Another Jean-Claude Van Damme masterpiece hits the DVD shelves in a big, outrageous special edition of Universal Soldier from the fine folks at Lions Gate Home Entertainment. Newly remastered with both an anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen picture and 5.1 Dolby Digital sound, this disc brings this sci-fi brawl into the digital age the right way. Extras on the disc include an alternate "touching" ending, along with the newly created 19-minute featurette "Guns, Genes and Fighting Machines -- The Making of Universal Soldier." Featuring interviews with Van Damme and co-headliner Dolph Lundgren, along with writer/producer Dean Devlin and director Roland Emmerich, the featurette is a good look at the production from the eyes of two young action stars and a pre-Independence Day production team just on the cusp of box-office success. Those four also star on the audio commentary, a spliced together affair of competing accents that was taken from three separately recorded tracks that weigh heavily in the Devlin/Emmerich corner rather than the goofy ramblings of the one from the "Muscles From Brussels" or the fun insight from Lundgren. Also on the DVD is another featurette, "Tale of Two Titans," a look back at the early days of the two stars that features classic old photographs and stories of each one's break into show business from the actors themselves. A definite improvement over the film's previous DVD releases, this release is sure to bring new love to the film and its ridiculous action stars.

truly a great gem. Other than buffy the vampire slayer this is one of my personal favorite shows Eliza has been a part of. A remarkable show that deserved more than two seasons.
This release collects all episodes plus a full-length movie from the HBO show Looking, a dramedy following the personal and professional lives of a trio of gay men in San Francisco.

One of the best movies of the 1950s, Alexander Mackendrick's Sweet Smell of Success has gotten to DVD a lot faster than it got to laserdisc, as part of MGM's Vintage Classics series. That means a low list price but not much in the way of packaging -- artwork, a synopsis, a box, and that's it -- not even an insert listing the chapters. The film-to-video transfer is as crisp as the movie itself is piercing and disquieting in its action and its depiction of the vicious, petty underside of American popular culture of the 1950s. Every shot looks as sharp as a fine black-and-white still, and considering that the movie was shot on location in New York City, that makes this DVD almost as valuable as a travelogue of the city as it is as a drama. And the score, a mix of Elmer Bernstein jazz-based background music and material by the Chico Hamilton Quintet, fairly leaps out of the speakers on this digital remastering, which adds immeasurably to the experience; this was a deliberately aggressive score by Bernstein and company, and was meant to be perceived by the viewer. The chapter breakdown is adequate, and the menu is easy to maneuver around -- the only extra material included is the original trailer.

Truly one of the greats. It's sad movies like this aren't made anymore. Outstanding movie and performances. I'm not typically a black and white movie fan but the story does it and makes it worth it.

I truly don't understand the hate that this movie gets. Its good in its own way. I'm not the biggest fan of war or soldier films but this one was truly a good one and worth the view.
