I've done film photography both in the military and as a civilian. I needed a DSLR that would allow me the flexibility that I was accustomed too with my film SLR and not break the bank. The NIKON D3200 fit the bill quite nicely. The DSLR format gives me the flexibility of interchangeable lenses, a choice of auto or manual focus and a wide ISO range to work with. I did find myself somewhat limited with the obvious lack of support for bracketing but it wasn't a deal breaker. I have yet to shoot video with the camera but it supports full HD video and both NTSC and PAL output formats. You can use a variety of accessories with the D3200 like GPS, external microphones, remote shutter controls etc.
Overall, the camera is an excellent first step into the world of DSLR at a reasonable price point and from there sky is the limit in terms of Nikon's product line. Give it a try, I think you'll like it.

What's not so great: Somewhat restrictive - for example not support for exposure bracketing.
