I have this printer's predecessor & it has worked just fine for home use for a couple years. In fact it's still running fine. So I knew what I was getting when I bought this one. It is S L O W and has to reset itself after each single copy and that is aggravating and time consuming. And it does not have a very good paper feed. Papers tend to get stuck or come through in bunches, half the print on one sheet and the other half on another sheet. And when that happens, and the paper jam is cleared out, the printer has to be turned off completely to reset it because the jam code gets stuck in its memory. And lastly, after taking out the paper feed tray & replacing it, the printer requires a 1 or 2 to be selected before I can print again. So if these things won't bother you, it's a good inexpensive choice because it does print well. I wonder why Brother requires different ink cartridges for essentially the same machine but a new model year. Hmmmm.

Does the printer print PDFs and excel docs with laptop running Windows 7? 2 new hp printers don't.

Yes, but,they are not full size & don't last very long.

No. Uses ink cartridges.
