One of the better 3-man Floyd CDs

Up until this year, this was the final Pink Floyd album, and it was the last one completed during Richard's life. It is the best of the 3-man Floyd albums. Unlike a couple of the others, the three were all actively involved in the album. Although all of the Floyd albums under David's leadership were dominated by him, Richard co-wrote almost half the songs (his first writing since Shine On#, and even sings lead on one song #for the first time since Dark Side#. He and Nick are also fully on board the performing. The album has nine songs plus two instrumentals. Some of the songs deal with estrangement from friends. Although they were sung by and probably written for David, the estrangement from Roger applied to all 3 of them. I very much related to one of those songs, "Lost for Words", which deals with the futility of trying to reach out to an enemy. The musical style of the album is lite rock. It does not have the musical diversity of other albums, but the music is all good. The lyrics are all good, albeit not up to the standards of Syd and Roger. Physicist Stephen Hawking narrates one of the songs. On the whole it really is a good album. It's only when compared to 4-man Pink Floyd albums that it pales. #There is a special edition with the music on Blu-Ray or DVD, some videos and some trinkets, but no new music.#

A decent final album

THE ENDLESS RIVER. This is and will be the final Pink Floyd album. It is based on music recorded by Richard while they were making Division Bell. David and Nick added much material to it, thus turning it into a real group project. (Nick gets his first writing credit since Dark Side.) Out of the 18 songs (21 on the expanded version), there is only one that is not an instrumental. (Two if you count Stephen Hawking's narration on one instrumental.# Louder Than Words was written by David's wife, and is sung by him. The song deals with the alienation among friends. It is a good song. The music can't be described as rock music. It is astral, new age music. #My wife, who is not a Pink Floyd fan, described this as planetarium music.) I generally prefer songs over instrumentals; so initially I liked only Louder Than Words and the last song on the extended version, Nervana. However, on further listening the album has grown on me. It is somewhat dominated by Richard. This album is driven by Richard as it was based on his recordings, mostly from 1994 but some dating back to the 1960s. The instrumentals are at least good, with some of the better ones harking back to Echoes and Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Many of the songs have small cues to previous albums, which is appropriate for the final album. Between the album being almost entirely instrumentals and the good lyrics on the one song, Roger is not missed. It's a very pleasant sounding album, but it's not that memorable. The only great song is Nervana. Nervana is the only rock oriented instrumental, harkening back to Interstellar Overdrive from the very first Pink Floyd album. Unfortunately Nervana is only available on the extended version, which comes with a DVD or Blu-Ray and costs almost twice as much. The other two songs on the extended version are completely forgettable, which makes the one great song very expensive. On the whole Pink Floyd are going out neither on a high note nor a low note.

Phenomenal story; lousy extras

Russell T. Davies is an amazing writer!!! My wife, whose favorite TV series of all time used to be classic Doctor Who, never though the Doctor could be brought back. Now I think she says that no one but Russell T. Davies could have brought back Doctor Who, and then surpass it with his original series Torchwood.
Torchwood: Children of Earth has to be one of the best science fiction serials ever. Russell T. Davies did not focus at all on preserving every thing for future seasons, but instead went all out with an amazing and thought provoking serial, in which in the end everything came together. The fact that the story has provoked so much debate is just one more sign of its greatness. My wife and I spent hours discussing it after the final part aired. (In fact I left work early that day so that I could be home in time to catch it when it first started, rather than watch it later.) I am sorry that I am limited to giving the story only 5 stars.
When we watched Torchwood: Children of Earth on BBC America, we were very pleased that BBC America aired a 1 hour special before the 1st episode, in which they went over the history and writing of Torchwood up through the end of the previous season finale. Then after each of the 5 episodes of Torchwood: Children of Earth, BBC America aired a 15 minute special, in which the writers and actors discussed that evening's episode that had just aired. Fantastic stuff. Unfortunately, NONE OF THIS made it to the Blu Ray set.
One of the reasons we invested in Blu Ray was not just for the better picture and sound, but because Blu Ray sets tend to have even more extras than DVDs. We are very disappointed that this set has but a single 1/2 special. At a minimum we expected the trailers and all 6 specials. Now we have to transfer them onto a disc from our DVR. If we have to do that anyway, I almost feel like what was the point of buying the set on disc at all.
However, my wife points out that it should be bought because despite the lack of extras, it's not only still Torchwood but it's Torchwood: Children of Earth- one of the greatest sci-fi serials ever. In fact, forget limiting it to sci-fi, Torchwood: Children of Earth is one of the greatest stories and serials ever!!!
What's great about it: One of the best science-fiction serials extra
What's not so great: Dearth of extras
