Temporarily useful but can be annoying
on September 29, 2019
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Small and light
* Charging via USB-C
* Effortless pairing with BTLE
* Nice app with helpful prompts and hints
* Convenient storage tray for unit and extra sticky pads
Cons:
* Not something you’ll use often after initial training
* Can be very annoying while in use
My Review:
Most of us unknowingly slouch… a lot… without realizing it. This tends to cause back pain or other problems that again, we didn’t know could be easily helped by sitting or standing up straight. That’s where the Upright Go 2 comes in. It can make you more aware when you’re slouching and correct that behavior over time. You can also just wear it to remind you not to slouch (but probably won’t).
This tiny, lightweight unit charges up over USB-C and easily pairs to your phone over BTLE. Starting out you just wear it for short periods of time to train your awareness of your posture. After that, you can wear it all day to remind you when you’re slouching. The battery should last about 30 hours of use between charges but keep in mind that it’s not really designed to be worn while you’re sweating or wet so no gym use, no swimming, and definitely no wearing in the shower or out in the rain ;-)
The little pod comes with a pack of reusable and replaceable sticky pads so that you can adhere it on the top part of your back where you can comfortably reach. The app is really nice to get you started and make you more aware of your posture. The problem that I noticed while using and training with it was that I rarely sat or stood still while “in training.” I’d bend over to get something or tilt forward to reach for something and the unit would buzz at me to stop slouching even though I wasn’t. This was annoying as I’d really try to maintain my posture but got “corrected” when I was just doing something normal that wasn’t actually slouching.
Anyway, this little training device can really help if you’re prone to poor posture. After you’ve raised your awareness of this bad posture, though, the device is not incredibly useful. You probably will not end up wearing it regularly - especially after your training is over. So you get that benefit of the training and then leave it in a drawer until your bad habits drift back and you need a refresher course.
If the training aspects seem useful to you, then this device can definitely help you be more aware of bad posture and help you get in the habit of sitting or standing up straight. Once you get that benefit, the device probably will start gathering dust…. unless you can gift it to someone else who might need it.

Excellent Print Quality and Speed, Silent
on September 29, 2019
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Great print quality for a color laser printer
* Fast printouts
* Easy to set up for wireless printing (Mac, iOS tested)
* Nearly silent while printing
* Included toner prints a lot of pages
Cons:
* Larger than average might not fit everywhere
* WiFi or USB - no wired ethernet
* Doesn’t duplex
* Expensive consumables
My Review:
This is a really great value for a color laser printer. Print quality is what one would expect for a modern color laser printer, and it was faster than some other brands that I’ve tried. But what surprised me most was how quiet it is! Other laser printers have clicks and whirs while feeding the paper, but this Brother printer just silently spits out finished pages.
Set up was as easy as one could expect. Unbox the beast (over 40 pounds of heft) and remove all of the blue tape and orange protective plastic bits. Add paper. Go through the on-unit wireless setup wizard to select an access point and (laboriously) enter the network key. Done.
Next step was getting my Mac to use the printer. This, too, was easy. Select to add a printer, choose the Brother unit from the list and done. You can optionally download the full driver package from the Brother web site listed on the setup poster to get more printing options.
Last was printing from my iPhone and iPad; both recognized the printer on my network via AirPrint and worked without fuss.
The tabletop footprint is on the larger side, and it doesn’t help that the power cord comes out of the back and needs additional depth on a counter. This printer definitely commands space on a desk or shelf.
This is Brother’s more basic unit so it has a simple one-line LCD display with buttons rather than a touchscreen, there’s no Ethernet adapter for wired networking and there’s no duplexing. If you’re OK with these limitations, then this is a great value option for you!
Sadly, as with nearly all printers these days, the cost of replacing the bundled toner (or ink in the case of ink-jet printer), far exceeds the cost of the unit’s original purchase. This printer’s bundled toner is good for about 1000 pages after which it costs nearly twice the original price of the printer to replace all four with new ones. While not ecologically correct, it’s typically cheaper to replace the printer (and get another set of bundled toner or ink), than it is to keep the printer and replace just the toner or ink.
Overall, this is a great color laser printer for home or small office use. As long as WiFi connectivity works for you and you don’t need to duplex, this printer will serve you well for a lot of prints.

Great Value for Style, Sound and Battery Life
on September 8, 2019
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Amazing battery life (30+ hours)
* Good Sound for Music Listening
* Compact and lightweight
* Convenient control knob
Cons:
* Mids are overshadowed by punchy bass and high treble
* Beeps instead of voice prompts
My Review:
First off - these are what I would call “value” headphones - they aren’t the cheapest you can get, but there are many options at higher prices points, too. For their price, they really deliver. You can literally listen all day (24-hours straight) and then still have battery leftover for the next day. They are relatively light and comfortable for on-ear headphones, too.
Sound is good with punchy bass and tight treble, but is definitely a little shallow on the mids. Depending on your choice of genre, these will most likely sound good for you. Spoken word (audiobooks, etc) are not where these headphones shine but music sounds great.
The only control on the headphones is a single 5-way joystick-like button. Push in to turn them on/off, accept phone calls, invoke a voice assistant or play/pause. Slide up/down for volume and left/right for track controls. Overall, I really like this - it’s easy to find blind while you’re wearing them and works great. My only complaint is that while many other brands are going with a nice voice to indicate various actions, these stick with simple beeps.
There is a micro USB port for charging and an novel bi-directional 3.5mm headphone jack. Plug one end of a 3.5mm cable into the headphones and either plug the other end into a source to use these headphones wired (instead of Bluetooth or when your battery does eventually die). But, you can instead connect that same free cable end into someone else’s wired headphones to “share the music” if you’re listening wirelessly. I’m sure it’d look weird to have two people sit near each other with a wire connecting their respective headphones, but it’s a novel use of that port when listening wirelessly.
The materials are nice for a value headset - not leather, but supple and easy to clean. The ear pads are easily removable to swap out with new ones, too, with current pricing at a reasonable $22/pair. The provided power and audio cables are really nice.
Overall, these are great headphones for the money with good sound, great battery life, nice controls and that classic “Marshall” retro style. I would like a slightly more balanced sound stage, but these are otherwise highly recommended if you’re looking for on-ear wireless headphones with a lot of value for the price.

Tiny, Light, Fast, Secure
on August 24, 2019
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Much smaller and lighter than expected.
* Easy to carry for extra on-the-go storage.
* Comes with both USB-A (standard) and USB-C cables.
* Pre-formatted for best use on a Mac (Mac OS Extended (Journaled))
Cons:
* Since it’s pre-formatted for the Mac, it can’t easily be used with other systems unless reformatted.
My Review:
I was genuinely surprised at how small and light this external hard drive is. I have the 2TB version and it is literally about 2/3 the size of my iPhone XS (although a tad thicker). I have an older Seagate hard drive that is thinner but it’s only 750GB and I trust my data to Western Digital a LOT more than I do to Seagate.
The drive has a standard USB-3 port and comes with two short cables; one has USB-A (the typical USB connector) and the other has a USB-C (the newer connector). There is a small white LED on the drive to tell you when it’s working, but otherwise it’s just a semi-stylish box that you can carry around to supplement your Mac’s storage.
For what it's worth - this drive won't work (as is) with a new iPad Pro running iOS 12.4 via USB-C. It may work with iOS 13 or if you re-format the drive, but out of the box it doesn't work with the latest iPad Pros.
It also comes with some software utilities that seem kinda nice. Not much else to say - fast, small, light, reliable, and easy to use.

Comfortable, Great Range, Sound Great
on August 4, 2019
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Very comfortable to wear for long sessions.
* Sound great with tons of customization options.
* Convenient recharging base station.
Cons:
* Missing some of the audio feedback that other brands do.
My Review:
I work from home for a tech company and spend a good portion of my day on Skype calls. While this is advertised as a great gaming headset, it also is awesome for PC use with Skype calls or other video conferencing. The headset is comfortable to wear for long periods of time and the swing-up boom microphone is convenient for going silent during a call - for bathroom breaks or other reasons.
There are a ton of audio customization options in the provided Astro Command Center software for Windows/Mac. There are even a few buttons on the headset itself to adjust the Game/Voice balance, the overall volume, the audio source and even the EQ settings.
So far, the range has been excellent as has been the battery life. The wireless communication box doubles as a drop-in charger so whenever you’re not wearing the headset, you just drop it on the charger which keeps it topped off for the next use.
My only small complaints are a few “niceties” that other brands have such as audio feedback when muting/unmuting the microphone, etc… With this headset, if you rotate the microphone boom up, it mutes the audio, but you get no feedback so you don’t really know if the microphone was muted. With other similar headsets, rotating up the boom mic also mutes it, but the headset either says “Microphone muted” with a voice in the headset to confirm, or at least has a beep to signify that an action happened. Same for unmuting. I tried suggesting to these feature requests to the manufacturer and gave up after 4 attempts of them not reading my request and instead just saying that rotating up the boom mic mutes the audio.
Anyway, this is a solid headset for gaming, PC audio calls and even movie and music playback. The battery life is great, the range is more than you’ll probably need, and the drop-in charger is really convenient. I can’t quite give it a perfect 5-star rating but it’s ][ this close.

Huge Canvas, Clear Image, Good Connectivity
on June 27, 2019
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Huge Screen
* Lots of pixels to work with
* Attractive design (case, stand, etc.)
* Good connectivity options
* VESA mount and desk stand included
Cons:
* Not 4k/UHD, but still great.
* Limited stand adjustments
* Bulky power brick
My Review:
The laptop I use for work has a built-in 15” Full HD (1080p) screen. This is nice, but when I’m not traveling, it’s a huge benefit to connect a second monitor. I used to expand my desktop onto an external 22” 1080p monitor for more screen real estate. Its really helpful to have the extra space.
A brief explanation of monitor resolutions, because QHD might sound the same as 4k, but it’s not. Technically, the bare minimum to be considered HD is 720p (1280x720). “Full HD” is what is commonly referred to as 1080p (1920x1080). This HP monitor is QHD which means 4 x HD so its resolution is 2560x1440 or 3.7 MP, versus 4k which is 4 x Full HD which is 3840x2160 or 8.3 MP.
Anyway, I digress. This HP monitor may not be 4k, but its huge 32” screen is a great canvas for getting work done, among other things. It makes more of a difference than you might think. I do design work on my laptop, and being able to not only have multiple things open but to have them open with large enough windows to see detail, is awesome!
I can’t say anything about gaming on this monitor, but for work purposes (spreadsheets, design work, etc.) it is amazing.
The provided desk stand does its job well enough, but does nothing but tilt; no rotation around the base and the screen cannot rotate to portrait (tall versus wide). It does come with a VESA mount that replaces the desktop stand so you can mount it to a wall or monitor arm, though.
I won’t get into the connectivity options because you can read that in the specs. I have it connected to my HP laptop with the provided HDMI cable and everything works great.
Aside from the limited stand adjustments, the only other small thing I could negatively mention is that the slim bezel and case design does not have a built-in AC adapter. Instead, it has an external power brick that is quite large but not too bad if you’re using this on a desk. Just keep in mind that the power cable coming from the monitor does have a huge rug bump in the middle ;-)
Anyway, this is a really great monitor for its specs. As long as you understand that it is QHD (as advertised) which is NOT 4k or UHD, you’ll be happy with this huge and clear monitor.

More comfortable, Easier Set Up and Clearer Images
on June 16, 2019
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Much more comfortable on my head and face.
* More compatible with those who wear glasses.
* Clearer optics; although not night-and-day.
* Much easier to set up.
* More convenient audio.
Cons:
* New controllers aren’t as comfortable to hold and use.
* Audio is not as robust.
* A modest but not major upgrade over the original.
I’ve been enjoying the original Oculus Rift for about a year and decided to upgrade when this new model was available. The original was great but had some fairly significant flaws; most namely that it required at least 4 connections to your PC; 2 from the headset and one from each of 2 cameras that sense the position of the headset in space. If you wanted room-scale sensing, you’d need a 3rd camera which brings the total to 5 connections to your PC. Unless you have a dedicated PC and play space, this is a lot of cable management; not to mention needing to leave least 3 cameras set up in the right spots in your play space.
While this Oculus Rift S is not a major upgrade over the original, it does improve upon the original in a few crucial areas. The cameras for the room-scale sensing are now built into the headset, so that not only eliminates 3 cables that needed to be plugged in to your PC, but also means that you don’t need to leave 3 cameras positioned in your room. It also enables the cool pass-through video when you get near your play space boundary (that’s easy to set up).
The harness that balances the typically front-heavy VR headset is also much improved and is now much easier to adjust for comfort and stability. It also is much more forgiving for those who wear glasses.
The A/V portion of VR; the audio and video, has been improved a bit as well, although with compromises. Image clarity is definitely better, but it was pretty good already. For audio, the original Rift had attached on-ear headphones that articulated and needed to be positioned over your ears each time you put the headset on. This new Rift S has the audio built into the headband which is much more convenient but the sound isn’t quite as rich. You can attach wired headphones instead, but the built-in audio is just not as good, although it is more convenient.
The last thing worth mentioning is the new controllers. They are definitely good but not quite as comfortable for me to hold on to as the original. I prefer the comfort of the old controllers to the new, but they work well enough and I’m sure I’ll get used to them.
Overall, if you don’t already own a Rift, the Rift S is definitely the one worth getting. And if you already own the Rift, the Rift S is still a worthwhile upgrade if you find yourself sharing your play space with others or if you don’t have enough ports on your PC so you need to constantly swap plugs when you want to get into VR. Having only 2 plugs and not needing separate cameras is a HUGE improvement, IMHO, that makes it much easier to jump into VR whenever you want.

Easy Typing, Protective Case, Convenient Features
on June 8, 2019
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Great typing!
* Good battery life on a charge.
* Useful iOS shortcut keys.
* Convenient Apple Pencil features.
* Durable protection for your iPad Pro and Apple Pencil.
Cons:
* Bigger and heavier than iPad manufacturer’s version.
* Separate battery to keep charged.
* Not very easy to swap in and out of the case.

On its own merits, this is a great keyboard case for your iPad Pro.
The main reason to get this one is if you have a need to type a lot. The key travel, sizing and spacing make for accurate typing given its footprint that matches your iPad. The backlit keys are a nice touch (pun intended) as it does make it a lot easier to type in low-light conditions. And if that’s not enough, there’s a row of helpful iOS shortcut keys for media playback, volume adjustment, etc..
The other half of this product is a protective case for your iPad with full corner protection as well as coverage for the back. The case part accommodates the 2nd gen Apple Pencil while it’s docked on the iPad for charging. There is a strap that not only secures the case/keyboard closed but also holds the Apple Pencil in place so it won’t get bumped off in transit.
This keyboard connects to your iPad over Bluetooth and has a built-in rechargeable battery. There’s a USB-C charging port and the battery supposedly lasts for up to 3 months of typical use. Another nice touch is that the keyboard turns on automatically when the case is opened to the easel position and turns off when the case is closed. The Bluetooth connection is fast and stable and the one-time pairing is easy.
I wouldn’t necessarily get this case if you just want protection for your iPad with occasional keyboard use. This one excels for those who type a lot as the keyboard is really comfortable for its size.
I also own the Smart Keyboard Folio (not by logitech). The Smart Keyboard Folio is a lot thinner since the key travel is very shallow and it uses that connection on the back of the iPad so it doesn’t need a battery or charging. The iPad magnetically mounts to it so its easy to swap out the Folio for a plain (non-keyboard case) but that also means that it’s not very good at protecting your iPad against drops. That’s all great, but typing on it is not easy (at least for me). Also, the Apple Pencil can dock on the top edge while in the Smart Folio case, but there is nothing preventing the Pencil from popping off accidentally and there is no side protection for your iPad.
Overall, the logitech Slim Folio Pro may be a bit thicker and need charging, but it’s a much more complete case, has thoughtful touches to keep your Apple Pencil from getting lost while in transit, and most importantly, is a much better typing experience. This is a great way to stay mobile and still type a lot without carrying too much bulk.

Slim, Integrated Popsocket, Durable
on June 4, 2019
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Solid construction.
* Durable enough for basic protection of phone and screen.
* Slim, minimal design even with the Popsocket installed.
* Integrated Popsockets connect easily and securely.
Cons:
* Compatibility with wireless chargers is hit-or-miss.

I generally prefer ultra-slim cases that provide mostly just scratch protection, but occasionally I need more. When I do, I temporarily swap out my ultra-thin case for something a bit more substantial. This Otter+Pop case is a really nice compromise between a minimalist design that doesn’t add too much bulk yet adds a lot more protection against drops and screen mishaps.
Plus, it has the added advantage of an integrated Popsocket, well, socket. I see a lot of people around with Popsockets attached to their phones or cases, but this one is really nice is that they are removable for times when you don’t want the additional bulk or want to swap out your style. Even when attached, though, the case is still slim enough to slide into a pocket without snagging the edge of the Popsocket.
The only disadvantage is that while they claim that the case is compatible with most wireless chargers, it’s hit-or-miss as to whether your phone will charge with the Popsocket installed on the case. I have 4 wireless chargers in my home from various manufacturers and in various styles (flat, angled, vertical, etc..) and my iPhone XS only charged on 2 of them with the Popsocket installed on the case. It’s relatively easy to remove the Popsocket but it’s more inconvenient than anything if you need to remove it to charge the phone and then put it back on when done charging.
Overall, this is a nice case and the integrated Popsocket is a convenient feature. I do frequent opportunity charging on various wireless pads, so I doubt I will keep the case installed full-time, but it’s nice to know that when I need the extra protection, this case will do most of what I need without adding much bulk.

Secure, Easy, Flexible
on May 17, 2019
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Solid construction.
* Easy to install and set up.
* Flexible use; Bluetooth, WiFi, fingerprint, PIN code, physical key, etc..
* Comprehensive app.
* Great battery life with emergency backup option.
Cons:
* Fingerprint sensor on side is not easy for left hands.
* Cannot easily see lock status visually from inside.

This deadbolt replacement lock is seriously well-built. While not simple to install, it was as easy as could be expected with the provided instructions, videos, templates and even labeled bags of parts. Installation was what would be expected for any similar replacement of an existing deadbolt with a new one.
There are 3 major parts to set up; the lock itself, the magnetic door sensor and the WiFi hub. Only the lock is required, but the rest of the stuff enables app control and the ability to know whether the door is open or closed. Setup of the WiFi hub and the door sensor are done with the assistance of the app since both are useful only if you’re going to use the app or integrate with voice assistants/home automation.
Once everything is set up, the lock works great! You have 4 way you can lock/unlock the door:
1. PIN Code: The PIN code option is this lock’s most unique feature. Most keypads get either worn out or have rub/dirt patterns for the digits that are used most often. Potential thieves can sometimes decipher your pin code just by looking at what numbers are dirty or worn out as those are used most often. Some even spy on you when you’re pressing the digits and thus can see what buttons you’re pressing to learn your code. That’s where Lockly is so great! The buttons you press are on-screen (easy to clean and won’t wear out) plus they randomize their positions so spies can’t figure out your code just by watching.
2. Fingerprint: Not unique to Lockly, but still well-done and convenient. Tap your registered finger on the reader pad and the door unlocks - that’s it! During setup of this feature, you can name your registered finger and that name is even shown in the logs for how and when the door was unlocked!
3. App/Voice control: You can lock/unlock via the app or if you set it up; via Alexa or Google integration.
4. Key: If the above fails or you’re just feeling old-school, you can use the provided metal key. No fun, but works even if the batteries are dead.
Speaking of dead batteries; if the batteries do die and you don’t have the key handy, just find a 9V battery and touch it to the terminals under the lock (on the outside of the door) to give it enough of a charge to unlock with any of the other methods. Once inside, you can then swap out the AA batteries.
There really are only two minor suggested improvements I have for this near-perfect lock:
The fingerprint sensor is on the right side of the lock. While this is fairly convenient for unlocking with your right hand; not so much for your left hand. I’d be happier if they moved the sensor to the top (and slanted down toward the front to keep any water from pooling on it).
The app is useful for knowing when the door is locked or unlocked. If you’re inside, it’s sometimes just faster and more convenient to look at the thumb latch on the inside of the door. If the latch is vertical, the deadbolt is locked; if horizontal - it’s unlocked. This would be a lot easier if there were any visible contrast between the latch and the inside part of the lock. As it is now; both are the same color so it’s nearly impossible to just look at the inside part of the lock to determine if it’s locked or unlocked.
Otherwise, everything is rock-solid. The app works reliably, the features are easy to use and very flexible, and the lock itself is solidly constructed. This lock may be overkill for some; but most will appreciate its many features.

The Nest Doorbell is the battery-powered video doorbell that works with any home. See what’s happening at your door from anywhere and get intelligent alerts about important activity, like when there’s a person, package, animal, or vehicle.* And because there are no wires, you can install it yourself. Nest Doorbell requires the Google Home app and a Google Account – it’s not compatible with the Nest app or the home.nest.com site.

Where can I buy a replacement battery? How much does the replacement battery cost?

The internal battery is not replaceable by the customer. You have to remove the whole doorbell from the mounting bracket using the supplied metal "key", bring it inside and plug it in to recharge it... about every 2-3 months.

Organizing financial paperwork and accurately processing piles of messy receipts and invoices can be a challenge. The Epson RapidReceipt RR-600W desktop scanner was specifically designed to quickly scan stacks of invoices and receipts of varying sizes, then automatically and accurately process the information into smart digital assets. With the included Epson ScanSmart financial software, you can turn stacks of unorganized receipts and invoices into categorized digital data that easily integrates into applications such as QuickBooks, TurboTax and more1. Plus, create searchable/editable PDFs with the included bonus software. Do it all with zero subscription fees. Featuring smart technology, this scanner learns from each receipt scanned ̶ recognizing more data and logos over time, ensuring receipts and invoices are accurately converted and categorized. And, it’s all done on your own device, giving you complete control over your data, where it’s stored and how it is used. It’s the easy, cost effective way to organize and manage your finances.

Does it extract receipt information into software that can be sent to quickbooks online?

It claims to, although I'm not a QuickBooks user so I cannot verify. The box clearly states that it does this, tough.

Has anyone been able to get the game/chat balancer working properly? I have looked everywhere for a solid solution and have not been able to get it working or find a working example. the game/chat balancer for me makes ALL sounds quieter or louder.

As near as I can tell, this balances the audio between the TOSLINK (optical) input on the USB puck and the audio coming from the USB connection. If you're not using the TOSLINK input, then the switch will basically be useless. Hope this helps.
