Highly customizable, very well made

Razer's always had a penchant for excess in its products. But I'll admit that after they released an RGB equipped facemask during the pandemic I'd thought they must have been nearing the peak of what was achievable. But their latest revision of the Huntsman keyboard seems in some ways like it was designed just to prove me wrong. They are clearly committed to continuing their habit of introducing you to objectively insane features you never knew you'd love.
So, to start things off, the key thing that makes this board different from many of its competitors is the analog optical switch. Most optical switches are fairly basic designs. You have an LED on one end, a photoreceptor on the other, and a sliding gate between them. When the key is up, the gate is open and light shines through. When the key is pressed the gate closes, and the sudden darkness is detected as a keypress. The switches here use a very different gate design that allows for partial occlusion that gets more intense the further down the key has been pressed, allowing it to not only tell that a key has been pressed but how far it's been pressed. Every key can give you the same kind of fine input as a console controller's joystick or triggers, allowing you to either get highly precise control for movement/throttles in games that support it without a dedicated controller or adjust the sensitivity for each key on the board independently.
I won't lie: getting this feature fully set up can be complicated and more than a little overwhelming if you plan on taking full advantage of every key. It's also not something you're likely to use all the time, or consider to be indispensable. But it's also so. Freaking. Cool. And as silly as it may sound, that does count for a PC gaming accessory. The whole point of this hobby is to bring joy and for a tech head, knowing that you always have the option to spend a few minutes mapping your W key to your move speed in your favorite really does bring joy.
Of course it helps that this isn't the only thing the keyboard brings to the table either. The build quality on this keyboard is top notch - far better even than the other Razer keyboards I've used in the past. Every single key has a stabilizer bar installed. The aluminum top plate makes for a rock solid deck. The two stage legs allow you to adjust it to your preferred typing angle. And the volume wheel is satisfying chunky and solid feeling as you spin it (though I remain confused why Razer has decided that turning the wheel clockwise should be the default for increasing volume, as if it were a traditional dial.) And the company's trademark over the top RGB is on full display, with all the configurability and game integration you could want. The only thing I find myself ambivalent about is the included wrist rest. I don't know that anyone's ever managed to build a wrist rest that was considered exciting, but I feel like Razer is the kind of company that could and would figure out a way to not only do it, but make it luminescent in the process.
As far as the actual typing experience goes, again I have to give it high marks but with a caveat. Usually, non-tactile linear switches like this are tuned to feel very light and springy as a way of optimizing reaction times. These are not. In fact it's hard to compare them to any other switches I've used before. They feel substantial, almost heavy, and smooth to the point that it's almost unnerving. In terms of actual performance this doesn't really matter, since with a programmable actuation point they can be adjusted to be however twitchy you need for your particular play style. But there is definitely an adjustment period. It took me a good two days of fiddling before it started feeling comfortable, and it still feels a lot better playing a game on it than it does just doing every day typing where the complete lack of tactile feedback makes it easy to wear yourself out hammering on the keys. So you might want to keep your likely usage habits in mind if you're looking at this to be your daily driver.
So, would I recommend this keyboard?
Generally, yes. With the kind of attention to detail and fine customization on display here it's a product that doesn't even pretend to be for everyone but is nonetheless confident that there's a certain kind of gamer for whom nothing else will do. And I do think there are a lot of gamers out there who would love the weird fun that this new Huntsman brings to the table.

Why settle for a single band when you can choose daily between two unique options? The Insignia NS-AWB412PKSP Silicone and Nylon Bands for Apple Watch 38mm, 40mm and 41mm (2-Pack) delivers the best of both worlds with two different bands to choose from. A durable silicone band with secure clasp stays firmly in place all day, while a soft nylon band with loop closure is comfortable for everyday wear. Both bands sport a water-resistant design for any activity, rain or shine. Two are certainly better than one with this Insignia silicone and nylon band 2-pack.

Functional, but not particularly impressive.

With the prices that first party watchbands can go for, having more affordable third party options is a must-have for any smartwatch owner. This goes double for Apple watch users, given the proprietary lug-less design that particular device offers. Insignia's offerings are functional and colorful, but ultimately may be better reserved for occasional fashion accessories rather than every day usage.
The first watch in the pack is the silicone offering, featuring a conventional buckle closure. The band is large and easily adjustable, the color is consistent, and it's fairly comfortable to wear. That said it does look rather bulky compared to the standard silicone bands Apple sells, and as such would probably be best reserved for people with fairly large wrists. On my girlfriend the strap wrapped almost all the way back around when she wore it, and the two holders on the band gave it a rather unattractive look.
The velcro band, meanwhile, fits much better and is quite comfortable. It also looks much more striking when viewed from a distance. That said I have a lot of concerns about build quality. There are visible gaps when the metal lugs are installed, and you can see them shift in the case when any kind of pressure is applied. What's more one of them just refused to properly clip into place when being installed. I don't know if it was just too loose for the clip to fully engage or if the rubber bumper on the opposite side wasn't giving enough pressure, but after a few hours of relatively light activity one end had already shifted several millimeters to the side. Additionally the plastic catch meant to stop the free end of the velcro from sliding through the loop isn't quite large enough to actually do its job. All the plastic parts also have visible mold marks along the outer edge that look ugly and can potentially dig into your skin.
Now, granted, these are third party accessories being sold at a very competitive price point. Given that, reduced expectations are somewhat reasonable. But the fact is that there are a lot of other similarly priced 3rd party offerings in this space that are built better than these bands. Which makes it rather hard for me to recommend unless you just really like that two-tone pink colorway.

Essential hardware - well laid out
on November 9, 2023

It's not hard to find a surge protector for your home. Finding a good surge protector, however, can be trying to say the least. There are an abundance of options out there that are under-powered, feature nonsensical outlet layouts, or just look ugly. This one is none of those. It's got pretty much all the features you might need for a surge protector for your computer or small appliances. The 1,200 joule rating is high enough to handle a high powered gaming rig, a few small appliances, or anything else you might be trying to plug into it. The low profile plug offsets cord to one side, helping make sure it won't block a standard outlet if plugged into the top position. The cord itself is long enough to give you plenty of options when positioning it and doing cable management. And the outlets are well laid out, with a 50/50 mix of closely grouped plugs suitable for standard three prong cords and separated ones that can accommodate larger power bricks without blocking the neighboring outlets. All in all, it's a solid pick for the home or office.

A huge improvement
on November 1, 2023
Posted by: Batlacit
I can consider myself an owner of one of the first pairs of Ray-Ban's smart sunglasses, but I've never been able to count myself as much of a user of them. While they are stylish and somewhat cool to use they were marred by a variety of flaws. The lenses were non-replaceable, making them either unreasonably expensive or largely useless to anyone who required a prescription. The audio quality was somewhat mediocre. And the quality of the cameras left a lot to be desired. This second generation manages to improve on just about everything about the first attempt - though it admittedly does still have a bit of room for improvement.
First up, let's talk about the elephant in the room: the lenses. With the original glasses you could only get lenses installed in the factory, and most opticians wouldn't even consider working on them if the originals got damaged or you found yourself wanting to get a prescription made up. The lenses in this version can be replaced, though admittedly you do need to take them into one of their approved partners for this service. The price is fairly reasonable for Ray-Ban branded optics, and while at the moment selection is fairly limited this is something that could realistically be improved over time. I do find myself missing the option for transition lenses, which is what I had with my last pair, but the polarized gradient lenses I got with this one are great sunglasses and offer sterling clarity out in the field.
Next up is the frame. Once again, my original pair was pretty good but not perfect. It was a bit bulky and heavy around the temples, which could lead to some discomfort after a while. Additionally the sound produced by the built in directional speakers lacked good bass response, even going by the somewhat lower standards of open-air headphone designs like this. The new pair feels like it's got a much better balance and while tolerances haven't changed much they have changed enough to alleviate the pain that came with prolonged use. And much to my surprise, they sound amazing. Music and speech both come through very clear and there's bass to spare, almost as good as my in-ear headphones. They've also got plenty of volume - perhaps a little too much, in fact. Audio bleed is definitely a thing so if privacy is your goal you may not want to make use of these for calls or listening to your favorite music. But my main use case is biking or going for hikes with my dog, and I find them to be perfect for that. Finally, the cameras. The new cameras they've installed here are significantly improved over the last generation, offering much greater clarity for both video and still images. There's also the new ability to do live streaming. I'll admit that this feature still feels rather odd to me, but it's undeniably cool.
I'm still not quite ready to make these my daily glasses - I'd definitely want transition lenses for that as I don't want to have to choose between being able to listen to my invisible earbuds or being that weird guy wandering around a convenience store with dark sunglasses on. But they have managed to fulfill the promise of the originals of being the best smart glasses currently on the market. They're an easy recommendation for me - assuming of course you're willing to pay Ray-Ban prices.

Fun addition to racing games
on September 29, 2023
Posted by: Batlacit
Like many others, during the lockdown I took up sim racing as a way to trick myself into thinking I was getting out of the house. As part of this new hobby I picked up a Logitech racing wheel with pedals which has served me well. But let's face it - as efficient as they are, the flappy paddle gear shifters lack something compared to the more traditional stick shifter. So when the opportunity to add this to my rig came along, I was more than happy to try it out.
In my experience, Thrustmaster has always been the brand to go to for unassuming but very durable flight sticks. I'd never tried any of their driving accessories before though, and when I first took the shifter out of the box I'll admit I was a little worried. When you play in VR it's very easy to get caught up in the moment - which is why it's very important that any sim hardware be built to be able to take all of the abuse the real thing might in case someone uses more force than they really should. And I'll admit that my first impression was not great. Pretty much all the visible parts save for the stalk itself are plastic, and only a single screw clamp was provided for mounting. It was also very lightweight compared to the wheel and pedals I had, making me wonder how long it could possibly stand up to abuse. But after spending a few days with it, I've realized these fears were unfounded. While the case may be plastic there's a very solid frame underneath it, and it is very satisfyingly tactile as you slam the shifter home in each gear as you move through the progression. Thrustmaster has clearly done what they always do and invested everything into making the internals as reliable as possible. What's more setup worked great with no effort at all from me. Since I wasn't pairing it with a Thrustmaster wheel I simply attached the provided USB cable to use it as a standard input device and it was immediately recognized and configured in two of the three racing games I tried it out on. The fact that you don't have to pair it with another Thrustmaster device is a huge plus IMO, and something other companies should be learning from.
There are, however, a few downsides that should be mentioned. The biggest is the mounting solution. If you have a racing stand with a dedicated tray for you to permanently mount your shifter, you are going to be out of luck here. For some reason they did not include any mounting lugs, meaning you're stuck with the screw clamp and rubber friction pads to keep it in place on your stand or desk. Admittedly this does work well enough - I didn't have any issues with it sliding around once I got it clamped down, but rubber pads do eventually wear down and need to be replaced. Bolts really don't. And it's also hard to beat the cleaner look of a permanent mount. It would have been very nice to at least have the option.

Good basic webcam with some room for customization
on September 28, 2023
Posted by: Batlacit
Webcams are one of those pieces of tech that can be a bit hard to talk about. Ultimately I don't know anyone who doesn't have something of a love-hate relationship with the things, particularly after endless and awkward Zoom meetings became the norm during the lockdowns. So what can you really say about something like the JBuds Cam, which elects not to try and reinvent the wheel but simply offer everything you need and not much more?
Image quality is on the upper edge of what I'd expect from a modern desktop webcam. Images are sharp and motion is clear provided you've got good lighting. If you don't colors do tend to get washed out somewhat, but it should be fine for most use cases. Audio is likewise acceptable. It can't rival a dedicated mic or headset, but you also won't have to worry about being heard and feedback wasn't a significant problem with the right settings. Overall build quality is likewise good. It's certainly on the chunky side and permanently affixed to its monitor clip (which admittedly doesn't have a ton of range to adjust the angle) which comes with a built in screw mount in case you need to set it up on a tripod. Standout features here are the braided USB cable and swappable magnetic faceplate - which lets you use either a dark gray or light gray fabric to better match your home setup.
It doesn't have everything you might want. There's no support for Windows Hello, facial tracking, or any kind of auto focus. But it's nonetheless a very solid choice for a cheap, reliable desktop webcam.

Stylish, well made earbuds
on September 20, 2023
Posted by: Batlacit
I think most people's first impressions on seeing these earbuds will probably be "wow, these look GOOD." Marshall has clearly rejected current design trends of smooth, minimalist plastic casings that blend into the background. Everything from the leathery finish on the case mimicking their iconic amps to the satisfyingly tactile metal knurling on the earbuds' stems is designed to make a clear statement. What that statement is (other than a fondness for guitar amps) I'm not quite sure of though.
It probably won't surprise you after that description to learn that these things have a little bit of heft to them. At first, my assumption was that this might be a problem and that they'd be prone to falling out. But much to my surprise, this hasn't been an issue. The earbuds comfortably nestle into my ear canals, and remain fixed in place as I walk around with them. I'm still a little nervous to try prolonged jogging, truth be told, but a few small tests around my yard failed to shake them free. Assuming you take the time to install the correct tips for your ears, I'd say that these score high for comfort.
Sound quality, as one might expect from this brand, is equally good. The bass response is just a little weaker than some of the other earbuds I've tried, however both music and speech comes through clear and has a sound balance that overall I'd characterize as satisfying. Indeed there was really only one area that I found performance slightly lacking: the active noise cancellation. I don't quite know what happened here. Earbud ANC has gotten very good in the last few years, to the point where it's almost as good as what you could get on some of the older headsets. But the ANC here just felt underwhelming. AC and engine noise was significantly muffled, but remained clearly audible nonetheless. And most other ambient sound was very hit or miss in regards to what got blocked and what didn't. That said, there is one advantage that might be worth considering: I felt very little of the inner ear pressure that typically comes with ANC earbuds and headphones, even after a full hour of use. So if you're someone who's particularly sensitive to such things, you may find it easier to handle these earbuds for prolonged periods.

A top tier fitness tracker that's also a watch
on September 20, 2023
Posted by: Batlacit
I’ve been using a smart watch more or less daily for several years now and have tried several different brands over that time. This was my first experience with Garmin’s take on the concept, and I have to say it surprised me in several ways. Rather than leaning into the more traditional smart features, Garmin instead chose to put the health and fitness features at the forefront. And while it is a little weird to get used to coming from a more traditional smart watch, I think there’s a lot that someone looking for a step up from more basic fitness trackers might find to love.
The first thing that drew my attention upon taking it out of the box was the screen – which is just as big across as the largest of the current generation of flagship watches. However interestingly enough it’s paired with a somewhat slimmer body, making it look significantly smaller on the wrist. The band is made of high quality silicone and is extremely adjustable, though not exceptionally breathable. But since it uses standard quick-release lugs to attach it to the body it would be fairly easy to replace if the amount of sweat that builds up underneath it becomes a problem. Controls are all handled via the touch screen (which is vibrant, colorful, and very responsive) and three buttons along one side. There’s also a surprisingly good sounding speaker and mic combo to take calls, use a virtual assistant, or even listen to music if you find yourself lacking a pair of earbuds to pair with it.
As far as usability goes, it’s a big departure from what I’m used to with WearOS devices. To start with, almost all the commands are mapped to a variety of button combos that I found a bit hard to memorize and the watch doesn’t do much to teach you about them when starting up. The user experience is also very focused on the fitness tracking features. Notifications are present but not immediately available without going through two menus, customization and settings adjustments more or less have to be taken care of on the app in the paired phone, and the integration with Android at least is a bit less seamless than I was used to. I discovered early on that certain apps which provide real time updates to their notifications end up spamming the watch, requiring you to block them to keep the thing from becoming unbearable. And watch face selection is certainly much more limited – though to be fair still quite acceptable in my opinion. I wouldn’t call any of it a deal breaker by any means, but it’s definitely a device with a learning curve.
Moving onto what the device does best, however, there’s a lot of good things to highlight. The fitness tracking features are top notch, with sensors like a barometer to help alert you to sudden shifts in the weather while you’re out on a hike. The fitness apps I tried generally make very good use of them too – and the GPS performance is exemplary (as one might expect, given Garmin’s history as a company.) I am somewhat concerned that there doesn’t seem to be an official rating for waterproofing, but according to the company it should be able to stand up to most things you might encounter on trails and I can confirm that getting splashed or partly submerged for brief periods doesn’t seem to be a problem. One particularly interesting feature I experimented with is the “body battery” meter, which takes into account activity levels and sleep quality to give you a heads up as to how much energy you might be able to expend before becoming fatigued. While I can’t say it’s perfect it did at least roughly line up with when I found myself needing to stop for a break – and again seems like a great thing to have when you’re out hiking and may be trying to decide when to turn back or stop for the night to make camp. It also gets high marks for battery life – which can easily last several days with a bit of power management.
In conclusion, the Venu 3 is probably not a watch for everyone. But for a very particular type of user – someone who is very active, enjoys the outdoors, and isn’t necessarily looking for an extension of their phone – it’s probably going to be sitting at the top of a very short list of smart watch options.

Basic, effective EV charger
on September 12, 2023
Posted by: Batlacit
One of the more annoying trends in EVs lately is the decision to stop bundling level 1 chargers with them. While it's true that technically one can get by without one these days, I maintain that charging up your car at home overnight is still by far the most convenient and cost effective way to make sure you stay topped up. This level 1 charger from Rexing is a very good, if somewhat basic, option for your EV that you can get without having to pay a premium for a first party option from the dealer.
The charger itself isn't doing anything particularly unusual here. The 16A output is pretty typical for a level one charger, so a charging session is going to require several hours (unlike with a more powerful level 2 charger, which requires a 240v circuit to be added to your home.) The charger is built to be either thrown in your trunk using the convenient carrying bag or semi-permanently mounted on the wall using a few screw posts (not provided.) The cables are sturdy and long enough to work in a typical 2-car garage without issue, while still offering a relatively compact form factor for taking on the go. Some telemetry is available on the charger's screen, but I'll admit I usually forgot to look at it. Again, with level 1 chargers you're usually plugging it in at the end of the day so it can work overnight. I kind of take it as a given that it'll be ready to go after 8 hours.
Frankly, it's a little hard to say much more about it. This is not a product that's trying to reinvent the wheel or dazzle you with features. It's a straightforward utilitarian attempt to fill a niche. The basic functionality is all here, which makes it an easy recommendation for anyone looking for a level 1 EV charging solution.

Ninja Soda
on September 5, 2023
Posted by: Batlacit
Ninja has a well earned reputation for producing slightly over-engineered, highly stylish kitchen appliances. Their first foray into home carbonation systems continues the trend. The Thirsti checks pretty much all the boxes I could hope for, and offers a compelling alternative to current soda water makers for those willing to devote the space to it.
In the box you get the machine itself, a single CO2 cylinder, two water reservoirs, and an 8 pack of randomly selected flavorings. Any additional accessories can be ordered online and I suspect will be appearing in stores soon if they haven't already. The instructions recommend keeping two additional CO2 cylinders on hand so that you can make full use of their mail in replacement program, where you swap two empties for two full cylinders. All in all, it's pretty standard fare. Where things start to get interesting is in how the reservoirs are used. Rather than carbonating an entire bottle of water at a time the machine is designed to carbonate and dispense water in 6oz increments directly into your glass of choice while simultaneously mixing in the flavor.
I have to say that this is a huge improvement over my previous carbonation system. Anyone who's tried to mix in soda syrups or the like without causing the whole thing to fizz up and overflow can attest that it's oftentimes more art than science. There is none of that with the Thirsti. Everything comes out perfectly mixed to the strength I like it with just a few button presses. The machine even effectively cleans up after itself by sending a burst of plain water through the nozzle at the end to purge any remaining flavorings. Even the reservoirs are well thought out - with color changing valves at the bottom that turn blue when the water's gotten cold enough for carbonating. It's a very well put together package that looks quite sharp on my counter.
As for the flavorings themselves, I found the mix I got to be very pleasant. The current lineup definitely leans more into unsweetened sparkling water flavors than soda, but they're all quite pleasant and if you turn up the intensity of the flavor it definitely feels a bit more soda-like for those who prefer their water with unwise amounts of sugar. That said variety is definitely lacking a bit here at the moment. It looks like some of the flavors mentioned in the manual/recipe book haven't actually released yet, and there's no third party options at this time. The caffeinated offerings are particularly sparse, with only three options at the time of writing. Good news is that there's no reason you can't buy flavored syrups or the like to mix with the water the old fashioned way - but I do hope that we won't have to wait too long before seeing some new offerings like colas, additional fruit flavorings, or the like. For those who don't like their water flavored at all - I think you'll be happy with what you get. I've certainly seem more powerful carbonation systems, but none that are quite so consistent as this. You always get a decent amount of bubbles that stick around for several minutes at the minimum. And best of all - the machine is almost quiet while it works.
What's less likely to improve over time though is the amount of space the system takes up. There's no getting around it: the thirsty has a fairly large footprint for a machine of this type, and the need to keep the water chilled means it's going to be taking up space both on your counter and fridge. It's easily twice the size of my old Soda Stream, though it does make up for it somewhat by dispensing with the need to store water bottles. It's also a little on the heavy side thanks to the CO2 cylinder, so it's not necessarily the best appliance to be hauling out as needed.
Ultimately, the Thirsti is an easy recommendation for me provided that Ninja keeps working to push out new flavors and options for us.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Explore realistic 3D audio with sound precisely projected from above, in front, behind and to the side of you with the latest acoustic technologies.

I am interested in this product to go with a new Samsung - 50" Class QN90A Neo QLED 4K UHD Smart Tizen TV however the TV is going to be on a swivel bracket from the wall. Is there any way to attached the sound-bar to the bottom of the TV?

Yes. It's got a pretty standard wall mount system, and there are VESA compatible brackets you can get to let you attach it to the TV instead. That said it does need a bit of clearance between the soundbar and the bottom of the TV set to make sure you don't block the upward firing speakers at all and the case is pretty deep compared to most sound bars, so you might want to keep in mind that it's not likely to be a very clean looking setup compared to some other options that are available.

Do you have to use the rear speakers when purchasing this item, and will it effect the system with the rear speakers Not in use

The rear speakers are completely optional. If you don't pair anything with them, it just reports itself as a 3.1.2 channel soundbar.

Has anyone noticed it being hot? Not quite sure if it would be ok for my laptop.

Operating temps never even hit 70°c in the ASUS gaming ultrabook I tried it in, and that's not exactly a cool machine to begin with. I think it'd do fine in most laptops provided they have decent cooling, particularly since there's some onboard thermal management to help keep it from burning itself out.

Hi, does this cleaner spray water and mop the floor?

It's not spraying water so much as it's excreting it, but yes. It's got one of the most effective mopping systems I've tried in a robot.

Can you make a map for the robot in the app?

No. The robot really doesn't seem to have any awareness of the geometry of a room, it just follows a set pattern from its starting point until it hits something. It's less random than the old bumper vacuums which means it gets further on a charge, but it's also easier for it to miss spots.

Does this Vacuum and mop at the same time? Or first vacuum, then mop?

In mop mode it can do a little vacuuming as the vacuum head still runs and there's a tiny (unfiltered) dustbin to hold any debris it sweeps up, but I'm pretty sure it's not going to do much to trap dust. And it can't do both carpet and hard flooring in one go, you need to swap out a module for the different floor types.

I have tile and carpet throughout home. Will it mop tile then switch to vacuum carpet? Or do I have to tell it what to do? .

It can't do both simultaneously. You need to switch modes by swapping out the standard dustbin for a motorized mophead containing a tank for cleaning fluid. In this mode it will not run if it detects that it's on carpeting.

Fly through the sky in ways that seem impossible. We never lost our passion for flying, and with DJI FPV, those passions have turned imagination into reality. With this immersive and intuitive aerial platform, get ready to go into the beyond. Sleek and aerodynamic, the DJI FPV aircraft delivers powerful propulsion, battery life, and wind resistance, making this system as capable as it is visually stunning.

Will this drone and all it's features work well with my Samsung Galaxy Note 10+?

The DJI Fly app will run fine on a Note 10, but it should be noted that it doesn't actually need to use the phone for nearly as much as some other drones DJI has released. Most of the vital functions are handled in the included FPV goggles.

Does this fly more combo come with more than 1 battery?

This SKU is not for the fly more combo, and it does not come with extra batteries. The one that's included runs for about 15-20 minutes in N mode, and requires a little less than an hour to charge.
