Stylish performer

Summary: The ASUS Blue Cave wireless router delivers on WiFi coverage and performance, while looking good and being easy to configure.
The Good: Excellent and consistent WiFi coverage at 5 and 2.4GHz. Actually outperforms a couple of WiFi routers with higher "rated" speeds that I have tried. While the range is not quite as good as some other routers, the Blue Cave's connections are more reliable and usable at the "fringe" of reception. Offers fully-featured, old-school web browser-based configuration in a world where everyone is forcing you to use their "app". Great file sharing performance from connected USB drives, and supports Time Machine. Rock-solid connections with no interruptions, hiccups or headaches. 80MHz channel mode works properly with iPhone/iPad devices (this has been an issue with other routers/APs). Looks stylish!
The Bad: Configuration is a little tricky for beginners - the ASUS web interface offers a lot of options and not all of them are clearly explained, so some features require some trial-and-error to get working as expected.

Incredible noise cancellation - but too much bass
on June 10, 2018
Posted by: wrbluepearl
from Whitesboro, NY
Summary: The Sony WF-SP700N enters the increasingly crowded "totally wireless" headphone market with some unique capabilities. Unfortunately, while the sound is very detailed and noise cancellation is fabulous, the WF-SP700N listening experience is completely ruined by the overabundance of bass.
Background: While I wouldn't consider myself to be a headphone snob, I'm a big fan of a good pair of cans. I use four different bluetooth headsets on a regular basis, as none of the ones I've tried "do it all" - provide noise cancellation for travel, have good battery life, let ambient sounds in when I want them, are easy to put in and take out, and offer good voice quality for phone calls. I listen to a broad variety of music, and I delight in hearing multiple layers of instrumentation and details of performances. I tested the WF-SP700Ns with an Apple iPhone 7 running iOS 11, with Amazon Music as my audio source, set to high quality mode.
The Good: The WF-SP700N is actually very good at several things - the noise cancellation features are top-notch, and give you control over the amount of ambient sound you want to include, including just voices or all ambient sounds. The actual musical reproduction is very detailed across all frequencies. Offers a choice of "sound quality" or "connection priority" modes, allowing you to choose extra range at the expense of audio quality, or vice-versa.
The Bad: Unfortunately, there's one glaring problem with the WF-SP700N: sooo much bass. Sooooooooo much bass. While the bass is detailed (it's not a generic one-note bass like you get in cheaper headphones) there's soooo much bass it totally overwhelms everything else. This brings me to my next complaint - the Sony music app has a section for EQ settings for the WF-SP700N, but it's only a 5-band EQ, and only offers preset EQ settings, none of which actually made the headphones sound better. <sigh> (I suppose it's an improvement over the last Sony product I tried, where the EQ settings in the Sony music app just did nothing.) When used in "connection priority" mode, the sound quality is very noticeably compromised, with a faint crackling sound added to the audio. The battery life seems to be kind of mediocre, about three hours in my testing (though that matches Sony's advertised battery life), and the charging case seems kind of flimsy for a pair of headphones in this price range. There are also strange little quirks, like a delay when you change the volume level on your phone, and noticeable amplifier "pops" when you start or stop music (presumably, Sony turns the amplifiers off to save battery when there's no music playing).

Flexible, Versatile and Portable PA System
on May 29, 2018
Posted by: wrbluepearl
from Whitesboro, NY
Summary: The Bose S1 is one of the best-sounding portable PA systems out there, with Bluetooth connectivity as an added bonus.
Background: While I'm not currently in the music industry, I supported musical performances (including rock bands, jazz bands, and musical theater) through college and well into my adult life. I've used a variety of PA and monitor systems from a number of companies, miked singers and guitar cabinets and pianos, and helped record and master audio for college bands. I would not call myself an expert, but I know my way around a mixing console and understand the headaches of live performance audio.
Introduction: The Bose S1 is an interesting piece of gear, because it fits a couple of niches really well: it makes a great portable, battery-powered PA system for busking or impromptu performances, and it can serve as a monitor speaker for a vocalist or acoustic guitarist as part of a house PA system. I've used other portable PA systems, and they were almost universally heavier without being as loud or as clear as the Bose. I've been using this primarily as a PA system for outdoor presentations with a wireless microphone.
The Good: Flexibility - it supports three inputs, two of which can take either a 1/4" guitar/bass/keyboard input or an XLR connector from a microphone. The third input takes either line level signals or Bluetooth. The first two inputs have treble, bass and reverb controls, as well as a couple of pre-set eq settings for direct-in guitar or microphone that work surprisingly well...and it all sounds *good*. Versatility - it's shaped so it can lay on the floor angled up like a floor monitor, it can stand on end like a "normal" speaker, and it has a mounting holes on the bottom for a standard 35mm speaker stand, letting you use this one speaker for multiple applications. It has a line out connection, so you can connect it to a second S1, an audio recorder, or the house PA system. The built-in battery lets you go for several hours in a location without power. Portability - it has a carrying handle built-in on the top, and it's lightweight and easy to move from your house to your car to the performance.
The Bad: Bluetooth volume is controlled only by the device connected to it - while I normally regard this as a good thing, the minimum volume setting on your phone may still be a little high for your audience. Would be nice to have a battery gauge, rather than having to double-tap the Bluetooth connection button and count the number of times the LED flashes.

Might work well for some users
on April 15, 2018
Posted by: wrbluepearl
from Whitesboro, NY
Summary: The Mohu Beam may work well for some users in areas where you're close to the tower or have good line-of-sight, but for any kind of marginal reception situation, you'll need something heavier-duty.
Background: I'm a long-time cord cutter, having walked away from cable in 2005. We've been on antenna-based over-the-air (OTA) television since then, and it's worked well for us. In the modern TV era, the ATSC television standard lets each television transmitter carry multiple program streams, so even in an area where there are only three or four stations, you can easily get more than a dozen "channels". The location where we live shouldn't be bad for television reception, as we have more or less clear line-of-sight to the transmitters, and they aren't far away (the more distant transmitter is 18mi out, the nearer transmitter is 6mi away). However, getting good, clean, reliable OTA signals isn't as easy as it looks. We've settled on a commercially-available UHF double-bowtie antenna, feeding a pair of SiliconDust HDHomeRun receivers (for DVR use) as well as two televisions.
Test setup: For this test, I connected the Mohu Beam to a spare HDHomeRun 3 receiver that I have, using one of the 6ft cables included with the Beam. I placed the beam next to the current double-bowtie antenna and used the HDHomeRun signal meter app running on iOS to monitor the signal strength and quality. Note that I did NOT use the included amplifier - amplifiers add noise to the signal, which reduces signal quality, and are intended to overcome loss from cable runs, not compensate for insufficient gain at the antenna.
Test results: The Beam is as sensitive to orientation as the double-bowtie UHF antenna I normally use. If the towers you need to pick up signals from are all in roughly the same direction - or are 180° apart - the Beam will probably work well for you...assuming you aim the antenna appropriately. The "example" setup, with the antenna mounted on the wall above a television, will work only if that orientation points the antenna in the right direction - otherwise, you'll need to use the kickstand and set the antenna on top of something so you can turn it to face the tower. Signal strength was disappointing; I plotted reception on two different stations in the Utica, NY market (which are both roughly the same direction from my location, though one is about twice as far away) and signal strength was barely adequate for the HDHomeRun to maintain lock. The Beam seemed to be very sensitive to multipath interference (from cars driving past) and fading (from trees and weather), noticeably more so than the double-bowtie. On the attached plots, I plotted signal quality for both the double-bowtie (magenta and purple lines) as well as the Mohu Beam (orange and blue), note that the signals from the double-bowtie are passing through a three-way balanced splitter (basically, divided by three) before getting to the HDHomeRun, yet are still noticeably stronger and more consistent. No amplifiers were used in either case.
Conclusions: Once again, we find that the "distance" rating on antennas is basically meaningless, and that classic antenna designs like the UHF double-bowtie are still around because they actually work. The Mohu Beam looks attractive and appears to be well-made, but has about the same amount of gain as one of the old wire single bowtie antennas that came with your rabbit ears. It may work fine in denser urban areas closer to the transmitters, but in our semi-rural area, it just didn't have enough gain to do the job.

Good bass offset by lackluster highs
on March 17, 2018
Posted by: wrbluepearl
from Whitesboro, NY
Bottom Line: Gets surprisingly loud, features good bass but that's offset by lackluster highs and a finicky phone app. Light show feature is gimmicky and doesn't seem to have anything to do with the music that's playing, and requires use of a phone app to turn it off.
Background: My wife thinks I'm crazy, but I'm always on the hunt for a better Bluetooth speaker. I've got them all, from tiny keychain speakers to big honkin' party speakers. A speaker for every scenario, right? These speakers get used while I'm working, while I'm working out, or while I'm relaxing by the fire pit. Heck, I used to use them in my car because my car didn't have a working stereo system! I wouldn't say I'm a golden ear by any stretch of the imagination, but I am pretty picky about audio quality.
The good: The low end on this speaker sounds pretty darned good, as one would expect from the company that introduced the world to the "Mega Bass" feature. While it can't do justice to the low-end drone from a set of Moog Taurus pedals or reproduce the electronic thud of a TR-808 bass drum, you're in pretty good shape at the low end. The speaker supports a couple of different audio modes which can be set from the phone app, and the 'live' mode sounds especially good - it widens the soundstage and delivers sound that should be able to come from a speaker eight inches long. Bluetooth range is fine. There are several pre-set audio equalization settings available in the phone app as well. Battery life was pretty good, running for eight hours without recharging. Includes a USB-A port for charging an external device, like your phone for longer music sessions. Charges from a standard Micro-USB port, which is a big plus. The speaker is well-made, and the fabric covering feels durable and high-quality.
The bad: I've tried a number of Sony Bluetooth wireless speakers over the years, and unfortunately, they've all shared the same shortcoming - lackluster high frequency response. The highs just sound dead and lifeless, even if you run the speaker for 10-15 hours to break it in. This speaker features Sony's light-up party system, which confuses me as much on this speaker as it did on others. Unlike, say, the classic "color organs" where different colors would be activated by different audio frequencies, the Sony speakers (even their larger and more expensive party speakers) do something different...essentially they seem to randomly flash the strobes on the front or change color, but not really in time to the music. The color scheme can be changed through the phone app, but that doesn't affect how the lights are sequenced - still the same, apparently random patterns. The light show can be turned off, but again, that requires use of the phone app; a button on the speaker would have been nice. Finally, the custom/user eq settings in the phone app appear to do...nothing. The preset ones do affect the sound, but the custom eq setting seems not to.

Luxurious noise-canceling headphones
on March 3, 2018
Posted by: wrbluepearl
from Whitesboro, NY
Bottom Line: luxurious build, Sennheiser sound quality, noise-canceling functionality that makes the rest of the world disappear, coupled with all-day battery life. Yeah, these are NICE headphones.
Introduction: I've listened to many Bluetooth headphones over the years, and the audio quality they convey has improved considerably. I started with the Motorola S9 and made many stops along the way. I tested these with high bit-rate AAC files from Apple Music or highest-quality iTunes rips from CD, with music streamed from an Apple iPhone 7 and an Apple Retina Macbook.
The Good:
These are by far the most luxurious headphones I've ever used, with soft leather ear cups, brushed stainless leather-covered headband, and high-quality plastic earpiece bodies. Build quality is impeccable, with no sharp edges or visible mold marks. Sound quality is very good, with excellent detail throughout the musical range. Bass is very detailed and well-balanced. Range is very good - even when used as a bluetooth headset for calls, the connection was stable and usable 20ft away, through two walls. Noise cancellation works very well - without music playing, constant noise around you disappear, though you can still hear people speaking. With the music on, the rest of the world disappears - you can't hear anything going on around you.
The Bad:
Bass is well-balanced, meaning it's not very loud. While not an issue for me (it sounds realistic) the lows will sound weak compared to other headphones. Slight but audible hiss from the noise-canceling system which is noticeable when music isn't playing. (Fortunately, unlike other headphones I've tried, the hiss becomes inaudible once the music starts.)

Most of Photoshop, without the subscription
on January 20, 2018
Posted by: wrbluepearl
from Whitesboro, NY
Summary: Photoshop Elements has a lot to recommend it - it has a significant percentage of Photoshop CC's capabilities, without the annual subscription. It adds several "consumer-oriented" features like opening closed eyes in photos, which may turn out to be lifesavers.
Introduction: I've been using Photoshop since version 1, when I was introduced to it as a member of my high school newspaper staff. In the subsequent 25+ years, many would-be competitors have come and gone; some of them were worthy, but many were cheap knockoffs. I've used Photoshop for everything from cropping to intricate multi-layer compositing, color correction to creating web page mockups.
The good: As versatile and reliable as ever. Takes advantage of the latest hardware (e.g., uses the computer's video card to accelerate tasks when possible), and most transformations and edits happen quickly. Many of the consumer-oriented features are genuinely useful, such as the tools for automatically straightening photos.
The bad: A large, deep piece of software, for which many features have a steep learning curve. Some features, such as the tool for opening closed eyes, are very tricky and time-consuming to use (that feature requires that you have a different image with the person's eyes open, which Photoshop uses as a reference). Adobe Elements Organizer works fairly well, but is a separate piece of software from Photoshop - this may confuse users accustomed to photo management apps like Apple Photos - and the transition between Organizer and Photoshop isn't seamless.
The ugly: Relies on Adobe Camera Raw for loading raw camera files. ACR is clunky and very limited, especially compared to more full-featured RAW converters like Lightroom.

Only way to do PDF forms
on January 19, 2018
Posted by: wrbluepearl
from Whitesboro, NY
Summary: If you create PDF forms for business, there's really no other way to do it than with Adobe Acrobat Pro. While there are other applications out there that supposedly let you create/edit PDF forms, or modify PDF documents, Acrobat Pro is the only one that will always work, 100% of the time, end of discussion. The addition of the new Adobe Scan app for your smartphone, which integrates with the desktop application through Adobe Creative Cloud, makes for a great pairing for managing, OCRing and manipulating scans.
Introduction: I've used Adobe PDF documents for more than 20 years - the ability to exchange binders and books of technical documentation for a couple of files on my computer's desktop was very liberating. As someone who generates software documentation, the ability to e-mail a file to someone - and KNOW the person would be able to open it, with zero problems or concerns - revolutionized the way I worked. It was suddenly easy and inexpensive to distribute documents to our customers as soon as it was changed or updated.
I tested Acrobat Pro on macOS High Sierra (10.13), where I've used it for document scanning, form creation, and document signing.
Pros: The only true complete PDF authoring and editing application. Built-in OCR functionality generates usable text (and even some usable punctuation) quickly from scanned documents. Works smoothly with scans from my Fujitsu S1300i scanner. Has a full complement of form-building and creation tools. Performs high-quality document conversions from other file formats (e.g., Microsoft Word) that include extensive document features, such as the PDF table of contents, that are left out by Word's own conversion routines.
Cons: Application is built according to Adobe's generic OS-agnostic design, which comes across as dated and clunky on both Windows and macOS because it doesn't use native UI widgets. (For example, drag-and-drop for files does not work on macOS.) Document conversions go through Adobe Document Cloud, and are not done locally - this may be an issue in certain fields (e.g., healthcare) where there are concerns about privacy. Also, there wasn't any way to adjust quality settings on the conversion from Word to PDF, so while the finished PDF was very small in size, it came at the expense of very compressed images with lots of compression artifacts and lost details, limiting the usefulness of the document.

Disappoing "totally wireless" headphones
on January 1, 2018
Posted by: wrbluepearl
from Whitesboro, NY
Summary: The Epic Air headphones sound good, but comfort, size, weight and charging case issues left me disappointed.
Background: I've used several sets of Bluetooth wireless headphones over the past three years, but they've all involved a "horsecollar," a wire connecting the left and right earpieces, or a traditional "over the head" design. I've also had an extensive collection of wired headphones, from in-ear monitors to mid-range over-the-ear phones. Headphones were tested with an Apple iPhone 7, using Amazon Music set to high quality.
The Good: Once you get correct the ear hooks and ear gels selected, the Epic Airs actually sound quite good, with detailed bass and clean highs. Clean highs are a particular accomplishment, as several other bluetooth headphones lack detail in the high frequencies, or had audible aliasing or distortion. Battery life is good for this type of headphone, lasting four-six hours depending on volume, type of music, distance to audio source, etc. Includes a unique self-storing USB cable that wraps around the charging case.
The Bad: Takes some experimentation to get the correct ear gels selected, though this is a problem common to any headphones that use an in-ear monitor type design.
The Ugly: While the ear gels and hooks have a conventional fit, the Epic Airs have a large "body" that I found pushed uncomfortably against the back of my ear. Unfortunately, I could not get an arrangement of ear hooks the allowed them to fit comfortably into my ears. The earpieces are also surprisingly heavy, weighing noticeably more than other JLab headphones with a connecting cable between the left and right earpieces. The charging case is also fairly bulky compared to other totally wireless headphones (due to the design of the Epic Air earpieces); annoyingly, the battery level indicator on the case didn't work, so I never knew how much charge it had left.

Lightweight, well-made, good battery life
on November 7, 2017
Posted by: wrbluepearl
from Whitesboro, NY
4Summary: A straightforward, easy-to-use beard trimmer that features good battery life, light weight, and a good-quality adjustable guard for setting beard length.
Introduction: My wife has ordered me to retain some sort of facial hair at all times...which is fine with me, because I hate shaving! I've used several beard trimmers over the years, some definitely better than others; this is the third Norelco trimmer I've used, which reflects the overall good luck I've had with the brand.
The Good: Trims without aggressively "pulling" on hairs, something that's been a problem with other shavers. Unique blade design means it cuts "coming and going" - which is especially handy when trimming those stray hairs on your cheek or neck. The flat blade system also means you can lay the cutter flat against your skin and slide it along to get a nice, close trim. The adjustable guard has fine increments and does a good job of staying at the set length while trimming, something else that's been a problem with other beard trimmers. It's waterproof, so you could use it in the shower, though I have not done so. Provides a numeric battery level gauge, rather than just a "low battery" indicator, and lets you "travel lock" the trimmer so it doesn't run itself down in your suitcase.
The Bad: Mostly minor complaints - uses a non-standard charging port, would be better if it used micro-USB so you didn't have to bring an extra charger with you on a trip. (Several of Norelco's competitors have made this switch already.) Replaceable blades are a little pricey, particularly if you use the trimmer a lot; Norelco says that a blade set lasts "four months" if you do a "complete shave" twice a week.

This may work better, simply because the Orbi uses a separate radio for communication between the router and the extenders, instead of having to use the same radio to talk to phones/tablets/laptops and to the extender. My house is 150yrs old and has plaster walls, and the Orbi has no trouble getting signal from the base unit to the extender.

I live somewhat in the country and most internet providers do not come out here to my house. Will Orbi be able to replace DSL?

The Orbi gives you wireless access to your existing Internet service - it would work with your DSL, not take its place.

Why do I need to turn off the fios wireless radio? I want to use the orbi on floors 1 & 2 and use the fios wifi in the basement. I have 75/75 Mbps service and how much degradation will result from using orbi as an access point?

I suspect that Netgear recommends turning off the FIOS radio to reduce interference in the 2.4GHz band, due to the limited number of channels available for WiFi there. Based on my own experiences, I doubt you will see any degradation in performance with the Orbi - I'm typically seeing WiFI connection speeds north of 200mbps everywhere in my house, and the extender-to-base station channel is supposed to be good for 800mbps.
