I wasn't always careful with my bamboo and it still lasted 5 years before the pen ended up cracking from being in the bottom of my laptop case and getting too much pressure on it. The pens are always the most susceptible thing so if you intend on doing any traveling with it get a HARD case to put the pen in when not in use, that will ultimately extend it's lifetime since most people I hear have damaged or lost their pen. So the case gives it a home and a protected environment. Hope that helps.

Is This Tablet Compatible WithThe Wireless Accessory Kit?

It says in the description of this tablet (Model: CTH480) "Optional wireless accessory kit (not included) allows cable-free operation." However when I look at the wireless accessory kit (which is sold seperately) Model: CTH480 is not listed on the accessory kit.

Is the tablet truly compatible with the kit? Thanks in advance!
There is a wireless accessory kit available for the device but it has had mixed reviews. Primarily with regard to lag between pen actions and computer response. Also battery life has been an issue for some.

Does this tablet come with drawing software?

I've seen the Wacom Manga, and I was wondering if this tablet is the same thing or if it also came with software.
It comes with a basic drawing software. The higher line professional wacom tablets come with more substantial software.
