While this personally was a favorite game of 2016, it's slightly hard to recommend it to everyone due to not knowing how someone would deal with the issues the game as. The game has a notorious history to its chaotic development and that comes through with missing elements to the story. The overall plot is great, but there's so much lacking inbetween, that a lot of character progression isn't handled well outside of the main cast.
Despite these issues and some bugs and padding to the games length, I really enjoyed the setting, there's a lot of epic momoments and a lot of the action is always exciting, the main squad is great and easy to like, and overall the story of the game was real very interesting and exciting. It's unfortunate the game isn't as legendary as it should've been, but it's still a good game.

While a somewhat interesting game visually at times, that can only support the experience for so long till one realizes that there's almost no real substance to keep the game engaging past a few hours. It's far too shallow to be engaging, even as just a walking simulator, and this doesn't take into account other issues that have come up since release over the developers promising far more features that never came to be in the final product.

Despite there being an actual sequel to Dead Island coming out later this year, Dying Light already steps in to give us a better experience. It has much of the same ideas as before, but it's all generally been streamlined and fine tuned to make for a much better experience. Not too mention it has quality multiplayer in it beyond just co-op as the zombie hunting mode is incredibly fun. It even has a reasonable story and set of characters this time.
The parkour element is what makes the game truly fun as now I can't play another FPS without trying to hop fences, cars, and to clamber onto rooftops. It still has a few flaws in certain areas, but not much that really hindered my experience. Took me about 35 hours to complete, which is the campaign and most all of the side-missions, but I still had tons of little collectibles and some challenges to finish up, so probably easily 40 hours if you are a completionist.

While I can't compare it much to the previous games, in the 75 hours of playtime I put in, I was really into the game, particularly because of the characters and stories. Wanting to know the background of your companions and complete their stories was a big part of that. The game on PC was rather buggy, with framerate differences between cutscenes and gameplay, a few crashes, and some annoying bugs, which keeps it from being a great game, though they were patching it to clean it up. Not much impeded my progress thankfully.
