I'm not going to lie, I wasn't sure what to expect going into Doyle's solo effort.
Let me preface by saying that I'm a huge fan of The Misfits (with respect to both Danzig and '95-era) and have always felt that Doyle's guitar playing was often overlooked and underrated. The monster man definitely shined in both incarnations of The Fits and his old band, Gorgeous Frankenstein, but there was something missing in the latter - there was simply no driving force behind the lyrics and vocals. That's where Abominator changes everything.
Abominator reunites the powerful, pounding and blood-pumping riffs of Doyle combined once again with melodic, dark and inspired lyrics - this time, from a new face to some. Alex Story (of Cancerslug) has been a horror fan favorite for over a decade and meshes with Doyle's brutal axe-playing phenomenally - this album was truly a match made in hell and a blessing for fans of The Misfits, Cancerslug, thrash and punk alike.
I had to order this on BestBuy.com, but it shipped fine. The album includes an additional track that was unavailable on pre-release copies.
Do not pass this album up - if you listen to one album this year, make it this. Very excited to hear Doyle and Alex pair up again in the future, this is an awesome departure from The Misfits for Doyle and gives him great room to flex his guitar playing with an awesome singer and one of the most real and fierce songwriters of today. Can't wait for these guys to tour!
What's great about it: Killer riffs, killer vocals.
What's not so great: BestBuy didn't carry this in-store at my location - for shame.
