This series makes colonizing Mars seem almost impossible ... ALMOST. In the end, we're convinced it won't be easy ... But it's POSSIBLE. There's a dash of soap opera, and (unfortunately) you have to watch the "extras" to understand HOW they make air and water. But this is a fresh approach to an old theme, and well worth a watch!

Back when women in business was still a "novel" idea, this movie had a (minor) point. But it's now an antique. Here we have the story of a secretary who wants to be a "player", and pretends to be the boss when her own boss is out with a broken leg. She proves she has the "stuff" alright, but to make that happen the producers have to FILL the room with men who don't see the potential of women, and give her a friend (Joan Cusack) who is an absolute bimbo (to make her look smart by comparison), and give her (a mistake) a female boss who has clawed her own way to the top, and yet HATES another woman succeding on HER turf. NOT very convincing by today's standards.

A Howard Hawks classic, with John Wayne in top form as a world weary lawman trying to help his (drunk) friend Dean Martin defend a town. Hawks later remade this filn as "El Dorado" (which I personally prefer because it's more fun to watch), but this is still classic western cinema. WELL worth a look.

This ISN'T the Flash Gordon of the old Buster Crabbe Serials, but rather a product of it's time (1980 - think TV's "Buck Rogers" and the original "battlestar Gallactica"). Director Dino De Laurentis was making a (then stylish) "homage" to the original. It's now "dated" and "kitchy", but LOTS of fun (and the sountrack by the band "Queen" is STILL a marvel). Well worth a watch.

This is a very good DVD/Blu-Ray player, but you get what you pay for. This ISN'T "top of the line", and it shows. The remote requires a little learning (for instance, there are no buttons for "repeat" and "subtitles" - you have to access them through the "info/menu" button); and (serious drawback) there is ONLY an HDMI output (NO composite video OR digital coaxial audio output). But, given these drawbacks, the operation works smoothly and gives an eminently viewable result. Well worth the money.

Interstellar warfare; intelligent "bugs"; people being torn limb from limb; Only soldiers can get to be "citizens"; Michael Ironside (Scanners, Total Recall) chewing up the scenery; and even a little social philosophy thrown in. What more could you want from a Saturday afternoon at the movies? Kitchy and worth a watch.

Most people agree this wasn't Wayne's "best" performance (and that the Oscar win was a much overdue acknowledgement for his body of work). THAT SAID, this is STILL a great movie that has held up well. Everyone knows gunslingers and everyone knows the classic image of a cowboy on a cattle drive. But here we've got an ageing, hard drinking, disenchanted lawman who STILL knows when something is plain "wrong". Wayne broke new ground with this role, and Marshall Rooster Cogburn became an icon. Kim Darby's characterization of Mattie Ross ALSO broke new ground, giving us a strong young woman who keeps focused on avenging her father's death. If you've been on another planet and haven't seen this movie, give it a look. It won't disappoint....pilgrim.

Stories about humankind learning they can't control everything never get old. Here we have a 1970's sci-fi classic about a manmade satellite bringing a deadly alien organism back to earth. People are dropping like flies, and a group of elite scientists in a at a top-secret facility work feverishly to neutralize the threat. This is an early effort by writer Michael Crichton (Coma, Westworld, Jurassic Park), and it's still well worth a look.
Tim Burton took a chance - he tried to make a movie with a modern theme, but using the animation techniques of George Pal and Ray Harryhausen ... and it works! This movie gives "old time" special effects fans a chance to reminisce ... and gives newcomers a chance to see an art form that they missed out on. All in all, wonderfully realized and fascinating to revel in.
They've remade lots of classic fairy tales lately, but this movie goes one step further - it's told from the point of view of the "villian" - who doesn't seem to be so much of a villian after all. YES, it changes the story we all know, but it's FASCINATING to see it from a different point of view. Visually stunning and DEFINETLY worth a look.
