They still have it!

One of the great pop/dance duos off all time are still going strong. It would be wrong to dismiss Pet Shop Boys as another simple dance and techno band. Their music is always better, their lyrics always deeper and more clever, and the results more satisfying than any others in the genre.
This album is fantastic, full of incredibly catchy tunes which easily slide into PSB's catalog. It's not quite as strong as its predecessor, Electric, but that was one of their career highs. The lyrics this time around are a bit simpler, except for the ingenious "The Dictator Decides". I think the first single, "The Pop Kids" is one of the weaker songs on the album actually, though it's still quite good.
I think PSB fans would definitely be satisfied. And new fans would be surprised at just how good dance and pop music can be.

Good movie, few extras.

Seeing this for the first time in ages, it still works as a tight, suspenseful, military thriller. The plot is quite good (I'm still not sure if it's plausible) and the main characters are well developed. It treats you like an adult when you're watching it, not like a bag of adrenaline. There are the stereotypical machismo cliches which seem to be required in all military movies, but they are very brief here.
The acting overall is fine, but Gene Hackman of course steals the show as the intimidating captain. I had forgotten how many other actors who are now recognizable are in this film.
The extras are really lacking for a bluray. There is already an extended cut of this film on a previous DVD. I'm not sure if the deleted scenes included here make up any part of that. The "on-set" feature is just actors clowning around, sometimes working, but it goes on too long. The "behind the scenes" feature is little more than a contemporary, lengthy ad. I still don't know if the story could happen, how the idea came about, what the details and decisions were in making it. The most pointless feature is the "Showcase" which simply jumps to scenes considered the best for the bluray format. It looks as good as any bluray, but as most of the movie takes place on a dark sub, it's really not the best showcase for the format.
I would recommend the movie as a smart, tense action-thriller, but this release needed some more features.
What's great about it: Suspenseful, great plot, great acting.
What's not so great: Few extras.

Efficient, Attractive Camera Bag

It looks as if most larger size camera bags are overpriced and they never go on sale. This bag is for the mid-size (about fist size) cameras. It's not meant for either the slim pocket cams or the very large DSLRs. I got it for my Canon SX500.
It's nice looking with simple lines and muted colors inside and out, with a simple rectangular shape. There are two detachable partitions inside which can be quickly rearranged by velcro to re-size the compartments, a very efficient and clever use of space. There is a large zipped pocket along the top of the bag and another pocket inside along the bottom of the top flap. It includes a very easily attachable, long strap which can hook to one or both sides of the unit. It doesn't take up too much space at all but gives you enough room for your mid-size camera, the camera's own strap, battery charger, spare batteries or memory cards, receipts etc.
A drawback is that there is hardly any cushioning at all. If you drop the camera bag on a hard surface it will not protect the contents much. I doubt that it's waterproof as well. However the thin shell makes for a slimmer bag so it can be taken on trips more easily.
Also it's really too expensive at $20 for what it is, but once you go above the slim pocket cameras, all camera bags are pretty much near this price wherever you look.
So it's probably the best mid-size camera bag BB offers. I'm just taking one star off for the cost and the lack of cushioning.

The original Star Trek, looking/sounding amazing!
on September 15, 2013

The original Star Trek looking and sounding better than I imagined it ever could. I'm often amazed at the intensity of color and the clarity of sound.
I won't go into detail about the content of the show. It's original Star Trek! We all know it. Thoughtful sci-fi for adults with a brilliant premise, incredible characters, mind bending plots. (Most of the time.) I'll instead focus on the bluray's quality and features:
Video:
The image is of course not as clear as recently filmed blurays. But it is still great looking since the series was filmed on 35mm film. There is often deliberate "softness" to the image, due to the style of cinematography at the time to make everything look ethereal and glamorous. But the vast majority of the footage looks brilliant. Also the show was originally lit with a kaleidoscope of color and it is displayed magnificently here.
Audio:
The sound is noticeably better than I've ever heard on original Star Trek. You can catch every word without the static hissing we often hear on older shows.
Special Effects:
The bluray gives you the option of watching each episode with either the original effects, or the updated digital effects, as well as various audio settings. The current DVD editions only provide the new effects. The new effects are not terribly intrusive, but they are not at all consistent either: some shots look great and some look like a demo for a video game.
Special Features:
There are a few nice special features, but for the most part they're lacking for a show this iconic. Most of the features from the original DVD sets have been carried over, except I believe for the text commentaries. Instead we have "Starfleet Access", pop-up picture-in-picture commentaries from the writers and producers, as well as the Okudas, technical advisers to the sequel shows and all around Star Trek historians who wrote the original text commentaries on the DVDs. There is also a pop-up trivia track but for the most part it's quite annoyingly condescending as it's an "in-universe" explanation of some of the show's details. But this is only available on 3 or 4 episodes. There are also a few interviews with the stars and writers recorded in 2004 for the original DVDs. Another new feature is 8mm "behind the scenes" footage captured during the series' filming. One entire disc is devoted just to "The Trouble With Tribbles" and includes an episode of the animated series and a Deep Space Nine episode also dealing with tribbles, as well as a detailed retrospective on the making of that clever DS9 episode.
At the time I bought this Best Buy was offering it for just $29.99, which is less than the DVD version, and less than anywhere else.
