Frustrating
on July 5, 2020
Posted by: MrPHD
from Los Angeles, CA
I recently purchased an ipad and wanted a cover/keyboard. I saw that this has a trackpad and I’m all about trackpads in the PC world already. I’m a fan of Logitech for keyboards/mice / trackpads already, so i assumed their keyboard would also be as excellent as their pc products.
Boy was i wrong, it *mostly* works, but it has quite a few frustrating issues which depending on how patient you are or how you use it, may make it a returnable product.
Everything seemed okay upon first using it, but when trying to type notes, i noticed that the keyboard refused to display 4 characters. Rebooting/plugging unplugging did not fix it. However, it was around the time IOS 13.5.1 came out, so after i updated ipad to 13.5.1, those keys started working again. That worried me - iOS update to get keys working?
I use my ipad often, basically as a replacement to my iPhone, which makes texting and viewing articles much easier with the keyboard and trackpad.
Except there are times when I’ll unlock the ipad and the keyboard doesn’t work - even though it’s lit up - until I physically disconnect it - and reconnect it. Sometimes turning it off and on fixes it, *sometimes* but physically disconnecting always fixes the keys not being visible.
Unfortunately, that is not the only problem - i am also having issues with losing the ability to scroll if i scroll for too long or scroll too fast. The only way to get scrolling back, i have to close the app and open it again. This can be very frustrating when I’m reading an article and have to now scroll with the screen instead of the trackpad - defeating the purpose of the trackpad. When the circular cursor disappears, the keyboard is not far behind to freeze.
i found that keeping the notes app and text app side by side makes it easier to get the keyboard to work. When it doesn’t work in messages - which is often - you can click into notes and back to app in which it’ll work.
As a warning - this is magnetic - so if the keyboard is open and you lift the ipad too quickly - the keyboard will swing and then fall off.
With all that said, when it works - it is great. It is very convenient (for people like me) who can use shortcuts and buttons instead of being strictly touchscreen. I just wish it was stable and i don’t have to restart an app or physically disconnect the keyboard to get it to work. That doesn’t seem to be an issue with Apple branded keyboards.

Warning, not for people with TMJ
on June 10, 2020
Posted by: MrPHD

The Snow product had everything I was interested in - no app needed, all the material provided, powered by phone (w/multiple connectors to work with apple/android).
I used it for three days, I did notice a small improvement, but had to stop.
Why did I have to stop? I have tmj (temporomandibular joint dysfunction). What this means is my jaw hurts more than regular people who do not have it. Even though the SNOW mouth guard isn't particularly large - it IS uncomfortable to keep in mouth for 15-20 minutes (as recommended). I thought I could manage it, but I was wrong.
So if you have tmj, I would NOT recommend this product.

Quick Pics in Under 2 Minutes, Not So Portable
on February 10, 2020
Posted by: MrPHD
from Los Angeles, CA
Was very excited for a portable printer, especially one with a small power bank to operate it. It came with a few sample pictures to use, and a carrying case – and my worst fear of all – a giant HP power brick.
If you have ever purchased an HP computer, particularly monitors, docking stations, or laptops you will be very familiar with the giant power brick.
The year is now 2020, and I know HP has much smaller power (travel) bricks, but it’s almost like they decided to use all the extra power bricks from 2005 to power a little power bank. Why does this bother me so much? The power brick is bigger than the power bank, it won’t fit in the carrying case included in the box. In fact, the only thing that fits in the carrying case in the printer itself – not the power bank or the power brick! Which makes it a kind of a useless case for me, as I would need a bigger case to carry everything else.
Even though the power/cable situation is a bit of a hassle, it is easier to forgive it for what is NOT a hassle – printing pictures quickly. The Sprocket app was incredibly easy and intuitive to use, and I was able to *almost* immediately print out my first picture in just under 2 minutes. *Almost* immediately – the firmware was updated once connected to the sprocket studio (not a big deal, just keep that in mind) and I even spent a minute looking at all the color options on the LED light – that’s right, you can choose your own color – I chose green.
The other important thing to take note, which is also a warning on the device – make sure you have clearance for the printer! The printer passes the picture through the open back, so you will need a few inches of clearance, before it passes it back to the front. In other words, do not put the back of the printer up against a wall.
Another slightly annoying thing about the printer is the perforated lines cut a little too far into the picture, it’s not much, but it’s noticeable when tearing off the edges.
Overall, it’s okay, it prints fast, but the size of the machine, the clearance needed, the giant power brick, the somewhat useless carrying case, makes it not such a great buy.

Let's people with allergies sleep!
on December 18, 2019
Posted by: MrPHD
from Los Angeles, CA
I have allergies all year, as I am allergic to everything, I have a hard time sleeping as I’ll wake up due to allergies and it takes forever to be able to get back to sleep. I don’t particularly like taking pills, as they don’t always seem to work anyways.
I *had* a hard time sleeping. Now that I have the Bissel air220, I have placed it by my bed and let it do its thing and I’ve been sleeping pretty well since. As an added bonus, the low mode in auto mode is very quiet, you can still hear it a little, but the level of sound is closer to that of a white noise machine, which is soothing. The first couple of nights it almost appeared as if the machine was off, but as it turns out - it knows when the room is dark, so it will turn off the indicator lights! Not that the lights were very bright to begin with, but it is nice to know it can detect when the room is dark.
The sensors clearly work as different airflows are detected and the Bissel activates quickly. For instance, I have friend that is a smoker and I force them to smoke outside. Once they come back in, the Bissell detects the smoke, and will kick into high power mode for a little while. Same thing if I bring freshly cooked food closer to it. Guests may think, “is it mad at me because I smell?” Which is an added bonus on teasing guests.
So are there Cons? Well, it is a pretty large device, but it looks visually nice. It almost looks like a giant Bluetooth speaker or a nice portable heater, so it just blends in other home electronics.
I always on while at home, so my electricity bill will be interesting to see next month.
This is definitely a great Christmas gifts for people with allergies, because no one wants to have to take pills to be able to sleep allergy free!

A Polaroid without the worry of Polaroids!
on November 17, 2019
Posted by: MrPHD
from Los Angeles, CA
As soon as I took it out of the box, I was impressed by the design and weight of the lab. I can easily put it in my backpack for transport.
Pressing the power button releases and raises the phone platform which then turns on several lights which include a film counter (represented by dots) and a battery indicator. Also to note - nowhere on the manual or quick start document does it tell you HOW to turn off the Polaroid Lab. I had to google it, which resulted in a recently posted answer on Polaroids website. You have to press on the platform lightly until it goes all the way down. The website says it'll turn itself off after a few minutes, but for me it turns off when the platform is all the way down.
Using the Polaroid app (required for this to work) was pretty simple and interesting. Not only can you print a single picture, but you can also spread a picture with double, Triple, Four, Six, or Nine pieces of film. Each mode has multiple ways to print it out, if you wanted to make one giant picture into x amount of film, you can have it stacked, cascade, side by side or loose / messy format to build one picture. Great way to cover space on a wall with multiple Polaroids forming a large one. Interesting thing to note - you can print an image onto 9 pieces of film, but each pack only contains 8 pieces of film, and multiple boxes of film can get pretty pricey.
Now for the quality. Is it great? No, does it look like a Polaroid? Yes! For sure, each picture I've printed looks as if I had taken it with my on Checkipop (another instant film camera). In other words, it does produce the desired effect I wanted - to look as if I happened to have an instant camera at a moment. Except without having to worry that the shutter was pressed at the exact moment everyone was completely still or it'll come out blurry! Do not expect full vibrant reproductions of your picture on this! It's not meant to be an exact replica, but that doesn't mean they look terrible! They look like great Polaroids!
This is a great product, especially for someone like me who already loves instant film and can now make instant films off my existing library. Remember, it is a picture of a picture, so it won't be perfect, but it will be a perfect Polaroid!

Virus Protection and VPN
on November 11, 2019
Posted by: MrPHD
from Los Angeles, CA
I've been using AVG Free for a while now, and each time I run into a computer (usually a friend's) that has no protection (besides Windows Defender) I suggest it gets installed and let them decided if they want to upgrade it or not. Getting the AVG Ultimate worked out well for me as I got to install it on 5 different devices. My Iphone 6s (VPN), my windows 10 machine, my Samsung galaxy tablet, my pinball machine that runs off Windows 7, and the last license on a PC I got for my father.
VPN - One of the main reasons I wanted AVG ultimate was to install the VPN on everything. I had just recently used NordVPN and it did NOT work out well. However, AVG VPN worked as easily as any VPN software should. I was also able to verify my IP in different countries after connecting/turning it on.
Going through the AVG tune-up made me realize how all the things I've been doing individually and manually can be automated by a program, which saves a lot of time so i appreciate that - especially a visual Scandisk, as your standard scan looks like gibberish to your average consumer.
Also included, the AVG Secure Browser, which is basically a locked down version of Google Chrome. I immediately made this the default browser on my father's pc.
Cons: VPN app (Iphone) doesn't seem to be consistent, though i wonder if that's my old iPhone 6s, for the most part the VPN is working and verifiable, I just haven't figured out when it decides to turn itself off (but also after being idle for a couple of hours).
One thing I found very annoying was after I would put in the device code, it would want to go through all the extra features (tune up/vpn), which you are licensed for, but won't let you use it as it tries to bill you for it first, which can be confusing. So as a hint: don't let it auto run any of the extra stuff. Stop it and click on "My AVG" and there you will see the installations for those extra features.
Using the default options for putting things to sleep became problematic on my windows 7 gaming machine, and there wasn't a good way to get it working again until I uninstalled it. I will eventually reinstall it, but it greatly slowed down Steam. However, since the machine is Windows 7, I'm not too concerned about troubleshooting as I'll eventually stop using Windows 7 on it.
Ultimately, this is definitely something to recommend to everyone.

Tasty Snacks!
on October 27, 2019
Posted by: MrPHD
from Los Angeles, CA
The first thing I started cooking as soon as I got my AirFryer- apple crisp chips. It's an easy setup, but the unfortunate thing about it - it takes about 90 minutes. However, after coming home from work, 90 mins is about the appropriate time in which I am ready for a snack - so starting it when I walk in the door is perfect timing.
Faster snacks? Plantain chips and mushrooms are ready to eat in less than 30 minutes.
The fryer itself isn't what I consider "large," but my friends with their own fryers say it is large. It's about as tall as my microwave, and fits nicely between it and my stove top. It is a good idea to leave it near the kitchen air vent as it will naturally fill the room with scent of whatever you are cooking. It's very easy to detach parts and clean.
It also comes with a handy recipe sample booklet, as well as the ability to download the AirFryer app which gives you plenty of searchable recipes specifically for the AirFryer. The one minor issue with using the app was that the Air Fryer box doesn't specifically mention the model number. It just says "Premium." However, on the bottom of the Airfryer it shows model of HD9721 - this is a bit important as the app changes the settings/times based on your model of Airfryer.
I will eventually go onto cooking actual meals, but I always had this in mind for quick daily snacks, and it is excellent at it.

Works as advertised - if you keep it up!
on October 27, 2019
Posted by: MrPHD
from Los Angeles, CA
I had used my Upright for a week as soon as I got it, as i was anxious and have always been a sloucher. For that week, as I got into work, i put it on when it reminded me around 10AM, and kept it on for a few hours. After taking it off, I noticed myself naturally standing up straighter - meaning it was working! You also get emails congratulating you on your completion of trainings, which include discounts for replacement sticky pads.
Then the problem - I got sick, I wasn't going to work, and I didn't have my upright go on me (as I left it at work). Then the daily reminders and emails about using it - got to be a bit annoying. Upon returning to work, my battery had died, and although it comes with everything you need in the little carrying case (device and extra pads) - the charge cable doesn't fit in it the case, and I don't have many USB C cables, so then it went a couple of more days before getting to recharge it again. Now being back on, it now feels weird to keep using it - as in it feels more like a chore than it did when I first started. In other words, if you start it, don't stop! Make sure you have the cable handy wherever it is you keep your device!
I will still continue to use it, and I'm sure after a few days I'll get back to naturally standing up straight, which is exactly what I want and need.

When you *only* want to hear music!
on August 14, 2019
Posted by: MrPHD
from Los Angeles, CA
The Master & Dynamic headsets are absolutely gorgeous looking wireless headsets and extremely comfortable to wear. I have been specifically using them to take naps to nod off to soothing music, in addition to my normal music listening while playing games/doing chores.
The noise cancellation on this is also excellent. I had previously used the Bose QuietComfort series and they did not feel or work as well as the M&D. Would I wear these outside? No, because it does such a good job (and look amazing) that I would not want to put myself into a situation in which I wouldn't be able to hear anything around me, making me an easy target for a mugging. I could turn off the N/C function, but then it defeats the purpose of enjoying music only. So for me personally, these are indoor headsets. The noise cancellation works so well, one day I came home, put them on, washed some dishes, and went off to play a game while listening to music. When a friend arrived shortly after, they asked me to take off the headsets - which I could then hear that I had my very loud air-conditioner on at full blast, and never turned off the sink. That's how good they are, could not hear anything beyond my music!
Pairing to phone is pretty simple, and it comes with all you need to plug into any device. What to plug into an old phone that doesn't have Bluetooth? There's a 3.5mm cable for that. In flight adapter? Also included. Want to charge it but do not have a USB-C charge brick? A USB-C to standard USB adapter included.
Making and receiving calls on cell phone? Not an issue, I can hear people clearly, and they can also hear me clearly while walking all over my home with my phone far away.
I also like to use the headsets to plug into my Playstation PSVR for gaming chats, though I believe when I plug in the cable, it somehow disables the built in mics. Not that big of a deal for me, but would've been nice to plug this into a controller and use the mics on the headsets (vs using the PSVR mics).
Again, the noise cancellation is so good, that if you wanted to just kind of isolate yourself to music/podcasts/games, these are definitely the headsets to do that with. Battery life is also great, as it took at least 3 weeks before I finally had to charge it again (after an initial full charge when I opened it).
I will admit that they are not cheap and you can tell by the quality and usefulness of the headsets, but if you're someone like me who almost needs to only hear music, I would not choose another. Totally worth it.

The Discreet "I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" earbuds
on August 5, 2019
Posted by: MrPHD
from Los Angeles, CA
Always been on the look out for wireless earbuds, mainly because I like to listen to music while I ride my motorcycle, so bulky/fancy headsets aren't an option. I had wired Apple earbuds I got with my old phone, but a new iphone won't come with it and I'm tired of having to place phone nearby, but I also don't want to spend $200 on AirPods.
Enter the SkullCandy Indy!
For a fraction of the price, these little guys came with a nice black portable charging case with indicators in the front, to let you know if your case needs to be plugged in.
I've been using the headphones on a daily basis - driving to and from work, walking breaks during lunch, and/or on the weekends walking to the grocery store. It's been about 3 weeks, and I barely finally charged my case this weekend - not having done so since I took it out of the box.
Pros:
Can fit in full face motorcycle helmets
Comfortably fits in ear (3 included sizes, I switched to the smaller one)
Call quality is pretty good, everyone can hear me clearly and I can hear them back
Touch Controls to raise/lower volume and to skip/repeat tracks
Discreet (so people won't target you for theft if you are noticeably not paying attention to your surroundings)
Excellent noise cancellation - I walked by 2 people having a normal conversation and could not hear anything!
Earbuds automatically charge as soon as you put them in the case
Cons:
Potentially too good at noise cancellation! It's very easy to raise the volume, especially if you're adjusting them into your ear. I did not realize how loud my music was until I walked by people and could not hear them.
Also listed as a pro, but potential con - I'm worried about my short uses and auto-charges. I almost would not mind having an option to turn them off without putting them back in the case, to let the battery drain completely vs having them fully charged quickly so many times because of short uses of them.
They can sometimes fall off, even with the appropriate earbud size, So depending on how far my walk is, I will readjust them when I feel them getting a little loose.
Not ideal for running, but that might be unique to the size of my own ears.
Finally: they also fit inside of over the ear headsets. Why would you want to do that? Well, for me, I like to listen to my music with the Indy, while I have another over the ear headset for gaming purposes, and the person on the other end doesn't hear my music, as it's in my ear and not being picked up by the outer headset's mic.

So I am in need of a gps tracker for my husband who has dementia. I want something user friendly for the technically challenged. Something I can put on his key chain that would notify me if he leaves the home,

This should work for you, the initial "setup" is the most difficult in which you have to setup the "Home" zone, and it will alert you (via the app) that the device has left the zone. You will want to charge the device every few days.

Two quick questions. Is the lanyard long enough to fit around a man's neck? He won't remember to put it on but if I could put it around his neck he won't leave without it. Is it water proof. Can he shower in it?

The included lanyard is NOT long enough to fit around a neck of any size person or animal. You would want to just buy a separate lanyard that would be big enough.
The device is listed with an IP68 rating, and this is what that means according to Samsung: "Devices backed by an international standard rating of IP68 are deemed fit enough to withstand dust, dirt and sand, and are resistant to submersion up to a maximum depth of 1.5m underwater for up to thirty minutes."

That tells me it should be okay to use it in the shower.

An integrated headphone jack lets you enjoy stereo sound without disturbing others, and the universal design works with desktops and laptops. With simple power and volume controls, these Insignia computer speakers offer effortless operation.

Can you connect this to your PS4 or a monitor

No on the PS4, as it requires a stereo output to connect to, which the PS4 does not have.

You can connect to a monitor, only if the monitor has the capability to play sound through (headset jack).

Will this device pair well with the vizio m50-e1? Not sure if my tv has the necessary ports for this device.

Yes, that particular TV has an HDMI ARC point - use that.

I have the Samsung ONE CONNECT box. Optical to electrical converter per say. What port of the SAMSUNG ONE Connect do i hook up to the Sonos Beam? What are the available ports of the Sonos Beam?

You can only connect to the beam with an HDMI cable. It does come with an optical to HDMI converter for older TV's/receivers.

I have a 2008 Samsung without a Arc hdmi. What is the best way to use the beam for both streaming amazon music and tv audio without any receiver/amp.

The Sonos Beam comes with an optical to HDMI converter. Assuming your TV does have optical, you can simply use that. Music streaming you connect via your phone (Android/Iphone) using the amp, and it sounds great.
