Best overall APS-C camera

In my opinion, this is the best overall APS-C interchangeable lens camera available at any price. I have been using mine for just over a month. It produces outstanding images. There are many reasons why, but I want everyone to understand I am not writing this review for professionals who already know the features of the camera, but rather for beginner and intermediate photographers. These are the big things that are important to the quality of your images:
1. In Camera Body Image Stabilization (IBIS). Unless your hands are super steady, with 24 megapixels you will need image stabilization to get really sharp images. If you don't have IBIS, you are limited to those lenses which have in-lens image stabilization. But many small, truly outstanding prime lenses, do not have image stabilization. To name three, there is a Sony F2 28mm lens about $500, two Sony-Zeiss lenses, an APS-C F1.8 24mm and F1.8 55mm which are both outstanding. IBIS means you can shoot these lenses with this camera, hand held, and get tack sharp images.
2. Focus. a lot gets said about image quality, but IMHO the biggest single obstacle to shooting really good shots for every day photographers, is that the shot is a little out of focus. This camera has superb focusing. It's super quick and super accurate, so a much higher percentage of your shots are good. Not to harp on it, but if you don't get good focus on a key shot, well, it isn't going to happen again, so you just missed it. You have to learn how to use the focus settings on the camera. But when you do, wow!
3. Fast shooting and focusing. I have not used the camera at its fastest shooting speed (more than 10 frames per second) but only at it medium speed; plenty fast for me. It shoots and refocuses keeping your shots always in focus. For my wife's hula dancing it works like a charm.
4. Sony has a lot of video experience which translates into much more user friendly video capabilities. Sony's file formats work easily with multiple softwares, And by the way, the IBIS is really important for hand held video. For hand held, I also like that the size and weight are a lot less than the DSLR cameras. And just to mention the sensor APS-C size is the largest practical sensor size for video... and the video images and colors are imho much better than those in dedicated consumer level video cameras.
5. I personally favor APS-C cameras over full frame for a whole bunch of reasons. Depth of field is greater...which means more of your image will be in better focus. (Many pros actually prefer that only their main subject is in focus, because other stuff in focus detracts from the main image). But most consumers want as much of their images in focus as possible. Because individual pixels are smaller than in full frame cameras, actual detail of images will be greater as long as you zoom in on your actual subject. There are also more smaller lenses that work with APS-C than with full frame cameras, so you can keep the size of camera+lens much smaller with APS-C.
6. There's a whole list of lesser considerations and technical reasons why I like the A6500 better than any other APS-C camera. If you are interested you can read about them elsewhere on the web. But here I have tried to stay focused on the things that will actually make a difference to your everyday image quality.
7. Commentators complain that batteries could be larger and that Sony menus are not to their liking. The camera has touch screen, but they complain, only limited functions...on and on. But the truth is, all but the most demanding users simply develop workarounds for most of these kinds of concerns, and they are not really a factor in everyday photography.

Good lens for video

The good things about this lens are that it's well built, it has an electronic zoom, so that you can zoom much more smoothly during a video clip, it has a nice zoom range up to 105 mm that gives quite a bit more zoom than a standard zoom. And it's priced reasonably. Contrary to some measurement site reports, in my experience, this lens is not as sharp as the Sony Zeiss F4 16-70., and not quite as sharp as the Sony 18-200 3.5 to 6.3(the silver one). But check out the fish pix I took with it while at the aquarium with my daughter, using this lens on an A6300. And keep in mind, that for video, you are not looking for 24 megapixels of photographic sharpness. 1929x 1080 (high definition) is closer to 2 megapixels, and even 4 k is only 8 mp. so, if using with an NEX or A6000 series primarily for video it's a great choice.

Great Camera

After owning half a dozen other Nikon DSLR's I am loving this camera because it is so much fun to use. Quick and accurate autofocus results in a high % of keepers. It has a new semi auto fine tune adjustment which can be recorded for each lens you use. The huge list of both DX and FF lenses available for Nikon (including Sigma, Tokina and Tamron lenses) create a very long list of quality glass that's not too expensive for the camera. Need to say that Nikon's sensor technology has narrowed the gap between Full Frame and APS-C lenses, so I don't think I give up much if anything in image quality with this camera. I have been favoring smaller mirrorless cameras, because of their small size and they are excellent, and contrarywise, this camera can in no way be regarded as small. But I have used, and highly recommend, the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 and the Sigma 18-35 f1.8, which are both pro quality lenses for under $1000 (each) Focus is lightning quick and accurate with both of these lenses. I am an old focus and recompose photographer, but this camera has many advanced focus features including a dedicated focus point joy stick and touch screen which I have not yet learned to use, and a tilting screen which I personally use quite a bit for shooting at odd angles. The quality of the jpegs is good, but I have been shooting compressed raw, and very much enjoying the results. I don't use the camera for video, so cannot comment on those features. In my own experience, when I toss a photo, the reason is usually focus. So I love this camera because more than any other, it focuses quickly and accurately. If money is an issue, there are a lot of other cameras that are nearly as good and cost half as much. But if price and video are not that important and you want the best all round APS-c camera that there is, this camera is it.

The more you work with digital cameras, the more you realize how important accurate focus is. What makes the Sony A6000 stand out is how fast and how accurately it focuses. I am attaching a head crop from a casual shot of my daughter at the swimming pool, first day I had this camera; lens was a Sony/Zeiss 16-70 F4. Focus just doesn't get any better.
There's the new A6300 which is even faster, and with a few more options including S Log 2 and 3 and 4k video, but for hundreds of dollars more. On good thing, the 6300 does us the favor of causing some discounts on the A-6000 that make it just an incredible value. I also have and recommend the Nikon D5500...if it is fairly comparably priced. Either of these cameras regularly produces shots of a quality unknown on any digital camera only 10 years ago. And for both, excellent lenses are available at pretty reasonable prices. But if I had to choose only one, it would be the A6000.

I use UV filters on all my lenses as lens protectors. I was excited that Best Buy decided to carry Hoya, because tests have shown that Hoya filters let more light through than any others. So I bought for all my best lenses. Besides lens protection these filters also help reduce glare and stay cleaner easier...See attached pix. Two other good reasons besides basic lens protection. So yes I absolutely recommend them.

This is, no joke, a superb camera for a mid level photographer. It has up to date sensor and processor, and can take pictures equal to the finest DSLR cameras out there. I love the tiltable screen that allows me to take pictures from angles high and low, that I couldn't get with a fixed screen camera. And I love that it comes with very usable kit lenses, but can also be used with high end lenses for even better results, if and when a photographer is ready to take that plunge. As an APS-C camera it has greater depth of field than the larger full frame cameras...meaning that in every day picture taking your photos are more likely to be in focus. The image I included demonstrates the superior color and dynamic range of the camera. It was taken with the kit lens.

Some people would describe the D3300 as a beginner DSLR, but the description misses the essence of this camera. With a state of the art APS-C sensor and processor, great focusing ability, the D3300 has the ability to take prize winning photos in the right hands. And I might mention it's a camera that can grow with the photographer. The two "push button" kit lenses that come with this camera are surprisingly capable and very small...i.e. convenient to carry. The very inexpensive Nikon F1.8 35mm dx lens can be added to provide additional sharpness and low light capability. But the camera also fits and can use all Nikon mount fixed focal length and zoom lenses right up to the very best $2000 lenses and can deliver incredible images with these lenses. ... there are more expensive cameras with more features...but the D3300 has all the basics needed to take awesome pictures.

I bought this card because it is fast enough to handle 4k video clips. Before this, cards with a 10 circled, were fast enough for avchd. This card is good especially if you are going to do clips, not too long. For long running 4 k video should have a card faster than 100 mb per sec. which are much more expensive.

In this camera, Sony has rolled out a whole collection of new technologies that together create many new avenues for getting better pictures. Most important is the fact that Sony has inclluded a processor which allows much faster processing of data and therefore permits 4k video (every frame is 8 mega pixels, so every frame could be a photograph) and some slow motion functions that are really fun. (Our four year old slurping spaghetti in slow mo.) Also, a very fast repetitive frame rate. There's also a cool eye focus function to keep your frame continuously focused on the closest eye of the person closest to the camera. What they call the "back lit" sensor increases light to the sensor and thus better pictures in low light situations, but individually snapped pictures in normal light are not that much better than the Mark II and III, so if that's all you want to do, buy one of the older ones and save some bucks. Not me. I wanted the whole enchilada, and it is exciting taking pictures with it. .
