Fits nicely into the overall Terminator cannon
on July 26, 2017

The stories in these two seasons follow after T2 and are built on those events. Fans of the Terminator film series know that each new film tends to deviate somewhat from prior films, but usually in a more-or-less believable fashion. T3 mentions Sarah Connor's death from cancer, and this is referenced here when the characters time jump from 1997 to 2007 in the first episode. The new time jump changes her having died earlier than the new timeline. Other references also tie in with various aspects of the films, even while possibly changing them.
In the TV series, Summer Glau is the Arnold replacement -- reprogrammed terminator sent back to protect John Connor. I first saw her in Firefly and then later in a few other TV series. All the roles I saw her play had a common thread -- she played a quiet but creepy character. Her terminator here matches as well. If you're a Summer Glau fan, you'll enjoy this role.
When I play BDs/DVDs for TV shows, I usually prefer to use a Play All option to string the episodes together for binge watching. These BDs do this automatically, and don't even have a menu to select individual episodes. When the disc starts up, it automatically plays all episodes (after the requisite FBI and other early screens). If you want to play a single episode, you'll need to chapter skip forward to the one you want and then stop (or go to menu) when it's done.
Even though the disc doesn't start at a menu, it does have one. When the episodes finish, you get to the Top Menu. You can also select it from the appropriate remote button. Bonus Features include things like deleted scenes (called Terminated Scenes) and Making Of features. Audition recordings for three main characters are in the first season's discs as well as dance practice for Summer Glau (who is mentioned as an accomplished ballerina).
The first season had only 9 episodes but the second had 22. If you buy these as a set, the (sale) price is pretty reasonable.

Just as fun as the earlier entries in the series

Other than possibly thinking the original film was best, just because of the originality factor, this latest entry in the series matches the earlier ones in quality and fun. (Watching clips from all five together, you can even see how the animation has improved through the few years since the first film.)
The film includes the expected Scrantics (Scrat antics), a few new characters and old friends (outside the core group) from previous films. One character is portrayed by Neil Degrasse Tyson (a famous scientist for any who may still not have heard of him) and he also narrates one of the Bonus Features, describing the scientific accuracy (or lack thereof) in the story elements. One of the other BFs presents the entire story of all the films in just a few minutes.
The 3D is significant is places, though it doesn't fall into the class of gimmicky. I think it really adds to the enjoyment, but I also like 3D more than some others proclaim. If you're not a 3D fan, though, you probably won't be buying the 3D edition.

Interesting story but may disappoint purists

If you just want an interesting SF story, this should fill the bill. But if you're a staunch Asimov fan, you may be disappointed, or even possibly upset. The story here is only loosely connected to Asimov's Robot stories. The end credits say it is "Suggested by" Asimov's works (not "Based on"). The film does mention the 3 laws of robotics, and evens mentions the 0th law, but does so in a way that isn't exactly the way Asimov portrayed it. The film stretches things rather severely to show robots acting against man in opposition to the laws.
The single BluRay disc contains both 3D and 2D versions of the film. It comes up in 3D mode by default (for menus), and asks which version you want to watch when you choose to play. If you don't have a 3D setup, you can guess the blurred text well enough to make it work. Then again, if you don't have a 3D setup, you probably wouldn't buy this edition anyway.
There are no Bonus Features on the BluRay disc. If you really like such additions, and are considering upgrading from the DVD release which had numerous features, then don't worry -- the DVD included in the set is the same one as the DVD release and has all the same features on it. So it just means the BFs you get are all DVD quality instead of HiDef. But you don't lose them.

A fun film, but could be scary for small kids
on May 19, 2017

My friend's kids (9 and 10) were worried the film might be too scary for them, but they did watch it and did enjoy it. But it's probably not for younger kids or those more sensitive to this sort of thing.
The film is pretty typical Tim Burton, except that Johnny Depp isn't in it. I haven't read the book so I can't directly compare it, but reading about the book on Wiki suggests it doesn't stray too far from it. As expected, the film is filled with lots of CGI effects.
The BluRay has no Bonus Features in 3D, but the 2D disc has over 2 hours worth. One of the features alone is just over an hour. I haven't watched all the features yet, but they seem to both about the material of the film and about its making.

Not your typical Science Fiction film
on May 19, 2017

Verified Purchase:Yes
This film is more "pure" Science Fiction than many of what passes for SciFi these days, which is often more action/adventure (in space, or with aliens, or some other SciFi trope) than SF. There are aliens here, but this film is more of an exploration of the concept of time. (I won't say anything more, to avoid spoilers.) The casual SciFi flick watcher may be a bit confused, but will probably enjoy the film for its other aspects. Veteran SF readers will be pleased.
The BluRay has over 80 minutes of Bonus Features (2D only), perusing topics related to the science behind the idea as well as the making of the film.
