Another Alexa in the house

We have three Alexa devices in the house, one Echo and two Dots. We can turn on and off lights the TV, get news, set alarms and timers. It also plays music and had thousands of skill to preform specific things in your house. Alexa is now just part of our house I don't even think about it.

I have a couple of other motion detectors that have been working for years that I have mounted outside in a covered area that work fine. I wanted one to put one at the bottom of my steps by the kitchen. When someone goes down to the kitchen at night I wanted the kitchen light to turn on at a dim level. I wanted a small device that could sit on the desk at the bottom of the steps that did not look bad and this is exactly what I wanted. It picks up the motion and turns on the light before I enter the room and when I go back upstairs the light turns off five minutes later. No more feeling for the light switch next tot the disposal switch in the dark, I have turned that disposal many times feeling for the light switch. I could tell Alexa to turn on the light but that would disturb other people that are sleeping. This is what home automation is all about.

Easy motion detector to setup

I already had two working motion detectors and one cheap one that did not work. I wanted to get the Smartthings motion detector because it nice and small. It was quick and easy to connect and it works. It detects motion and non motion very fast. I have this one inside my house. I am going to use it to turn on my kitchen light when someone comes down the steps from the bedroom area at night when I have all the lights turned off. I will have it turn the light on at 20% so that it doesn't blink you but you can see. I will probably have it keep the light on for 5 minutes after no motion is detected to give time to do something in the kitchen before it turns off.

I added another Alexa to my house

I already had an Echo and a Dot in my house. I wanted another Dot to put in my theater room to work with the Harmony Hub that controls all of my components. Now I can just say "Alexa turn on the TV" and it turns on all of the components and set them to the correct settings to watch TV. I also have Smartthings a home automation system that controls my house so I can say "Alexa turn on the bedroom light" and the light turns on. Of course I also use it for timers, getting weather and news updates, playing music and running many of the skills that they have now. If you want to play music on the Dot you need to connect it to a better speaker by Bluetooth or wire for sound quality. The speaker in the Dot is fine for the voice.

Great computer not just a tablet

The Surface Pro 4 is a great small computer that replaces a laptop and even a desktop with the docking station. I love how fast it boots. I can just throw it in my small case and take it with me for the day or a trip. With my large monitor on my desktop I can use it for any application that used on my high end laptop. The screen resolution of the Surface Pro is excellent and it is able to drive a second monitor at high resolution. Overall it has met all of my expectations.

I bought this to open the garage door when my wife arrives home. If I use her cell phone then every time she returns home the garage door opens even if we are just out for a walk or I drive my car. I bought this to put in her car so it open the garage door when the car arrives home. My only issue is sometimes it is a little slow responding and the door does not open instantly but it usually opens when she is pulling into the driveway. I also have it text me when the door opens so if for some reason it has a false return and opens the door I will know about it. So far I have had no false returns.

Is this battery operated? And will it fit in a standard mailbox? Is it humidity and/or water resistant? I want a smart sensor to know when the mail is delivered.
Yes it is battery operated and it will fit in a mailbox. I am not sure about the humidity but it is probably not water resistant.I think you should consider a door sensor that is a simple open or close switch. When the door opens your system would know the same for when it closes. I know with my Smartthings I cold get it to send me a text when the mail box opens. The door sensor should also be cheaper. I have several door sensors that have been in place for well over a year that still show 100% battery level a motion detector that I put in at the same time is at 70%. You can do the same thing with the motion detector but I would consider the door sensor that is assuming that the mail person closes the door all the way.
