I wouldn't have picked this up except Duncan Jones directed it so I decided to give it a try.
If you are a fan of the video games you will probably like this movie.
The special effects are good but the dialogue is trivial and characters are stiff. The costumes seem too bright and would have been better if a thin coat of dust and grime had been applied to everything in this movie, it felt too clean. This had potential to expand into a series but felt rushed, derivative of other fantasy epics, and ultimately hollow. Maybe if they do a sequel, slow down and get some better character development for the humans. The CGI characters were well crafted and seemed to be the most human part of this movie.
A great movie featuring one of Will Smith's best performances. After screening this for friends on DVD for years it's good to finally have something to present in a larger screen in 1080p!
Good: quality and sound, the opening of this film is one of the greatest openings of motion picture in several decades. Check out how long it takes to get to dialogue. The characters are introduced to Sam Cooke and the montages are perfect. The Columbia lady brand running backwards is a nice touch.
Con: Commemorative edition seems to have added footage that is good for historical purposes, but deflates the story and stalls in parts. I would have preferred to have both versions available on the disc. I feel that the 2001 cut is the best. The tie in of Ali to Malcolm X feels at times like it focuses too much on the politics and not enough on Ali. What I loved so much about the first one is that here was a man who wasn't perfect but stood for what he believed in no matter what, a principled man and that is lost sometimes in the 2016 version.
