Vastly overrated at the time of its release (though it barely earned a dime at the box office), Barbarosa is a modestly enjoyable western starring the unlikely "team" of Willie Nelson and Gary Busey. Nelson is an outlaw, Busey his country-bumpkin buddy. They decide to ride together, since both are on the run from separate family feuds. Australian director Fred Schepisi uses these plot pegs to fashion a feature-length homage to John Ford, complete with breathtaking long shots of mountain ranges and endless flatlands. Everybody seems to be having so much fun in Barbarosa that its sudden bursts of violence come off as intrusive.
Julia Roberts headlines a strong ensemble cast as a wife betrayed in this humorously thoughtful study in family, love, and gossip, arriving on DVD from Warner Home Video. Presented in both the original 1.85:1 widescreen theatrical version (enhanced for 16 x 9 TVs) and standard 1.33:1 full-screen pan-and-scan, this release also features a closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack in addition to a French Dolby Digital 5.1 track and optional English and French subtitles. Aside from the standard interactive menus and scene access, a theatrical trailer is the sole extra feature on this disc.
