Terrific movie & great 4k transfer

This movie was a pleasant surprise... Kate Winslet & Idris Elba end up stranded on a snowy mountain in the middle of nowhere after a plane crash & have to help each other survive the icy conditions ... Of course there's alot more to it, but I'll say if you like movies like The Shallows or Castaway, you'll enjoy this one (in this case the bitter cold & mountains are the challenge versus sharks or a dessert island).
The 4k transfer is rather breathtaking, with excellent detail throughout making for some pretty spectacular wintery scenes (great cinematography!). The 7.1 DTS HDMA sound is also excellent, with lots of realistic blustery wind effects pouring rain out of the rear speakers... All in all a pleasant way to spend a wintery night...

It didn't exactly receive the greatest reviews, but I enjoyed this 'final' installment (how many times have we heard that one with movie franchises!?). If you're a fan of Jovovich and this series, there's certainly much to like. The plot has some interesting aspects regarding a serum that can supposedly save the world and there's plenty of action. It's not the most colorful or super-sharpest film, but having a native 4k digital intermediate definitely helps this film look pretty excellent overall on 4k UHD. The sound is top-notch and very immersive. Get it if you're a fan of these films...

Beautiful, faithful 4k transfer of modern classic

Watching this movie for the first time in years, I forgot what a great western this really is. Eastwood, Hackman, Freeman and reallt all of the supporting cast are at the top of their acting game. As for the 4k transfer, this film was restored from the original negative and rescanned at full 4k resolution. Some of shots indoors are a tad soft, but that's the source material. But once things move outdoors the image is rich and resplendently detailed, especially the shots of the outdoor scenery and vistas. The color palette pushes the appropriately warm and sunbaked look fitting of a western like this. Close-up shots of faces reveal copious amounts of wrinkles and facial detail that are surely not as apparent on the standard bluray as great as 1080p still can be. As for the audio, the lossless hdma 5.1 track is a great upgrade over the less potent Dolby Digital lossy track on the standard bluray. Rain, thunder and gunshots have a noticible heft and presence in the surround channels. Overall, this 4k disc is now the best way ever to experience this great film. Get it!

A timeless classic with a stunning transfer!

If you haven't seen this Disney classic, you're probably living under a rock. It's essentially a tale about growing up and perseverance in the face of adversity told through the lens of a young buck named Bambi. In terms of the transfer, this blu-ray disc is actually the same transfer as the Diamond Edition from a few years back. Short of any possible future 4k UHD release, this is still the best this movie could ever look on home video. This 1080p disc extracts every last nuance of hand-brushed detail that the 1080p blu-ray format can muster. The colors are vibrant, yet natural. Detail is pristine and is only limited by the sometimes intentionally soft look of certain scenes. If you have a 4k TV, the upscaled image is a real treat. The available Disneyview panels that fill the ugly 4:3 ratio vertical black bars are super-tasteful and are perfectly matched to their respective scenes. As for the sound, the 7.1 DTS-HDMA is surprisingly full and engaging, especially considering its age. Bass is quite solid and the rear channels are quite active, with considerably more left/right and rear channel activity than Pinocchio or Snow White which are much more center-channel-heavy tracks (understandable considering they were from 1937 and 1939, respectively. Fantasia - also from '39 - of course had it's very own special 'surround sound' process). If you didn't pick this up when it was first released on blu-ray a few years back, you owe it to yourself to do so right now!

Cheesy but fun old dinosaur flick

If you can appreciate the days of cheesy stop-motion animation from decades before the dawn of Jurassic Park then you'll get a kick out of this piece of nostalgia. The campy acting and the cave-man dialog are of course laughable as are the comically-fake looking dinosaurs. But the point is, if you're a fan of the old Godzilla films, you don't watch this expecting technical perfection, you watch it for the nastalgia of stop motion and to get a laugh or two. One thing that is surprisingly excellent is the video quality of this bluray disc. The colors are quite vivid and the image is appreciably clear, save for a few scenes where optical effects inherently softened the source material. The audio is decidedly lo-fi mono and sounds a bit better if you enable the 'mono-movie' setting on your receiver that at least spreads it across the 3 front speakers in a 7.1 setup like mine. If you like films of this type (like One Million Years BC from '66) you'll enjoy this one, especially considering the very reasonable price.

This CD represents a nice bridge between their 'tougher' sound courtesy of Jay Joyce and their more country-sounding older efforts. Every song is worthy of a listen and some like 'Night on Our Side' and 'Rollin' will have you hitting repeat, while the ballads are warm and burrow into your brain with repeat lisntening. Great return to form after the past 2 records that while still very good were a bit too aggressive and not them at their harmonizing best.

Excellent HD transfer of modern 'classic'

The film itself is about a hitman named Leon who both teams up with and tries to protect Matilda, played by a young Natalie Portman (12!) in her film debut. Great action as well as some tenderness as the 2 leads develop a strong bond. Also the ever-reliable Gary Oldman plays one of his best maniacs as the music loving loving villain who shoots people to the beat of whatever's in his head. The image quality is very crisp, a tad bright in the whites, but very good blacks. The Dolby Atmos/TRUE HD 7.1 track is very clear and plenty of punch and directionality. Highly recommended disc!

Great movie & a stunning early 4k disc

This is not your typical mindless superhero flick. It certainly has plenty of great web-slinging action and some cool villains in Electro and the Green Goblin. But it has a heart as well, with the tension between Peter Parker/Spidey (very humorously played by Andrew Garfield) & his love Gwen (played again by the endearing Emma Stone) giving the film emotional weight. I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but the fights are awesome and the ending is surprising. Andrew Garfield brings a very human quality to the role, being very serious about his relationship with Gwen and loved ones, yet also delivering a good number of humorous lines. Really well done overall with great effects, surprisingly strong acting & a story filled with unexpected emotional weight for a film of this genre. As for the 4k disc, this is simply a must-own early 4k release, not just for the high quality of the film. A.S. 2 was shot on regular film versus digitally, and this resulting 4k Ultra HD disc with HDR from Sony (long regarded by many video experts as the studio that produces the highest-quality dvd and blu-ray disc transfers available, & I would tend to agree) is visually stunning beyond words. Skin and clothing textures are rendered with unbelievably sharp detail. Flesh tones are true-to-life and the colors (notably the reds and blues in Spidey's suit) are extraordinary vibrant. The HDR encoding (short for High Dynamic Range, meant for super/enhanced UHD or OLED 4k tvs with HDR capability) yields virtually limitless contrast, with super-bright whites and the deepest blacks a television could hope to produce. (So bright you may actually want to lower the backlighting and slightly reduce the contrast just a bit if you watch this in a darkened room). Simply put, this is definite demo-worthy 4k video. As for the sound, If you have an advanced audio system, prepare to be wowed! The 7.1/ Dolby Atmos enabled soundtrack is equally impressive, with room rattling bass and super-immersive use of the surround speakers. TV speakers and even the best sound bar available will not even begin to do this soundtrack justice. (By the way, the only way to get REAL, true surround sound is by not cutting corners and doing it the right way with at least a halfway decent multichannel amp and 5.1 speakers.) All told, both for the stellar content and the flawless video/audio presentation, this disc really delivers the 4k home theater goods.

Impressive dynamic range & very clear vocals

I decided to upgrade to this seriously great-sounding Center channel from the already-potent proCenter 600 (which I acquired via purchasing the Procinema 600 system at Best Buy in a great package deal along with the equally impressive Denon AVR-X1200 7.1 receiver with Dolby Atmos & DTS-X).
As it is, the Procinema 600 is a very impressive system, with far bigger sound than its diminutive size. But, seeing how I was pushing them to just about their limit, I decided to do the right thing and upgrade the 3 front channels to '1000-status' and relegate the 600s to the side and back surround duties.... It is simply the best audio decision I have ever made!
The ProCenter 1000 was actually the last missing piece... The first order of business was to upgrade the 2 main front left/rights as the 600s were quite excellent for movies but a little strained playing music at higher volume levels. Adding the Promonitor 1000s was the first giant leap...what beautifully detailed and punchy sound...They can handle anything you throw at them! So, for a month or so, the lineup was the Promonitor 1000s as the main left-rights, the 600 sats for side/back surrounds, pro-sub 600 subwoofer for LFE and the ProCenter 600 continuing in its center-role. I was quite thrilled with this configuration at first, but then I noticed that the 600 Center (which still performs amazingly well) would sometimes get a bit lost in louder sequences and I didn't want to stress it out, so I 'bit the bullet' and decided the best answer was to.spring for this, the substantially larger and beefier ProCenter 1000... Hello home theater bliss!
To be clear, the 600 is a superb system, but if you like to really push the volume, then the 1000s are the way to go. The 1000s - including the ProCenter 1000 - deliver incredibly robust midrange, clean highs and respectable mid-bass. Whereas the the 600 sometimes required increasing the volume to cut through the louder 1000 monitors during loud sequences, the ProCenter 1000 effortlessly delivers dynamic, punchy effects and clean, distortion-free dialog while seamlessly blending with the tonally-matched Promonitor left/rights. It's worth every penny of its very-reasonable $220 price tag. In fact, it sounds about twice as expensive as it is. Definitive Technologies is the real deal if you want a top-shelf home theater experience on a modest budget. Highly recommended!

Awesome 3D Epic Period Piece

If you like epic medieval pieces with lots of swords and a cast of thousands like Gladiator or LOTR with some biblical folklore about Moses and his followers journey thrown in, you will likely enjoy this thoroughly engrossing step back in time circa 1300 BC. Several great sword action and natural disaster sequences combined with very good acting from the always excellent Christian Bale and all the main cast members, plus an interesting take on the legend of Moses and his followers' journey across the Red Sea. The 1080problem 3D image is jaw-droppingly sharp and detailed with an appropriately goldfish color pallette. Amazing sets/costumes as well. The 3D effect is not gimmicky and strikingly realistic with the cinematography seeming to go on forever into the screen, making the already epic sprawling backdrops all the more beautiful to look at. The 7.1 lossless DTS HD Master Audio is ear candy that will rattle your living room. Highly recommend if you like this genre!
