This lens has been one I've rented twice before and now am a happy owner of! It's easily a favorite of mine, spanning an incredible range of zoom and maintaining an awesome, wide open aperture of f/2.8 all throughout! Not only that, this lens does f/2.8 like it's no one's business! Just look at pictures people have taken with this lens or rent one for yourself! Use one at Best Buy! This lens makes being in the Canon ecosystem worth it.

Soft, bad focusing

From my experience, I can tell you that if you want a picture with vibrant colors and well-defined edges, you absolutely must pay more. This produced very soft images and missed focus a lot. Big disappointment.

I can't fault these lens filters! HOYA really hits the nail on the head with the anti-static and dust feature. While I've had lens filters from other brands literally attract dust the moment I take them out of their packaging, this filter rarely needs cleaning. Very happy with it! Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Standard Lens: This Canon 50mm lens has an unusually large maximum aperture so you can get detailed pictures even in low light and without needing a flash. It is a perfect tool for basic portraits and scenic shots, especially at night.

Good lens... For a niche crowd

I went into this purchase understanding the incredibly thin depth of field and knowing how hard that can be to work with. I've worked with f1.4 before, which is close enough.
However, the real issue with this lens lies in how prone it is to back or front focus issues, which of course, my copy had, in some cases, severely. If I was ever close to an object, it was very likely to focus behind what I was trying to focus on, well beyond the minimum focusing distance, too.
Its construction is admirable and like any Canon L lens, I cannot fault it. It feels incredibly solid, though I do wish it was fully weather-sealed straight out of the box, no filter needed... At this pricepoint it amazes me that Canon can't manage that for their customers.
The other main con is the price and this ultimately is what makes me unable to recommend this lens. Reviewers have shown that in some cases the far cheaper Canon 50mm f1.4 is, oddly so, sharper and has less chromatic aberration! This should not be the case, as the 1.4 is even older than the L 1.2! See Christopher Frost's comparison on YouTube for what I am talking about.
Tony and Chelsea Northrup also compare this to the Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art (new lens) and it basically loses. Is, what, a third of an f stop truly worth $900 more in the case of the Canon 1.4 comparison, or $400 more in the case of the Sigma 1.4 Art comparison? You be the judge. I've made my decision and no longer own it for these reasons.

I would recommend this to a friend, but advise them to try to save money however they can. This lens is alright, but I think Canon should update it. It has a pretty bad case of chromatic aberration, so if you're taking a macro picture (or using it as a prime lens for portraiture, etc) and there's bright light, don't be surprised if you get weird colors showing up. Taking a picture of your flowers on a sunny day? GUARANTEED.
That being said, this is a pretty nice lens otherwise! Just kind of outdated glass, I think.
