Bad

Talk about a movie with the worst conclusion is history. This movie, literally, does absolutely nothing.
"found footage" movies are coming out of nowhere now. But why the heck does this one have background music? Why does it purposely create "Predator" sounds to give us a false sense of something happening?
The premise was actually pretty good. 5 friends go up to a cabin for a 21st bday, and are stalked by "something" in a van. It follows them around, video tapes them and then.... Hmmm. Maybe kills them? That's the problem. Nothing happens. There is some screaming, some weird noises and some running. But the movie doesn't answer anything. It ends abruptly without anything happening. I have never seen a movie so poorly put together and concluded.
And to add to the crapfest, after the abrupt and bad ending, the credits role. During the credits they show the "killer's" or "evil thing's" camera footage. This, yet again, shows absolutely nothing of importance.
The way I look at it, it's a movie that completely insults me in every way as a viewer. It fills me with false hope, and slaps me in the face at the end.
I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Even if you are a die hard fan of the "found footage" movies like my self, you won't find a single joy in this.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

An amazing horror movie.

Martyrs is a phenomenal horror movie. In a world of boring slashers and horror remakes, we get a fairly original, ultra violent, and freaky movie that stays with you after the last gut-wrenching scene. I can't tell you the last horror movie that literally kept blowing my mind scene after scene and keeps you guessing. If you like horror movies that have a hint of originality, full of gore and one that will knock the cr#p out of you, watch this one.
What's great about it: Interesting characters, fairly original story, great effects and creepy atmosphere.
What's not so great: Those who don't like a lot of violence may find this a turn off.

A solid video game movie

To my surprise, Tekken is actually good. The main thing I look for right away in game movies, are the characters and they were really well represented. Outside of a few characters: Marshal Law, and Christie M (who doesn't use Eddies style like she does in the game) the rest looked and fought just like the game.
The story is a mirror of the Tekken games.
What I've been waiting for is a movie based off a fighting game, that focuses on a fighting tournament. This one does it fairly well. It follows Jin, who is played really well, and has lots of decent fight scenes with loads of violence and cool moves. The fight choreographer is Cyril R(the bald guy from district b13 and b13U)
The budget actually seemed pretty high, with it's awesome costumes and cool style of it's world.
Unfortunately It has an unneeded love interest, and some choppy editing. Some may also feel that some of their favorite characters from the game lose way to fast.
Overall it was a fun movie for all the Tekken fans out there. If you go in with an open mind and ready to have fun, you will have it.
What's great about it: Solid fight scenes, great atmosphere and well represented characters.
What's not so great: some characters are rid of right away. Those familiar with the game may not like its over the top story.

Another "found footage" with a budget.

Grave Encounters takes a different attack at the handy-can style. Where Paranormal constantly builds suspense up until the final climax, Grave Encounters takes a while to start but hits us with a marvelously freaky end 40 min.
The problem with going this route is that we have the characters there to watch and learn about for the first hour. Unfortunately if found the characters to be a mixed bag. Some of them I found unbearable, and some I loved(such as the hilarious "psychic" guy". I can easily say that I enjoyed it a lot, but I wish it built more suspense in the beginning.
When the "action" starts happening, it is done phenomenally. The atmosphere and especially the sound are incredibly freaky. And it does have it's fair share of jump-scares also.
Id definitely check this out if your looking for a believable handy-cam horror movie on close to par with some of the other movies out there. Such as REC and Paranormal 1 & 2.
I'd recommend checking out "The Tunnel" also.

What's great about it: Solid filmaking and effects.
What's not so great: Poor pacing and some people might find it to be over the top.

A solid "found footage" horror movie

Atrocious is another entry into the handy cam style movie. I found it to be really good. The movies run time is about 70 min and I think it works well. This story tells about a family that goes vacationing to an old house they own up in the woods. Half the movie introduces the characters and shows us the real freaky locale of the movie: The woods maze. Most of the beginning shows us the maze during the day time. The last half hour grabs us and doesn't let us go. Taking us through a crazy chase through the maze with nothing but out imagination going wild as to what this "thing" is.
The ending is awesome. Believable, scary and freakishly filmed.
The movie spends most of it's night scenes using the night vision mode on the camera.
Unfortunately the movie is extremely dark at times, and it is hard to make out what's on the screen sometimes. Also those with a light stomach may finds it's shaky camera unbearable. The movie also uses a lot of camera "tricks" to avoid showing something revealing
Overall I enjoyed it a lot. The ending was really good and unexpected but the movie suffers some poor editing and a sporadic pace

A great idea but a major let down.

When I first saw the trailer to The Silent House I was pretty excited. Supposedly the entire movie was done in one shot. I can't say if that is entirely true, but I can say that it definitely looked that way. There was not a single cut on the entire movie. Or at least a noticeable one. Only when the movie is pitch black could I possibly believe it was cut.
The movie is about daughter and father that are staying the night at a house, which does not happen to have electricity, and bad things happen!
The thing that The Silent House has going for it, outside of how brilliantly it is filmed, is the setting. The house that they are in is beyond creepy and you truly feel immersed due to its haunting atmosphere and how well its filmed.
But unfortunately it suffers from a wide array of problems. The pacing is unexceptionally slow at times. For it's 80 min run time, I'd say about 60 min is of our protagonist looking around the house with a hand torch. Now I feel that this could have been a great opportunity for the filmmakers to do a lot. But unfortunately it gets very boring, very quickly. Since the movie has very little dialogue, we need to rely on the protagonist. She was great in the beginning but I felt she was losing interest and her performance felt unreal during the last third.
When the movie starts to pick up at points during her constant searching, the filmmakers rely much to heavily on horror cliches and random jump scares as opposed to bringing in some originality to it's great concept.
I was willing to give this a positive review up until the ending. The ending was unoriginal and absolutely impossible. Not only are there an endless amount of plot holes, but the reason behind it was not fully explained.
I for one found the camera work to be amazing especially with the movie's concept, but felt it was strongly let down due to it's frustratingly slow pacing and atrocious ending.
What's great about it: The Camera work and atmosphere.
What's not so great: The Pacing, ending, and acting.
