Perfect for Oddly-Shaped or Sized Houses
on January 26, 2018

Verified Purchase:Yes
The Google WiFi 3-pack is the perfect solution to a house that is problematic for size or shape, providing outstanding WiFi connectivity throughout the house with incredibly easy setup.
Living in a house that has had 3 additions made to it, I struggled for months to try & get a good solution to no avail. Stronger & stronger routers until I finally glowed anytime I walked past the router closet, WiFi extenders, none worked and finally reached the point of being fed up & invested in this system.
While incredibly pricey versus a simple 1-piece router, it was more than worth it. I strategically placed the 3 pucks in the right places in the house and have excellent coverage inside & to a certain distance outside of the house.
One puck needs to be connected to your modem with the included cable, but the other 2 pucks mesh wirelessly, you just need power.
Set up is extremely easy, but an app is required (no web-based interface for setting up or programming), but this is the direction most systems are going anyway.
After setup, the app gives you the ability to manually control settings for DNS, IP address for the router itself (previous versions did not have this ability from my research), port forwarding, DHCP reservations, NAT mode, and more.
The app will give you the ability to do an internet speed test as well as a mesh coverage test giving you a visual on the strength of the wireless in each location.
You can also enable a guest WiFi, but that turns off certain other features, so I left mine off.
The WiFi password can be easily shared from the app via text or e-mail, which is helpful if you have a complex password passphrase and don't want to sit there trying to coach people typing it in manually.
Family WiFI is also available on the app, giving you the ability to pause the whole WiFi or specific devices at scheduled times (dinner, homework, bedtime, etc.).
Overall, this is the best WiFi I've had in 2 years in the house, and couldn't be happier with the purchase.

Works Well, Still Learning
on December 6, 2017
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Fairfax, VA
The Honeywell Smart color thermostat first of all looks amazing on a wall. It gives a very classy look, more so than other smart thermostats, with plenty of data displayed as you walk by.
If you're not fully experienced with installation and are going it alone, MAKE SURE you take a photo of your existing thermostat's configuration in the event this does not work or you need to revert back to the original installation for any reason.
The thermostat does require a "C-Wire". DO YOUR RESEARCH on this with your system BEFORE buying this thermostat. The c-wire essentially provides recharging power to the thermostat. Older system may not have one of these. (Note, there are workarounds to this which involve running a new wire or purchasing a transformer to power the device). But again, look at the existing thermostat you have BEFORE purchasing this. When in doubt, get an HVAC expert to come in.
The system is constantly learning, and will adjust to your manual settings. For example, if you like it warmer while you're watching TV in the evening (maybe that's the coldest room in the house), the system will learn the approximate times you are in that room & move the temps accordingly. Mine is still learning after several weeks of being installed, so don't get frustrated.
The ability to set "comfort times" is nice, in that you can say you want it cooler in night when sleeping (we love to curl up in blankets in a cool room), but don't want to be freezing in the morning when you get into the shower. The system will automatically turn itself on at the right time based on the time you say you want it to be warm (for example, I say I want it to be 72 degrees at 7 a.m.). Again, the system learns how long it takes to heat the house to 72 and will turn on at the appropriate time to give you the 72 degree warmth at 7 a.m. as expected.
Adding to the WiFi using the app is easy, and with that can be controlled outside of the house. I can now see when the kids are changing the temps in the house and can set it back if I choose.
You can also set it to keep your house at a lower temp while you're out of town (or just while at work), and again have it ready your house to the right temp when you're about to walk back in the door.
From a functionality standpoint, it's great. But again, make sure your system will support the device before investing in it. If you're looking at the cost of the device plus the cost of an HVAC tech to wire it up you may want to just stick with what you have.

Excellent Quality, Easy Set Up
on December 6, 2017
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Fairfax, VA
In a house where I already have 3 standalone cameras which all require some level of direct web access to view with limited playback capability, the Arlo was a great enhancement to our existing system. Extremely easy to set up, I was up & running within 15 minutes and already pulling HD quality images, with it taking a little bit longer to set up the alerts & zones. I've used this to monitor packages being delivered to the house (thanks to the kids ignoring the door bell), easily capturing faces, etc. and the alerts come quickly to my smartphone. Out further, cars are easy to recognize but those complaining you can't see license plates need a reality check on what true video capability is (this isn't television where you can zoom in, nor are these NSA-quality cameras). The siren is loud but I opted to not use for the time being. I do find the add on cameras to be pricey (at north of $200 each), but the quality certainly warrants it. With 2 cameras included, it's enough for most people to cover 2 entry points in the house. In the end, this is an excellent system with ease of use & set up and required very little in terms of technical know-how to get working quickly.

Great Sound, Painful Fit
on November 21, 2017
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Fairfax, VA
The FIT 305s are designed to be wireless headphones for the athletic or active lifestyle, lightweight with a durable sheath over the wires leading between the 2 buds.
The sound quality is extremely good, including great low bass range and the silicone ear buds do a good job of sealing out outside noise.
Unfortunately, that's where the PROs stop and the CONs start.
I found the headphones uncomfortable to wear for more than about 15 minutes. The slide-on silicone 1-piece buds, which include a flexible loop meant to hold the buds in, rubbed and pushed hard on my ear canal, making them painful to wear, a pain that didn't go away for a few minutes after removing the headphones. This wasn't an issue with the size of the in-ear buds, rather the design of the slide-on 1-piece bud that encompasses both the in-ear bud and out-of-ear loop (see photo).
Additionally, the cord, if not properly secured, transfers the sound from any motion or rubbing up against your shirt right into the ear buds themselves. So when running, where you have a constant up & down motion allowing the cord to move & flop, it converted all of that into sound which I found annoying. The cord does include a clip to secure the loose cord to the collar of your shirt, but isn't enough to stop that motion & the transferred sound.
The controls (and mic) are located on the right side of the headphones, which makes them a little lopsided, allowing the right ear bud to pull itself out after excessive motion like running. I found myself having to push the ear bud back in (again, not due to the improper size).
Also, the cord and right ear bud are a light blue color, while the remainder of the cord leading to the left ear bud & the ear bud itself was dark blue. I couldn't figure out what the concept of the 2 difference colors were and why everything wasn't the same color (see photo).
In the end, the discomfort of wearing these far outweighed the incredible sound, which was disappointing. I really wanted to like these, but if you can't comfortably wear them you won't wear them at all, which makes this a waste for me.

Replace the keyboard of your Microsoft Surface Pro 7, 6, 5 or 4 with this silver Brydge keyboard. It conveniently lets you open the screen at your preferred viewing angle without a kickstand, and its backlit keys increase visibility in low light working environments. This Brydge keyboard is lightweight, so it doesn't add extra bulk to your device.

Heavy Duty but Heavy
on November 21, 2017
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Fairfax, VA
The Brydge keyboard is an all-aluminum, heavy-duty Bluetooth keyboard designed for use with the Surface Pro 3 and Surface Pro 4. The keyboard buttons look more like a keyboard on a Mac laptop, and are infinitely better than the manufacturer's keyboard with flat, dead-feeling keys. Buttons are easier to depress and much more responsive. Ultimately, it gives your Surface more of a laptop feel than a tablet feel.
Also included, similar to other keyboards, is the touchpad which is sensitive & requires little touch for input. The keyboard also allows the touchpad to be turned off, which is a nice feature if you're often bumping it with your hand and moving the mouse. One downside is that when pushing the touchpad in on the left side (left click), it is so sensitive that it often will move the mouse in 1 direction as you depress and then back the other way as you release the button.
The keyboard, with its hinge, allows the Surface to sit at a variety of different angles without sliding, which I found very nice.
The keyboard recharges with the included Micro USB cable and the battery life is listed as "months" (I've been almost 2 weeks on it with no recharging necessary). The Surface slides into 2 uprights that hold the device with rubber inserts that grip the Surface. It comes with the grips for a SP4, but with a pair of replaceable grips if you have an SP3. One note is that if you have a screen saver Brydge suggests you remove it prior to inserting into the grips. I had trouble inserting my Surface easily with a Zagg Glass screen protector on it. But I'm not willing to sacrifice screen protection, so I managed to wiggle it in there. With this fit, it's not easy to remove the tablet & use it alone as it is with the snap-on Microsoft keyboard.
CONS:
Being aluminum and having an internal battery also adds thickness and weight to the keyboard, and I found it made my Surface more than double the weight, which is quite noticeable. But, that thickness & the metal comes with the added comfort of being a great protection to the screen when the laptop is closed.
The keyboard also does not have any place to hold the stylus. I had this in a case before that had a loop for the stylus but now find myself leaving the stylus in the office or at home accidentally since it's no longer stowed with my Surface. I would have liked to have seen something designed in to the keyboard for holding the stylus, even if it was just a clip to hold it on.
In the end, this is an awesome keyboard, and I wonder where this has been all these years of struggling with the manufacturer's keyboard. If you're looking to actually use the Surface to replace your laptop, and not just be a tablet, this keyboard is the right pick.

Enjoy up to 10 hours of wireless audio with these Sony noise-canceling headphones. They produce rich sound by playing at audio frequencies of 3-40,000Hz and have a closed-back design that blocks outside noise for a better listening experience. These Sony noise-canceling headphones sit comfortably behind the neck and work with or without the 1m wire.

Great Sound, but Maybe a Little Too Much Bass
on October 25, 2017
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Fairfax, VA
The Sony 1000X are true, active noise-cancelling headphones, not just “noise reduction” headphones. They feature in-ear buds connected with a wire to a neck band control. Controls are located on the inside of the left side of the band and, as is always the case with headphone buttons you can’t see, the controls are hard to determine just with touch and take time to get used to which buttons are where & what they control. Controls include power, volume up, volume down, and a multi-function pause/play/next/previous button, depending on the number of times in a row you push it. The single button on the right of the band controls the 3 levels of noise cancellation (noise cancelling, ambient, off). The neck band is padded to increase comfort over longer-term wear or use when exercising when the band will likely move around on the neck.
Sounds quality is very good, but occasionally a little high on the bass. Like other wireless headphones, it requires the use of the Sony Headphones App to control the equalizer but comes with a tradeoff - you must change the quality mode from the default of “Priority on Sound Quality” to “Priority on Stable Connection”, which is usually used for poor or skipping connections. This tradeoff of control over the equalizer comes at the cost of a slight drop in sound quality as it prioritizes connection over quality.
They seem to have a problem cancelling sound when there is a loud, abrupt noise nearby. I closed a door on my desk and it cancelled it with a loud, uncomfortable pop noise. This was repeated with the same results, so not just an anomaly. I tried the same move with another (unnamed brand) of noise-cancelling headphones and they did NOT do the same thing, so something specific to the Sony brand. Not a huge deal but is a bug nonetheless.
The headphones also include “Adaptive Sound Control” which detects what activity you’re doing at the time (Staying, Walking, Running, or Transit) and adjusts the amount of noise cancellation & ambient sounds allowed accordingly. For example, “Running” will result in a maximum setting for ambient noise allowed in since you want to be able to hear more of your surroundings, while “Transit” turns the noise cancellation all the way up (thus turning ambient noise to a zero) so you don’t have to hear the other annoying passengers. Just don’t miss your subway stop by not hearing the overhead announcements. You can adjust the auto settings with the Headphones App.
The headphones come with one set of silicone ear buds pre-installed, plus 3 other sizes of silicone as well as 3 sizes of “Triple Comfort Earbuds” which are a little more comfortable when worn for a longer time, but found the fit wasn’t as good & the ambient sound was higher than the silicone, but they also the reduced the “bass” problem with the headphones. I found the silicone earbuds have a bad tendency to flip themselves inside out when removing them from your ears.
Additionally, it includes several cables, including a micro USB for changing (no charging block), a wired micro USB-to-single jack airplane cord, as well as a 2-prong airplane adapter for in-flight entertainment.
The case included leaves a lot to be desired. A soft zippered case does nothing to protect the headphones when thrown into a bag. Also, there is no way to completely stow the headphone buds. The neck band allows you to secure the earbud wires, but the buds themselves remain free to dangle & possibly get damaged. I would have liked to have seen at least a semi-rigid case for the headphones at this price.
Overall, these are excellent in-ear noise-cancelling headphones. And while I do still prefer the over-the-ear noise-cancelling headphones for true shut down of outside sound, these don’t leave you with “headphone hair” and work better if you wear glasses or sunglasses (the arms leave a gap in the over-the-ear headphones, which allows more unwanted sound in). A great choice for noise-cancelling headphones.

Excellent Razor with a Couple of Caveats
on October 20, 2017
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Fairfax, VA
The Philips 5750 is a 3-head rechargeable razor that gives an excellent shave. The pivoting head takes a little getting used to if you are used to a fixed head electric shaver, but makes it easy to follow the contours of your face.
The razor allows for wet or dry shave. Use just water or any shaving cream, which I found made the shave even closer than just dry.
The device comes with a docking base that charges, cleans, and lubricates the razor, and the cord that powers the dock can be removed & plugged directly into the razor to charge if you're travelling. The box also includes a zippered travel case for the razor.
With the cleaning & lubricant fluid put into the base, you can trigger an automatic cleaning of the device after use, although they recommend you rinse the device under water prior to running it thru the cleaning mode. This also freshens the device up from that "old shaver" smell.
CONS:
I found 2 cons to the device during use.
First, when you store the unit in the docking station it simply will not fully dry. So when you rinse it in the sink & then store it, 24 hours later the heads are still wet. Same with running the cleaning cycle -- the device is wet some 24 hours later. And it's worse following the cleaning cycle if you try to dry shave. The cleaning fluid left behind dries quickly on your face making your face "rubbery" and thus the razor will no longer glide at all. I found myself having toe re-wet my face with water just to be able to use the razor. The only way I have found to not deal with the residual moisture is to leave it out of the dock on the counter with the heads flipped up (cleaning position) to fully dry. But this seems to negate the concept of having a dedicated place to store the device.
The other con is the button to open the shaving heads to allow for it to be rinsed if somewhat large & prominent right on the front of the shaver. So if you hold the razor with your hand closer to the shave heads you have a tendency to bump that button, and that opens the razor in the middle of your shave.
Other than those 2 caveats, it's an excellent razor that provides a nice, close, comfortable shave.

Excellent Monitor
on October 17, 2017
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Fairfax, VA
The Acer S271HL is an excellent, all-purpose widescreen monitor with great color profile an extremely narrow bezel.
The monitor runs at a 1920x1080 resolution, and the display extends all the way to the top, left, and right sides with a bezel that is perhaps 1/2" around. The bottom bezel is slightly larger which makes the monitor look a little lopsided to me.
The monitor has inputs for HDMI, DVI, and VGA (1 each). The only issue is if you're using a generic mounting arm it likely will cover the DVI and VGA inputs. I use this as an external monitor for a tablet and is mounted on a swing arm on my desk -- that plate ends up covering those inputs (see photo of the plate covering the inputs to the right of the HDMI input), which is fine since I'm using HDMI, but be aware prior to buying a wall mount arm.
Color depth is excellent, and the documentation lists a 100,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Photos look amazing when viewed on the monitor.
Overall, excellent monitor at a good price.

Frustrating Starting with Setup
on October 11, 2017
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Fairfax, VA
The D-Link AC2600 is billed as an "Ultimate Streaming and Gaming" router, boasting the latest MU-MIMO wireless technology. But just getting set up can prove to be frustrating.
The initial setup went fine via the (forced on you) Wizard with no option to manually configure, putting in all of the settings just the way I wanted them, after which it prompted for a firmware upgrade from v1.00 to v1.01. Agreeing to the upgrade, it took just a couple of minutes and a reboot.
Following the reboot, the Wizard again launches and spends an indefinite amount of time trying to "Locate Internet Connection", which never completes. Same Wizard and same response whether trying to configure via the wireless or wired connection.
Ultimately had to hard reset the device to get it to recognize the internet again, but still had to go thru all of the same setup steps that I had already gone thru. Ultimately, a router shouldn't lose it's programming when upgrading like that. Moreover, if this is the "norm", it may deter users from applying firmware upgrades to avoid a reconfig, leaving the device vulnerable to known security issues.
Once set up, it does throw a good signal and speeds are comparable to other MU-MIMO routers, nothing special.
The router does not have any automatic prioritization for game systems that support Killer, but you can manually prioritize devices to getting a higher ranking in the QoS settings. You are limited to 1 device listed as "Highest" priority, 2 as "High", and 8 as "Medium". Everything else is just standard (good for IoT devices).
The settings for firewall, port forwarding, website filters, and static routes are limited to 24 entries to each. For most people this should be more than enough, if even used. The key is the website filtering, which can only block up to 24 individually-named/entered sites, and cannot block categories of sites, so no real true "parental control" on this thing to allow entire swaths of sites to be easily blocked.
And for those with larger homes, there is no "Bridge Mode" on the device to expand your network, which many other routers include.
Ultimately, the device is a middle-of-the-road gaming router, but found myself completely turned away from it based on my initial setup frustrations. The first interaction with a device like this is the setup. If it's that bad right out of the box, it doesn't bode well for how well one will like it moving forward.

Good, Basic-Use Laptop
on October 10, 2017
Posted by: GoalieMedic
from Fairfax, VA
If you're buying a Chromebook, you already know what you are getting -- a limited-use laptop without most of the application compatibility of Windows or Mac-based laptops. But that's not a bad thing, seeing the majority of work is done on a handful of apps and via browsers nowadays.
Very thin & lightweight, this laptop boasts a large 15-inch touchscreen which was great (but not excellent) with good color but needs a little more brightness. Lack of brightness combined with the high-reflective screen makes for difficult use in direct sunlight or bright offices. Also, the screen becomes more flexible the higher up from the hinge you go, so using the touchscreen produces a lot of movement in the screen itself.
It comes preloaded with Google apps like Docs, Sheets, and GMail, and additional apps can be downloaded from the Google Play Store. If you're an Andoid user, you'll be pretty familiar with what apps are available, as this essentially mimics a phone in terms of app availability. One redeeming factor is that Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are available from the Play Store, and with a valid Office 365 subscription you can avoid the forced use of Docs or other Google office apps.
Keep in mind that the internal storage is limited to 32 GB of internal storage, so don't go overboard with loading every app under the sun. Also, use of Google Drive, Dropbox, or other cloud storage will be
If you've never used a Chromebook before, there is a slight learning curve with key commands. For example, there is no right-click (it's an ALT-click similar to a Mac), no Caps Lock, and no F-keys. See the HELP > Keyboard Shortcuts to figure out all the odd configurations available.
Battery life is spectacular, with the Chromebook happily living for 24 hours in my backpack with the lid closed, using only about 20% in standby. Charging is via a power supply with a USB-C connector (finally!), although don't expect to use your USB-C car charger to power the device (needs 3 amps).
Sound quality is one of the better features of the device, with excellent quality from 2 upward-facing speakers flanking the keyboard (needed just a tad bit more bass).
One awesome feature for Android phone users is Bluetooth proximity unlock, where you can unlock your Chromebook without a password if it is paired via Bluetooth with your Android phone. Just bring your phone within range of the laptop & the device is ready to be unlocked by just selecting your photo on the lock screen. Otherwise, unlock is via your Google account password of 6+ digit PIN number.
Overall, the Chromebook is what it is designed to be -- a dedicated-use device great for kids or limited purpose productivity.

No. The Bose QC series does a much better job than the Sony headphones, but obviously at a higher price. If you're sticking with Sony, look at the 1000X (over-the-ear or the earbud style) series for the best noise cancelling quality and options.

Will this work on a LG G3 phone that operates on Android System

I want to give this as a gift to my fiance. Who has a LG G3. His phone does operate on the Android sytem but it is not a samsung. I just wanted to make sure it is possible to sync and if so, are there any draw backs?
The device will only work with Samsung phones. It will not work with any other manufacturer, despite being on the Android OS.

Cell phone carrier

Does this have to be hooked up through a carrier? My cell phone is through Verizon so do I need to add it to a data plan?
The device is a Bluetooth-enabled watch, and therefore is tied to the phone you have. You do not have to enable a new line of service for this device (although Samsung does make a 3G-enabled device that is its own standalone phone device that can be used without a tied-in phone). You can make & answer calls from the watch so long as you are within Bluetooth range of the physical phone device.

What do the LEDs mean?

The box brags about the Halo LED indicators, but says nothing about what they indicate. The info in the box is a joke and refers you to the "full manual" on the Samsung site, which apparently doesn't exist. So... what do the various LED combinations mean??
The green lights around the device show that it is charging. They turn to green when the device is fully charged.
