Uncomfortable, minimal noise cancelling

I liked the functionality, but could not get a comfortable combination of ear pieces. Noise cancelling was not good enough to pay the extra money. Returned them for a non-noise cancelling product for a 3rd the price and more comfortable for my fit.

I am interested in noise cancellation feature. Can the headphones be used without connecting to a music source. Do they need music to activate the sound reduction?

The noise cancelling was non existent without music playing. And very minimal when music was on. I returned these since I was looking for good noise cancelling.
