A good movie for some time off

Picking up 10 years after the end of the original feature, Pacific Rim: Uprising introduces some new players and a whole new war in the making. Jake Pentecost, son of sacrificial war hero Stacker Pentecost, lives his life on the shady side until his adopted sister, Mako, drags him back into the world defense force to train a new generation of Jaeger pilots, and soon finds himself facing a whole new war with the monstrous Kaiju and their masters, the "Precursors," due to a critical betrayal. While the identity of the traitor doesn't remain secret for too long, and while the movie veers somewhat dangerously into Transformers rock-'em-sock-'em territory, it's still a good way to spend some time off for a day, a nice popcorn flick. The Best Buy exclusive package makes it easy to get whatever you want from it, be it the 4K version, the 3D version (which looks pretty good on a home system, actually), or the regular Blu-ray version; here you get them all for one price. Worth getting if you saw the original, or even if you like straight-up action movies in general.

Seems cobbled together, but looks great in 3D

It seems, for the live-action version of the popular Ghost in the Shell anime franchise, the story lacks originality in that it was put together from too many existing elements, rather than be something truly original. Indeed, those who know the story from the anime movies and TV series will recognize those elements easily, as most come from the original anime classic and the second season of the TV show. But even so, it's not totally bad--it just seems too derivative of its sources. That said, it's visually a gorgeous feature, and it deserves to be seen in 3D at least once, as the set design and special effects really come to life that way. The 3D work makes up for the story elements to a good degree; if you have the hardware and are interested in this title, this is the best way to go, outside of the 4K version.

Just when a major moment occurs...we get filler

Just when it seems Madara is on the verge of defeat, and the Allied Shinobi forces try to seal him away, the mysterious Black Zetsu forces Obito to execute his riskiest trick yet: The Art of Rinne Rebirth, which brings Madara back to life completely! Now alive again and seemingly invincible, he rips Kurama the Nine Tails out of Naruto and spears Sasuke, leaving both at Death's door...and then the series veers off into filler territory once again, with a look at how the Chunin Exams were restarted after the last exam's interruption years earlier. Since this filler lasts several episodes beyond this set, Naruto and Sasuke's fates will be up in the air for a while. Suffice to say, though, that no matter what, they will return to life and the war. Until next time, it's still worth getting this set for the canon material, which is highly compelling.

Logan's last stand is visceral and compelling

It had to happen at some point. The comic book character of James Howlett Logan, aka Wolverine, had to die. But Hugh Jackman makes his signature character's last stand memorable in many ways. In 2029, with mutants all but extinct, Logan makes a living as a chauffeur while tending to a badly ailing former Professor Charles Xavier. When a desperate woman approaches him with a mission, his life is turned upside-down as he finds himself forced to protect a young, vicious mutant girl--the product of illegal genetic engineering--from the bio-technology firm who created her, as she tries to find others who managed to escape and are preparing to cross into Canada and safety. The action scenes, while few in number, are quite visceral, but the character relationships are compelling enough to make them poignant. Many fans say that this is the Wolverine movie they were waiting for, and it's hard not to agree. Well worth a look, and the Blu-ray set even includes a black-and-white "Noir" edition, much like the "Black & Chrome" edition of Mad Max: Fury Road.

Back in a metal case for the first time in years

The new metal collector's case for the Akira Blu-ray set is the first of its kind since 2001, when Pioneer put out a deluxe metal case for its Special Edition DVD set. That alone makes it worth getting, but there's also a bonus--the case includes a 32-page booklet, previously produced for the very first pressing of the original Bandai Visual Blu-ray in 2009. Out of print since that initial run, the booklet provides a valuable look at the movie, particularly at the remastering of the original Japanese track into "Hypersonic audio" (currently the only audio track of its kind). The discs are the same as in the original 25th Anniversary set, but the package is absolutely worth getting (again), especially for the "Hypersonic" Japanese track, which can be heard with most receivers that decode Dolby TrueHD (and which is really the way it's meant to be seen and heard, in its original language). I couldn't recommend this any more than it has already been, except to say that this version is a must for anime collectors, and a great jumping-on point for almost anyone who wants to try the graphic medium for the first time.

As things look downward, a change of heart appears

The latest set for Naruto Shippuden finds the war looking grim again after Obito manages to become the Jinchuriki for Ten Tails, and unleashes the Divine Tree that presages the threat of the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Despite these occurrences, however, Naruto finds a way into Obito's mind and, upon reviewing his memories, tries to convince him to have a change of heart and abandon his current path of destruction. And in that endeavor he may succeed.... Also included in this set is the two-episode "Mecha Naruto" spoof, with Naruto going up against a robot version of himself. Worth getting as the story races towards the penultimate level.

Demands to be seen in 3D

Doctor Strange is one of the select few 3D movies that, like Avatar before it, practically demands you see it in 3D at least once. The effects are incredibly well done, especially for a post-production conversion such as this. When neurosurgeon Stephen Strange loses the use of his hands in an accident, his search for a cure leads him to the hidden enclave of Kamar-Taj, where he soon learns to revitalize his hands with sorcery. But sinister forces, led by the renegade sorcerer Kaecilius, are bent on bringing the Dark Lord Dormammu to our world, and the Doctor must quickly join the battle against the Dark Dimension or Earth will be lost. With visuals paralleling the psychedelic styles of the original comics, and with the variable ratios of the film's IMAX presentation preserved, the 3D version is practically a must-see in that format. It's more than a trip, or even a trip-and-a-half.

Very easy to attach, hard to lose

I've been used to working with the kind of banana plug connectors you have to crimp onto speaker wire, but when I bought a new receiver I decided to try these for a change, and I'm glad I did. The lock-on design is much simpler to work with, and is far more secure than crimp-on connectors, insuring that you won't damage or lose them so easily. Despite the price, these plugs are worth getting.
