I was looking at this product over a year ago, but was put off by the false alarm issue that many people reported with the 1st Gen model. The new model is slightly redesigned and the initial reviews reported that the false alarm issued appeared to have been fixed. After a fifth early morning false alarm from our Kidde system, I went out and bought eight Nest Protects to replace them.
The initial setup was nearly issue free. One of the eight devices could not be paired to the rest using the standard pairing process. After numerous attempts to "find" the device in question, the app instructed me to enter the SSID on the back of the detector and the setup was completed using a secondary process. The physical installation was easy as well; just screws, wire nuts, and my time.
We have had the eight Protects up and running for a month and have not had any issue with them. I have the path light off on all of them except for the one in the upstairs hallway; it provides a nice motion-activated nightlight outside of the bathroom. I wasn't sure if I would like that feature, but I have found it useful in that application.
I would have liked the list of programmed room name options to have been slightly more extensive (no "garage?") and I wish that the foam gasket that sits against the ceiling was white instead of black, which would have made it invisible between the white device and the white ceiling. These are both minor points, but this is a premium product (with pricing to match) so nitpicking is warranted.
Overall, I am pleased with them and I appreciate the connection to the app and my Nest thermostats.
