Toshiba has been my go-to brand for a few years now. This notebook, once again, doesn't disappoint. There is a lot to talk about here so I'll try to limit to the more relevant bits.
Pros: -Beautiful screen. This is the first time I've used an HD display on a laptop and I'll never go back. The colors tend to be very vivid and bright. -Backlit keyboard. Another first for me and it's amazing how quickly you begin to rely on it. -Battery. Again, I could just be showing my age because I know all notebooks have shown improvements. But my last notebook only lasted about 2 hours doing simple tasks. This one gets about that much playing games and even more doing web browsing or word processing. -Touchscreen. I got the touchscreen version of this notebook because it was on sale. It wasn't so much of a selling point for me, but it turned out to be super useful. Many times, even with a mouse, it's much easier to just tap the icons/items on the screen.
Cons: -Screen brightness/glare. Two problems here. I hope to eliminate the glare by getting an anti-glare screen protector. I just wish it wasn't necessary (and I hope it doesn't wash out the pretty crisp HD-ness...). Couple the glare with the fact that the screen just doesn't get very bright and it can be difficult (sometimes impossible) to do certain activities in bright room. -Screen dimming. This may just be me, but I swear the screen dims and brightens based on what is being displayed. I read this might be an adaptive contrast feature but I can't figure out how to turn it off. It makes it really annoying if, for example, you're playing a game and you go into a cave. Suddenly, the screen dims just a bit. Now I'm fighting a dimming screen on an already dim screen with glare. -Wild Tangent Games. This abomination came with the laptop. Normally I don't mention software since you can just uninstall it if you don't want it. However, WT Games was so deep into the computer, I actually had to edit the registry to get rid of the shortcuts on the Start menu. Simply uninstalling didn't work.
A few extra notes: If you are afraid of Windows 8.1, then stay away, obviously. I really liked Win8.1 (I manually installed it on my last laptop) and it's even nicer on a touchscreen. I can play World of Warcraft and a few other games. You won't get Ultra settings out of this laptop, but it will survive quite nicely on low-medium settings (maybe a few settings higher if you like tweaking).
Experience pinpoint accuracy in your gaming action with this Logitech G602 910-003820 wireless gaming mouse, which features 5 distinct dpi settings to accommodate your needs. Eleven programmable buttons give you customized control.
I got this mouse primarily for WOW but I didn't want something that would be too large or annoying for everyday use as well. This works perfectly. The applications of this mouse go beyond just MMO games.
Pros: - Slick and comfortable design - Extra mouse keys are programmable to anything you can think of. You can make a single button press of the mouse do a simple key value (like button 1 = "tab") or complex/multi-press (like button 1 = press "shift + tab" then press "t" then release "shift" first then release "tab" and "t") - Software auto-detects what program/game you're playing and changes keymapping - Works great for MMO, FPS, and strategy games. - Works awesome for everyday programs (e.g. web browsers) too.
Cons: - I wish the software would detect the program that is in focus rather than simply tell if a program is running. It would be nice to have keybindings for Chrome and then switch to a different set when I'm using Explorer or Word without having to either close or set a persistent profile. - A few times, the software stopped recognizing that I was in a game. I'm not sure why, but it could have been because I had been alt+tabbing out of the game a lot. To remedy this, I just set a persistent profile when I want to be 100% the profile doesn't drop randomly. (Note: this is a rare occurrence) -May not be great for people with smaller hands. My hands are not huge but wife's hands are definitely smaller and she hates this mouse (Full disclosure: she doesn't like the extra buttons either. She likes a simple mouse)
