Is this a decent laptop for an elderly, cranky at times person to operate for email, downloading pics, facebook? Or is there a better choice?
For the price this more than enough for an elderly person. It can do all that and more. My 8 yr old operates it with no problem.

So with the Dvd and cd holder could you play games like the Sims on this laptop or any other games?
Yes, I do not see why not. I do not have that game but I believe it has enough RAM to handle the game.
