After the out of this world masterpiece that was Moonraker Cubby Broccoli rightfully chose to open the new decade bringing Bond back down to Earth with this faithful return to Fleming's source material. Using elements from two short stories from For Your Eyes Only as well as elements from other novels a gripping plot concerning a stolen guidance system and a possible turncoat lead Bond to Greece with the aid of the beautiful daughter of a murdered scientist and charming smuggler. The transfer while shows the films' rather drab and earth-toned cinematography limitations is still perfect and of course the extras are extensive as usual especially the great commentary by Moore who provided commentary for all the films he made under his tenure. Highly recommended for fans of the film or for those seeking a more down-to-Earth earlier Bond film.

"Bourbon, No Ice"

A new Bond, a new drink, a new era. Roger Moore steps into Bond's alligator-hopping shoes in perhaps the most seventies Bond film you could imagine in this loose adaptation of Fleming's exciting but dated novel. Using the blaxploitation boom as it's basis Bond travels from New York to New Orleans to the fictional island of San Monique investigating a drug baron and dictator played wonderfully by Yaphet Kotto. Again another solid transfer done by Lowry although the sound mix isn't quite as bombastic as previous ones due to source issues which is a shame given the score by George Martin and theme by Paul McCartney. Overall though this is again due to the source and not due to mastering issues with the Blu-ray itself as this is as good as release as you can get with a great transfer overall and extensive extras. Groovy and recommended.

Bond returns to action in this epic 4th adventure that takes things to the Bahamas in search of a destructive bomb and the sinister organization SPECTRE holding the world hostage. Initially released in 2008 and undergone many cover art changes this Lowry early 4K restoration refreshes the film to it's full glory with only slight flicker here and there from age. The extras like all the other Bond Blu-rays are extensive. If you are anticipating the release of the upcoming SPECTRE (as of writing this) and want to know the full power of what terror that organization can inflict on the world this is perhaps one of the most grand Bond films that shows them in action plus Connery is great as usual.

"You've Had Your Six"

MGM has recently re-released their Bond Blu-rays again in anticipation of the new film SPECTRE. I own the 2012 releases which despite different cover art are the same exact discs that had just been released so my review here should still be relevant. Initially released in 2008 the current master for Dr. No still holds up as a fresh way to watch the film being one of the earlier mastered in 4K releases. This was the first Bond film so don't mind the rough around the edges feel of it but being the earliest this is one of the films that presents Bond's world being the closest to Fleming's source material with all the charm and ruthlessness present in Connery's performance. While there are some significant changes from page to screen overall this adaptation is still very faithful and in some cases improves on a few things such as adding Professor Dent and seeing Doctor No's plan in action. Overall if you're buying these films individually and are wondering where to start the first one is usually a hit or miss choice to start but here I can say as long as you don't mind an aged film this is a sterling choice.

A Double Dose of British Gangland

Sony has wisely released a two-disc set featuring two modern gangster classics from the U.K. at a nice price. Layer Cake is a great film featuring Daniel Craig in the role that earned him the nod for James Bond trying to make one last big drug deal before he retires for good all the while foiling a mysterious assassin who sets his sights on Craig's nameless protagonist as the drugs he happens to be off-loading were stolen from a European businessman. Snatch is Guy Ritchie's more comic masterwork featuring a mix of American and English actors playing desperate characters trying one way or another to get in and out of trouble. Both films feature crisp transfers which are pretty much a standard for Sony and thankfully as mentioned above these films are housed on their own discs rather than compressed together. At the current price this set is to use a rather droll pun, a steal.

Criterion has done Lynch proud again with this stunning new Blu-ray release of his 21st century masterpiece that pops and shimmers in 4K glory capturing the allure of sun-drenched, facade enclosed Hollywood in true Sunset Boulevard fashion with Naomi Watts as with the rest of the cast giving a darling performance as an aspiring actress who finds herself caught up in mystery and romance with an alluring amnesiac and her bag full of money all the while a young hot shot movie director finds his marriage on the rocks while the movie he's currently directing is being taken over by ruthless producers who aren't afraid of using brute force to get their way. Extras while in listing deceptively seem light but the four interview segments found are fairly long and extensive much like previous efforts documenting Lynch's work coupled with a rather odd deleted scene and the theatrical trailer. Overall this is a release that was totally worth the long wait and will hopefully serve alongside last year's Eraserhead release as the jumping point for more future Lynch releases from Criterion. Fabulous and recommended.

Kino Lorber brings Altman's controversial adaptation of perhaps Chandler's darkest work to Blu-ray with more of a bang than a whimper thankfully. Elliot Gould brings his easy-going attitude to one of the more cynical private eyes this time in seventies-era L.A. trying to adapt to changing times of fading loyalties and casual indifference in a film that also features a stellar cast plus an ending which in my honest opinion is more powerful and poignant than the books' ending. The transfer to this film is as good as it's going to get on a budget enhancing the film's hazy and grim atmosphere. Altman's cinematography choices don't allow for much clarity so keep that in mind. The audio I'm afraid suffers from a slight hiss like plenty of releases of films from the era but the extras are decent enough. Overall the flaws technical-wise can be attributed to the film itself so keep that in mind when viewing this otherwise fabulous adaptation. Highly recommended.

David Bowie in glorious HD

Warner Archive has gotten around to giving one of my favorite vampire films a fresh 2K transfer that shimmers with style and captures the gothic '80's allure of the late Tony Scott's masterful filmmaking. David Bowie while not onscreen as much as the boxart would want you to believe brings all his handsome looks and devilish charm to the screen as the doomed lover of Catherine Deneuves' black widow of a vampire Miriam who's set her sights on a replacement lover, Susan's Surandon's Dr. Sarah Roberts. Not much in the way of special features sadly as I would have loved to hear from Bowie about how he got involved in this film and his current thoughts on it. Still, a great Blu-ray for a film I recommend for the less prudish and seeking a more art-house styled vampire film.

Mickey Spillane himself throws his fedora into the ring and plays his own creation Mike Hammer in perhaps the most faithful Hammer adaptation filmed. Hammer is essentially a private eye version of his own creator, a big framed WW2 veteran who's sense of justice has been crossed sending him barreling through New York City with his trusty .45 and plenty of attitude so no troubles performance-wise in a film that also has a noteworthy performance from Shirley Eaton who's famous for playing the ill-fated Jill Masterson in Goldfinger. With a limited run of only 2000 copies printed and sporting a crisp transfer with some minor scratches and debris here and there plus some great special features this is highly recommended for fans of Spillane's works.

Tobe Hooper's masterpiece

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has become one of the most influential horror films of all time thanks to it's gritty realistic documentary approach and at the time novel choice of locale. The new Dark Sky restoration sports a 4K restoration which I'm surprised to say really does surpass the already phenomenal previous release with a much more natural looking picture quality and grain levels. Sound is also quite a boost here given there's several different sound mixes including the original audio mix, a 2.0, a 5.1, and the new 7.1 mix supervised by Tobe Hooper. There are several versions of this great release, a single disc release for those who want the bare basics which is the film and four commentaries plus there's a big special edition with the special features from the previous releases. Either way this release surpassed my expectations and reaffirmed my faith in the new 4K restorations being done.
