Quiet, reliable and useful.
on November 7, 2018

Pros:
* Quieter operation than most competitors.
* Enough suction power to clean most floors.
* Slim design fits under most furniture.
* WiFi connection and comprehensive and useful app.
Cons:
* A tad cumbersome to set up on WiFi.
* Relatively small brush roll.
* No room mapping.

I have had numerous robotic vacuums since they first came out. In general, the higher-priced ones are worth the extra money because they either have better navigation systems (work more reliably), have better suction (clean better) or have useful extra features (automatic docking, scheduling, etc.).
This DEEBOT is a great value because it is what I would call an economy robotic vacuum based on its price, but but compares more favorably to the models at the high end of the price spectrum in terms of features.
There is no fancy laser or camera-based guidance system, but it reliably cleaned several rooms without bouncing into too many things. I would call that good enough. The brush rollers on the bottom are on the small side (narrow vacuum path) but it seems to get the job done well enough - another win for the DEEBOT. In fact, it’s quieter than most while still working well.
This unit has WiFi and app capability. Setup was more time-consuming and confusing than I would have expected, but once set up it works well. Be sure to select the correct app (for iOS use “ECOVACS” and not “ECOVACS HOME” at the time of this review) as there are two available but only one works with this model.
The included infrared remote control does a lot but the built-in scheduling in the remote is basic - repeated cleaning every day is the only option. In the app, however; you can easily set up more useful patterns for weekly cleaning like every Tuesday and Thursday, etc…
So far, I have not once witnessed an issue with this bot getting lost or stuck. Every time it has ended up on its charging dock as expected with a full dust bin.
While this DEEBOT may not have the brand name recognition of some of its more expensive competitors, it works well and cost much less. I would recommend giving this bot a try first rather than jumping on one of the pricier models from the other guys.

Comfortable, Flexible and Fully-Featured
on October 19, 2018

from South Florida
Pros:
* Comfortable hand position.
* Compatible with Unifying receiver and Bluetooth.
* Compatible with Options settings software.
* Long-life rechargeable battery.
* USB-C charging or wired connection with provided cable.
* Attractive design.
Cons:
* Takes a bit of getting used to.
* The Back/Forward button is a bit of a stretch for my smaller hand.
* Right-handed use only might be more uncomfortable for left-handed users.

I don’t (yet) have any wrist issues that prevent me from using a “normal” mouse, but figured it would be best to avoid them nonetheless. My normal mouse is a Logitech MX Master 2S and I really like the features and functions of it. The MX Vertical is a closely-related sibling in that it has similar connectivity and uses the same Logitech Options software for settings. This mouse can connect wirelessly to either the provided Logitech Unifying dongle or to Bluetooth and can store 3 separate connections that you can toggle between with a simple button on the bottom. You can also use the provided recharging cable to connect the mouse with wired USB instead of wireless.
The built-in rechargeable battery seems to last forever, but when you’re ready for a recharge, the mouse has a USB-C port instead of the now-antiquated MicroUSB - no more tri-state connection. It also comes with the necessary cable just in case you need one.
The hand position is really comfortable in what they refer to as a “handshake” orientation, but t does take a bit of getting used to. Normally, you’d angle your wrist left/right to position the cursor preceisely but with this mouse it’s more of an up/down motion of your wrist. Not bad - just different.
There are the usual left/right click mouse buttons and a nicely-weighted scroll wheel as you’d expect. In addition, there’s a long bar by your thumb that’s defaulted to back/forward, and a button on top to toggle between two pointer speeds so you can have a faster speed for gross pointer positioning and a slower speed for more precise positioning.
Overall, this is a well-built, comfortable mouse that hopefully will prevent a lot of wrist-related injuries by rotating your mousing hand to a more natural position. Keep in mind that this is a right-hand mouse only. By the way, the box has a neat cut-out so you can try it on for size and shape without taking anything out of the box - a nice touch!

Comfortable, Stable, Great Sound and Connection
on October 9, 2018
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Solid connection between earbuds and phone.
* Comfortable and stable fit.
* Great battery life both in the buds and the charging case.
* Good, clear sound.
* Ability to hear surroundings without taking buds out or pushing buttons.
* On-bud controls for basics like volume and track selection.
Cons:
* Volume doesn’t get really loud.
* Slightly awkward touch controls for left bud.
* Slightly annoying left/right positional swap in charging case.

I have used many true wireless earbuds and its a given that they all have compromises in design or features. These buds, however; are the most balanced in those terms for me. The built-in ear hooks make them look a tad larger than some other models, but the hooks work great to keep the buds firmly in/on your ears so they don’t fall out during a run or workout without the need for replacement tips with different sizes of stabilizing pieces.
On the right bud is a clicky button to do the usual; play/pause, track up/down, invoke voice assistance, etc.. On the left bud, however; is a clicky button that also has a touch-sensitive surface. While the right bud’s button is actually clicked, the left button is mostly just touched quickly (volume up) or touched briefly (volume down) as the click doesn’t do anything by default. You can customize that behavior in the app, though but doing so eliminates the ability to change the volume from the buds.
One of the main advertising features of these buds is that they allow situational awareness by not intentionally sealing in your ears and blocking all outside sound. This is great for being able to know what’s going on around you, but the side effect is that these buds just don’t have the “oomph” or bass of other models. Sound quality is quite clear and good given the limitation of not having powerful bass. For my tastes, the volume doesn’t quite get loud enough- I usually have them set for almost the max volume and they sound “normal” for my workouts. Of course, your mileage may vary, but don’t expect these buds to drown your ears in loud music or deep bass.
The battery life is really good for true wireless buds at about 5 hours before needing to put them back in the nice charging/carrying case. The case is better than most in that the buds securely snap in and the case has a zipper to keep it closed and the buds situated while charging. Some competing models sometimes pop open during transport allowing the buds to discharge so they are drained when you get where you’re going. My slight complaint about the case, though, is that the left bud stores on the right side and the right on the left side. Normally you take the buds out with one in each hand but in this case, the buds are in the swapped hands for wearing. Not major, but something to notice.
In 10 hours of use at my local gym, the left bud lost connectivity with the right one just once and almost instantly resumed connection. The right bud never lost connection to the phone (iPhone XS).
Overall, these are great earbuds for working out! They’ve got the goods where it counts; connectivity, battery life, secure fit and a really nice charging case. The sound isn’t the best I’ve heard but it’s no slouch, either. I’d highly recommend these buds for anyone who values their soundtrack while working out.

Good Sound. Poor Design.

Sound good. Mic picks up speech nicely without having to jam the mic boom in your mouth. Can charge and use at the same time if the battery isn't ready for use. The color effects add a nice touch but are only noticeable to others around you, if anyone, and do not do much for the person wearing the headset.
The headset is somewhat heavy and can get uncomfortable due to the strength of spring. There doesn't seem to be a way to adjust the tension or fit aside from raising and lowering the ear cups. Otherwise, these would be great headphones.
I would only recommend these to friends with small heads due to the lack of fit adjustment.

Light and Precise Gaming Mouse

This is a well-designed mouse that is comfortable to use for an extended period. The buttons work well and provide good tactile feedback on clicks. The battery charges quickly and lasts a long time.
The mouse tracks very well with no stuttering or mis-tracking.
However; if you're looking for a heaver or adjustable weight mouse, this is not the one for you. But otherwise a good easy to use gaming mouse.

Compact yet fully-featured desktop scanner
on September 23, 2018
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Compact size - fits nearly anywhere.
* Input ADF transforms into something useful.
* Business card scanning is easy.
* Comprehensive settings and scan-to destinations.
* Wireless connectivity to mobile devices, networked computers or email recipients.
* High-quality and speedy color and duplexed scans.
Cons:
* Compact size implies battery use but needs its AC adapter.
* Some on-screen touch buttons are too small for finger access.
* Missing some useful touchscreen customization options.

This compact, fully-featured ADF scanner does just about everything that bigger models do but in a fraction of the desk space. The transforming ADF can handle most paper sizes and there’s even a special slot for business cards to both insert and eject from the front. It scans quickly in color or grayscale and can do both sides of the page simultaneously.
The unit has two USB ports for wired connectivity; one to connect to a computer (Mac or PC) and a separate one to scan directly to a USB memory drive. Both work well and easily, but the unit has built-in WiFi that enables it to scan to or scan from networked computers and even mobile devices like iOS and Android phones and tablets on the same wireless network. You can even set it up to access an SMTP server (like a free one from Gmail) to send scans to an email address without the need to install anything on the receiving end.
Everything worked well and was easy to set up; just get the scanner on your wireless network and install either the computer app/drivers or the mobile device app and you’re ready to go.
The top cover closes over the unit to protect the screen and buttons and also keeps the size compact when not needed for scanning. Opening the top cover is like a scene out of a Transformers movie. with numerous adjustable paper guides and supports that do their respective jobs well.
A few of my small nits on this otherwise-great unit - the resistive touchscreen works, but some of the buttons are not easily to press with a finger. For example, the onscreen QWERTY keyboard used to type in email addresses is an exercise in frustration with a typical finger. Most things can be set up in the apps or by pointing any web browser to the unit’s IP address to use the built-in web-based settings. You can even enter frequently used email addresses for selection on the unit rather than having to type them in each time.
Although not the unit’s intent, the compact size almost implies that it would be truly portable and have a built-in battery. This unit is not advertised as such so you can’t really complain. It needs the included AC power adapter to work. It’s easy to move around and doesn’t take up a lot of desk space, but it is not a truly wireless and portable scanner.
My last nit is a small recommendation for improvement - the home screen has big buttons for scanning destinations like scanning to a computer or scanning to email. While you can set up “shortcuts” and go to them, you can’t reorder or remove those main destinations to make the home screen customized. I will probably scan to email often, but it will always be on the 2nd “page” of home buttons rather than being on the primary home screen.
Overall, this is a fully-featured and well-rounded compact desktop scanner that does everything the bigger ones do but in a fraction of the size. The wired and wireless options work well and as long as you’re not expecting a battery-powered scanner, it will do everything you need without reserving a huge spot on your desk.

Great Sound, Great Battery Life, Cool Retro Design
on September 1, 2018
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Clear sound that gets loud yet stays clear.
* Great battery life.
* Convenient and useful analog sound control knobs.
* Compact yet powerful.
Cons:
* Volume knob is independent of volume on music device (phone, etc.).
* No local playback controls (play/pause, skip, etc..)
* No microphone for voice calls/voice assistant.
* Charging via provided AC power cord and not the more standard USB charging.
This compact, portable speaker has a TON going for it. It’s definitely designed to be a portable music speaker and not a general-purpose speaker in that it doesn’t have a microphone and there are no local controls for play/pause, voice assistant, etc… What it does do, it does exceedingly well. First and foremost, it sounds great! Clear highs and powerful bass. There are even analog knobs on the top to adjust the bass and treble to your liking.
The battery life is excellent, too, with a really nice LED battery level display. This speaker has a good weight to it; heavy enough to imply quality construction and solid innards, yet light enough to carry around by the swanky (and removable) black/red leather carrying strap. There are rubber feet ensure that it won’t mar any surface its on and keep the shaking bass from rattling anything but your ears.
The cool retro styling is a hallmark of the Marshall line of music equipment. The analog knobs, the corner bumpers and the Marshall logo all say “Music-focused.” There’s a 3.5mm aux in jack for those who want a wired connection instead of Bluetooth.
My few complaints are really minor in an otherwise great speaker. Most speakers of this type have local volume buttons that essentially control the output volume of the device that is playing the music (phone, tablet, etc.). The knob on this speaker is fully independent, though. It adjust the volume of the speaker regardless of the volume of the music device. Since most bluetooth devices send a variable rather than line-out volume, you’ll most likely just max out the volume of the phone and adjust the speaker’s volume as you like. This can be a tad confusing and maybe even a bit of an issue if you do end up setting your phone’s volume high and then disconnecting the speaker. Anyway - it’s not a big deal, but something to keep in mind.
Also, most speakers of this type have a standard USB cable for charging. Probably due to this speaker’s large battery, there’s a built-in AC adapter and a provided AC power cord instead. The cord is removable and the power socket on the speaker is normally covered by a rubber flap to keep moisture out. At least there’s no power adapter (rug bump or wall wart) so it’s just the AC cord. If you’re traveling and want to charge on-the-go, just remember to carry along the provided AC cord and don’t expect to charge from a car unless you have a suitable power inverter handy.
Overall, this is a really great sounding and great looking portable music speaker.

Nice features but details could use refinement.
on August 9, 2018
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Very attractive design that looks good from the front and back (mostly).
* Stable base and sturdy hinge.
* Matching wireless keyboard and mouse.
* Built-in sliding cover for webcam privacy.
* HDMI input allows monitor to double as video display for other devices.
Cons:
* External power supply (brick) is huge.
* All buttons (power, volume, etc.) are hidden below the bezel and difficult to remember position of.
* No VESA (monitor arm or wall mount) mounting options.
* DVD drive door fits poorly and mars the nice-looking back panel.
* Webcam is not compatible with Windows Hello for facial recognition login.
* No way to pass the touch screen through to an external device (use the touchscreen for another PC).
The HP Pavilion AIO 24-R124 is a nicely-designed all-in-one Windows PC. It has everything that one might expect from a recent touchscreen PC including a built-in webcam, nice speakers and a wireless keyboard and mouse. It gets most things right, or at least right-enough for the price point.
What it could use, though, is a bit more refinement on some of the details. For example, the included wireless keyboard and mouse are nice, but you have to plug the included USB dongle into one of the few USB ports to get them to work. Why is the receiver not built-in? Also, the wireless mouse has a power button on the bottom, but the wireless keyboard does not have a power switch.
All of the on-PC buttons (power, HDMI input switching, etc.) are on the underside of the bezel. There are some removable stickers on the bezel for shipping purposes that tell you what buttons are where. Those stickers are intended to be removed as part of setting up the unit, and once they’re gone, you have to feel for the buttons and remember what “bump” is what button. Hidden buttons, even those that you don’t need to use often, are not the best idea without some labeling where you can see it.
I would love to mount this PC on my wall and use it as a touch-screen kiosk PC, but the (admittedly nice) desktop stand is intended to be removed only to access the inside of the PC to perform component upgrades and there is no VESA mount available for it.
The built-in webcam is nice enough and for those who are paranoid of webcam snooping, there is a slide switch on the top of the screen that slides a cover over the webcam for privacy.
The slim design of the PC is attractive, but apparently not big enough to fit a built-in power supply so a fairly huge external brick is included to go between the PC and the wall outlet. Not a huge deal (pun intended) but its just one of those details that could use some refinement for a 5-star rating.
Overall, this AIO PC looks nice on a desk and fills just about every need one could have for a modern Windows AIO PC. As they say, the devil is in the details and this would be an awesome PC if it just got those little details right, too.

Comfortable, Awesome Sound, Great Connectivity
on August 4, 2018
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Excellent audio quality; both in and out.
* Impressive range.
* Light and comfortable.
* Easy to adjust for best fit.
* Microphone flips up for Mute.
Cons:
* Microphone boom is a bit distracting when up (muted).
* Need to use a proprietary dongle (not BT).
There are 3 things that a good wireless gaming headset needs; great sound, great comfort and great connectivity (range). This one has all 3! I have been using it mainly for Skype calls on my PC for work. It replaced a nice over-the-head Bluetooth headset that was OK, but this one blows it away for all 3 categories.
Fit:
It’s really light and comfortable for long-time wear. The modular design allows for easy replacement of parts as well as shifting things around to make it fit better.
Sound:
Really large speakers that sound great. Onboard EQ settings to punch up the vocals, the bass or the leave it all flat. The flip-down boom microphone works well and mutes the microphone when stowed in the up position. The only small nit on this is that when up, the boom mic is a bit distracting in my peripheral vision.
Connectivity:
The headset uses a proprietary 2.4gHz wireless transmission which is great because it doesn’t conflict with WiFi, Bluetooth or any other common radios, but it also requires the use of the included transmission dongle. No big deal, but you have to consume a USB port and have something dangling off it.
Overall, I’m really happy with this headset. The onboard volume wheel and auto-muting microphone boom are really convenient and I can now walk all around my house while on conference calls with my PC in the other room.

Compact and Full-Featured 360 Camera
on July 15, 2018
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Excellent video quality.
* Useful (and fun) 360 video panning.
* Lots of useful features.
* Completely wireless if needed.
Cons:
* App works (mostly) but is cumbersome and visually outdated.
* Value is good but price is a bit high if you need more than one for coverage.
Most gadgets like this can be reviewed in two parts; the hardware and the software. The best products have great hardware and very well integrated and functional software. If you can’t get both right; best to get the hardware rock-solid and update the software later. That is the case for this Guardzilla 360 security camera.
The hardware is very well designed and I cannot find a fault in it. It feels solid and well-built and is very compact - almost like a floodlight lightbulb that doesn’t need to be screwed in. The video quality is quite good even in low light and it is surprisingly satisfying to pan video in 360 while it’s playing. This camera has a built-in battery that should last a while (depending on usage, of course) or you can keep it plugged in with the supplied long USB cable. The two provided mounting options allow for ceiling, wall and tabletop mounting; all of which are stable and easy to adjust.
The software, other the other hand, is passable but not very easy to use. There are numerous menus and settings groups that could be better organized. Some settings didn’t “stick” in that you would change them and come back later to find them reset back to what they were. The main app design (at least for iOS) is a bit dated and doesn’t follow modern design and UI conventions. But, it does mostly get the job done. You can view live video or play back recorded events that were trigged by motion when the unit was “armed” and the rest is gravy.
As mentioned above, provided the hardware is good, software can be easily updated later on. Overall, most things worked and I was impressed by the features and video quality, but an app overhaul would go a long way to making this a truly awesome product.
