"Racial" identificaion and ethnic bigotry continue to be enduring challenges confronting American democracy. Costner believes so strongly in the message of this story that he not only starred in it, he became a producer.
This film will make any half-way decent person feel very uncomfortable, while bigots, of all stripes, will be falling over each other so that they might testify. A lot of ugly stereotypes and truisms are portrayed and wallowed in, right up to the moments (and there are many) when they are exploded, in small and big ways, for the counterproductive, if not corrosive, toxins that poison narrowing minds.
BLACK OR WHITE will challenge everyone about what the Right Things To Do in life are, as much as it will entertain with turns of tenderness, human frailty, socio-economic violence, fear and loathing of "the other" and ample doses of biting humor.
The script is very smartly written and the acting rings true across the board. Young Jillian Estell is an actor to keep an eye out for in the future.
This is a realistic family drama, but it's also a fable were hot button social issues are boiled down to the personal and inter-personal level, without disrespecting the larger social context (which the viewer needs to keep in her/his own mind, as in reading between the lines).

This is the "PRO" version of Samsung's 32GB microSDHC card, which is considerably faster than the Samsung "EVO" model. I use this card for on-board storage of video captured by a Samsung HD (1080p) webcam. No problems with data corruption, even with disorderly camera shutdowns, thus far.
A real steal whenever BestBuy puts this unit on sale.

The real world performance of Class 10 microSDHC cards vary wildly. I use this PNY unit as one of several removable storage cards in a Samsung Galaxy S4. While the PNY card should theoretically be significantly faster than the S4's Device Storage, unfortunately, google and Samsung have conspired to arbitrarily limit the speed of the microSD card slot, such that this very decent card comes nothing close to its theoretical write/read potential.
Other than that, data on the card is well kept. No problems with card storage corruption after many cycles of orderly mounting and dismounting.

Kudos to Jeremy Renner for producing and starring in this riveting adaptatoin of Nick Schou's _Kill_the_Messenger_ and Gary Webb's _Dark_Alliance_. It's a story about a hero's quest to tell a truth to the people, too truthful to be told, and the professonal and personal tolls that were taken as a result.
This film is an entertainment, not a documentary, but it hews close enough to the essential truths about Webb, the man, and his reportage on the links between the CIA, Nicaraguan "contras" and the importation of drugs and weapons into the US from Latin America.
That said, don't watch any film and pretend to learn history. Study history, for its own sake, and then allow that knowledge to inform your enjoyment of said film. That's where I'm coming from with my high praise for this film, based on a true story.
We all know, today, with 20-20 hindsight and subsequent, eventual corroborations that what Webb wrote about money for drugs to fund the contras, with CIA cover, if not complicity, was true. It was an ugly and inconvenient truth that put the San Jose Mercury News on the map as a newspaper of national and international standing. A truth that was then viciously spun by government and warped by rival corporate media into a weapon that ultimately destroyed Webb's career as a journalist and, finally, his life.
For me, the film passes the smell test to claim to be based on a true story.
One thing that I remember from then is how the SJ Mercury News luridly over-hyped Webb's story on its pages and then later threw Webb under the bus, caving into the official-sources-fueled professional retaliation by the LA Times, Washington Post and NY Times, who were all, embarassingly, scooped by Webb.
Webb, in fact, was following in the footsteps of an earlier "messenger," Robert Perry, who was eventually forced out of the Associated Press for attampting to cover the same story.
The film sports a who's-who of co-stars and is tastefully directed by Michael Cuesta. The extras on disc are worthwhile.
Not enough people got to see this film during its theatrical run. I sure didn't, but now I have remedied that.

This is one of the few times that Studio Ghibli's partnership with Disney, via Pixar, caused it to be beggared at the 2015 Academy Awards. As much as I enjoyed BIG HERO 6, THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA really deserved to win Best Animated Feature Film.
This is a lyrical and beautiful retelling of Japanese folktale, The Bamboo Cutter's Story, mainly from the perspective of the magical Lunar being who is eventually named Princess Kaguya.
While there is obvioously a lot of computer power behind the final film, the style of animation is hand-drawn/rotoscope and every bit as impressionistic as the most beautiful of watercolor paintings as found in any culture, not just Asian.
The story depicted is full of heart and love, best (if misguided) fatherly intentions, unconditionally nurturing motherhood, and a tragically misunderstood would-be human princess of celestial origins. Kaguya is always observant of Nature as she grows to become both wise and shrewd, but she is ultimately rendered powerless over her own destiny as a woman by the customs and culture of feudal Japan.
Alomg her journey from "discovered" forest sprite to womanhood, she encounters many friends among the common folk, a would-be soulmate, and the adventure of the beauty of the seasons/nature.
Not enough people got to see this film in theaters.
Correct that misfortune by treating yourself to a viewing on disc.

DVD Dr is a very difficult item to source via box-retail stores in my area. Luckily, BB stores do stock it.
The grinding wheel in this version is ONLY for use with DVD and CD discs.
(You can buy seperate grinding wheel kits for BluRay, PS3/4 and xBox discs and swap them in and out of the DVD Dr assembly as needed. This is necessary because each of these other disc form-factors have different operational disc thicknesses. You have been forewarned about this.)
The grinding wheel must be used on a clean and ALWAYS lightly mist-lubed (spray bottle & fluid included) scratched disc. The "polishing" process will leave a repaired CD or DVD with a uniform series of sligltly curved, radial stroke marks in the polycarbonate of the data side of the disc. This shallow scoring pattern is uniform, but it also looks "scary," in that it covers the entire disc. Nevertheless, previously unplayable or degraded scratched discs can be fully restored to normal service once repaired in this manner.
This kit CANNOT repair LABEL-SIDE disc damage (in fact, nothing can repair label-side disc damage).
After first full polishing pass, tamp dry the disc (with the provided microfiber cloth) and fully test playability. If problems persist, additional polishing cycles may be needed.
If more than one full rotational pass of polishing is needed to take out scratches, it is very prudent and wise to re-apply the lube spray per full rotation. Of course, less grinding is better than over grinding, but always grind in single, full disc revolutions with mist-lube per pass.
Supposedly, each grinding wheel can repair up to 60 discs, depending on the level of disc damage. (I remove and rinse the wheel with distilled water after each cleaning session and allow it to fully air dry before re-inserting it into the DVD Dr.)
I've thus far repaired 15 DVDs, in single revolution pass per disc, using the original grinding wheel and fully restored normal playback to all of them.
