Can run a 3 Screen Virtual Pinball Cabinet!
on April 7, 2024
Posted by: MrPHD
First thing you immediately notice when unpacking the laptop - IT IS SO HEAVY! At almost 5 lbs, it's one of the heaviest laptops I've owned. My other laptop I constantly use is under 4lbs, so having this almost at 5, it's very noticeable - but that's okay - because I'm not using it to carry around! The 2nd thing you'll notice, no clearly marked power button OR trackpad borders. I will say that Dell did a decent design job with the power button - it is not flush with the keys, which means you won’t be accidentally pressing it and turning off the machine if it was. The power button also does double duty with also being the fingerprint scanner. The last and most annoying thing I noticed, the camera doesn't have a privacy cover. This is a dumb Dell stance and all laptops should come with a privacy cover, like most HPs.
Years ago I bought a virtual pinball machine, which came with a very minimal specs small form factor desktop pc that fit inside of it. Over the years, I've had to replace the PC, but any non-SFF pc's aren't going to fit, and will have to be placed outside of the machine, which is very annoying and not great looking. I've tried a different Dell Gaming Laptop (prior to current PC) but it quickly overheated and froze often, so it was not a viable replacement.
That brings us to this new Dell XPS 16, though not specifically sold as a "gaming" machine, it sure does have the specs and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 to call it one. With 3 USB-C (Thunderbolt 4) ports, a small dongle w/both a USB-A and HDMI connector is included with the laptop. My VPin has 3 different monitors, so the main display is connected through the HDMI on the little dongle, and I have a Dell Dock 3100 connected to the USB-A port, which gives me 2 more HDMI and DisplayPort connectors - for my 2nd and 3rd screens. And it works well! The previous Dell gaming machine did NOT handle the dock or 3rd monitor very well, which was unfortunate.
I use both Steam and Epic to play both Pinball FX3(Steam) and Pinball FX (Epic) to run the games. The Dell is powerful enough to run the tables smoothly (again, unlike the previous Dell Gaming laptop) and the buttons (attached by USB) run without lag both physically and visually (in game). This makes me so happy, because now I can ditch the giant PC and leave the laptop INSIDE the machine, freeing up space around the pinball machine itself.
So if you're looking for a really beefy PC to power your virtual pinball machine and do not want to put a large PC inside of it, the Dell XPS 16 more than qualifies and essentially future proof's your VPin for 5-10 years.
Pros:
Power Button/Fingerprint scanner not flush with the rest of the keys, I'm not accidentally pressing it!
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050!!!
Runs games very smoothly
Includes small dongle with HDMI and USB-A connector
Authentically full power workstation that is portable
Cons:
No webcam privacy cover
heavy
No real Function keys (so if you use those for shortcuts, I don’t know how that works!) The top keys are lit touch keys (like Apple? but dumber)
Runs hot
Keyboard is backlit, but it's just on and off (HP/Microsoft laptops have 3 different brightness levels, which should be standard)
A couple of times that screen shutoff (as if to go to screensaver/idle) while I was actively using it. Not sure what that is about yet

Portable Standup Desk w/Keyboard&Trackpad? I'm in!
on March 23, 2024
Posted by: MrPHD
First thing I noticed was the nice little packaging of it. Love that it's all self-contained into one little booklet that includes the charging cable, the trackpad (I LOVE TRACKPADS!!) and the keyboard.
As soon as I switched the keyboard on, my laptop immediately saw it, asked if I wanted to connect to it. I clicked "Connect" and it told me to enter in a randomly generated passcode and press enter on the keyboard. After doing so, keyboard was working. For the trackpad, it also instantly saw it and asked if I wanted to connected, and 2 seconds later, both keyboard or trackpad fully functional.

Now I love my Surface Laptop Studio keyboard and trackpad, but having this propped up higher without an additional large pop up/standup desk I have, this keyboard/trackpad is just as good! The only thing that would've made it perfect is having a numeric keypad on it, but the laptop also doesn't have that, and would obviously extend the width / weight of the keyboard.
My standup desk measures 19.3"D x 25.6"W x 10.6"H that's a large surface area. The Casa Popup is 1.141" x 9" x 11", it's tiny and does more!
As an IT pro, I often go into my company satellite offices and use a generic computer to work on for the day, and we don't have trackpads, I'm the only person that uses one, so this gives me another unintended benefit - a portable keyboard/trackpad that I can take with me in my backpack!
Pros:
Very small footprint, can fit in my laptop bag
Long battery life
The colors! My backpack/motorcycle/shoes/phone are all green, so Classic Chic matches my color scheme
Great feeling keyboard/touchpad
Extremely easy to connect, almost automatic (Windows 11)
Semi-Cons:
Has a bit of weight to it (not so much of a con but an FYI)
Can seem pricey - but a very large standing desk is in this range without keyboard/trackpad
No USB-C power brick for included cable - but in 2024, how do you NOT have one already?
First charge took a few hours

Beginner Coffee drinker, this makes things easy!
on March 14, 2024
Posted by: MrPHD
I've recently started to make some coffee, but I have limited kitchen space, so I've just been using some instant, which isn't as instant/easy (again, due to space).
This is a bit overkill for just me, but with that said, this works out easier for me! Bonus since all my friends/visitors drink coffee, so now I can finally make some coffee w/baileys after hours and keep them coming! I like that it comes with a permanent filter, I like that you can easily set the size of the coffee mugs, which I do have all sorts of sizes so it's great to customize it per serving.
Since my previous ways of making coffee was a pain, I'm not able to make coffee daily and not be so stressed about everything I was doing previously to the Ninja. I'm sure others will find this as a normal machine, but for someone who has never had a coffee machine, this is great. It also comes with a 12 cup carafe, which I use when guests are over, and simply use it as a single cup on a daily basis. This pretty much covers all my coffee needs.
Pros: very simply to use, 12 cup water tank/carafe, easy to clean (permanent filter) and options to adjust it over ice, pull up cup holder when carafe not in use. Easy to read / adjust cup size. Very quiet

Cons: A little to quiet to alert you when it's done. If I'm not within 1 room of it, I don't hear the beep that it's stopped pouring. Not *that* big of a deal!

Simple PS5 capture, just not if you use a headset
on February 13, 2024
Posted by: MrPHD
I completely misunderstood what this device would do - I was under the impression I could plug it my PS5 and into my ipad/pc and it would recording my fornite/pinball games and include the audio chat with my friends without any extra software, along with just streaming my games into Discord so my friends can see me whatever I'm playing.
Sadly, upon setting this all up, I realized the flaw - this won't natively work with headsets - because the PS5 doesn't do 2 audio outputs. If I'm wearing a headset, then there is no sound on the stream. I could get around this by streaming the game and sound into discord, and then having others on discord audio, and then I can hear both games AND friends, but then I won't get the audio of the chat. So that rules out Fornite (for the way I play). This does allow my to stream my pinball tournaments right into discord, but not if I wear headsets (which I don't need headsets to play).
It did not work connecting to my ipad (latest generation, just purchased), but that doesn't matter, because again, it wouldn't get my chat anyways.
I would be able to record audio if i used different software, but that isn't what I wanted to do, I wanted to keep it simple.
I tried to see if I could stream my old DVD movies (from the PS5) onto discord, movies that aren't available online for cowatching, but in order to get the capture device to work, you have to turn of HDCP. Once you turn off the HDCP, you can no longer open the DVD player, because of digital rights.
So it does what it says it does, fairly easy to setup (turning off HDCP is the biggest step), it just doesn't do what *I* wanted to do!

Convenient way to charge phone and watch on trips!
on November 30, 2023
Posted by: MrPHD
I received this 1 day too late, I had ordered this for 2 trips, didn't get it in time for first trip, but at least I'll have it for my longer trip. Why is it important? Because it's 1 cable and 1 power brick!
On my first trip, I had to plug in both the cable for my watch charger into a USB-C power brick, then I had to plug in a lightning cable in a USB-A power brick, to charge my Iphone. It's very annoying to have to bring 2 power bricks with you, it's just extra things you can lose!
You only need 1 USB-C power for the 2 in 1 Magnetic Charging Travel Kit. You plug in the phone charger inside the device itself (with room to wrap the cord around it) and then you use the USB-C cord included with the travel kit - to plug into a USB-C power brick. Just 1 brick! Both watch and iphone will charge at the same time when it's folded out, and then you can simply fold it in and place it in your travel bag. Super convenient.
Pros:
Cheap! only requires 1 power brick
very small and can fit easily in your pocket or luggage
Can prop watch at an angle so you can see the display
Has space to wrap watch cord around
Cons:
Feels a bit cheap
The phone magnet heats up pretty quickly - in comparison to my current stand

Cheap looking, but feels better than Apple's
on November 19, 2023
Posted by: MrPHD
It doesn't show on the instructions on how to take off your current band, just put on, so before you buy it, be aware there is a tiny slim button on the back of the watch that will release the band!
Easy to put on, I was worried that it would look and feel cheap in comparison to my original Apple Watch Olive Green Band, it does look a little cheap, but guess what - it doesn't irritate my skin!
2 problems this nylon band solved was it doesn't irritate my skin, and I don't have to wake up in the middle of the night to adjust it. The Apple Watch band have set spaced out holes, which I have to adjust depending on my hydration levels. With the nylon band, I can just make it a little loose and it's enough that I don't have to readjust! That alone makes this worth it.
Pros:
Easy to use/adjust
No set holes for spacing
Inexpensive
Cons:
The band looks super tiny (but stretches) - at the max expanding length, is only a bit more than my wrist - meaning I wonder if it will fit really thick wrists - but it works for me!

Excellent Secondary/Travel work machine
on November 1, 2023
Posted by: MrPHD
I'm a pretty big fan of Microsoft products - I loved my Surface Pro 2, and then the Surface Pro 4, and now my main machine is the Surface Laptop Studio, which so far is the best Surface product I've owned. However, do I really want to travel with such an expensive laptop? Do I want to risk damaging it in taking it outside of my home? The answer to that - NO! It's way too valuable to risk damaging or getting stolen on trips. So what to do? You get sometime smaller, lighter, that would be relatively "okay" if I lost it.
Enter the Surface Laptop Go 3, it's nowhere near as expensive as the Laptop Studio, but that also means it is nowhere near the quality. I love the weight, the feel is very nice, has a touch screen, but no pen support (because really, if you can't fold it down to a tablet, then there is no point to using a pen at an awkward angle). The keyboard feels pretty good, but it's not backlit like the Studio, so it's harder to type at night to see keys.
The trackpad placement and size is good, but oddly, not as smooth as the Studio - it's not terrible - it just requires a slightly lighter touch, which is not bad, but noticeable when switching between the two laptops.
With a "budget" PC like this, you're not going to get great internal specs either. Will it handle web browsing, movie watching, working w/Office or CRMs - of course! It's fine for all of that!
Will it handle gaming? Not graphic intense games, I installed Fortnite on it, so I could join in on a game or two while on vacation, but as soon as I started an actual game - it struggled incredibly and was quick to really heat up, regardless of the low video settings I had set. That's a bit of a bummer, I was hoping it would behave at least as good as a Switch (which struggles as well).
And again, with the price comparison, I get it, it's not meant to be as great. It's not going to get you intense gaming, but it is a good lightweight work computer. I will definitely use this for work/casual browsing on trips and leave my Surface Studio safely at home.
Pros:
Not incredibly expensive
Very lightweight
Great battery life (on casual work/browsing)
Touchscreen
Cons:
i5 chip
8GB base RAM
non-backlit keyboard
no gaming
Trackpad requires lighter touch
If this is a secondary machine, this is great. If you want to make this just your work machine, that will also work (unless using apps that require an i7, then this is under powered). If this is going to be your work AND personal (w/gaming) machine - then this is not the PC for you. You'll want something a bit more powerful.

Perfect charging/carrying case
on October 18, 2023
Posted by: MrPHD
I have cases for most of my products, but i tend to not really use them because they somehow feel impractical or I've added something to the device that makes it NOT fit into the case (example: Nintendo Switch Pro controllers won't fit in normal Nintendo Switch cases!).
And like the Nintendo Switch Pro controllers, I added the Elite Strap to my Quest 3, which makes it much bigger - but no worries - it totally fits in this case!
What else fits in the case? Both controllers fit snugly in the case, and there is a little compartment you can lift up to hold your Quest 3 USB-C charging cable AND charging power brick.
Since I charge my Quest 3 each time after use, I found that I can place the Quest 3 in the case, and still attach the USB-C cable so it can charge while it's in the chase! So as to not just sit around collecting dust, or in a location where it might fall down! I just have to lift the case to check when the Quest 3 is fully charged.
I don't entirely understand why there is a lanyard like strap at the top of the case though. I don't think I would feel comfortable hanging my Quest 3 on a hook somewhere - right? I keep the case horizantal and not upright, as if it's on my head. That seems a lot safer, but maybe I'm over protective.I have cases for most of my products, but i tend to not really use them because they somehow feel impractical or I've added something to the device that makes it NOT fit into the case (example: Nintendo Switch Pro controllers won't fit in normal Nintendo Switch cases!).

Play in comfort with this adjustable, ergonomic head strap that fits most head sizes with the quick turn of a dial. This Elite Strap upgrades your fit by taking pressure off your face for increased comfort and weight distribution. The soft and flexible silicone support cradles the back of your head, reducing fatigue. This genuine Meta Quest accessory easily installs on your Meta Quest 3 for a perfect and secure fit every time you play, create, and explore in VR.

Why isn't this stock?
on October 18, 2023
Posted by: MrPHD
I appreciate the videos on how to attach this elite strap, but the top strap doesn't easily thread through it as the video suggests! The trick is to bend the tip of the strap before! Then it will easily bend as you put it through the loop.
The Elite Strap turns the Meta Quest 3 into the PSVR2's very well done comfort strap. The back has a dial for tightening, just like the PSVR2, but unlike the PSVR2, you also need to unwind it to take it off. The PSVR2 will unwind itself as you pull the strap apart. This also means, for friends with bigger heads, you have to unwind to expand it long enough to fit over heads. This should also be more comfortable for users that wear glasses, but since the Quest 3 screens are already clear (as opposed to the PSVR2), I don't even have to wear my +1 glasses.
For how much the Quest 3 is, this should be included, and the stock strap should have never exist. The Elite Strap makes being in the Quest 3 a lot more comfortable for long sessions, especially if you're using it for work like I am!

Surprisingly well done, sound is lacking
on October 18, 2023
Posted by: MrPHD
I tried the mixed reality game, First Encounters, which I found extremely entertaining, allowing me to walk 2 different areas shooting these creatures that were also hiding behind furniture. That was great, more games like this, and I'm all for it - that beats my PSVR2.
However, I didn't get the Quest for gaming (though I will obviously get a couple anyways, but the majority of my VR library exists on the PSVR and PSVR2). I got the Quest 3 for movies and productivity. My 2 favorite things right now Remote Display and Bigscreen Beta, and Peacock VR.
Remote Display allows you to work off your PC/laptop onto a GIANT screen, while still able to see your surroundings. I don't have room for a complete computer workstation setup, so I just work off a laptop, but now I have a large screen which makes looking at excel documents A LOT easier. I don't even have to use the controllers, because I can simply use the hand tracking. Now the hand tracking does have a bit off a downside(at least for me) - since my laptop is in front of me, the system Quest bar is also at the bottom, so depending how I place my laptop, I will sometimes accidentally trigger an app on the bottom, because my hands are at the bottom typing! The solution (for me) is to bring my laptop closer to me, so the system bar is above the keyboard. You also need a well lit room for the hand tracking. Can you watch videos on youtube through a browser? Yup! You sure can! Of course the problem is the sound is going to come from the PC and not the Quest, so you'll need to connect to PC via headset/bluetooth to go immersive. I'm currently writing this review while wearing the Quest 3 on a giant screen, while typing off my laptop. I cannot stress enough how great it is to finally have a giant screen to work off. I use the passthrough when I'm in this, so I can clearly see everything around me, including my own watch/phone. PSVR2 does have a passthrough viewing mode, but unlike the Quest 3, you still can't move freely around because you're wired, and it's hard to read your phone/watch.
Bigscreen Beta, is basically a meeting room/lounge/movie theater where you can rent movies (including 3D movies), and watch along with others. This is what I did with my PSVR, originally - just watch movies / 3D movies (I own a few) in the PSVR. The downside of the PSVR was you're wired to PS4/5 and it drifts after a while, and of course - it's heavy! The PSVR2 fixes that a little as it is not as heavy- but the Quest 3 is the lightest, and most comfortable to use.
The screen inside the Quest 3 appears to be much better than the PSVR2. I had to make a lot of adjustments to the PSVR2 when I first got it, and it still looks a bit blurry, but the Quest 3 immediately showed me very clear non-blurry texts and images.
Finally, Peacock VR, you can watch anything from the Peacock catalog (which I tried to watch Prince Of Darkness), but the sound...the sound is not good, you can hear everything outside (and I have an a/c and air purifier going on). I tried plugging in 2 different wired over the year headsets, but the sound is too low. That's a real problem for me, that means I can't fully enjoy movies unless I make everything quiet in the room - which is not going to happen.
The other big disappointment about this, is that it's from Meta, who even though I opted out of emails, have decided they need to bombard me with emails daily, including one that suggested I buy The Meta Quest 3 512GB. What? What? You know I already own one, that's how you got my info, and now you're telling me I should've bought a better one? STOP SPAMMING ME META!!
Pros:
Lightweight
Mixed Reality looks great
Do not need to use controllers for movies/productivity apps
Feels comfortable (with the elite strap, not the stock) to wear for long periods of time
The visuals inside are very clear to read
Cons:
128GB is not a good size, the base size should be 256GB, and then a 512GB option
The stock strap should've never existed, Elite Strap should be stock
Requires light to use hand gestures, but also so it can see the room your in clearly
Sound is terrible for a noisy environment. I don't know why wired headsets are set so low, that the max is barely audible, which is bad for when you want to fully immerse yourself in a movie
Not enough streaming Apps - we need Max, Showtime, Hoopla, just bring all the apps!!! My entire movie digital library lives in AppleTV!

Cabled Use?

My cabled network has drops on both far ends of the house. Since this has an Ethernet jack, can I connect it to my switch on the opposite side of the house to extend my wireless network's range?
No, this is the opposite of what you are describing. This device provides a wireless network drop for you - from an already existing wifi connection.

What you're looking for is basically another wireless router, not an extender.
