The wait for a US release of Spirited Away on Blu-ray has been worth it. The picture/audio quality on this disc is stunning, worthy of this modern classic. The extras are mostly imported from the previous DVD release, but with this film, it's almost more valuable to leave its behind-the-scenes details to your own imagination. A must-buy for fans of the film, animation, and cinema.

A great screen to buy if, like me, you have a projector but do not live in circumstances where permanent installation of a larger screen is possible. Easy setup and use with practice, large enough to prove the quality of a projector over a TV, and easy to transport with a simple folding design.

Those who watch Whiplash anticipating an inspirational mentor/student story will be surprised at best, terrified at worst, for it is a film about the fraught line between "hard work" and "obsession" in pursuit of a dream. Supported by two fantastic performances in Teller and Simmons, the film's energy grows more manic and more tense over its runtime, only calming down when necessary for the film's simple-but-perfectly-told story, culminating in the most intense 20 minutes of just about any movie from the year. The video is crisp and beautiful, as is the audio (necessary for a movie so structured around music), and the collection of extras present on-disc is fascinating and enjoyable, most notably a commentary featuring J.K. Simmons, whose performance won him his first Oscar at this year's ceremony, a brief overlook of the history of jazz drumming, and the original short that inspired the film. Tense, exciting, and unrestrained, Whiplash is one of the best films of 2014, and its debut on Blu-ray does not disappoint.

As with any Best Picture Winner, Birdman will be met with skepticism and doubt. Though the film has some problems (namely within its scripts and underlying messages/ideas about show business, art, and humanity), it has many strong elements, including unanimously great performances, namely by Michael Keaton in his comeback role and a never-better Edward Norton, as well as stunning cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki (Gravity, The Tree of Life) presented as though it were a single unedited shot, beautifully preserved on this Blu-ray along with the film's dynamic, percussion-driven soundtrack. Some extras are presented, notably an interview with Keaton and the film's writer/director Alejandro Iñárritu. The film is a definite rent-before-buying, but for anyone who is a fan, the Blu-ray gives this bombastic film a suitable presentation. Also gotta love the red Blu-ray case.

I have an older Epson printer (don't know the model number off the top of my head), and though it may not be as fast as more recent models, this black ink cartridge works perfectly for it. Ink is dark and high-quality for the price.

A haunting, legitimately unsettling film about many things (parenting, women's agency, grief) that, like any great horror film, focuses on building a terrifying atmosphere instead of relying on jump scares. Two amazing performances, anchored by first-time writer/director Jennifer Kent's confident direction. The Blu-ray has fantastic video/audio, and includes a handful of of behind-the-scenes featurettes, a lot of cast interviews, and most valuably, Kent's short film "Monster", which was the basis of many ideas she explores in The Babadook. Not a film for the easily disturbed, but not for the typical "blood-and-guts" horror junkie. Highly recommended.

Inherent Vice is yet another divisive film from a very divisive filmmaker, Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, The Master, Punch-Drunk Love). Those who do not fall into the rhythm of his latest, the first screen adaptation of Thomas Pynchon, will be stupefied at best, angry at worst. Those who can find the offbeat groove of the film, however, will be rewarded with a bevy of great comedic performances (led by Joaquin Phoenix continuing his unstoppable run of roles of the last few years), beautiful cinematography, and an eclectic late 60's soundtrack, both of which look and sound incredible on Warner Brothers' Blu-ray. The lack of in-depth special features is disappointing, a trio of short featurettes not matching the usual amount of behind-the-scenes materials the director brings to the home video releases of his films, but the film is strong enough to recommend on its own (and hopefully as an indicator of a release with more features in the future),
