Studio Ghibli Never Lets You Down
on May 23, 2012

This is one of my personal favorites in the Studio Ghibli catalog. If you are looking for a deeply moving, family oriented film, this is the one. From the music to the story to the detailed colors and background objects in the animation, Whisper of the Heart is sure to please anime and non-anime fans alike.
I have not watched the blu-ray copy yet, but Disney never fails to deliver fantastic transfers. If it's anything like the transfer for Nausicaa or Castle in the Sky, it's sure to be vivid, detailed, free of noise reduction and "waxy" smoothing, and a true representation of the artists' intention.
What's great about it: A deep, emotional story with well fleshed out characters

Perfect for Capturing VHS Tapes to a Mac
on January 17, 2012

I own an older iMac (2008) with an Intel Duo Core 2.66ghz processor and 4 gigs of RAM, and I can easliy transfer any VHS videos to my computer without any issues. The quality is decent, not really high quality, but the source material is a VHS, so what can you expect? I have recorded VHS tapes from 30 mins to 4 hours, and never had a glitch or any problems transferring my computer. I have final cut studio on my computer so it's easy to edit and export DVDs.
My suggestion for this product would be to make sure you have a really good VCR or other source for playing back your videos. The El Gato and any mid-range computer will work great together, but for the highest quality videos, make sure your source is playing on high quality player.
* Also, some people complain about the videos only coming in as MPEG4's, but if you are even slightly tech saavy, you can easily figure out how import your videos as H.264 files.
What's great about it: Easliy transfers VHS to decent quality digital video files
What's not so great: You need a good VCR or source player

Great Rumble, Mediocre Undercard
on September 17, 2011

The undercard for this Rumble is pretty bland. Orton vs. Sheamus is especially slow and boring. Undertaker vs. Mysterio has a great opening and a decent finish, but not much in the middle. The Rumble itself is fantastic. One of the best I've seen in years. I always recommend a blu-ray release over a DVD when it comes to WWE PPV's because their DVD's are so compressed it's like watching a youtube video. WWE's blu-rays on the other hand look amazing and bring you into the action.
What's great about it: Fantastic Rumble
What's not so great: Bland Undercard

A realistic creature feature
on September 17, 2011

This is a great film for creature feature fans. A realistic plot with professional actors and excellent special effects. If you like creature horror flicks, you're sure to enjoy this one. I would recommend the DVD over the blu-ray, which is something I have never done before. The reason being that the DVD has special features while the blu-ray has none. Also, the blu-ray displays in an integrated format (1080i) rather than progressive (1080p) so the blu-ray is hardly a step up from the DVD. This is a Canadian release, but I highly doubt there will ever be a US release with special features and a progressive format, so I recommend this film on DVD.
What's great about it: Realistic plot and special effects. Great creature horror flick.
What's not so great: No special features, subtitles, and it displays in 1080i format

The Wrestlemania We Needed
on May 27, 2010
Posted by: Polka4life
from Durango, CO
In my opinion, this was the Wrestlemania we needed. It was the debut for a number of younger wrestlers, and the farewell for two icons in the business. It was a great transitional Wrestlemania.
It also hits where it really counts - the main events. Don't expect anything great from Bret Hart vs. McMahon or the women's tag match, but all the other matches are highly entertaining, and the two heavyweight title matches and HBK vs. Undertaker all tell great stories. I believe this has to be in the top 10 of all Wrestlemanias.
As for the video and audio quality of the transfer, I would give both a 4 out of 5 stars. The Blu Ray looks excellent and can be compared to WM 24 and 25. I only give the extras a 3 because they included both of the go home shows for Raw and Smackdown, but did not include the Raw after Wrestlemania including HBK's farewell speech.
What's great about it: It's an entertaining four hours of wrestling!
What's not so great: Two bad matches

Good, but not great.

I'm a huge ninja turtles fan, but I'm also a video connoisseur. One thing I will point out before the review is that the first 3 films only carry their trailers as bonus features. There was a documentary created in 1992 entitled "Behind the Shells", but for some reason it was not included with these films. The 4th movie has all the extras from the original blu-ray release. So if you're a fan of special features, you will be let down. That said, I'll break down each film by quality of the film itself, as well as the quality of the blu-ray transfers.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles -
Film - 9 / 10. The best one of the series. Story follows the turtles origins closely, acting is genuine, and there's an equal balance of violence and humor, what every turtle fan wants.
Blu-ray Transfer - 3/10. It's not much of a step up from the dvd. The opening shot of the film is dull and grainy, just as you'd remember it from the VHS. All of the scenes in the sewers and the night shots are grainy and dark. The only shots you will really notice that look truly "blu-ray worthy" are the scenes outdoors at April's farm as they are very crisp and bright. The audio has little improvement, but it is clearer than the dvd.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze
Film: 7/10. This film is not nearly as emotionally deep or involved as the first film, but still very entertaining. The humor remains intact, but the action has been purposefully toned down as parents of children complained that the first film was too violent. The director even admitted in the "Behind the shells" feature that they purposefully made the violence look more choreographed and fake to not offend parents. Tokka and Rahzar quickly became fan favorites, although if anyone was like me, they were disappointed the mutants weren't Bebop and Rocksteady.
Blu-ray Transfer: 3/10. This transfer isn't any better than the first film. Grainy with film noise and scratches. It was not cleaned up at all and looks like the dvd version. The audio is just a slight step up from the dvd.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Turtles in Time
Film: 3.5/10. A clunky script with a silly storyline. The turtle costumes also have been changed and their animatronic mouths are way out of sync for most scenes. It still has some fun action and spots of humor in it, but, as every turtle fan knows, this was the downfall of the trilogy and probably the reason the turtles disappeared from the big screen for over 13 years.
Blu-ray Transfer: 9/10. Unfortunately, the worst film out of all the live action films has the best transfer. Bright colors, crisp edges, clean audio, little to no video noise. This is what you expect a blu-ray to look like. An excellent transfer.
TMNT
Film: 6.5/10. This film has helped to reignite the franchise in modern times. The story isn't fantastic, but the action is great, and the interaction between the brothers is more genuine, like the first film. Everyone was disappointed it was not a live action for the nestalgia effect, but we have the 2011 film to look forward to. The resolution of this film came too quick, but otherwise it was a nice way to bring the turtles back to the silver screen.
Blu-ray Transfer: 10/10. The animation is bright, colorful, detailed, etc, etc. like any animated film. It's one of those films that will really show off your blu-ray player, television, and surround sound. Amazing.
Extras included in the box: 5/10. I don't think the extras are anything special, but they had to spice up the 25th anniversary somehow. You get a ninja turtles beanie (pretty small, but cool), a reprinted sketch signed by Peter Laird one of the original ninja turtles creators, character cards with photos primarily from the third film, an advertisement for the upcoming TMNT fighter videogame, and a reprint of the original TMNT comic book in black and white. It all comes in a replica of a small cardboard pizza box which is cool packaging, but a pain anytime you want to get the films on the bottom of the box (if you leave the extras in the box).
The only people I recommend this set to is my fellow, die-hard ninja turtle fans. Anyone else will find this to be a waste of money.
What's great about it: All 4 ninja turtles films on blu ray
What's not so great: First 2 movie transfers not great, no good extras on the discs
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
