Ekazumon's Reviews

Shoot great on-the-go photos and videos with this Motorola Moto E smartphone. The rear 8-megapixel camera takes crystal clear shots thanks to a large aperture that lets in more light and the color-balancing LED flash that ensures natural skin tones and consistent color. This Motorola Moto E smartphone comes unlocked for use with your choice of carriers.

A Budget Phone With Few Compromises & Great Value
on August 20, 2017

Design:
This phone despite being a phone with a removable back has managed to pull a modern smartphone look. The black has a great soft feeling plastic which feels great in the hand. The front facing fingerprint reader is also a wonderful touch for a phone that is barely over $100. The water-resistant design is a nice touch, but don't go dunking it into water anytime soon.
Display/Audio:
Overall, the display is excellent. The screen is very colorful and bright. The screen can also get decently dark as well. The screen is only 1280 x 720, but it is hardly noticeable when watching videos. Speakers are decent. Sound is faithful except for the highest volume settings where the audio can become slightly distorted. They sound pretty good for a phone in this price range.
OS/UI:
It is great to have a phone out of the box with Nougat (Android version 7). Moto's phones have always had a great OS because they are near stock android. The near vanilla android experience in itself worth it.
Camera:
The camera is possibly one of the greater aspects of the phone. The phone in general gets the proper exposure in light situations. The phones are rarely grainy and focuses on objects quickly. As with every camera, the camera weakens slightly in the low light department. HOWEVER, the camera does outperform many smartphones even some mid ranges in this department. The phone also has great controls for manual mode if you want to get the best picture. The front facing camera is also great and performs as expected.
Battery/Charging:
For the most part, the battery life of the Moto E4 is just average but solid. In the age of larger battery capacities and quick-charge/fast charging, the Moto E4 is basically adequate. The phone can easily get you through a full day, most likely due to the fact due to good battery management, lower screen resolution, brightness controls, etc. The batteries are also swappable, so that might be a bonus for some.
Storage/Memory:
The base storage is a bit lacking at 16GB. However, it is really good to know that the storage is expandable up to 128GB which is more than enough. The nice thing about expansion is that you can use the external storage as internal memory. I think the ram is decent enough considering the price of the product.
Processor/Performance:
Perhaps the biggest weakness of the Moto E4 is the processor. However, I have seen worse processors being used around this price-point so that is something to consider as well. Now if you do light gaming, emails, basic web browsing searches, this phone performs excellently. Things like basic streaming such as videos and Netflix performed well. However, with heavier duty games, the games will show noticeable signs of stuttering and/or frame-rate issues.
Other (Calls, Compatibility, Accessories, Firmware/Updates):
Call quality was great. No issues or distortions. The wonderful thing about this phone is that it is UNLOCKED and works with GSM and CDMA so basically all the carriers.
At the time of this review, there is only a decent amount of support for accessories. BE CAREFUL, the international version of this phone is different from the US version. Please lookout for this when choosing which accessories to buy. If you need some suggestions: I recommend for cases: Dretal or Otterbox and for screen protector: amFilm, Mr.Shield, or Supershield. The phone uses a standard micro-USB, so replacements are easy to find.
Moto has been generally fast and reliable about updating their phones. The phone should get at least 2 years of android updates.
Conclusion:
This phone is not the greatest in the world. HOWEVER, it may be the greatest phone for what it does at this price-point. The phone is cheap without being cheap. In a way, this phone is truly king in the under $150 category. My suggestion is to choose based on your needs and willingness to pay. It is great to see a phone with great value at this price-point. And hey, at least it has a headphone jack.

Stay connected with this Asus Zenfone 3 Max smartphone. The 4100 mAh battery has plenty of juice to get you through the workday and well into the night, while the beautiful 5.2-inch display provides an immersive viewing experience. This Asus Zenfone 3 Max smartphone has 16GB of internal storage to hold plenty of data.

Decent Phone At A Reasonable Price
on January 4, 2017

Design:
This phone definitely feels more premium than it actually looks. It has a great feeling aluminum alloy body with a 2.5D curved glass. It feels fairly lightweight. It also has a fingerprint sensor which is very responsive. It is great to see a phone with fingerprint sensor at this price range.
Display/Audio:
Overall, the display is excellent. The screen is nice and bright. The resolution of 1920 x 720 works well for this phone. The audio is decent enough. The sound is faithful at low volumes but can be distorted at louder volumes. The outdoor mode can get volumes to a decent level. Also, the placement of the speakers on the back can be accidently blocked with a hand so be careful.
OS/UI:
It is great to have a phone out of the box with Marshmallow. The UI, ZenUI, is a bit more difficult to measure. The UI is mixed with a combination of bloatware, useful features, and annoying quirks. Depending on the user, your mileage with the UI will vary greatly.
Camera:
The camera is decent for the price. The camera can take decent photos in well-lit conditions. However, too much light can cause a lot of noise. The low-light is fairly bad, but most phones struggle to do well in this category. However, it does a decent job for being under $200. Recordings and pictures were better than expected with a decent set of controls.
Battery/Charging:
The battery life on this device is great. It can easily get someone through a day easily with moderate usage. The main issue is that there is no quick/fast charging. On average, it takes 3.5+ hours to fully charge this phone with no usage. However, it is expected fact since the battery is so large. Would have been nice if it used USB type C as an early adopter but is understandable at this price.
Storage/Memory:
The base storage is a bit lacking at 16GB. However, it is really good to know that the storage is expandable up to 64GB which is decent enough. For me, the killer was the 2GB ram. At mid-2016 and onward, 3GB should be the budget minimum for ram, since that is the highest amount that this chipset accepts.
Processor/Performance:
The processor, at this price range, is acceptable. The MediaTek MT6737 was able to perform at some moderately high demanding apps with some frame rate drops. As such, it is decent with all basic functions. I would not recommend for users that require lots of processing power for his or her apps.
Other (Calls, Compatibility, Accessories, Firmware/Updates):
Call quality was great. No issues or distortions. This phone is GSM only. It does not work with CDMA (Sprint, U.S. Cellular, Verizon). This package does not come with accessories. Best Buy made a mistake in the listings. There is very little 3rd party support for things like cases and screen protectors other than Chinese vendors. Asus is notoriously slow in releasing firmware updates. However, it is supposed to get an Android Nougat Update 7.0.0 in Q1 2017.
Conclusion:
There is no doubt that this is a decent phone. However, the question is: is this the phone for you? It really depends on your preferences. People that require high levels of computing power should look elsewhere, but everyone else can find something they like here. Is the best value? That is a hard question to answer as companies like Motorola, Honor/Huawei, ZTE, OnePlus, and Alcatel have brought tremendous value to the budget smartphone market. Because of this, I would say you are getting what you paid for. That isn't necessarily a bad thing as the bar has been significantly raised this year (2016).
My suggestion is to choose based on your needs and willingness to pay. 2016/2017 has shown that you can't go wrong no matter what price range you choose.
FYI, it occasionally goes on sale for 129.99.
