Janty6192's Reviews

Sean Connery caper movies tend to be a good deal of fun, even when somewhat sloppy and thin around the edges. This film is no exception, though here it could be said that it's mainly Connery propping the thing up. The DVD presents the movie in its widescreen glory, with an anamorphic transfer preserving the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Colors throughout are strong and clear, though rarely vivid. The transfer is sharp and lacking any visible artifacts. Thanks to the kinds of locations and sets used, there is a tendency now and then for things to start greying out a little, but this is as much the fault of the film as anything. The Dolby 5.1 Audio has very definite presence, with a strong, clean bass, and an excellent use of environmental surround mixing, as well as directional and full surround effects. Overall, separation is excellent, and Christopher Young's somewhat generic caper-score is treated well. The main problem here seems to be the dialogue, which is very low-key and sometimes does not stand out very well. While the Dolby 2.0 Surround track loses quite a bit of separation (and thus effect), it does seem to have better dialogue balance. The French Dolby 2.0 track also has a good solid balance, as well as a good selection of voice actors and reasonably good dubbing. The DVD extras include a somewhat breathless commentary track from director Jon Amiel, three deleted scenes, also with commentaries, cast and crew pages, production notes, theatrical trailers, the various TV spots, and a "making of" piece (which is cunningly buried with the trailers and TV spots for some reason). The extras look good, and the deleted scenes have been given anamorphic transfers.
