Verified Purchase:Yes
I haven't had a new TV in years. I've been hanging in there with my 32" Sony Bravia TV that I got as a gift a long time ago. I decided it was time for a larger, 50"+ 4K HDR TV. I'm a techie and currently play computer games and wanted to get back in to console gaming. I am a critic when it comes to visual performance and technology.
I bought a 55" 4K HDR Samsung TV this past Black Friday and quickly saw how unnatural it looked. The colors were over saturated, there was bad motion blur, and I did some research and found out it was an 8-bit HDR TV. I returned it, did more research, and ran into a guy that works at Best Buy and began talking to him. Initially I'm apprehensive about talking to Best Buy tech employees because I always know more than them. I build my own computers, install my own car audio and head units, etc. However, this guy was a God send. Some of the things that led me to this Sony X850D was it has a native 120hz panel, true 10-bit HDR (8-bit HDR is outdated, the standard is 10-bit, the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S output 10-bit), amazing colors, and a trustworthy and quality brand. The Best Buy worker actually said this was the TV he uses to game on but he's sad that he purchased it when it first came out for over a $1,000.
Once I got the TV home and set it up the different was night and day. I was quickly reminded exactly why I've chosen to stick with Sony over the years. The colors all look natural and thanks to the image processor and panel, they pop but not in an unnatural over the top, Samsung, way. Playing games and watching action movies showed the 120hz panel was able to keep up with constantly and quick changes without any delay. This TV's quality and color is absolutely beautiful. I loaded a 4K HDR video from YouTube and was amazed at how much of a difference in colors there is between the 10-bit panel and 8-bit panel. This is also a smart TV but the first TV I've encountered that was Android. This means you can access the Google Play store and download Android apps to your television. The upscaling this TV does is absolutely amazing. Comcast only offers 1080p and the level of detail this upscaler adds truly makes 1080p look like 4K quality.
All in all, you get what you pay for. The price is completely justifiable given the pure quality of this television and what you're getting. This is as good as it gets for LED 4K HDR televisions under $1,000. The only thing better requires a $1,000 price jump to purchase the X930D LED 4K HDR TV that has local dimming (expensive tech). The only thing local dimming does is it's able to turn off single LEDs to make the black color as black as if you had the TV off. With that being said, the blacks on this X850D are outstanding. If you make that jump to the X930D, the only place to go next is OLED TVs that are in the $2,000 range. I'm not sure about you but I'm on a budget and this is hands down the best bang for your buck television you'll find for under $1,000.
Side Note: It's VERY important that you use the proper HDMI cable when assessing and viewing 4K HDR content. Not all HDMI cables are created equal. The one that comes with your cable box is absolute trash. HDMI cables have bandwidth restrictions and 4K increases the bandwidth requirement then adding HDR increases it again. For true 4K HDR viewing you'll need an 18 GBPS HDMI cable. Best Buy sells them for $19.99. Once I learned about this, I was skeptical, but I bought one and replaced the HDMI cable that my Comcast box came with and it was an immediate night and day difference.

Will someone check the tv for the app "vidangel"? i would like to know if its on there before I buy the amazon fire stick while it is on sale.

Hey CWee,

This is an Android TV and VidAngel is available in the Google Play store which this TV has access to. It'll be able to download and install this app for you.

How do I connect my BOSE 3-2-1 to my new 2016 Sony? It is an older BOSE. Thank-you

Hey Buckeye,

You'll have to find an adapter for the connector for those speakers. Not sure if Best Buy sells them but you can do a google search for it. They've been out long enough for there to be adapters available.

Any recommendations for an HDMI cable for the TV itself?

Hey Charlie,

I'm glad you know of the differences in HDMI cables. Using an 18 GBPS HDMI cable is perfectly fine for 4K HDR viewing. If you go less than that, you may experience a degrade in quality in the form of not being able to see all HDR colors in their full intensity or downscaling from 4K quality, depending of the bandwidth of the HDMI cable you're using. Best Buy sells an 18 GBPS HDMI cable for $19.99.

Does this tv have glare. issuses?

Hey grif,

I use this TV with lights on in my room and I haven't noticed any glare. The only way you can see for yourself is if you go in to the store and use your phone's flashlight then compare that to other TVs around it.

Can I stil use my Channel Master DVR. Source > Channel Master > TV. Will that degrade my source from 4K?

Hey Richard,

Any time you add a "middle device" between the source and destination you risk degrading the quality. If the Channel Master has direct bypass and is able to send the signal exactly as it received it than you should be fine. If it's only capable of outputting 1080p or 4K without HDR then you're going to have a loss in quality.

Does this TV have Picture in a Picture or can you do split screen viewing? How do you set it up?

Hey Denise,

No, this TV does not support PiP viewing. None of the Sony HDR D supports split screen viewing.

Do i have to buy a sony soundbar or is it just best to use a sony soundbar when trying to use the remote that came with tv to operate it? Thnx in advance

Hey Bg,

The remote can connect to control various things such as your cable box, audio receiver, etc. You don't have to buy a Sony soundbar, you can use whatever sound bar you like then program the included Sony TV remove to control the volume of it.

Hello I have an iphone 6 and not android how will this work with my phone?

Hey Rob,

The same functionality you'll have with any other Smart TV and your iPhone, you'll have with this TV. This TV having Android doesn't take away anything yet it adds features such as Google Play, the ability to download android apps, etc. AirPlay will still function flawlessly with this TV.

Will this TV work with Ac input of 230 volts please or is it strictly 110 volts America

Hey Jyde,

You'll definitely need a power converter since the TV is only equipped to handle 110v. Aside from this, you may need to make sure you'll be using HDMI input or some kind of digital converter to view things. The the television signal standard in the US and outside of it is different and the TV itself may not be able to decode signals from just an antenna, as an example.

just trying to look at my options how reliable is it have heard they start to have problems if used to much ?

Hey Conan,

Sony makes quality products. I've had several TVs by them and have never once had an issue with any of them. In the worst case scenario, they have a manufacturers warranty.
